This new land, like the old one, was taking some time to become comfortable for Isabella. She had hidden away for so many years, hearing news only in pieces regarding the fall of her birthplace. Atlas had been somewhat different, though she had never attached much value to it. Now, she was within a new city, surrounded by companions both old and new. She stood upon the pier of the Llyrian Concord now, steely-silver gaze set upon the horizon. The water gleamed like sapphires, so pure and unpolluted by any outside force. It reminded her of a great lake, a vast blue expanse that had been where her keep was situated. How she missed it.

Her memories of that time were of mixed emotion, as they should’ve been. Great successes followed by a terrible defeat, forced to flee her home and abandon her children. Her only truest love, living on without her, believing her to be dead. All for a crown that though she felt she had been given out of service, she never truly wanted.

The waves splashed gently against the stone stilts of the dock, the air cool on her face. Her features were somewhat older now, the lines of a middle-aged body creeping up on her as the months and years passed her by. A blessing it had been, to be given youth once more to pursue a more fulfilling life for herself, and yet she felt so very unfulfilled. Her traitorous brother and cousins were all long dead now, at the hands and blades of other men.

Now, only bitterness filled her, for the meek woman she had become and the second chance she had, thus far, practically wasted. She had the support of her oldest and dearest friend, so why not give in to those tendencies she had concealed for so long? She had hated herself as a young maiden for being so much like her father, despising that deep down, she had his knack for cruelty that she had always been in denial of.

But why not give in to it? She was of the dragon, and dragons weren’t gentle. She had done something they had not thought her capable of, why not do more? She had nothing to prove, but the potential to have everything to gain. She would not be so foolish as to trust her own blood again, a fact she swore in that moment, as a proud and mirthful look spread across her austere features.

Let them fear her. Let them tremble.
