[!] Early this winter morning in the quiet city of Vjardengrad, smoke began to curl above the tall, bleak walls which surround Norland’s capital. Before its people stirred to greet the rising sun, the chill of the night still clung in the air and a light began to illuminate the already dawning sky. A fiery heat above the city accompanied this growing light and soon the awakened citizens would be met with a haunting sight.

Just as the sun bled over the horizon, so too did flames burst from within the Rurikkid palace halls. From high atop the city’s walls, citizens would be able to see the roaring fire as it engulfed the structure. Smoke filled the air until the sun’s light was snuffed out, replaced only with the gleam of the fire above. Contained by the stone walls meant to protect from intruders, the flames failed to spread to the homes of Norland’s citizens.

Springing embers threatened to consume the city, but soon did valiant Norlanders and Outlanders climb the inner walls and quench the flames. Moving magical water basins and mundane buckets of water were enough to extinguish all traces of the fire. No casualties were sustained and all who went up to fight the flames were seen returning, save for a lost helmet.

The palace now stands as a shell of its former self. Its walls cracked and blackened from the heat of the flames and its ceiling caving in. In time, it will be restored, but what remains missing can never be replaced. Only the remnants can be salvaged. Only the remnants remain.

Váli found himself doing the last thing he had ever pictured himself doing. Stepping back through the door nestled in the back of the tax office, he ascends the stairs, bringing himself to a room in the back corner. He drops his bags on the floor as he pushes open the door. Sure, it was temporary, but the circumstance left him shaken to his core. But that does not change the reality present to him.

Váli Freysson Ruric was coming home.

In the damp darkness of the norlandic sewers a red robed monk sat at a grinding wheel, sharpening an executioner axe. One hand crafted for a very specific purpose. Ferrum forged and wrought from the nearby mines for the blade. Wood from the trees in the forests cut and shaped to a handle. And a single name carved upon the grip. Uniquely made to make the receiver feel the weight of their sins.

Farian Malto-Gylldene questioned the lack of appearance of Sera, but his concerns also laid with the palace which he commanded his surroundings to douse. His lungs had filled with smoke, his mind filled with questions, and his eyes welled with tears, for all seemed to be going to ruins around him.

Watching from somewhere secluded, a bard shakes his head, having heard what can only spoken through the grapevine.

"So she has regressed. I must pen Váli..."
