I think just coding a shield would be better. It would be a circle of iron ingots in the crafting table, then a stick in the middle for a handle, then you could replace the iron with wood for a wooden shield. Think LOTR or ANY movie with armor really, does all the Uruk'Hai's armor break before they die? No.

I really like the idea, but if you have diamond armor I would be mad if it broke really quick since it's very expensive and diamonds are hard to find these days. All in all I think it's a good idea.
