II

The warmth of fading daylight spared the fortress-city from bite of the autumnal cold, illuminating its recent siege scars along the battlements. An uneasy calm held was together by the afternoon's light; the third year since this Kingdom went to war with itself. The stench of dried blood clung to the air, yearning for a fresh coat.

The King wore check pattern of white and black, his head hunched beneath a crown that did not yet fit. He had more the face of a soldier than a monarch. A knife lay in his back and smoke rose from where he ought to have bled. Behind him great beastly nostrils huffed from his smouldering wound; the silhouette of the Dragon. One of its eyes a gleaming black diamond, the other an amethyst.

Unclear shapes cowered beneath the dragon, hunched loyally to the Terror it suggested. None dared face the King, for they knew themselves as Traitors. A clawed hand emerged from the winged shadow that dwarfed all others in the throne room, its talons grasping toward the crown atop the corpse's head...

And the Smiling Sun hung low for three hundred years.
