The house was silent, the children away with their cousins, whilst Kaba sat alone at her desk. A quill rested in her hand, yet she could not bring it to move. She wore her mourning clothes once more, the same that had seemed to have been returned to her closet for only a brief time before returning to her. Long did she sit in stillness, struggling to grasp the words that might give shape to her grief. At last, with a heavy sigh, she set quill to parchment and began to write:

To our beloved friends and kin,

 

It is with a most grievous heart that I must share tidings of sorrow. My eldest daughter, Sophie, was taken from us earlier this month. Whilst she and her twin, Leo, were out riding, they were beset by a fearsome storm. The rain fell without cease, thunder shook the heavens, and in the confusion Sophie’s horse was spooked. Too near to the edge of the mountain path they strayed, and the sodden ground gave way beneath her. Though Leo rushed to her side, it was already too late.

 

Sophie was a bright and strong-willed soul, ever eager to learn. Her dearest wish was to one day serve as a professor within the Prince’s Institute, and she carried with her the spark of one who would have lit the minds of many. She shall be missed beyond measure by all who knew and loved her.

 

For reasons including our second youngest away at a nunnery we as a family, have resolved to hold a private funeral attended only by our closest kin. Sophie will be laid to rest beside her father, whom she so dearly admired, in the quiet cemetery beyond Alba.
