Church Aflame

Taking a walk about the all too-quiet town, Eliza smelled smoke. As she came around a corner, the church and tavern came into view, the former with a dark plume of smoke coming from a large hole in its roof. The lady bit her lip to keep from swearing aloud as she rushed towards the burning chapel, her face white. Standing before the doors of the place, Eliza cupped her hands around her mouth. “Hello?! Is anyone in there?!” The crackle and snaps of burning wood echoed back at her shouts, and the Duchess stepped inside, urging her karin to remain outside the door. The large feline creature stalked back and forth at the entrance, clearly frightened but also watching her Adunian owner closely. 

 

Eliza stepped carefully within. “Hello?!” She called out again, coughing in the smoke. The air was heavy with clouds of dark smoke and her eyes stung as she forced them to stay open, searching. The front of the church was engulfed in flame, the main support beam of the ceiling lain upon the floor and seats, splintered and glowing and crackling as it burned. Her eyes swept the room as she made her way through the burning remnants of the church. Eliza tripped on a broken piece of the stone floor, catching herself with her hands and jumping back as the skin on her arm screamed in pain. Ignoring it, the Adunian hurried about, ensuring that the room was indeed empty. 

 

Leaning against a wall on the street, Eliza sighed. “Well, at least it was empty.” She said to her karin with a shrug as she rubbed the creature’s head between its salt-horns. When the rain started, the Duchess closed her eyes at the sound of the hissing flames being slowly extinguished.

Nadia Buckfort saw the burned Church, and dropped to her knees letting out a cry. She began praying, “God, how a terrible thing has happened. A tragic event. Please, save this Church, help us please.”

"Azdrazi! Those.. those wretched monsters!!" The Cardinal of Albarosa roars as he tosses the notice from his hand. The paper catches the air, and drifts pathetically down towards the floor as his feet. The enraged Clergyman proclaims in righteous, GOD-loving fury "May He damn them all! Damn them all, I say!!"
