A Legacy

The snow crunched under the toes of the young halfbreed as she searched high and low for the man she knew and loved. The man whom she had lost nearly three years prior. As she walked on, she held tight the toddler in her arms. The young child kept quiet as her mother continued her serarch. The child soon begins to cry as the halfbreed falls into the snow, flurries of white powder took flight as the halfbreed laid in the snow, pulling her child close to her. Her breath puffing out in clouds as she struggles to get up.

 

"Mama?" the child chimes in trying to see her mother's face. The halfbreed frowns as she looks at her Mali'ker daughter. The child would never see her face, never know what she had gone through in the past three years trying to find her daughter's father, the man who had shown her so much in her shortened life. As she struggles to her feet, the child places her hands on her mother's face. "Warm." she giggles. Slowly the halfbreed looked down at her child, knowing she would have it hard if she did not find him.

 

The air grew colder as night fell and the halfbreed moved to find a place to hide. Seeing a cave, she drew into it, her body shivering as she wrapped the blankets tighter around the young child. Both soon fell asleep in the cave. As morning approached, the toddler awoke happy and warm. "Mama. Hungy." she said softly. Her blind blue eyes staring into the darkness of the face. "Mama?" She felt around, only feeling cold stone beneath her fingers.

 

Slowly the toddler wandered into the snow, the blizzard having lifted. "Mama?" she called as she continued to wander. As she cried for her mother, a young traveller found her. "Where are your parents?" he asks. The child whimpered and curled up in his warm arms. Within a few moments he found where the child had been staying. Glad to learn the infant could not see, he pulled out of the cave the body of the halfbreed. "Mama?" she asks unable to see what he is doing.

 

"No child. Mama went to the creator." he said sadly as he buried the halfbreed under a tree. "Lets get you warm and somewhere safe.

 

 

 

 

 

((This was meant to be posted a while ago. It is official Eluana Sweetgrass has passed away, leaving behind her last child. Those who knew Luna will not know she has passed as she has been missing for ten years now.

 

Rest in peace Luna. You were fun to play. I will miss you))
