The First Butterflies

Somewhere on the surface of Aevos…

Sergey was recovering quickly from the battle of Saint Daniel’s Crossing with him actually resting. Though with resting came restlessness. A desire to walk outside the city walls and into Haense’s quiet countryside. Of course he wouldn’t actually be walking out here by himself with his current injuries healing. No, Reinhard and Malna would be furious with him for taking a risk like that. That’s why he opted to go with a friend. Thorim had visited him a few hours prior and after some conversation the pair agreed to take a walk to Numendil and back to curb Sergey’s need for fresh air out of Haense. Sure they ran into that band of orcs and exchanged some heated words but no battle came of it. Thankfully. The two brotherhood of Saint Karl members would keep pace with each other as they walk, more or less the orc slowing his pace for Sergey who stubbornly limped along. He admired the human spirit to keep moving forward despite the difficulties.

- Just after the orc band encounter -

Sergey Othaman takes a deep breath as to not lose his shit before letting out a heavy sigh. “…Don't listen to what they say da? There's nothing wrong with vy.” The nothing wrong being the orcs' referral to Thorim being a human plaything since he lived in Haense rather than amongst his own kind.

Thorim ignored the rocks they were pelted with when the orc band rode off. He kept his eyes trained on the masked orc that held Sergey’s journal in its grasp. He would remember that face… “I now have new prey to hunt.”

Sergey Othaman chides, “Don't go after him… he works with Mitch and they have large numbers. Ea do not want the BSK to rally over a stupid journal.” Or rather someone of the brotherhood being taken over a journal. Goddan that would be embarrassing.

Thorim turns his attention to Seregy, addressing the man's previous comment. “No. They are right. My tribe does not follow that path not anymore…we…learned not to rely on the curse.”

Sergey Othaman falls silent, studying the orc's facial expression before asking.  “. . .Are vy okay with that? Being seen as an outcast?” He would ask, beginning to walk again with Thorim.

Thorim nods, trotting alongside Sergey.  “I am fine. And who said I was getting our brothers and sisters involved? It is expected to find more numbers then I alone can fight; they would not allow themselves to be bested by a traitor they see my tribe as.” Thorim frowns in thought before inquiring, “Are you okay though?”

The Othaman nods. “Da..Just…irritated.” He growls. “Ea guess it's an underlying shame of facing a foe again and being able to do nothing about it.” He recalled the humiliation of Jed trying to drag him up that muddy hill to the bridge to be searched. Even thinking about it made him bristle.

A subtle grin forms on the orcs face, one of malice. “Don't worry. I'll get that book back. Once I'm done with my hunt.”

Sergey, “Ea would keep telling vy to leave it but Ea think vy're going to ignore me da?”

Thorim, “That book is important to you is it not?” Thorim gives Sergey a curious look as he sets certain thoughts aside for a later time.

Sergey Othaman replies, stepping up on a step in the road. “The brooch is more so than the journal. The journal more or less just has personal information Ea don't want floating around.” His unicorn brooch. Damn Mitch for taking it. It was invaluable to him, even if it was a silly trinket. It had sentimental value more than anything else.

“Then the brooch is worth going after to return to you.” Thorim replies promptly.

Sergey Othaman sighs. “Ea..Guess. Mitch himself took it. Ea don't want vy going after him alone. He is the type of person who needs two men taking him on, at least”

Thorim hummed in thought as he stroked his small beard. He would not be so easily swayed. “Hmmm now that sounds like a good battle to me.”

Sergey Othaman shook his head, batting a hand at Thorim as they walked. “Vy are stubborn.”

Thorim lets out a hearty laugh,  having to stop to rest his hands on his knees at the remark. ““Hahahaha. What orc isn't?”

Sergey Othaman aims a poignant finger at Thorim. “Fair.” He would give Thorim that. It was hitting the nail on the head.

Thorim catches his breath, clutching his gut as his laughter subsides before casting a glance to Sergey. “You still have yet to answer my question though.”

Sergey, “Da which one?”

A form of mischief washes over Thorim’s face. “What do you desire?” His old warm smile returned once his laughter had passed. “Must be something good if it makes you so uuuh fizzy.”

Fizzy,” Sergey repeated, walking ahead. “Ea think Ea desire what anyone goes after. A decent life, a fulfilled one with someone to stand at their side.”

Thorim took a moment to sort out his own thoughts. Having something like that would be nice… Throwing caution to the wind, Thorim made a gamble. He buried his personal fears with the question. “Got room for a traitorous orc at that side?”

Sergey Othaman stops in his tracks. The human casts a glance over his shoulder at Thorim, blinking in surprise. “…E..Ea suppose….If…. Vy can handle a familial disappointment prone to injury.” Sergey swallows, his face growing hot. “…Are vy jesting?”

Thorim closed the distance between the pair. “You fight without fear. You stand your ground when human instincts say run.” The orc takes a step forward, looking down at Sergey. “If you see a disappointment, point him out to me.” Thorim was close enough to reach him, “For I see none.” The taller brotherhood member leaned down, resting his lips against Sergey’s forehead. “Or I should say you fight through fear. That is nothing to be disappointed about.”

“!” Sergey freezes like a deer caught in the torch light. He was not expecting that. The Haensei man's blue amaii eye flicks up, looking at Thorim intensely as if analyzing the orc. “. . .” Sergey wraps his arms around Thorim, pulling him into a hug.

Thorim moved an arm over the human's back to embrace him with a hug of his own. Casting his gaze downward, he mutters, “You think I jest?”

“…Shut it.” Sergey grumbles, his face red. He didn't know what else to say- what was he to say? Celebrate that he found someone? That he wasn't alone like he thought he would be?

**** it

Sergey bites the 'bullet' and musters the courage to peck Thorim on the chin.

Thorim craned his head downward, a widened smile on his face. A chuckle rumbles in the orcs throat as similar thoughts swam in his head. Teasing the shorter man a little, he moved a hand down, gently taking Sergey by his chin. Bringing his face to Sergey’s, the pair left a tender kiss.

Was this what young love was? A spark? Butterflies in your gut as your blood warmed your face, heart pounding against your chest? Or was it the calming sensation of being cared for after a kiss ended? Sergey blinked a few times after the pair shared a kiss, appearing stunned.

Thorim grinned, chuckling as he stared in amazement at the stunned individual. “Come back down now Sergey. You can breathe.”

Sergey Othaman nods and takes a deep breath, clearing his throat. His face remained flushed as he pulled at the collar of his shirt and jacket. “Da…Ea am good. Good. Da. Very good.” He pauses before speaking again. “We should..Go back to Haense.”

Thorim delivers a smug look. “No fried faceplate?” He laughs in jest as he picks up Sergey into his arms, this time intent on carrying him the whole way back.

Of course it wouldn’t be unlike Sergey Othaman to argue at first but being how stubborn Thorim was, he gave up about 1/4 of the way back, begrudgingly accepting the transport.

This was an extremely fun re-write as Sergey rarely gets nice things, so it was a bit cathartic haha. I hope you find this as sweet as I do.
