Overall Demeanor

Gragmar tends to be overtly hostile at first. She's prone to yelling and stomping when she's trying to get her way - and she's very quick to throw a punch. However, if you can get her to settle down and stop throwing her weight around, you'll find she's actually rather cheerful, friendly, and curious about her surroundings. She's got a crude sense of humor and loves nothing more than a good fight, but she's decently intelligent and will ask a lot of questions if properly prompted. She tends to be a bit emotional, sensitive, and cries / angers easily. But she's also easy to please and gets excited over simple joys - such as good food, good drink, and a good fight.

Strengths

Physically Large / Strong
Gragmar is an orc, so great physical strength and athletic prowess come naturally to her. Her great height and weight give her an advantage in combat against the smaller, weaker races. It's hard to intimidate Gragmar or push her around. Mostly, any threats made against her will just make her laugh. However, when it comes to fighting against other orcs, she’s at somewhat of a disadvantage due to be being smaller and lighter than them – especially male orcs.

Curious
Gragmar may come across as unintelligent at first, but her lack of knowledge springs from a place of ignorance rather than stupidity. She's unfamiliar with a great deal of things outside her tribe and other races' customs are confusing to her. While she might be dismissive toward anything that's not sufficiently "orc-y", she's also curious and interested in learning. She’ll ask a great deal of questions if prompted properly and she’s very keen to understand how things work in detail.

Artistic

Gragmar, interestingly, has a strong sense of aesthetics and craftsmanship, as indicated by her love of jewelry and accessories. “Shiniez” – aka jewelry – is one of her favorite things. She is very artistically inclined, but has never had the opportunity to explore her creative side due to spending most of her life in a hunter-gatherer tribe. She likes to draw, carve wood, and shape clay. Despite having large, unwieldy hands, she’s skilled with fine motor movements and crafting tiny details. Gragmar is also surprisingly patient with the ability to sit down and focus solely on one thing for hours upon hours at a time.

Weaknesses

Sensitive / Emotional

Gragmar is a being of strong, passionate emotions that often overwhelm her better judgment. She’s sensitive and it’s easy to upset her. When she’s calm, she’s fairly friendly and good humored. But when upset, she quickly turns into a whirlwind of crying, yelling, stomping, and – yes – punching. Gragmar reacts to strong emotions usually by either pitching massive temper tantrums or by running away and hiding. Because of her somewhat alien and isolated culture, it can be hard to tell just what trips Gragmar’s nerves. But while it’s easy to accidentally hurt her feelings, it’s also fairly easy to calm her down. (She likes hugs, if you’re brave enough to hug a 6’10” crying orc.)

Aggressive
Gragmar tends to get off on the wrong foot with potential acquaintances. Like most orcs, she tends to throw her weight around and act aggressively at the outset of any encounter. Combined with her tendency to quickly anger, this can be somewhat dangerous – both for her and for others.

Immature

Gragmar is a fully mature orcish adult, but she tends to have a very youthful demeanor. Her interests skew toward more immature things and she tends to react to things in an adolescent, juvenile manner. For example, Gragmar tends to be impulsive and not to think about the consequences of her actions until after she does them. She’s also easily upset and tends to cry, hide, or stomp when she doesn’t get her way – along with being extraordinarily stubborn when she doesn’t want something. Gragmar is fairly intelligent, but she’s immature with a bit more growing up to do.

Spoiler

Gragmar originally hails from a tribe of orcs that splintered off from the War Uzg in the early days of Asulon. Rumor has it that her tribe – the Buurztraga (translated into Common as ‘Dark Tribe’ or ‘Night Tribe’) – was founded by the ancient orc Urara’Gorkil, daughter of Mogroka. Relentlessly hunted for being traitors and whitewashes, the Buurztraga adopted a crepuscular nomadic lifestyle. As a result of their separation from the War Uzg, they developed a distinctly unique Orcish culture with their own dialect of Blah, their own religion, and their own cultural norms. However, they retained their belief in humility, simplicity, shamanistic worship, and strength.

Gragmar found herself exiled from the Buurztraga after she murdered one of the tribal elders. Said tribal elder – none other than Gragmar’s own mother – wanted to sacrifice Gragmar’s newborn cub to Mat, the Spirit of Death. In an attempt to protect her child, Gragmar snuck into the elder’s tent at night and strangled her to death. The other Buurztraga orcs discovered the brutal slaying and ejected Gragmar from their ranks. Lost and alone without her tribe, Gragmar began to wander in search of a new home. She eventually found her way to Helena, the capital city of Humanity, where she ran into scholar, historian, and scientist Edward Napier.

Edward Napier had a long-held fascination for orcs. He wasted no time attempting to befriend Gragmar. Initially, Gragmar rebuffed his attempts at friendship. However, she eventually had to face the reality that she was completely alone in the world without her tribe. She needed someone to help her navigate human society. Gragmar reluctantly tolerated his presence in exchange for knowledge – but soon discovered that she had more in common with him than she thought.  In spite of everything, Gragmar began to grow attached to Edward and eventually even fell in love with him. Edward, for his part, rapidly became infatuated with Gragmar as well. His deep, dark secret was that his fixation on Orcish culture sprang from more than just intellectual curiosity. He sincerely found orcish women beautiful – and Gragmar especially so. Of course, their budding relationship immediately hit upon several snags. Under both Church and Imperial law, humans were forbidden from marrying nonhumans. Regardless, Edward and Gragmar were determined to make a life together. So while they were not allowed to officially marry, the two lived as committed life-partners and co-parented their twin children (John / Garakh and Sarah / Orgha) together. They kept their relationship partially secret. In public, Edward only ever referred to Gragmar as his “friend.” They settled in the countryside of Kaedrin, where they could enjoy being together in relative peace and anonymity. There, they lived for over 15 years.

Trouble arose, however, when Edward was forced to go public against his will.  Edward received a nomination from the Ministry of Justice to become a Circuit Court Judge. At his confirmation hearing, a member of the opposition party put the all-important question to Edward – “Are you having intimate relations with an orc?” Honest to a fault, Edward answered yes… shocking the entire Empire. A court case ensued to punish Edward for the crimes of miscegenation and fornication. Luckily, Edward negotiated a plea deal. However, with his secret relationship now in the open, he became a laughingstock throughout Oren. Edward would happily bear the shame, though, so long as he could stay with his love. As for Gragmar, she hardly cared what humans thought of her. Worried about Edward’s reputation, though, she published a statement of her own where she divulged her half of the story.

However, this would not be the end of the couple’s troubles. Edward became embroiled in a secret and violent government conspiracy. His good friend, Tanith Vursur, was kidnapped and tortured at the hands of two high-ranking Orenian government officials – Minister of the Interior Padraig O’Rourke and Governor of the Novellen Ostromir Carrion. Edward served as one of the key witnesses in the incident. Seeking justice for Tanith, Edward confronted Padraig openly in the streets of Helena. Padraig began to taunt and threaten Edward... unaware that Gragmar stood right behind him. Enraged by the threats made against her lifemate, Gragmar grabbed Padraig and started savagely beating him. Meanwhile, Edward pulled out a bowie knife and stabbed Padraig in the throat. The ISA immediately descended on Edward and Gragmar, arresting them both. The ISA were forced to stab Gragmar in order to subdue her and she nearly bled to death on the Bastille's cell floors, but a swift emergency medical treatment spared her life.

Miraculously, Padraig survived the double assault. Gragmar luckily escaped from ISA custody and fled to the kingdom of Haense. Edward, however, remained imprisoned – possibly facing execution.  Edward submitted a request for injunctive relief, which was granted, and made a Motion for Mistrial. The hope was that he could appeal his case and - if Padraig was found guilty of the accusations levied by Tanith – Edward might be exonerated of his crimes. However, after “investigating”, the Solicitor-General of Oren dismissed all charges against Padraig and Ostromir – leaving Edward little, if any, legal defense for his actions. To their surprise, though, the court dropped all charges against the parties involved. With that, Edward was free.

The couple rejoined in Haense, where they were tasked with trying to figure out their lives moving forward into the future. It had become painfully clear that human society would never truly accept their love for one another. Exhausted by the racism and controversy that plagued her, Gragmar opted to hide away from public life and instead focus on raising her two children - John and Sarah - in the home. Out of sight, out of mind – as they say. If the only way she could live peacefully with her lover was to conceal herself from the public eye, then Gragmar would do it without complaint. She and Edward later received full pardons for their crimes.

Several years passed with Gragmar and Edward living quietly in the country. Edward's reputation healed from the incident and many forgot that he was romantically involved with an orc in the first place. He attained the rank of Supreme Court Justice and few people ever mentioned Gragmar in his presence again (with many believing she had died after being stabbed). The couple's children grew to adulthood and began pursuing careers of their own. Edward and Gragmar ran into trouble, unfortunately, when their son John decided to take up a career in politics like his father.

John resembled his father far more than his mother - and thus he was able to comfortably pass as human. Few people would have guessed that John Napier was, in fact, a half-orc. To most, he simply looked like a tall, broad human man. Thanks to his appearance, John did not suffer many difficulties navigating human society. He set his sights upon the House of Commons, with an intent to change the law and have Oren acknowledge half-orcs as full persons with all accompanying rights. Unfortunately, under the law, half-orcs were disallowed from running for office. If John wanted to hold political power, he needed to obscure his origins.

Edward and Gragmar had been together for well over 30 years at that point. However, they had never legally married one another. Canonist law forbid interspecies unions, so Edward and Gragmar were not technically husband and wife. Edward decided to seek out a 'human' wife to act as a decoy and pose as John's mother. He settled on his longtime friend Yuliya Styrne. Gragmar was, initially, upset at her husband and son for engaging in this deceptive scheme. Edward reassured her that he was not romantically interested in Styrne and only using the marriage for political purposes. Even so, Gragmar was left feeling uneasy. In her heart, she worried  that this human woman was trying to steal her husband and cubs. Luckily, Edward and Styrne's scheme wouldn't last. The elderly playwright died just two short years after the false marriage.

Afterward, the Napier family settled back into normality. Gragmar watched with satisfaction as her son, John, climbed the ranks of the Orenian Ministry of Justice. Her children's success proved, beyond a doubt, that her cubbies were strong, brave, and could find success in Oren. Even if Oren rejected Gragmar, they couldn't reject her cubbies. Gragmar's daughter, Sarah, lagged behind her brother, though. Sarah's more orcish appearance proved to be a serious detriment to her advancement in society. John, with his more human looks, could skate by while Sarah struggled to hold down even a basic job. Gragmar worried for Sarah, but had a hard time connecting with her daughter. Sarah resented her mother for a wide variety of reasons, which proved to be a barrier to their relationship. Gragmar loved Sarah intensely - just as any mother loves her children - but struggled to get Sarah to open up to her. No matter how Gragmar tried, she couldn't get Sarah to talk about her problems.

Tragedy struck the Napier family when Sarah disappeared. It was not the first time Sarah had run away from home, but Gragmar had a strange feeling about this time. Lately, Sarah had been talking with her friends about visiting Krugmar. An old friend of Sarah's - a girl named Joanne-Lorraine Martins - had vanished into Krugmar several years earlier. Rumor had it that Joanne had given herself willingly to the orcs as a snaga (or slave). Sarah wanted to pursue Joanne into the orcish nation and find out the truth. Gragmar attempted to warn her daughter against this unwise course of action, but Sarah would not listen. As the months dragged on with no word from Sarah, Gragmar began to fear the worst. Edward, her lifemate, remained in denial regarding Sarah's disappearance. Gragmar eventually realized she had to do something.

Gragmar set out on a search across Almaris for her missing daughter.

Gragmar hails from a remote, nomadic tribe that split off from Krugmar in the early days of Asulon. This tribe is known as the “Buurztraga” in old Blah – often translated as ‘Shadow Tribe’ or ‘Dark/Night Tribe’. They chose this name after being forced underground by the War Uzg, who tried to hunt them for being defectors and ‘whitewashes’. They initially splintered from the War Uzg due to their belief that the orcs of the War Uzg had become soft and lazy.

The Buurztraga are culturally very different from the orcs of the War Uzg. Because of their persecution, they adopted a nomadic lifestyle where they frequently changed camps and moved from place to place. Rather than considered cowardly, it was strategic – as they knew they did not have the numbers to defeat their persecutors head on and instead leaned toward more guerrilla hit-and-run tactics.  The Buurztraga often moved by night, which is what led to them adopting their name.

Eventually, the War Uzg forgot about their splinter tribe of defectors and the Buurztraga were able to live in peace (or, at least, whatever orcs think of as peace). However, they still kept their tradition of moving frequently and traveling/hunting by night when the air was cooler and they were less exposed to prying eyes. Orcs of the Buurztraga dislike the thought of permanent structures. They live out of tent camps that are easy to disassemble and move. Buurztraga orcs find the massive sandstone structures of Krugmar to be distasteful. They believe that staying in one place makes orcs fat, lazy, and complacent. Being constantly on the move is healthier for both the mind and the spirit. Buurztraga Orcs follow the hunt and the turning of the seasons.

The Buurztraga have a primitive anarcho-communist and democratic social organization. They have no formalized hierarchy with no official leaders. When it’s time for the tribe to make a decision, the Buurztraga gather together in a large group and debate the merits of each choice until they reach a consensus. While they have no official leaders, great respect is given to orcish elders who have lived a long time and fought in many battles. It’s expected for younger orcs to listen to the wisdom of their elders. Social roles within the tribe are also fluid – with members of the tribe fulfilling different roles and jobs on an as-needed basis rather than sticking to a single role such as ‘hunter’ or ‘shaman’. The Buurztraga share all resources among the tribe and there’s no concept of private property or money.  Because orcs frequently die in battle, it’s considered foolish to cling to material possessions.

They  also do no form nuclear family units. All adult members of the tribe raise and educate children communally. As such, there’s no special bond between parent and child. Children are considered the responsibility of the entire tribe. Buurztraga orcs mate by the season, changing mates often, and lifemate couplings are considered extremely rare and unusual. (Again, a result of orcs frequently dying in battle – it doesn’t make a great deal of sense to bind one’s self to a single mate for life if that mate is likely to die.)

There is no code of law among the tribe and, instead, disputes are settled by informal bouts of combat. If someone does something you dislike, you beat them up – plain and simple. This leads to a sort of mob-justice among the Buurztraga, where an orc who does something that pisses the tribe off gets savagely beaten by the group and occasionally killed. The Buurztraga’s sense of morality leans toward supporting the group – with traits like selfishness and greed being heavily discouraged and punished. Hoarding resources is seen as very wicked among the Buurztraga.
