  1. Fellow scholars, I am deeply pleased to inform you that, after deciphering the scattered tomes that accounted his travels, I have come into contact with the retired Aerin Lissar. He is faring well, though he has asked me not to divulge his new whereabouts, for his health requests he stay away from the turmoil that now sweeps our lands. However, he has been most hospitable, and even entrusted me with the entirety of the notes he and his companions drew up. I can assure you, they are most insightful. And even though it may overthrow some of the information that we until now assumed to be true, I am positive that this collection will rapidly advance our knowledge of the eldest of tongues in the near future. Respectfully, Rivell Gordian
  2. ((Well, my take would be to copypaste this page directly, as I am satisfied with my own setup. You formatted the wiki a bit differently, which is of course fine, so I leave the decision up to you. If it were up to me, though, the grammar stuff you're requesting will be directly copied from the main page. I also noticed some words I didn't put on the main thread. I did so now, though there's still the 'heya' matter which I'll add to curious words soon. Though I don't know how to integrate this word yet.))
  3. Ah yes, the Verge, a new mystery unravels; a new chapter begins. I have been absent from the digging fields for quite some time now, but I suppose a new expedition to this 'Verge' wouldn't be the worst thing.
  4. I'd be careful advocating that. While it is essentially true (a great RPer would work wonders with virtually any character you offer him), the Mary Sue usually champions for a certain kind of player. If left unchecked, other signs of the Suethor's neophyte status will begin to simmer through, and she will propagate the fundamental mistakes as she acquires experience. Not good! Of course I agree that if your avatar turns out to be a Sue, it's not too late to repent. You don't have to discard your entire character sheet and start overnew. However, you do have to reflect and wonder if your roleplaying priorities are stacked in the right order, and some core changes might be necessary. RP skill comes with a learning curve, after all.
  5. Very good guide! Like it. Mary Sues are the first tripping block for many RPers so I'm glad this is getting pointed out thoroughly. My concrit: Try to make your examples less laughably blatant. I know of many Sues running around in ignorance because they'd see these examples and think 'Heh I don't do THAT... I must be good.'
  6. Hmm, that's actually a pretty good approximate. Further than I'd expect people getting. Keep going; you'll get there! November 7 Update: Added various misc. words, most of them translations for the Druid aspects currently being used by higher-ranked druids Added words for Fire and Water (sorry if they're not how you wanted them, Aurea) Stressed the elven need for recombination of words, modifiers and affixes. Goal is to just keep updating until people can speak Elvish in Minecon. Not that they would, but it's a good goal. Tip is to not translate these words too literally. It may seem secure, but it makes the translation sound like those bot translators (which always get laughed at :(). People always get a bit of freedom when overcoming a language barrier.
  7. November 5: Quick Changelog: Added various words Added simple nouns to indicate past and future. These will be replacements for past and future tenses. Also added a 'CURIOUS WORDS' section for the most intricate elvish words to help readers understanding them. Contains the words 'ito' and 'tali' for now. Completed the inflection of verbs. Now has 6 inflections for the regular mood and a singular and plural optative mood. Added a way to use the words 'to be' and 'to have' in elvish. Warning: this is very different from normal verbs. ((Question at hand: Who thinks we should make elvish even more needlessly difficult by making their counting system go from 0-8 rather than using the decimal system (0-9)?)) ((Another edit, to illustrate how annoying it is to form elvish sentences and how long words end up getting, this took me fifteen minutes: Valah'leyu, lirr ito mae'leh. Maker'acael'ito narna'yem. Velulaei hae'leh'ehya ahern nae'leh evareh tenna karinah Its translation is left as an excercise to the reader.))
  8. Major update inbound! ('availer' is now Elvish. It's how I entertain myself.)
  9. ((There is a hard limit to creating lore, which is that every humanoid is born in the cloud temple and Aegis is the only continent.))
  10. Oh yeah I get monies. Read the profile comment. Could've sworn you send it already.

Whenever, I guess. I'm pretty sure I won't even notice if you don't send it.

  11. ((Yes, elven words may soon be split up in multiple catagories after all. I can begin to see the point of better organization)) ((I prefer the idea of 'dwarven sleeping cycle' to 'general sleeping cycle', because the latter has an aftertaste of OOCness. Dwarves, however, would have a sleeping cycle very out of sync with the sun's orbit, considering they spend most of their time underground and away from the sun)).
  12. ((You deserve major props for all of your contributions so far. I, however, deserve a stern talking to for failing to update the OP appropriately. It's coming.)) ((It's either. A suffix is an affix, but not every affix is a suffix)) Ultimately, such a decision is for the elven council and them alone. If they intent to follow through with their documented customs, we are left to conclude they will. I can promise I will look out for possible words that carry a meaning similar to this, but I can hardly guarantee it will be those exact words. ((There's consistency to consider, after all)).
  13. (( @Elindor: If you're interested in creating a timescale, may I suggest you create one that justifies the 'elven hours/days/months'? As you know, people use 'Elven X' to denote a real-life timescale, but there is no in-lore explanation as to why elves have such a calender. I think it would be very useful and lore-correct to create something of the sort. ))
  14. So after midterms this week I think I am back to put through some necessary updates on this. I'll keep you posted.
  15. ((What you have the understand that the Elven religion are the drui, an ancient order who worship the Aspects, aka 'Nature in avatar form' (quote from the wiki). That means that Elven words like Sun will immediately be the name of an aspect. Inventing words for Sun, Flora, Fauna, or indeed anything related to nature will mean creating the name of a diety. This particular language phenomenon occurs in most polytheistic cultures. It would only make sense elvish will have the same. But hey, I'm more than up for creating some mythology involving the elven sisters Moon and Sun. The only problem will be getting it official.))
  16. ((You might want to inform yourself about the new Villain App system. AV's are now obsolete for any new applicants. I assume you'll want Unholy Worship villains now.)
  17. Interesting read for all Historians: Sell your recorded history
  18. The Archeologists are obsolete. We've revamped the guild over here: http://www.lordofthe...rians-of-aegis/ And would be happy to have you apply. May I request a lock over here?
  19. (( Updated! I slightly changed Ac and Ah to give them no direct meaning, in accordance with my newfound 'unnatural' idea for undead. I'm thinking Elves have a lot of words that all mean 'natural' and 'unnatural' in a way, since it really reflects their culture. I'm not adding Taeyulaei yet as there's no lore background. Velulaei has a place in lore, provided by myself (yeah I know :P). Adding lore is always difficult as nobody but GMs have a free pass for this stuff, meaning we'd have to justify it ICly through RP. We can start by coming up with a good story, probably including them being brother and sister (or even sisters, to hell with old mythology always making the sun a dude) and maybe gruesome betrayal of a sort.) Connor's words were taken into consideration. Us 4, as self-appointed 'keepers' of the language, should be very open to other contributions, but I'm finding it's hard for posters to immerse into our line of thoughts without reading lots of stuff. It's something we're going to work on. I definitely don't want to discourage outside contributions, and hope people will continue to help in such a way. However, I'm swiping the words for Undead and Ascended for the prior reasons, as well as Cai, because elves greeting each other with an Elvish equivalent of 'Hey' just doesn't feel graceful enough. Aelor will probably be added in the next update. ))
  20. I would agree with my colleague here, to say that these words are divisive with the findings we have so far. Considering them, mostly they seem proper, however. My main objection is that the Elves would have no words for either Undead or Ascended, as their arrival into Aegis was long after the Elven language vanished into obscurity. To venture a guess, I would assume the Elves would refer to anything undead (and perhaps Ascended or holy as well) as certain flavors of 'unnatural'. It would be in harmony with the roots of their culture. Rivell's quill leaves the parchment for a second, tucking it between dry lips. You have inspired me. Your further contributions will be most welcome, and I will look over your other findings at the earliest opportunity. Yup, got you a reply!
  21. Oh that would be very nice indeed. Trouble is that LotC rp chat won't have the font all curvy I'm working on it... EDIT: Updated!
  22. I personally don't like putting triangular shaped punctuation marks into the language. I feel it looks too industrial while the elven language would be graceful and natural. I keep what I have learned to call 'flying commas' (') into the words because they are an artefact from Nanatsuno's work. I suppose they have some pronunciation usage and indicate that two words are related. Affixes are a fine idea. I'll get them integrated into the language as soon as possible. However, I personally like the 's between words, as it makes it slightly more pleasant to read (LotC RP chat is spoken, after all) and it's slightly more exotic. Perhaps suffixes get an apostrophe but prefixes don't? I like elvish to have a peculiarity with the 'and' word. My suggestion is to take ehya, but use it exclusively as a suffix, and not allow 'and' to connect two sentences. Some suggestions: Mali'ker Maliame'ehya - Dark elves and Wood Elves (I know I made Ker mean both Dark and Night, but that Dark Elf and Night Elf is equivalent bothers me 'cause it sounds too WoW. Yay pet peeves). As you see, the apostrophe is added between Mali and Ker first, but with the addition of 'and', the apostrophe moves to the last suffix, and modifier and noun become connected. This gives the language a grammar structure unknown in English. Desired side-effect: People making mistakes in their apostrophes in RP chat, explicitly picturing the failed pronunciation of elfish. Of course, something like this could also be done: Mali'ker 'ame - "Dark (and) Wood Elves" This would be a way to prevent repetition of the word 'elves' (something we tend to avoid in English). I would like to see 'and' attached to a verb when connecting sentences: Ame evareh Velulaei ahereh'ehya - May the forest protect and the Moon bless. (This can't be read as 'May the forest protect the moon and bless' or anything similar because of the SOV structure. Ame Velulaei evareh would be 'may the forest protect the moon') Also, Mecha, I was not sure what you meant by 'tones'. If you want a lot of affixes to denote different tones I can only support that motion. However, if you're implying different cadence (like sarcastic tones) I would be hesitant as 'Elves' can only communicate through RP chat, which is text. So I think we better stay away from intonations and complex pronunciation. So yeah, lots of text. Thanks for all the contributions. I'll make sure they get checked and added to the main post ASAP! TLDR: MY SUGGESTIONS: Intentionally making elvish difficult to simulate bad pronunciation IG Adding 'and' as another suffix to certain words for different uses Using apostrophes for suffixes based on a priority system
  23. That'd be a heck of a lot of translating, most of which doesn't even exist yet. Try going with a 'Ame nae'leh evareh, lirr' as a pretty common Elven saying. The true LoC'rs will understand. Notch won't, so tell him it means whatever you want it to mean ;) Oh, yeah, the truth is I don't know. The existence of affixes should probably be done by someone with authority, as they become really important to form new words. However, because these are so grammar-bound it will also require a lot of work and careful consideration. However, I don't even know if the language WILL have these kinds of affixes (probably will, though). They will be introduced alongside general purpose words. Hmm?
