Many players have a basic understanding of what Haense is; your typical House Stark-esque Northerner Roleplay or even some sort of Russian hybrid, but let us blow your mind by saying we are much more than what you skim off the surface.

Haense is one of Humanity’s longest lasting continuous player bases on this server– having been formulated around the year 1491, which is over 254 years of ingame roleplay (or roughly 5 years of our real life time). It is even longer if you want to calculate the age of the other player bases Haense was originally derived from. Through the amalgamation of several other cultures, Haense would form its own unique and independent identity of which you see present today.

This Guide will go into further detail of the livelihoods, history and culture of the Haeseni People and their daily life, in order to give players the ability to further comprehend what exactly a Haeseni is and how they may partake in such endeavours.

I. INTRODUCTION

What is Haense?

The Kingdom of Haense, formally known as the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska, is a unitary state ruled under a semi-feudal constitutional monarchy, composed of two crown regions known as Hanseti and Ruska. It is ruled by a single individual known as the king, with his succession being styled in the fashion of Agnatic Primogeniture, meaning that it is typically only the first born male son that inherits the Kingdom.

The Kingdom of Haense also serves as the Holy Orenian Empire’s longest continuous standing vassal, with the Imperial and Royal Family intermarrying many times over throughout the iterations of the Empire.

Who Leads Haense?

If you’ve ever wondered who actually is in charge of Haense, look no further.

Haense is a semi-absolute Monarchy with constitutionalist tendencies, with the power mainly being with the King himself and other powers to his Duma (Duma translating roughly into Parliament).

At the moment, the King of Haense is a player known as AndrewTech, with his heir being seannie. The current King’s name is Andrik IV, with his father in RP having been Andrik III as they shared the same first names.

Aiding these two in the everyday managing of the Kingdom is the King’s Aulic Council, handpicked members of the player base that oversee certain aspects of the nation. Chief over the Aulic Council is the Lord Palatine, a position that is considered as second in command of the Kingdom and serves as the equivalent of a real life Prime Minister.

Keep in mind that Haense is dominated by a human centric playerbase, and as such most Haensemen are beholden to the curse humanity experiences due to this server’s lore. Most characters will pass away into the Seven Skies by their eighties, or earlier, making changes in the leadership quite frequent in comparison to other races. So what you see now, may not exactly be the same later on.

The following people are those who hold the ability to influence the Kingdom in any capacity;

His Imperial Majesty, the Holy Orenian Emperor – Peter Helane | Architecus

His Majesty, the King – Andrik Petyr | AndrewTech

His Highness, the Crown Prince – Otto Sigismund | seannie

His Excellency, the Lord Palatine – Markus Kortrevich | CaptainZenny

II. HOW TO ROLEPLAY A HAESENI

Haense inhabits the cold plains of Northern Arcas, where temperatures drop far below the norm. As such, it is suggested that players first acclimate their characters to the cold by acquiring skins appropriate for the weather and the likes. This would include furs and other heavy articles of clothing. While the Haeseni are accustomed to the cold weather, they are still human. If you ever struggle to find such skins, simply locate one of the players listed at the bottom of this post– they will have a plethora of appropriate skins for the region Haense inhabits.

While patriarchy dominates Haeseni society, waves of liberalism during its lengthy existence has allowed for much more lenient gender rights, with many occasions of political offices and military positions being held by female occupants. Traditionally though, the husband is seen as the income provider of the family, while the wife is the caretaker. In comparison to the other Provinces of the Empire, Haense is considered to be the most lax when it comes to gender discrimination in roleplay.

The playerbase of Haense is very cordial OOCly towards newcomers, welcoming people from all walks of life, so while players can roleplay in Haense on their foreign characters, they will nonetheless miss out on some aspects of Haeseni Culture if they do not create a character of northern origins.

How to Get Started

So, you’ve finally found Haense, but upon reaching it, you have no clue what to get started on. The gates might be closed or there's no one in the City. Worry not though, travellers, many of these issues are easily explainable.

If you find the gates closed upon your arrival to New Reza, it’s most likely because they have to be shut because the Kingdom is at War, and we don't really appreciate it when a band of raiders sneak into our City and start disrupting our roleplay. An easy enough solution to fix, simply shout for assistance at the gate, and someone in the center hub of the City will hear you and get help.

But what if there’s no response to my cries of help? Well, it’s most likely because you’ve come at an hour when most Haeseni Players aren’t online. The vast majority of Haense are all in the Eastern Standard Time-zone (EST), located along the eastern coastline of North America. So the best time you’ll find someone online will be at around 4pm-9pm with notable exceptions for the weekends.

So, now you’ve managed to get inside the City, but you have no clue what to do. If you’re looking for a quick and easy job, find the Crow’s Hearth Tavern and Inn and you’ll be set right up with a job maintaining and selling beverages at the counter there. You can ask almost anyone in town about wanting to apply, and you’ll be sent the right way. Additionally, the Tavern holds many rooms for spending the night in, so if you’ve got the minas, ask a Tavern Keeper about renting a room.

If you aren’t all that interested in working in a tavern, you could instead make your way to the Royal Palace, and get in touch with the Grand Lady of the Royal Court, currently Eryane, to be considered a position within the Court as a Servant, Handmaiden, Ladies-in-waiting or Pages. Being part of the retinue of servants is a surefire way to have your name remembered by important players of Haense, as you would be in their constant presence. So if you’re looking to go big in Haense, consider being a part of the Grand Lady’s workforce.

What if you’re feeling like you want to swing swords, listen to orders and do drills? Then the Brotherhood of Saint Karl is ready to accept you into its rank. Starting as an Initiate (Naumaan), the Brotherhood provides newcomers with free lodging, arms and armor, payment, rations, military training, and a chance for glory. And if you’re looking to make a name for yourself, the Brotherhood is the easiest way to achieve such. Competent and Loyal Soldiers are extremely valued within Haense, and many times, some of these soldiers even acquire Knighthood for their service after a lengthy amount of time, Knighted personally by the King during a Ceremony.

If you’re unable to find a member of the Brotherhood of induct you into the ranks, contact the following members either on forums, leaving a message with someone else, or on discord;

Lord Marshal, Otto Sigmar | Pureimp10 | Pureimp#4596

Erwin Barclay | Stillaminiguy | Miniguy15736#6963

Ovin | Erilobar | Erilobar#6916

By then, assuming you’ve spent some few months within Haense, one of the Noble Houses might ask you to make a character and become part of the Nobility of the Kingdom, which is the start of many political careers or other ambitions. Only on rare occasions does a newfound House rise to prominence within Haense, as many players value the current existing ones and the tradition and quality of roleplay they bring to the Kingdom.

Here’s some examples on how the most notable members of Haense became part of the playerbase:

Spoiler

Starting off with Arkantos1279 just for historical sake. Ark is credited for the creation of the playerbase around 4 years ago from a multitude of different other player bases. Now he lurks our discords, and is known as Papa Barbanov.

Probably Arkantos’ best friend, eddywilson2 is also a founding father of the Haeseni community, as well as being the very first King Haense ever had. Known for having a splendid understanding of minecraft combat and an optimistic, and jovial attitude.

Spoiler

Avoiding many of the Haeseni Monarchs, we land on Legoboy7984.

Started from humble beginnings, Legoboy joined Haense during the Duke’s War as a Soldier of the Duke’s Coalition. Despite Haense being dealt a severe blow, and losing all of its territory, Legoboy stuck around with the remnants of the community, but eventually left to make a character for the Dwarves. But at that point, it was already too late, Haense had ensnared him at this point, and when the Riga War eventually started, he came back to help out the resurging Haenseni Playerbase.

With the War ending in a victory for Haense, Lego had felt as if he had done his part, and left once more to help create Curon, but it would not age well, and eventually Curon was left in a poor state. Legoboy returned at the behest of Ark and Julius, and has been around ever since. Now a household name around the entire community, Legoboy serves the community by being the Duke of Carnatia, leading the House of Vyronov.

Spoiler

Being one of the most lovable Kings of Haense, we come at Piov.

Reasonable, kind, patient and attentive, Piov was originally a Priest dispatched to oversee the Haense community’s religious roleplay. But after many months, he was chosen to be an heir to a King that would die 2 years into his character’s birth. That certainly shook things up, but it didn't deter Piov from doing his best, he was coronated to much fanfare upon his character reaching adulthood and led a peaceful time in Haense’s history.

Though, due to many incidents and issues, his Kingdom was pitted against a much stronger one, and ultimately was defeated, the player base now sent in exile. However, he persevered in keeping the community from fracturing until it eventually managed to reclaim its territory many months later. Nowadays, Piov is a staunch politician, representing Haense in the Imperial Senate.

Spoiler

Being one of the founding fathers of the Haenseni Community, Pureimp10 or more commonly known as Kevin by other Haeseni players, has been around since even before the creation of Haense, coming from one of the main three other playerbases that would eventually create Haense.

Though in his humble beginnings he wouldn't have near the same amount of popularity he has nowadays, he would spend most of his time being part of and eventually ruling the House of Vanir, one of Haense’s core Noble Families, having noticed his keen sense for politicking.

Piov would be the one to bring Kevin into the Royal Fold, playing notable characters such as King Otto II, Britanus Vanir and Gerald Rauen.

Spoiler

A relatively recent addition to the community, Eryane has nevertheless spiralled her name to the top of Haense. During her time in Haense, she was accosted by another ruffian, DreamInSpace, who was at the time, playing the Queen of Haense.

In this exchange, Eryane was ultimately made a midwife of the Barbanov, but in a twist of events, the daughter of DreamInSpace was given to Eryane to play. Now Eryane is in charge of the Ekaterinburg Palace, managing the day to day activities of the Royal Court.

She is even rumored to potentially be the next Queen of Haense…

Spoiler

Next in the list is our quintessential lorekeeper, yopplwasupxxx. One of the founding fathers of Haense about 4 years ago, yoppl would eventually become one of the most significant King of Haense, during his character Stefan Barbanov’s existence.

Known for his diligence, intelligence and a flair of an attitude, yoppl’s time as King was one of the best Haense experienced, a true golden age in other words. Though it would not last has he decided to retire and spend the rest of his days in Haense as a lorekeeper, producing countless works of literature regarding the culture Haense, many said pieces utilized in this very post.

His influence has left a profound impact upon the community, dozens of his compilations on Haense’s culture still pinned and seen in the subforum of the Kingdom.

Spoiler

Julius55 is one of Haense’s most popular players, coming to the community at the very start of it when it was just Siegrad. He was renowned for his extreme dedication to what he set his mind on doing, becoming the undisputed weapons and resources manufacturer when lotc had a custom plugin for it all.

Many of Haense’s war efforts have been funded by Julius entirely, leading to many victories on the battlefield. He however, now floats around in the old folks discords and the like, having done his part on Lotc.

There are dozens more key figures in this community’s history, but to add them all in would extend this post past several thousand words, so many apologies for those who were not added in.

The Haeseni Mentality | Biharism

“I would have perished had I not persisted.”

The Kingdom of Haense adheres to a political ideology known as Biharism, whose namesake comes from Saint Henry Bihar. Marked down as center right on a standard political spectrum, Biharism advocates for the maintaining of tradition, nationalistic fervour and Pan-Highlanderism. This ideology dominates the political sphere of the Haeseni Government, with nearly all elected offices strictly abiding by its tenets.

As a result of this ideological devotion, Haense is a strict advocate of a player’s freedom of political mobility, most well defined in the following Jorenic Rights:

“To each freeman is his own life, to take it is to be a thief,

To each freeman his own time, to take it is to be a slaver,

To each freeman his own sword, to take it is to blind him,

To each freeman his own wife, to take it is to injure him,

And to each freeman his own farm, to take is to make him no man.”

III. SOCIETY

Royalty and Nobility

Since the establishment of the kingdom, the ruling house of Hanseti-Ruska has been that of House Barbanov. As the royalty of Haense, they are highly respected individuals among the Haeseni community. Alongside the royalty of Haense, there are numerous houses of nobility that hold a similar importance and high regard within Haense. Some of these houses include, according to the peerage of Haense: Alimar, Vyronov, Ludovar, Baruch, Stafyr, Ruthern, Kortrevich, Vanir, and Barclay.

These individuals can often be seen about the palace or within their respective manors. At most times, they are also assisting in the running of the Government.

The Royal House of Barbanov - Led by King Andrew III of Haense-Ruska | Emenzi

The Princely House of Alimar - Led by Grand Prince Otto Sigmar of Muldav | Pureimp10

The Ducal House of Vyronov - Led by Duke Robert Vyronov of Carnatia | legoboy7984

The Noble House of Baruch - Led by Count Sigmar Baruch of Ayr | drew2_dude

The Noble House of Stafyr - Led by Count Erich Stafyr of Nenzing | Scourgeoforder

The Noble House of Ruthern - Led by Konstantin Ruthern of Metterden | Firecrimson

Gentry, Burghers, and Commoners

Plenty individuals of Haense, however, are not of the nobility. There is a unique variety of commonors or those of high standing without being born of a noble house. Their importance is all the same, with many jobs for them to do and become such as tavernkeeps, guards, blacksmiths, knights, and so on. If they so wish and put in the effort, governmental positions are available outside of nobility as well. The commoners are the heart of Haense, with their loyalty and strong Haeseni culture.

Brotherhood of St. Karl

The Brotherhood of St. Karl is the current military force of Haense, working to guard the Haeseni lands and serve as a domestic peacekeeping force. Such a group was founded under the name of St. Karl – who is a strong historical figure amongst Haeseni history. The Brotherhood values strength, courage, and loyalty above all else– alongside unity together in protecting Haense from those who wish to bring harm to it and its people. Those seeking a military experience or a chance of glory are recommended to try joining. Even if they are not the most skilled in combat does not eliminate the chances or opportunities within the Brotherhood of St. Karl.

Soldiers looking to become even more involved with the Royal Family have the option of being handpicked into the Marian Retinue, Guards that protect the King and his Family, and are always by his side whenever he is in public. Only the most diligent and competent players that come from the soldier caste will be accepted into this tight knit group of players.

IV. SUBCULTURES OF HAENSE

Haense has historically incorporated many cultures into its playerbase. These cultures shaped the way Haense is today, imposing their legacy in the form of many aspects, such as how the government and military operates, the Haensic traditional language (Nauvmarian), and many others.

Raevir - Also known as Ruskans, denizens of an old Kingdom dating back to Anthos and pre-server history. Raevirs are a mix of Eastern Slavic People, namely the Rus, Rutherns and Novgorodians. As aforementioned, Haense in technicality is a Dual Monarchy, with the King being the Monarch of both the Kingdom of Haense and Ruska. It is the Raevir from which the Haeseni are mostly derived, with the House of Barbanov being descendants of the Imperial House of Carrion, the patriarchs of the Raevir people at its time.

Waldenian - during the old formation the City of Siegrad, and the Duchy of Haense, in the days of Athera, the Dukedom bordered the burgeoning state of Aesterwald at the time. From Aesterwald came the Waldenians, a people reminiscent of Central and Northern Germans. These Waldenians immigrated to Haense after Aesterwald was struck by a cataclysm, incorporating themselves into many positions of influence, as well as marrying into the House of Barbanov. These acts would leave a profound effect upon the growing Siegradic people, influencing much of its culture in the forms of; military structuring and a martial culture.

Hansetians or “Haeseni” - The primary culture of the Kingdom of Haense. The entirety of the Royal Family and the majority of the Kingdom’s Nobility as well as their accompanying subjects are comprised of these people - hardy folks accustomed to the harsh climates of the far north. Haesenians are an amalgamation of the cultures it has absorbed in the past, it ranges widely from its Raevir Roots to Waldenian Influence.

V. HAESENI VALUES

Northern Honor

These are the aspects that dominate the livelihood of a typical Haeseni person;

      ● A Haensic man will respect legitimate authority, and remain loyal to their King and Country.

      ● A man of Haense will know the strength of their sword. They would not kill churlishly, and will only take up arms  for a worthy cause.

      ● When at war, a Haensic man will be the first on the field, and the last to leave it.

      ● A true Highlander will never abandon a companion though they will honor sacrifice freely given.

      ● If an enemy were to surrender to a Haensic Man they would respect the honor of their prisoner, treating them properly, never stooping to such lows as torture.

      ● A Haensic man would never refuse a challenge from an equal.

      ● A Highlander will suffer death before dishonor.

      ● An honorable man of the North would protect those under their roofs as guests. Only harming a guest if they directly attempt to harm them or their kin.

      ● A Haensic man will defend the honor of the Church of the Canon, be god fearing, and respect all of it’s tenants.

      ● A man of the North shall never break an Oath, lest they be branded an Oathbreaker, and lose all of their honor.

      ● A Haensic man must not lie, for an honorable man has nothing to hide.

      ● A man of Haense will champion all that is right, and good against injustice, and the evils of the world.

      ● A Haensic lord who finds a criminal in their territory will give them a just trial, and punish them himself.

      ● A man of Haense will respect all women

      ● A Haensic man will never commit infidelity, staying true to the woman to whom he is wed.

Tradition

There are numerous customary and traditional events, foods, drinks, and ways of life that the Haeseni people value strongly. A common beverage almost always available at taverns or festivities is Carrion Black– a strong, hard liquor. Alongside this drink is Yopil, which is a mixture of berries and Carrion Black. Nevertheless, traditions and customs are the heart and soul of the Haeseni people. To look for more in-depth traditions, the following link is extremely useful for such endeavors.

VI. NEW MARIAN | NAUVMARIAN

What is New Marian? - Nauvmarian (New Marian in its own language) is an ancient pre-server history language that has the same relevancy as Latin in our current time. Only recently has the language been ‘revived’, now seeing usage in official Government documents and the likes. Recent Kings of Haense have begun a more in-depth restoration of the language, pushing for it to gain more influence within the playerbase of Haense. As a result, most common greetings and farewells you might hear from Haeseni players will be in Nauvmarian, words like Dravi (Goodbye) and Prevja (Hello) are the most popular. The informal greeting of “Eja” (Hey) can also be frequently seen used amongst the Haeseni. Sons and Daughters are usually seen calling their fathers, Papej, or Pader and their mothers, Mametr, or Mamej.

Additionally, most Haeseni players will sport Nauvmarian names along the lines of:

Aleksandra,

Andrey,

Branimar,

Sigmar,

Elizaveta

Spoiler

+1

I always love informative role-play guides to settlements. I think they're really helpful to newbies and attract players to come visit. Only recommendation I would make, is to place transparent images of each of the ‘notable player’s’ skins beneath their little spoiler blurb, to make it even easier for people to recognise them.
