  4. Palatinus Symbole - The prayer: We must be ever-vigilant, for if we become unwary and weak the enemies of Artemisia will devour us utterly. Place your faith in ‘’Invictus’’ to protect you, place your trust in your Faith to lead you, and put your strength in your sword to deliver you from those who would destroy your Empyreal. description: The Palatinus are a military order of Empyreal that, amongst their duties, hunt apostates and watches over the Solarmancer’s. While they are officially deemed a force of defenders by the Solarmancer ‘s. Established to protect the communities of the faithful from magical threats, they are in fact an army unto themselves; well-equipped, highly disciplined and devoted to the destruction of non-believers in the name of Invictus. One of their most important tasks occurs during a Solarmancer’s transformation. During this, a Palatinu watches over the body of the Solarmancer’s, ready to kill him or her if demonic possession occurs. To help them control the Solarmancer’s, they have the ability to dispel magic and to inhibit spell-casting. Another task is to ensure that every child that is born in the nation with magic be brought to the Soarmancer’s to raise out of fear of him turning into a necromancer. A group of Palatinus is led by a Vicarius Palatinu and each temple in Empyreal is assigned one. Palatinus are also responsible for tracking fugitive Solarmancer’s. As they see it, they protect the innocents of the outside world from magic… but they also protect solarmancer’s from the outside world, a world that fears them for very good reasons. It is a Palatinus place to watch their charges for signs of weakness or corruption, and should they find it to act without hesitation for the good of all. That this occasionally leads to charges of tyranny and abuse is, according to the Arc Solamancer, a price that must be paid for the security the Palatinus offer. Some are saying, however, that this needs to change. They remind the world that magic users are not controlled by Palatinus everywhere in this world: not among the Orc shamans or Elven druids… and those societies are, arguably, no worse off. The Palatinus, however, are nothing if not certain about their role. From all around Empyreal the Domino Palatius commands the Palatinus to serve Invictus’s will and keep the peace. By the common folk they are seen as self-sacrificing men and women, vigilant warriors that form the first line of defense between humanity and the chaos that once ruled the land in old Aegis. To the solarmancer’s they are often seen as oppressors, even well-meaning ones, and the gap between them is growing larger with each passing year. They also hunt magic users away from the shores of Empyreal. Code of conduct: A Palatinus must be good and will lose Invictus’s blissing if he ever willingly commits an evil act. Additionally, the Palatinus code requires that he respect legitimate authority, act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use their help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents. A Palatinu also must make sure that citizens do not fall out of favor of Invictus or commit acts of blasphemy. While he may adventure with others from different organizations, a Palatinus will never knowingly associate with evil persons, nor will he continue an association with someone who consistently offends his moral code. A Palatinus may accept only henchmen, followers or cohorts whose intentions are good. A Palatinus who violates this code, becomes an ex Palatinus , and loses the power given to him by Invictus’s until he atones for his violations. Sayings. May Invictus’s light shine upon us once more. (When the sun goes down) Invictus’s blessing is upon us, his light shine’s upon us once more! (When the sun goes up) Ashes we were, and ashes we become. Invictus, give this young woman/man a place at your side. Let us find comfort in the peace she/he has found, in eternity. May Invictus shelter his children as we journey in the darkness Blessed are those who stand before the corrupt and the wicked and do not falter May the Creators light touch you. Regulations are strictly enforced, and a broad array of punishments could be inflicted upon a Paladin who broke them. Minor punishments · Castigatio – being hit by the Militum Palatinus with his staff or · – Reduction of rations or to be forced to eat barley instead of the usual grain ration · Pecuniaria multa – Reduction in pay, fines or deductions from the pay allowance · – Flogging in front of his Paladin brothers or the whole order. · – Whipping with a "short whip" — a much more brutal punishment than simple flogging. · Gradus deiectio – Reduction in rank · Missio ignominiosa – Dishonourable discharge · – Loss of time in service advantages · Militiae mutatio – Relegation to inferior service or duties. · Munerum indictio – Additional duties Major punishments · Fustuarium — a sentence for desertion or dereliction of duty. The Palatinus would be stoned or beaten to death by cudgels, in front of the assembled Palatinus, by his fellow Palatinus , whose lives had been put in danger. Palatinus under sentence of fustuarium who escaped were not pursued, but lived under sentence of banishment from the nation. · Decimation — a sentence carried out against an entire unit which had mutinied, deserted, or shown dereliction of duty. One out of every ten men, chosen by lots, would be beaten to death, usually by the other nine with their bare hands, who would be forced to live outside the camp and in some instances obliged to renew their oath.
