By the Seal of Alaric Grimgold, First Admiral of the Grand Kingdom,

 

Hear me now, all citizens of the Grand Kingdom, and heed these words with the gravity they are given.

 

The Empire has pressed us to the very walls of our capital. The day has come when stone alone cannot hold, and steel alone cannot save. Therefore, by my command and for the preservation of our people, all who are not fit to stand in the defense of the city are to evacuate at once and make for the docks without delay.

 

Bring your children, your elders, and such goods as may be carried in haste. Leave all else behind, for there is no room now for delay, and no honor in needless death. The ships of the fleet shall receive you, and by their strength you shall be borne away to the sea, where the Grand Kingdom’s bloodline and memory may yet endure.

 

Let it also be known: all books, all records, all relics of the Kingdom, all that bears the history of our people and the weight of our fathers, are to be gathered and loaded aboard the cruisers. The Obsidian Throne itself shall be taken, for while stone may fall, the right to rule shall not be surrendered to the flame.

The docks shall be kept open and ordered. The fleet shall depart before the battle is joined, so that what little remains of our kingdom may be preserved from the ruin that threatens it.

 

And know this above all, one vessel shall remain at the harbor, provisioned and ready, to receive our soldiers should the city fall. Let no warrior think himself abandoned. If the walls break and the gates are lost, there shall yet be a path to the sea, and the chance to fight again beneath another sky.

 

Stand firm in your courage. Move with discipline. Preserve what can be preserved. The Grand Kingdom may be wounded, but it shall not be erased while even one of its children still carries its memory.

Dorin Starbreaker, one of Alaric’s captains, reads the posted missive, his gaze drifting over the city’s lackluster defenses.

 

“’Tis naught more than givin’ them the mountain…”

 

His eyes settle on the gates, frustration tightening his jaw.

 

"WE DUNNE EVEN 'AVE CITIZEN DOORS!"

 

Shaking his head, he turns to the remaining citizens of Urguan.

 

"ALL WHO DUNNE WISH TAH FALL UNDAH TEH EMPIRE ARE WELCOM MOUNG MAH SHIP!"
 

His gaze returns to the gates and the empty passages beyond as one of his men begins ushering citizens away. Dorin steadies himself, ready to captain the last boat for the soldiers who remain.
 

"GIVE EM HELL! AH'LL SEE YEH ALL AT TEH GATES AH KAZ'ADENTRUM!"

"NOVARK OZ URGUAN!"

Inquisitor Amyas remarked, still sharpening his blade for the siege.

"Cowards. You've made my decision for me. I'll slaughter the women and children left behind, too."

On receiving this missive in a far away place, a half-Dwed looks puzzled as he speaks to a reclusive friend. "Ah cannot say whout mah greater surprise is, dat tha Urguani folks are fleein', or dat Alaric Grimgold 'as somehow gotten back inta power!"

 

The missive is rolled up and added to a small collection of things in Folkvar's little dwelling. "When tha folk o' Hefrumm tried ta flee all t'ose years ago, t'eir reputation was tarnished, t'eir village all but burned, and t'eir lives put on tha line under tis Grand King's own cruel laws. Now he'd see all of tha Grand Kingdom flee from a war he 'elped begin? The lack of honor...tha shame, it knows no bounds! Ah was roight not ta go back when Ah heard bout dat fledgling Dwed encampment some time back. Least now Ah can live 'n die knowin' Ah had tha better heart of a Dwed than half o' Urguan's own fockin' military!"

 

The half-Dwed would spit out some frustration at the last of his bitter words before returning to his daily operations of foraging for the commune.
