_Crayin 8 Share Posted March 4, 2013 I've been wandering for a while now but, how long and how would i make a server like this one. What i mean by this is i'm making a server, i've planned it out, designed a map, but what on lotc makes it popular, makes people rp and not break rules. If i get an answer thanks a bunch! Ever 2648 Share Posted March 4, 2013 LoTC launched at a time when MC multiplayer was rather new. There weren't many roleplaying servers around. The few that did exist were rather small (think 10 - 30 players). LoTC's draw was the size and scale. The map was crafted wonderfully. Wars were epic, 50-60 man battles. There was an interesting storyline, the classic good vs evil struggle that anyone and everyone could enjoy. The Wandering Soul system let everyone taste what they too could enjoy if they joined. You could start your own village, city, or hell, even a whole nation. Asulon rode on the curtails of Aegis' success. Anthos hopes to relive the spirit of Aegis. We'll see how that goes. TLDR: LoTC popped up at the perfect time with the right amount of restriction and open-ness. It was a perfect world that appealed to most, if not all, fantasy fans. _Crayin 8 Author Share Posted March 4, 2013 I see. Another question just popped to mind though: Does lotc host the server or do they pay a company. If the latter then how much would a server with that much space cost and (even if they host themselves) how much memory/ram is allocated to it. I may come up with more
Ever 2648 Share Posted March 4, 2013 I believe we're hosted on our own machines. I wouldn't be able to give you any specs 'cus... I don't know them! Heh.
_Crayin 8 Author Share Posted March 4, 2013 Ah heres another question. What program(s) where used to make the maps and roughly how many people help build. AND how are the names thought of.
MonkeyCoffee 516 Share Posted March 4, 2013 Worldpainter was used to create the initial map, after that, it was WorldEdited and Voxeled, and after that, just build on.
_Crayin 8 Author Share Posted March 4, 2013 Im just going to keep going till i run out of questions. How big was the world painter map, what is voxelbox and how long did iylt take you to do the landscape.
Ever 2648 Share Posted March 4, 2013 Aegis was a big map with everything rather close together. A LOT of wilds. No clue how long it took to build, I'd assume a month or two. Asulon was a big map with everything rather far apart. A LOT of wilds. About a month to build. Anthos is a good-sized map with everything father than Aegis but closer than Asulon. Like 6 months? to build. You can download the Aegis map from the website.
_Crayin 8 Author Share Posted March 4, 2013 How do you get people to stay in char and not mess about.
Ever 2648 Share Posted March 4, 2013 People stay in-character because... that's how you roleplay, and roleplaying is fun. Those who are bad influences on the server and hurt roleplay (extreme metagamers, powergamers, hackers, spammers, etc) are banned or punished. Telanir 6975 Share Posted March 4, 2013 I suppose this question could be useful, but this doesn't really pertain to LotC to the extent that it will help players roleplay. Bottom line is, if you want to start up a server, be prepared to do a hell of a lot of work as well as several weeks, maybe months, simply planning, building, and working to make it appealing to the desired player audience.
