In the year 1803 of the First Age, the Iron Plague, which had been a common thorn in the side of our clan since the days of yore, had grown deadly. It had always been manageable with tonics and treatments made by elders, but for an unknown reason, the plague had grown resistant to it. It began to rampage through our ranks, decimating the Mossborn Clan. Despite our wisdom in herbology, the medics could not find a treatment or a cure with the herbs on our island. Going to the mainland to find treatment was out of the question since a war against flame incarnate was ravaging the mainland of Arcas, while the plague rendered the bodies of the Mossborn too weak to be able to fight back.

Seeing no other choice, Donachan The Cloudy, our third chief, gathered some healthy dwarves to sail across the vast domain of Belka. Despite the peril of the task, Donachan led the expedition himself. He was the most talented sailor upon our holy island, and he had sworn an oath to Belka instead of Anbella when he ascended to the position of Chief. Using a crew of 50 dwarves, they manned the sturdiest ship available to the clan, the Foamcutter, which was a blessed vessel, having survived dozens of raids upon the mainland.

Their aim was to find a new realm that hosted a plant or cure that could treat the Iron Plague. At the very or perhaps to find a new home in the inevitability that the old one will fall.

When the crew set sail, they weathered great and awful storms. The Brathmordkin of the Ocean Belka was enraged as Khorvad, The Fallen Brathmordkin, appeared nearby. Khorvad seeing an opportunity to sow chaos, sent a band of sirens to disrupt the voyage of Foamcutter. The crew had fought against many other descendants upon their ships, but were no match for the aquatic prowess of the sirens, as they shred the hull of the boat.

In an act of sacrifice, to distract the sirens and give the boat enough time to escape, Donachan the Cloudy dove into the cold depths of Belka’s realm. He swung and stabbed with his harpoon, taking down a few sirens, though they swam around him like sharks, rending his flesh with swipes of their claws. Donachan was defeated by the sirens, his lifeless body sank deep into the Belka’s domain. Enraged, Belka cast a great tidal wave between the sirens and the ship, to deliver the crew of the Foamcutter away from Khorvad’s agents.

The people aboard the vessel managed to survive the horrible ordeal, but their spirits were stricken with terrible grief, only ameliorated slightly when they saw the lands of the realm known as Almaris today. With the memory of Donachan’s sacrifice in mind, and the knowledge of their kinsman suffering back home, they sought to establish a hold upon some mountains near the eastern shores of the realm. They named this hold Fort Greenbeard, in honour of Donachan, who enjoyed keeping green beads in his beard for fashion.

The small gathering of dwarves got to digging out the mountain, carving simple stone halls and rooms to place their belongings. The herbalists who joined upon the trip spent many days and nights searching for any new flora that might be of use. They found many plants, roots and herbs that could be used in the field of medicine, but none that could help treat the Iron Plague.

Fort Greenbeard was completed in 1805, but during that time no cures had been found and many dwarves had been feeling dejected. Soon a sickness broke out within the hold, the chef they had brought had been infected with Iron Plague, only it had remained dormant all this time. This was another of Khorvad’s vile tricks. He spat in the face of Anbella, The Brathmordkin of the Hearth, as he used the unwitting cook to spoil the hearths of these dwarves. Soon the Iron Plague gripped the Fort tightly.

Seeing as their expedition was a failure, the Mossborn of Fort Greenbeared secured their home with traps to make sure it would not be raided once they left, so that it may be used again should they return. Some dwarves perished from the plague before they could return, while others chose to stay, feeling they could preserve their years of effort for others. But ultimately, the Foamcutter departed again to their sacred island, arriving in 1806.

Ealisaid, despite not being a particularly sea-fairing dwarf, appreciated the Foam Cutter for its service, and very much wanted a replica made. She was going to have to ask Tuzic.
