Limericks Of The Vale

"Oy, lads! Gather at the docks, and let's sing a few verses, eh," says Petyr. He grabs his lyre out of a chest and dusts it off. "This world lacks songs of it's own yet, songs and rhymes that future halflings will tell over and over, eh. Perhaps if ye sing a particularly clever bit, we'll have Lyra write it down and make a book or two! It doesn't have to be the straight limericks of Dunwood. But, of course, it must rhyme!" He begins to play and sing.

"It's said that a Brandybuck lad

is never found sulking or sad,

for the summers of the Vale

are hot and full of ale,

so the lasses go scantily clad!"

Feeling braver than normal, Qaton pipes up, ending each line in abrupt stops.

The fields of the Vale are of gold.

An' the folk are equally bold!

But kiss a she-hobbit

an' if she doesn't stop it,

You can't say you wer'n't warned and/or told!

The tall ones are a rather odd type,

picking wheat before it is ripe,

and they love to fight wars

and loot all the stores,

and they're always lookin' to gripe!

Rill begins to speak in a clear, musical, and almost romantic voice.

"'er 'air is gold, like summer 'ay,

'er eyes are bright like a very 'ot day.

'er skin is soft, like a sheep's new wool,

a man who don't love 'er is surely a fool."

*Sweetpea sits down and clears her thoart and begins to sing*

Roads go ever ever on,

Over rock and under tree,

By caves where never sun has shone,

By streams that never find the sea;

Over snow by winter sown,

And through the merry flowers of June,

Over grass and over stone,

And under mountains in the moon.

Roads go ever ever on

Under cloud and under star,

Yet feet that wandering have gone

Turn at last to home afar.

Eyes that fire and sword have seen

And horror in the halls of stone

Look at last on meadows green

And trees and hills they long have known.
