Origins

The namesake of Adria, Adrian de Sarkozy, the Patron Saint of Statesmen, was renowned for his long service as Chancellor of the White Rose. For this, he was awarded the now-longstanding Sarkozy titles of Norfolk and Aldersberg. Adria was eventually founded in 1487 by the Houses Vladov and the de Sarkozy.

The Duchy’s early population consisted mostly of Raevir. Yet, over the centuries, many other cultural groups have integrated and intermingled into the Duchy to a varying degree, which has slowly developed the once Raevir-State into an entity of its own right.  Therefore, modern Adrians simply call themselves just that: Adrian.

Dumacracy

Duma is an old Raevir term, vaguely describing a parliament. This idea of an assembly holding most power within the state is a guiding principle within Adria. Every citizen who has come of age may join these assemblies as well as cast a vote on matters that range from trivial to the most important. Even the Duke is selected similarly; however, not all citizens may vote here, and this is typically restricted to those of higher standing, such as the noble houses, patricians, guild masters, or the priesthood.

Language

Adrians, due to the long influence of different cultures, have mostly adopted the common tongue as their own, with only a few outside influences remaining, due to the many peoples having mixed.

While a few terms such as "Goodgreet" or "Duma" have persisted from their Raevir roots, they have long come to terms with simplicity, even mocking the heavy accent of Peoples such as the Haensers.

Religion

High Pontiff Harrentzedek, known as Callahan, was a reformer of the Temple of the True Faith who had spent much of his time in Adria, especially during the time of Duke Heinrik Sarkozic. Because of this, the Adrians have always had a close connection to the reformed Temple, despite their ancestral Carrion ties, which would lead one to expect otherwise.

As such, nearly all Adrians are Faithful of the Church of the True Faith.

Rural Lifestyle

Farmlands and an open landscape have been crucial to the Adrian identity for centuries. It has been a long time since a truly fortified Adrian town was seen, the people preferring open and welcoming settlements instead–the one exception being the City of Ves, in the Year 1705 F.A. Yet even this is entirely unthinkable to the modern Adrian of Beograd.

The Adrians praise their own Corn, Wheat, Turnips, Sunflower Seeds, and Carrots above all foreign products, just as their Apple and Lemon Orchards.

Fashion

Adrian fashion is diverse, but always quite colorful. Extravagant large hats, as well as well-groomed facial hair and especially mustaches, are popular among men, while women wear their hair often braided in various ways. Strangely enough, many men in Adria are bald and while this is often not voluntary, it has become an expression of raw power under Duke Zygmunt I Euler.

Wedding Celebrations

In the Duchy of Adria, the people oft find themselves permitted a certain degree of individuality for important celebrations.

And what celebration could be more important than the meeting of two star-crossed hearts who seek to be entwined 'til the end of their lives? As such, Adrians expect both the groom and the bride to inject a significant amount of personality into their wedding ceremony. Oftentimes, one is charged with procuring or creating the alcohol that shall be served, while the other is charged with the ever-important dessert.

It is not even particularly important that either is of the highest quality, as the memory of a bad meal shared with laughs is more valuable than any one cake. However, some families are known to have extremely high expectations, and disappointing them might lead to an objection right before the vows!

Prominent Houses

Founded by Ulrich Euler in the original Empire of Man, House Euler finds its origins as simple Aduno-Waldense merchants of Carolustadt. Towards the end of the war with the September Prince, he relocated to the capital of Adria, Belvitz, where his family’s long service to the Duchy began, culminating in the election of Stefan Euler as Duke in 201 S.A. During the rule of Duke Zygmunt Euler, the House has been the leading force behind Adria’s restoration to greatness on the continent of Azuras.

In the traditional Wickstory, the first Wick was one of the thousand within Horen’s army. Known as ‘VIC’, he was remembered for his wit and cunning, and he fought in several battles against the army of ork that faced Man. He wed a woman and fathered a single child, one that he named ‘VVIC’. They have only recently, as of 240 S.A., settled in Adria, but were a prominent House in various nations over the centuries, with a famous member being the Pontiff Everard V.

Since Adria's founding, the ancient House of Sarkozic has stood among its people as one of the founding houses of Adria. Their line has produced many Adrian Dukes, many of whom played a grand role in shaping the history of man. In recent history, one such was Duke Heinrik Sarkozic, who gathered the remnants of Adria on the continent of Almaris and led the struggle for independence against the Kingdom of Aaun, which subsequently brought the League of Veletz into existence.

Further ignoble families residing in Adria include the Fountaine, Vladov, de Ruyter, and a few once-Celian Elves, such as the Houses Amethil and Ibarellan, who have since integrated into the wider Adrian society.

Prominent Figures

There have been many legendary Adrian men and women over the course of the more than five centuries Adria has existed. Here, I shall list a few that seem especially interesting. Many of them were Dukes of Adria, some of them poets or patricians. And others, simple men who rose to be great leaders in the course of their lives.

Ratibor 'the Red'

Prosperous leader of late Belvitz-Era Adria, known for his exciting Dumas and wild antics, including a haphazard and disastrous war against Courland that wiser Adrians know better than to recall.

Hughes 'the Headless'

A charming hero-duke of the Brelus-Era of Adria, who succeeded Franz Vladov and brought Adria to such great heights that their success stirred opposition from the de Savoies, who soon decapitated a captured Hughes and effectively the whole city with him.

Timeo de la Baltas

Known to Adrians as the most famous bard in all descendant history, Timeo de la Baltas is celebrated by the Adrian folk, to whom he was a neighbor, friend, entertainer, and- after becoming Count of Auvergne - a Lord.

Duke Heinrik ‘the Victor’

Considered the most controversial figure of his time, Heinrik Sarkozic has become a folk hero to the Adrian Diaspora, especially in the ruling houses of Euler and Sarkozic, who deem him wrongfully prosecuted and a valiant, selfless hero.

The Mad Duke

By blood and cunning, Josef 'the Red' Sarkozic seized political dominance of Belvitz-Era Adria, slaughtering his opponents who sought to supplant Sarkozic control.

Thus, he gained his infamy and the title “The Mad Duke.”

Duke Stefan Euler

Folk legend says that Stefan 'the Turtle Sage' saved Heinrik Otto's life, and was rewarded by the prophetic monk Callahan to drink from the Holy Grail of Saint Lucien, attesting to Stefan's famous youthful energy. A stalwart supporter of the Sarkozic restorers, his family was rewarded with support for ducal claims.

“I believe they’ve confused Lucien with Adrian. Guess they want to be more like Savoyards.” Commented a Savoyard from the hills, joking about the rivalry between the two peoples.

Somewhere in Adria both an Amethil and Ibarellan elven woman was watching over her child play within the vast cornfield of the Duchy. Despite the lack of walls, the open town was deemed safe enough for the duo, both doning braided hair of light shades, blending in with the autumnal flora of the region.

On the other side of the lake and river, a rather old Regina Bluecrest was fishing with Konstanze-Nauríel Euler. She were telling her stories of youth and how she watched Adria evolve for an entire century, a living relic from the era of Veletz. She also recalled nominating her trusted horse Cupcake for the Dumacratic elections, truly growing unstable in what is likely her last years.

"Euler Euler Euler" murmured one lost Severin Euler as he made his way through a dense forest somewhere on Azuras, thinking back to Adria, his home, to lend him resolve.
