Tides Within (PK)

Ophelia stood at the edge of the shore, her bare feet sinking slightly into the cool, damp sand as the waves lapped over her toes. The ocean stretched endlessly before her, a mosaic of shifting blues, its salty breeze threading through her hair. She closed her eyes, her eyelids feeling heavy, and tilted her face to the sun, letting its warmth seep into her skin as the rhythmic roar of the waves filled her ears. For a moment, the world seemed to pause, no worries, no pain, just the infinite horizon and the steady heartbeat of the sea. She breathed deeply, despite how laboured it was, tasting the salt in the air, and felt, perhaps for the first time in weeks, utterly alive. For in truth, she had been battling this illness for far too long, this change of scenery was exactly what she needed. Not to heal, but to find peace in her situation, to finally accept it all with a heart so full.

As she turned away from the horizon, she saw him standing a few steps behind her, his figure framed by the golden glow of the sinking sun. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets, but the soft curve of his smile gave him away. His eyes, warm and steady, met hers, and for a moment, the sound of the waves faded into the background. She felt a quiet gratitude swell in her chest, an unspoken connection in the space between them, as if the ocean’s vastness mirrored the depth of all they had shared. He didn’t need to say anything; his presence was enough, grounding her in the moment like the earth beneath her feet. She turned around, her feet sinking into the sand as she walked over towards August, reaching out to take his hand. With not a word spoken between them they made their way over to the small cabin, the very cabin they’ve run to, to find such serenity, peace.

They stepped into the cabin, the cool, shadowed interior a stark contrast to the warm glow of the beach. She paused just inside the door, gripping the edge of the weathered table for balance. A wave of dizziness washed over her, stronger this time, and before she could call his name, her legs gave way beneath her. He was there in an instant, catching her before she hit the floor, his arms strong but trembling as he cradled her fragile frame. Her breaths came shallow and rapid, her face pale, and she clung to his shirt as if anchoring herself to the world. “I’m here,” he whispered, his voice steady despite the panic in his eyes. He carried her to the worn couch, his hands brushing the hair from her damp forehead, as outside, the ocean roared on, indifferent to the storm brewing in their quiet refuge.

The room was quiet, save for the soft crackle of the fire and the rhythmic crash of waves outside the cabin, a distant echo of life’s ebb and flow. She lay in his arms, her body frail but her spirit luminous, her breath becoming slower now, each one a bittersweet farewell. His hand rested gently on her cheek, his thumb brushing away the tears that silently fell, though his own eyes glistened. She looked up at him, a faint smile playing on her lips, and in her gaze was everything, gratitude, love, and a quiet peace. “I love you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, but he heard her as if her words were carved into his heart. And then, with a final, soft exhale, she stilled, her face serene as if she had simply drifted into the embrace of the sea she loved so much. He held her close, his own heart breaking yet full, knowing her pain had ended, and that in her last moments, she was surrounded by the one she loved most.

"You were always kind to me, Aunt Ophelia. Few were as hospitable, and none bore a library as comprehensive as you..." John Casimir murmured upon receiving the news, the Temesch matriarch's passing provoking great sorrow. "Please, rest easy. May we meet again in due time."

The depths of San Adriano were harrowingly silent as the passing has come to bear. There was no want of happiness, no sight of it for there was no happiness in a moment such as this one. The Count, No, her husband had been present during her final few minutes and he had wished such would come to bear in no other way. Only recently were matters of the kingdom were improving and now the personal affairs of the count grew to crumble.

August cared little for all else at a time like this, never did they imagine that he would’ve outlived her and yet it came to pass, tears streamed down the face of the man for the first time in years, never once did he show such emotions during their married life yet finally he did. For days there was nothing but silence. Yet he had made a promise before her very passing and that he promised to honour, returning to his duties despite his time of mourning.

Despite this, a candle was lit in the prayer room of San Adriano every passing night.
