Birds chirped and sang their songs beneath the trees in front of her house. She sat on a wooden stool,Β her gaze wandering the landscape of the Balinese countrysideβa beautiful view for the old and humble lady nonetheless. Her face was adorned with a faintΒ smile as she gazed up at the sky. The sky was nearly clear, with only a few sheep-like clouds in the background above the hilly wheat and vineyard fields. The wind blew with a gentle breeze. Β "If only my brother, sister, and cousin were here" Ravn sighed, turning her head to her right, looking inside her house through the open door. A pictureΒ of VerΓ³nica and Diane stood on an otherwise bare, cold wall, both captured with beautiful expressions in their prime. She chuckled, delving into her thoughts and memories. Β "I remember them well" she hummed, her faint smile turning into a grin. "We had a lot of fun, didnβt we?" Her words were spoken in a soft whisper to herself, only to laugh moments later. She realized she was alone in the fondness of the memory. Bitterness and loneliness spread over her heart afterwardβa reminder that she was one of the few left of her generation. All were nearly gone, even one of her own children had passed before her. Β She took a deep breath and sighed, feeling the weight of her solitude. "My last years werenβt the most successful ones..." she lamented, laying her right handΒ on her forehead- slowly moving it over her face until it lost its hold. "And my grandchildren rarely visit me..." Her gaze shifted to her left, where theΒ laughter of her five adopted children could be heard from a nearby tree-lined avenue. "But at least I have my beautiful girls." another sigh left her, this time withΒ relief that she had them around. Β Ravn moved her hand underneath the table beside her to pick a small wine bottle from a bucket filled with ice. She took a glass that had been placed next to it and poured the wine, bringing it slowly to her lips. "What a taste, with a hint of sweetness" she murmured, grinning faintly. Her body leaned back into her seat, and she murmured again, "A hint of sweetness... like life itself," before falling into a sleep from which she would not wake again... MercyAzalea Β Β 405 Share Posted August 12, 2024 She had collected the letter hours earlier that day. Β Perhaps it was fear that drove her to put off reading it; perhaps deep down, she knew what words sat ahead of her upon the enclosed sheet of paper. The cold of Norland had always brought her a subtle form of comfort, but that day the winds felt exceptionally colder. It knew, and so did she. But she could not bring herself to open it. Her Grandmother very rarely wrote to her but she knew that handwriting. Β It was the same inflections of ink that taught Irena how to read, and how to write. She could see her own writing style within it, in a way. She recognised the subtlety of the flicks upon letters. A gentle smile set upon her face as she trudged through the snow towards the door of the Gylldene Clan's abode. Bittersweet. Trembling hands then fumbled with the keys. She had opened the door so many times yet she would still try and insert the key the wrong way. Stepping inside, and into the warmth. The cold could not bite her freckled skin in there. Closing the door behind her, with a soft 'click', and she was safe again. At last would she sit at the dining table of the silent room. It was late, too late for anyone of the Clan to be lingering awake. Pushing her pink curls behind her, she would take a sharp inhale of breath. She had hoped that wandering around the cold city would mean she never had to open this letter. Β But she reached for the letter opener, the blade easily dislodging the wax seal. Flicking the envelope back, and at last removing the sheet of paper, folded over once to fit. Setting the envelope down, her eyes had already started to water before she had unfolded the page. Another sharp inhale; how could she subject herself to reading the last words her Grandmother had written? Never again would she recieve words from Ravn. But still, she knew she would forever grieve if she did not give herself this clarity. Irena was always in a perpetual state of grieving her Mother, feeling many things were left unsaid or undone. With Ravn, all was cut and clear. The last time she had seen her Grandmother, she was being accused of a God-awful crime in the courts of Balian. She had convinced herself that it was not true, not for Ravn's sake but for her own. Unfolding the page, tears streaked her cheeks as at last her eyes fell upon the words written to her. Β A sob escaped her lips, a sound she barely recognized as her own in her state of grief. She pressed the letter to her chest, as if it could somehow bring her closer to the woman she had once been so close to, but who now felt so impossibly far away. The grief was raw, aching, and tinged with regret for the time lost, for the distance she had allowed to grow between them. Even in the warmth of the Clan's home, she could feel the cold of Norland seep into her bones, knowing a part of her would forever remain in Ravn's home from her momentary visit years ago, where her Grandmother's love had once been as warm as Balian's summer sun. Frostdrop1 Β Β 1843 Share Posted August 12, 2024 Ser Audo Weiss opened his palms, extending his welcome to the long absent Balianese woman. "Welcome home, Lady Ravn." He greeted with a soft glance he failed to bore in life, and a face that was young - and whole. "Vy don't need to be lonely anymore." He motioned back, then, to SierraΒ and the Weiss who had joined him, treating her as one of them. ~~~Marus Weiss, blissfully unaware of Ravn's familial ties, casually noted that he no longer saw the old woman in the streets of Valdev. As his hand searched the mail, his hand stilled on the letter. "O-oh..." He quietly muttered to himself, as a feeling of guilt crept over his heart. For all the people he tried to terribly to help, he never realised he had never even said a hello to that solitary old woman. Crumpling the letter somewhat, he turned and was quick to rush it to the Viscount and, too, Viktor with his name being blatantly listed. Albeit, he did wonder who Marian was...Β @CasChaos@ItsMisterPip
ItsMisterPip Β Β 409 Share Posted August 12, 2024 Viktor Weiss skimmed over the letter addressed to the Weiss family, thanks to Marus for delivering it to his hands. With furrowed eyebrows, he let out a sigh, Β gently foldingΒ the letter and handedΒ it back over the younger Weiss. βSpasiba.β He muttered in thanksΒ before retreating to the stables to retrieve his horse. Β Ravn was a kind woman in Viktorβs eyes, even though their last conversation turned into an unfavorable exchange. He couldnβt even remember what they had argued about, entirelyβ¦Β He recollected on the memories they shared together, especially those when he was younger. Though he felt sorrow for the loss of his aunt, something deeper now settled strangely within himβ¦ Viktor set out atop his steed, leaving the walls of Nau Valdevβ¦ Β Viktor was one of the last Weiss left of hisΒ generation, his sister Marian being another. As elder years now crept upon him, he began longing for more time with his family. The passing of Ravn sparked something within him, realizing that waiting around couldnβt be the answerβ¦ Β Viktor didnβt know exactly where Marian was, but he would find out. He began his journey into the frigid countryside of Haense and beyond to deliver the message of Ravnβs passing and to reunite with his sister. Viktor spoke into the breeze, βVa ve Maan, Ravn,βΒ as he began his search.
