Early Life

The Darkelf (Mali’ker) was born in the year 251 SA. His childhood was troubling, as his mother died during his birth and his father was an alcoholic, spending most of his time away from him. He had no siblings and no known cousins. The name given to him by his father was Lasarus. For most of his life, he went by either Sebastian or Cassius, though he used Lasarus (often heard as Lazaruz because of his French-ish accent) as an alias during the last few years of his life.

Later Life

During his short life, in both human and elven standards, he lived in many places. The first place he called home was a hole located in a shed next to the tavern in Alduun, but after living there and working his way up, he bought a house in the same city. During this time in Alduun, Cassius developed a severe hatred toward the empire and its vassals. The exact moment of his radicalization is hard to pinpoint, but he traveled to Cerulia during the time of Urguan, where he met people who shared his beliefs. The fate of those people is not known at this time. He was still living in Alduun when he bought his house in Cerulia. After living in Cerulia for about a year, Cassius had been radicalized to the point where he was ready to join the resistance. It was around this time that he would start his criminal life. He committed many robberies. Some of the most notable ones include a mugging in Adria, where he ran a man named Rudolf over with a horse and fought off two more before fleeing on his horse. He was later recognized by one of the people who had seen the mugging while he was in Alduun, but he was able to convince them it wasn't him who had done it. This would become a recurring thing.

After a few months of living in both Cerulia and Alduun, the largest crime at the time was committed: the arson of Amdir 3 in Alduun. The house was burned to a crisp, and when it was investigated, blood was found spattered all over. During his short months in captivity, he claimed that the arson was carried out to hide the evidence of the many bodies he had hidden there. This remains unclear to this day.

After this, he fled to Cerulia and made frequent visits to The Horde and the lands around. There, he ordered a small knife that he carried around for the next year. On one occasion, he entered Kurai-Kuni, in the city of Junmura, where, after being told that a poem he wrote to sell was bad, he attempted to kill a man named Bojangles Buckler, who had told him it was bad.  He then went to Alduun (he was not yet known as the arsonist at this time), where he was recognized by a Junmurian who had seen him die. But, like before, he managed to smooth-talk his way out of this, too. He would flee the city once more. After Cerulia fell, and later the capital city of Urguan, Cassius wandered the lands. He visited Alduun many times during this period, as well as the Esberian Hunter’s Guild, which sits in the forest by Belgrade in Adria. It was here that he was recognized by a man named Wyllm O’Riley, who later played a larger role in his capture and execution. Cassius managed to get out of the situation, but not for long.

On a later date, when he was once again in Alduun, he slipped up while talking to a fellow Ker and used the name Cassius instead of Lazaruz. Wyllm, who found him in the guild’s tavern, heard this slip-up, prompting him to question Cassius about his identity. Cassius then attempted to flee the gates, where he was eventually tackled and brought in for questioning once again. But, as before, he managed to convince some of the guards that he wasn't the arsonist and mugger from earlier. Therefore, with the jury split, he did not receive the death penalty. Instead, he was sentenced to pay a fine of 24 mina (the value of the house), then serve a year of community service in Alduun. After that, he would be banished from Idunia for five years, and if he showed up, he would be killed on sight. Cassius paid his fine and brought a guard named Willeon d'Artagnan down to the farms below Alduun to gather straw. While the guard wasn’t looking, Cassius pulled his blade on him, and after a long, hard duel, Cassius came out victorious, having smashed Willeon in the forehead with the pommel of his sword. He then robbed the unconscious guard and fled once again south. Willeon survived the injury thanks to Lothar Eliasevic, a local business owner and Guards Captain, who found him with a stroke of luck and brought him to Alduun. As of this writing, Willeon d’Artagnan is still around and can be found in and around Alduun, still serving as a guard.

The Weeks Leading Up to His Execution

After fleeing to Cerulia one last time, he contacted the people he knew from earlier. He then proceeded, by the cover of night, to flee to the desolate capital of the dwarfs. From there, he followed the eastern shore up to Caurost to once again communicate with his contacts. It was there he found out that he was being hunted by two parties led by Ser Îlmârion Callaghan. The names of the members of the party are as follows: Bronadron Callaghan, Wyllm O'Riley, Asad, Aled Glennmaer, Willeon d'Artagnan, Toren d'Artagnan, Julia Pachakutiq, and Cairos. From Caurost, through the Forest of Iryalen, into Illivira, he once again contacted his allies for the last time. After leaving Illivira, he turned his gaze west and rode through the geyser lands into the snowy lands. When he reached the small fishing village located in the center, he lit a fire in one of the houses before going into hiding. A few days later, the party of hunters reached the village. They searched through it, and Ser Îlmârion found him inside one of the houses. There was a quick exchange of hits and parries before he called for court and surrendered. His weapons and armor were returned to Willeon, from whom they had been taken, and they rode back to Alduun, where Cassius was thrown in jail to await the day of his execution.

The Day of the Execution

On the night leading to the 16th of The Amber Cold year 277, Cassius was taken out of the cell in which he had spent the past month being questioned about The Salvo, his murders, and other crimes. He was brought out to the courtyard to face his punishment. Ser Îlmârion stood as judge, and he was sentenced to death by firing squad for the following, by either confession or eyewitness accounts: five counts of murder, if not more; four counts of attempted murder; one count of fleeing the Guard; and one count of arson.

Below is a transcript of his last words:

Quote

So… this is how it ends, eh? You came to watch a monster die… but you do not even know what I have done.
They read the charges… many people… it is almost funny.
I have killed far more than that… men, women… those who begged… those who fought… all the same.
Vel’kra zharn. [Blood remembers]
Do you understand? Some of you do… and that makes it worse.
Ah… Willeon… you remember the duel, no? You fell… and you trusted me.
And it is only by my mercy that you still breathe.
People of the Empire… of Idunia… of Kurai Kuni…
You call me a criminal… You call me a beast…
But I fight for the last free world beyond your chains.
The Empire is evil… a throne built on blood and lies.
And yet… You kill me for it.

Good. Remember this moment.
They will call me a murderer… traitor… monster…

But in time… they will call me saint.
For thousands of years, they will speak my name.
Uhv vel’thir kazh. [My name will endure]
And… the Dark Lord, Dâhak Xârxes… he will come.

He will come, and you will fear him.
LONG LIVE URGUAN!
LONG LIVE THE SAINTS OF SALVO!

LONG LIVE THE HORDE!

DEATH TO THE EMPIRE!
DEATH TO HADRIAN, THE PIG ON THE THRONE OF BLOOD!

He was again gagged for the execution to take place. But he managed to fight the gag off and shout a few last words. Exact words were not noted down, but he died shouting death upon Emperor Hadrian and the Empire itself. He was killed by 2 arrows and 3 bolts to the chest, before he was taken outside the city, where his body was burned.

Sebastian Lasarus Cassius proclaimed himself ‘Saint Sebastian Lasarus Cassius I’ before he died. He died at the age of 26, being 6’5” and weighing approximately 170 lbs.

His ties to The Salvo and ‘The Dark Lord’ or ‘Dâhak Xârxes’ remain unclear to this day, as does the total count of murders.

Ser Îlmârion Callaghan had spent the better part of three months tracking, investigating, and eventually ordering the execution of Cassius.. It had been exhausting, nonstop work leading a small force of 150 men on a continent-wide manhunt for the fugitive, and at last, in the freezing tundras of the Witch Kingdom, they had found him to bring to justice in the Royal City of Aldunn.

The Day of his Execution drew near, investigation had yielded results, and those results had names they could follow up for future leads.. And as the hour of his Execution arrived, they announced with a resounding bell through the Streets of Aldunn that it was time.. A small force of seventy men took position on the executioner's line in the Barracks of the Host of Idunia, the banners nearby fluttering in the afternoon breeze as commands were given. "Ready, Set!"  would resound throughout the Courtyard, followed by the ultimate command of "Fire!" as many crossbows and bows sounded off in unison, striking Cassius true, ending his treacherous life upon Azuras.

Spoiler

Lothar you were a great sport for this entire investigation from beginning to end and provided at least ten hours of meaningful RP for the Host in the last 72 hours, thanks for making it a great short storyline for all involved!

somehow somewhere, a Salvian commander feels uneasy. Fell norther' winds blow in from Idunia, his horse startles and he shivers as he calms his mount. The Rider thinks long and hard about those intrepid guerillas doing their part behind enemy lines, and how he laments that he can do little to to aid their efforts, at least for now.

If he could, he would say this to that fellow unknown to him...

Spoiler

brave soldier, your efforts have not gone unnoticed and your sacrifice will be repaid tenfold against our common enemy.

Wyllm watched  from his spot next to Ilmarion, his right knuckles left a deep red from his final conversation with Cassius, as the man he hunted for three years was executed, he never wanted to see the elf dead, he advocated for a banishment, yet once he was given a light sentence he squandered the mercy shown him and this is where they had all wound up. Wyllm watched on wordlessly as the Ker' was riddled with arrows and bolts before he composed himself leaving the courtyard.
