Defining Cosmology

The field of Cosmology is ultimately concerned with the study of the principles and laws that govern and define Creation. Moreover, the place mankind is afforded within its structure, and lastly the Salvation reserved for mankind by God. The foundational assumption in cosmology is that God’s Creation, thereby also refered to as the ‘universe’ or the ‘cosmos’ (Akritian kosmos, or ‘arrangement’) is 1) a deliberately created and ordered ‘artifact’ of God, 2) that time and space do not govern the cosmos equally, but rather as God intends and 3) that anything that might exist outside the cosmos is only attributable to God and is incomprehensible to us. 

 

Philosophers, beware! It is prudent and crucial to heed that our faculty for thought and reason is subject wholly to the desire of God, and it is a grave offense to speculate that any theory described herein is anything but deduced thought, and claims revelation to no truth but that which is inspired by Sciprture (Spirit 2:17). 

 

Scientists and philosophers who falter in their convictions often conclude that the way to go about uncovering universal truths is by research of the world surrounding us, and the deduction of natural law and the physics to their barest axioms. These physicists yet err gravely when forgetting that those laws bind only our temporal world, and are amiss when considered with the transcendence of planes beyond material reach, and the magnitude and complexity of the cosmos at large as opposed to existence as perceived by our individual and narrow lens. There exist factors such as time and space, but also the material and the incorporeal by which we might be bound in this world but by which His Creation at large in entirety is not, for His devices are bound by no law but that which He inscribes, for He is the only Sovereign - the Pantokrator (Akritian Pantos i.e. “all” and kratos i.e. “potent” or “mighty”), and is therefore subject to no force foreign to Him. 

 

The purpose of this article is to study and define only some of the attributes that are intrinsic to His creation (though from the outset we fail in that mission! For we can never claim total comprehension of any of His devices, but only that which is afforded us by a prudent logic and by His Revelations). The heart of this essay is derived from the story of creation as interpreted and inferred from the revelation of Gospel, in particular the Book of Provenance, although utmost understanding cannot be extracted without help from context in the rest of Scripture, therefore that when such passages be used they will be referred accordingly.

 

Observe and obey, throughout all this essay, this one truth: That the universe, or creation, which consists of all the planes, and existence in an of itself, are dependent wholly on the Lord and exist solely of His Will. They may be equated to His artefact, and nothing within can motion without His moving of it; the celestial bodies, the beasts of the earth, the gentle wind or the rush of the river. Our duty is nothing short of the diligent study of these forces, as far as our capacity for understanding may allow, so that we may know how to worship Him to our utmost ability.

Timeline of Creation

  • God exists. He precedes creation, and will succeed creation.
  • Creation of the planes (existence, universe), among them; Seven Skies, the World, the void.
  • Creation of the Immortals; Aenguls assigned over what is (physicality), Daemons over what is not (abstract). The Immortals reside in the Skies and are forbidden from the void.
  • Shaping of the World; the Immortals are instructed to shape the world, and God breaths life (lesser souls) into every beast within.
  • Iblees’ Rebellion; The Deceiver, an Immortal, by his own free will, covets God’s power and hopes to depose Him. He descends where he is forbidden, the void, and God scolds him. By his own choice, he is without God’s love.
  • Creation of the First Man and Woman; The plan for creation is thwarted by the Deceiver, and God therefore creates the First Man and Woman, who live virtuously, and He is satisfied.
  • Birth of the Four Brothers; First Man and Woman beget the Four Brothers.
  • Ascension of the First Man; God was satisfied, and called the pair to the Sixth Sky so that the four brothers can inherit the world. The First Man obliges, but the First Woman loves her sons more than God (disobeyance to God: she commits the first sin [pride, ego] of mortalkind).
  • Uncovering of the Imperfections; God ‘uncovered the imperfections of the Sons’, and the First Woman was humbled and did as she was bid and ascended the Sixth Sky. Descendantkind carries the inherited sin of the first woman, to forever fall short of Him.

Ordering of the Planes

To note firstly, in the Book of Provenance there are numbered three planes (the seven skies as consistory of one heavenly plane), but there might yet be more, which are simply not revealed to us and escape our capacity for understanding. It would be negligent of us to assume God’s creation to be bound by anything but His will, and therefore no definitive answer lies for the number of planes He has rendered.

 

Scripture describes the three planes, often, as vertically consecutive, and following a spacial hierarchy of distance from God’s Throne in the foremost sky. 

 

“And that which was farthest from the Lord became the Void, and that which was nearest became the Skies, and betwixt them was the World…”  (Gospel 1:3)

 

The use of the terms ‘ascension’ and ‘descent’ in describing passage between the planes (as with the Immortals and the Exalted) supports this conception. This understanding is also further popularized in the symbology of the cross of Lorraine in its ancient and current variations. Although the description of this ‘vertical’ ordering aids in fostering the integrity of the story of creation, it might not allude to the actual physical presence of these planes in relation to another. To any who hold on to the literal (as opposed to literary) veracity of this structuring, I recite thus; 

 

Now it came that as the Lord GOD ascended to His throne, all of Horen’s people were greatly weakened.” 

(Gospel 3:2)

 

One might presume that the movement, or physical distance between the planes or between God and the planes is indeed a condition of God’s presence. It says so in the very passage; that when God ascended (departed from the lower plane onto a higher), the people of Horen were weakened. But no! Heed not this folly, when it is Truth that God is omnipresent!

 

His moving between the planes is intended as a figure of speech in scripture. It is without doubt that the spirit of the people of Horen had indeed dwindled when the era of revelation dawned, some time after  the reception of Virtue. (“They could not work the miracle of revelation, as Horen, but could only instruct through speech and example.”) (Gospel 3:3) But it is too without doubt that God was not detached, or departed from any corner of creation. Therefore it is folly to believe that God can not be, or that He is less in one place than in another! He is everywhere, to the full effect of His presence and always. The extent of His material, manifest presence as recorded in Scripture and the Sacred Tradition (i.e. in the form of miracle, or manifestation of the Holy Spirit, etc.) is irrelevant to this. Because God chooses to exhibit a physical or perceptible force of divinity in the material plane does not mean he is present there more than in a mundane corner of the world. It simply means He has chosen to exhibit a force of divinity there, which is equally infinite anywhere in the cosmos.

 

 The folly of contrarians, who often subscribe to idol-worship or self-Man worship, would levy the argument that the void must be without God, for it is a place where ‘nothing exists’. They then conclude that God is therefore not a Creator, or that His essence is not omnipresent. They, whose facility for reason falls short of serious contemplation of a basic truism, do not consider that God is indeed present in all places, and finds utility in the existence of such places, for Scripture had foretold the ignoramuses of their foolishness;

 

“And God saw that it (His creation of the planes) was good.” (Gospel 1:5)

 

There is nothing that escapes His thoughtfulness, and the forbiddence of the void for the bearing of the Immortals (Gospel 1:4) as an instruction betrays nothing of His presence or jurisdiction therein; God exists equally across all creation, and for the false-thinkers who seek escape He is ever-watchful (Spirit, 3:9). There is a second concept to the ordering of the planes, moreso known among gnostics or mystics of the faith, that of a spherical structure, but that will not be touched upon in this dissertation.

 

We learn in this chapter:

- God is the Creator of all existence.

- There is no fault in His Creation.

- There is no place where He is not present.

 

The Seven Skies

And by His word the Planes were rendered, and His throne was in the Seventh Sky.” (Gospel 1:3)

 

The Kingdom of Heaven, or the Seven Skies, are described in Provenance as the domain of the Throne of God. We read in scripture that His Word was adequate in the formation of the skies; what we see as the perfect summit in the hierarchy of creation. What does His Word mean, however, in this context?

 

At face value, the obvious meaning (pshat) of ‘And by His word the planes were rendered’ is that God has commanded, or ordered, the creation of the cosmos. It is by the vocalization (or writing) of the Word that it was heeded into being, and therefore materialized. That is the simple understanding of the passage. However, far more intricate is scripture, and infinitely more intricate is the meaning of the text.

 

A ‘Word’ we know is to be something that is said, or written, and of a single form in meaning (that is, not a letter [vocal only], nor a sentence [a compilation of meanings])*. We also know a Word is possessive of a meaning that cannot be further deconstructed. For example, ‘I love.’ is a sentence. It is composed of two Words, which both bear distinct, atomized meanings. ‘I’, which means: ‘oneself’, and ‘love’, which means: ‘an affection’. We therefore conclude that The Word that God spake the Planes into creation, had to have bore a Meaning. This is to say the Divine Plan was embedded in the very weaving of creation itself. There is no existence without His inscribed Purpose.

 

In addition, it is the opinion of the wise sages that ‘His Word’ refers to God’s speaking the world into being. That is allegorical to the manner a man might speak; how negligent, effortless and natural it is to one. The creation of the entire cosmos is therefore equatable to a single word muttered. This allegory finds an added meaning in relation to the ‘breath’ of God when related to the creation of the Immortals, the First Man and Woman and the beasts of the earth (to be expanded upon later).

 

It is written, also, that the skies were nearest to Him. “And that which was nearest [to the Lord] became the Skies,” (Gospel 1:4) Evidently, due to the truism expanded upon in the previous section, this is meant figuratively. God is as present in the Skies as He is in the material world as He is in the void. We glean from this, therefore, only the literary meaning of the distancing. That is, that the skies are to be sought as an ideal; by living virtuously; and that it was a place of immaculate goodness.

 

* It is important to note that in multiple cultures, a word can in itself be a sentence. In addition, as is true in Common or Flexio (and the language of creation), a letter can be in itself a word. Although a letter’s meaning contains substantial profoundness, especially in relation to the structuring of the alphabet and the creation of the world, this subject will not be touched upon in this dissertation (for more refer to the wise sages of the fraternity).

 

Throughout Scirpture, only two of the skies are numbered and detailed. The Seventh Sky is the Throne of God while the Sixth Sky is where the first pair and the Exalted and their wives reside. We learn from Scripture, also, that the Immortals were given permittence in the skies. Other than the seventh and sixth skies, we learn nothing of the other skies, besides the existence of five of them (based on the numbering of the Seventh and highest). By merit of the Sacred Tradition of the Church, however, we learn the designations of the other five. It is the belief of several of the sages, aswell, that the recognition of sainthood, honoured upon notably heroic servants of the Lord, is not restricted solely to those the Church has identified as such. A saint, by some definitions, is any descendant who resides in the skies (and has therefore achieved salvation). The duty of the Church, and the caution with which canonization is considered, is to simply ensure beyond doubt the veracity of the person’s presence in heaven. We are so thoroughly blessed by the Love of God, in fact, that the kin of Horen possess manifold thousands of saints, who are simply unnamed in the living world, but who bask in the light of the Skies regardless of their earthly veneration or memory.

 

The World and the Void, in their cosmological regards; the creation of the physical world, the language of creation, natural hierarchies, animaliia, the laws of nature and science, aswell as the moral standing of the void, voidal potential, the void in the salvific plan, voidal sin and chaos, shall be expanded upon in the next publication of ON COSMOLOGY AND GENESIS.

 

The subjects of the Creation of the Immortals aswell as the Heavenly Rebellion, or specifically; great and greater souls, free will, sin and virtue, the salvific plan and the nature of evil, qualities of aengudaemonica and the qualities of the accursed one, too, shall be expanded upon in detail in the next publication of ON COSMOLOGY AND GENESIS.

 

We learn in this chapter:

- The universe is structured by meaning.

- The Seven Skies and the Throne of God, in particular, are the ideal of virtue.



 

The First Man and Woman

Following the rebellion of the Fallen One (whose name is accursed), it is told that the plan of God was interrupted. To this end, He had wrought into creation, in addition to the existence of the Immortals, the First Man and Woman;

 

“So the Lord made two bodies of earth, and gave them blood and breath, and the light of wisdom.” (Gospel 1:28)

 

The First Pair were fashioned in body of earth. We can assume by this that the first pair were indeed created in the plane of the World (for we are otherwise not drawn to mention of their creation on terra). Our world is earth, or terra, and by this disposition it is evident that the first pair (and therefore their descendants) would be linked, in their bodily form only, to the earth. It is the only shackle that would otherwise bind what we know as ‘descendant souls’ to earth, in lieu of reunion with the Lord. 

 

The pair had lived in perfect obedience to the Lord, and the Lord was pleased with this. We may presume that the plan of God was, since the conception of the Immortals, a total obedience to Him. It is also why the sin of the fallen one was chiefly disobedience, and why the virtue of the first pair had redeemed the plan anew. (Gospel 1:29-30)

 

The first pair are also gifted blood and breath, and the light of wisdom. Blood and breath are the two rudimentary necessities of sustenance for organic life. In other words, the necessity of nutrition, digestion and good health, aswell as the respiratory consumption of air. For the ‘light of wisdom’ is a thing absorbed, like the light of a candle is absorbed by a dim surface, the light of wisdom can only be absorbed if it can be understood. We therefore know that the light of wisdom is in other words, the capacity for reason, or rationalism. In its basic iteration, it is the analysis in the abstract of perception in the physical. In the study of these three profound things; blood, breath and wisdom, which every descendant possesses and can not be sustained without, we find a meticulous interaction of dependence of each in the other. These are indeed the components of life, and we find in them a great sacredness; within them permeate the Blessing of the Lord. As we cannot live without Him, we cannot live without His Blessings in us. 

 

Blood, which depends on consumption and without which movement is impossible, is dependent on breath. Breath, in turn, cannot vitalize the body without the circulation of blood. Both rely in their entirety on the capacity for rationality. The logic is; Love and obedience to the Lord. The means; to perform the action of eating, and drinking, and breathing (the satisfaction of the blood and the breath). 

 

Hear now! would yell again, contrarians and imbeciles, who love to compare Man to animal, and would sooner entreat their pet all the blessings of the world before loving their own kin. What of instinct? For instinct is surely the propagator of blood and breath, for even a mouse can eat and breath, and a mouse certainly has not the light of wisdom among its blessings.

But yes, I say! A mouse absorbs the light of wisdom! Its instinct is essentially a product of reason! It is by necessity so. If a mouse was completely without any trace of reason, it would certainly cease to breath and to eat, because it is purposeless, and would perish. Whether the mouse is privy to the fact or not that what we know as ‘bestial instinct’ is indeed a function of reason, is irrelevant. A mouse needs not to know how to think in order to survive. Its survival, its purpose, is to populate the earth according to God’s plan. The equation, again, follows: To follow God’s plan, the mouse must survive (intrinsic logic, unknown by the mouse, but functional to it). In order to survive, the mouse must eat and breath (instinct, satisfying blood and breath). The very same trinity of interdependence of systems is present in all organic life, from animalia to Mankind. It is undeniable. The variance of degree of this equation in its relation to God’s Plan are what draws the difference in scale of the complexities of descendant souls and inferior souls. God created the First Pair with a refined mind, and a greater soul, and the mouse without, for that fulfilled His Plan. It is why, too, the blessing of the light of wisdom is numebred last out of the three. In the hierarchy of sustenance, a creature might indeed survive with only blood and breath, and only a minimal, yet necessary, light of wisdom (as do the beasts of the earth).

 

We learn in this chapter:

- The First Pair are created of the earth, with the function of breath, blood and the light of wisdom.

- The body, created of the earth, is the prison of the soul, and restrains it to the worldly plane.

- Breath, blood and the light of wisdom are innately good things, as is the body.

- Rationalism is the light of wisdom and a function of the soul.

- Instinct is an effect of an inbuild rationalism, whether sentient or not, rather than the body.

 

The Self and the Primeval Virtue

We read, too, that the first man and woman spoke no language, bore no name and became God’s favored creations.  What could the pair have called eachother, then, and to what effect does the absence of their names pertain to morality? We can understand why the first pair required no names. The sum of their relationship, until the bearing of the four sons, was: You, Me, and God. The absence of names, and even a language, points to the meekness of their ego, and simultaneously the unboundedness of their perception. Language constrains thought, by definition. We can only presume what profound ideas we can only grasp at in Common, or even Flexio, when compared with the freedom of pure thought the first pair basked in. We may in fact reason from this that the most blessed state of man is lack of ego, the very first Primeval Virtue. To forfeit in absoluteness their self, and internalize in all aspects of life to complete service to the Lord and to kin. This primordial virtue of an unabated, natural humility; the lack of self; satisfied God’s Plan (Gospel 1:30).

 

We learn in this chapter:

- The Plan of God is total obedience to Him.

- Total obedience to God means forgoing of the self.

 

The Self and the Primeval Sin

 

“And they remained faithful to their Creator, and did as He bid.  

And they knew each other, bearing four sons.” (Gospel 1:32-33)

 

The first pair lived and prospered and bore the four brothers, Malin, Urguan, Krug and H’oren. God, then, called the first pair to the sixth sky, to reside beside him; the first man obliged in wholeness, and rose. The first woman, however, hesitated. She loved her four sons more than she loved God. What has changed?

 

There was now, in the world, a language, and names. There was no longer You, me and God. The ego has taken possession of the first woman; and in her love of her children above the command of the Lord, she erred gravely. 

 

So the Lord was wroth, and uncovered the imperfections 

of the Sons, so that she would know her folly.”

 (Gospel 1:45)

 

The woman in her misplaced priority on man over God enacted the First Sin of Mankind. It was, in fact, the opposite of her virtue, that of primeval humility. In turn, so she would know her folly, God had ‘uncovered the imperfections of the Sons’. God had shown the mother that the sons, too, fell short of God, and she repented, and was risen to the sixth sky. The Primeval Sin is the inherited sin of all descendantkind. The usurpation of the ego, in face of God, and ultimately; the inclination to sinfulness. Now that the world was myriad, too were myriad the temptations, and total virtue was no longer the state of things as it had been with the pair and God alone. The vision of God had, since the sin of the first woman and the uncovering of the imperfections, been distorted, as self interest gave way to sin, which is effrontery to God. It is disobedience. We know all too well the subsequent sins of the four sons, and their progeny. The inheritance of sins bears precedence and finds its catalyst in the sin of the first woman. The sin of Malin, of Urguan, Krug and Horen, and their tribes, and their own descendants, has been without end. We know it intimately today for manifold are our sins. Mortality, temptation and ignorance all lend to our imperfection. We are wrought of sin! Sorry and wicked is our state as descendants! Fallen is the standing of the world!

 

We learn in this chapter:

- The root of sin is the self.

- The capacity for sin is inherited from the first woman.

- Mankind, as a result, is fallen.

 

Descendantkind and Inherited Sin

Woe to us! The world is fallen. The state of man is in disrepair. We shall forever fall short of God, and foreve shall besmirch His Plan. What, then, can we do? Our souls are His property, for He has created them, and within us exists a Holiness unmatched in the universe. Within our souls too, since the uncovering of imperfections, unfolds a timeless battle. Our inherited selfishness and our desires invade the Godly state of our precondition. The presence of a desirous ego is in itself condition for loss! and we have been losing since conception, for the natural disposition of things is as with the first pair, with their total obedience to God. Be not mistaken. Hear now! would yell many a worshipper-of-reason and dilettante sophist. The conflict-in-spirit you speak of is not wrought in the soul! It is wrought between soul and body. Body versus spirit, material versus incorporeal. Temptations of the flesh are that, of the flesh, they claim. Wrong!

 

The state of the body and the functions which we spoke of (its composition of earth, the blessing of blood and breath) are by themselves completely neutral, if not goodly things. For indeed without vitalities of flesh, man can not work the Lord, for he would die. The functions of the body incur no desire of themselves. Hear so: the body is subservient to the mind! It is the light of wisdom that lords over the actions of the body. In turn, however, the mind is slave to the spirit. How, then, do passions manifest? The war wrought in the soul! The soul dictates whether sin is enacted or not. The body is not at fault. Let me ask: is a wolf wrong to hunt a rabbit? No. Chiefly, but besides the point, is that a wolf does not possess a soul of moral competence and is therefore incapable of sin. Secondly, however, since a wolf does possess a soul, it is because it is the nature of the wolf to hunt. The instinct to hunt, an instrument of its mind, is at command of its soul. And because a wolf’s soul is uncorrupted like man, it is bid to hunt and therefore is not at wrong. The body of the wolf is the means, while the soul of the wolf is the directive. So it is with the soul of Man. The first man had no such battle in his soul; he was a creation of complete obedience to the Lord and to the function of his Godly soul. The mother however, sinned, and invited into her soul and the souls of her sons and their sons after them a condition of detachment from total obedience.

 

We learn in this chapter:

- A soul in its created state is Holy, and a fragment of God.

- A soul commands the mind, which commands the body.

- A descendant soul is corrupted by the ego.

- The fault of sin lies with a corrupted soul, not with the body, which is only an instrument to live.

 

Salvation

We are not without remedy, however, to this grave and cosmological ailment of our souls. God is with unlimited love for His Creation. He has not birthed us to suffer unduly. His is Justice. For our sins; we may repent. Faithful worshippers of the Lord ought dedicate their lives in entirety to the pursuit of personal justice, and the penitence of this sorrowful state. By the triumph of virtue over sin, and the abolishment of the desires of the self, might we be reunited with the Lord, and repent the sin of our inheritance. Our state shall be forever short of him, but we may not be short of the first man, nor the first woman either! For she was, after God’s rebuke, forgiven and risen to the sixth sky, just as the first man. Total Obedience, Love for the Lord, and the eradication of sin from the heart is man’s perfection. Man must be ready to tread in hell if it is in work of the Lord. May we be barely as worthy as the First Man!

 

In the study of Scripture, the Godly soul overwhelms the disposition to sin.

In the practice of Virtue, the Godly soul overwhelms the disposition to sin.

In the humility of prayer, the Godly soul overwhelms the disposition to sin.

In the presence of the Holy Tabernacle, the Godly soul overwhelms the disposition to sin.

In martyrdom for the Faith, the Godly soul overwhelms the disposition to sin.

 

Seek these and not your own desire! Work these, in your lives, and we shall be verily nearer to the Lord, and mending the severed link, and become worthy of His Salvation.

A certain Dark Elven man sifted through piles of newly-released volumes on his way through the busy markets of Numendil. Between the charming illustration of the author, his choice of language, and the mention of Lemon Hill -- a place which now evoked a bristling anger -- he knew exactly whom wrote this and exactly which book he'd be indulging in this evening. "...I'm glad he found our conversation so...inspiring."

 

Later, he would set aside bawdier readings in favor of Elim Temmeck's work, and while his crimson-red eyes traced the written word -- his mind was elsewhere, still livid over what was said about the late Draryn Telthaas. "Diabolist." he recalled aloud from an earlier conversation with the priest, nearly spitting on the word, uninhibited by one too many glasses of a vintage Carrion red. "It is no wonder that such a panicked, fearful man finds solace in these simplistic beliefs. How much more frightening the world must be, without that GOD whom stamps out the diabolist bogeyman..?" and the Elf shook his head bitterly. Nevertheless, he found himself oddly drawn to the work, and continued sleeplessly reading into the early hours of the morning.
