On the Intervention of St. Lothar

and the National Motto of Balian

ST. LOTHAR’S WORDS

 

During the diaspora following the St. Ari’s Day Massacre, the hobbled remains fled upon boats guided only by the wayward star of Saint Lothar. It drew them southwards, and the sea’s storms tore through many hulls. Thousands died, and the dry land where the remnants emerged was bleak, without water, and filled with dangerous creatures that tore man’s flesh.

 

Yet, at the time when the group rested and Prince John Casimir prayed atop the Rock of Revelation, their prayers were answered. Wet springs burst from the outcropping, and the people were delighted with the gifts of GOD. An arduous journey has been endured to cleanse them of their imperial stain. And so it ended with a blessing from the Almighty Creator.

 

Yet those who trod far from the dunes of the south often forget the words that John spoke that day. Mothers speak this tale unto their children, fathers unto their sons, and now I do so unto you:

 

In Balian, they say that the King John kneeled upon the Rock that day and spoke in tongues unknown to the natives or the foreigners alike. A radiant cross illuminated the masses.

 

And so he spoke loudly, proclaiming the phrase St. Lothar said unto him:

IN HOC SIGNO VINCES!

 

So too, when the men of Balian enter combat, they invoke the words of Lothar, and they say unto those who would oppose them: 

IN HOC SIGNO VINCES!

 

And when men of the Brotherhood, cloth, or state pass on to live with GOD above, we say unto them:

IN HOC SIGNO VINCES!
