The Valley of Cathalon, a painting of 1765 THE RHOSWENII DREAM A PUBLICATION FOR THE RHOSWENII BOOK OF CULTURE, 1766 AUTHORED BY: PREMIER OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF KAEDRIN ARCHBISHOP & CARDINAL OF ALBAROSA Laurence August Pruvia PRUVIAN HOUSE OF LITERATURE Pruvia District Nr. 5, Owynsburg Commonwealth of Kaedrin TABLE OF CONTENTS I. PREAMBLE II. DEFINING RHOSWENII III. FACETS OF THE RHOSWENII DREAM IV. MODERN FORMULATION V. THE RHOSWENII DREAM PREAMBLE Mankind is familiar with the concept of symbolism behind terms: vocabulary that, due to a historical context, transcend their literal definitions. The Rhoswenii dream is such a term, as it refers to a set of extremely abstract and esoteric worldviews that has defined the Kaedreni ever since the foundation of The White Rose. To define and analyse an ‘aesthetic’ and ‘feeling’, is a challenge that requires ample hands and great care. Those that partake in The Rhoswenii dream don’t necessarily reflect on the way it influences their lives or what its definition even is. Yet the Kaedreni can make a distinction between a Helenite and a Kaedreni purely on the basis of lifestyle and values. In this publication, I will use my unique duality of clerical and governmental insights to pen a proper analysis of the components that found The Rhoswenii dream. It would be a welcome benefit if the newcomers to the Commonwealth can profoundly understand its cultural heart, and its natives can see their fabric defined and explained. This publication is a part of a greater cultural work: to be known as ‘The Rhoswenii Book of Culture’, wherein the many facets of Kaedreni culture shall be enshrined and further elaborated upon. Ending generations of word-to-mouth continuation of this particular identity. DEFINING RHOSWENII The term Rhoswenii is often used interchangeably with Kaedreni, even though there is a crucial difference between the two. Kaedreni is an all encompassing term for residents within the Commonwealth of Kaedrin, while Rhoswenii refer to lineages that originated from The White Rose - whose capital county in ancient Anthos was, quite obviously, named Rhoswen. Houses such as Helvets, Marna & Reden have branches that go back to the genesis of Kaedrin and this esteemed military organization. This is deemed important due to the frontier nature of previous Kaedreni statehoods, where military hierarchies and the aristocratic families behind them embodied all that these states were. FACETS OF THE RHOSWENII DREAM The Rhoswenii Dream consists of various facets, from political to spiritual, that shapes a cohesive worldview that the Kaedreni adhere and aspire to manifest. When classifying each individually, one can trace back the individual origins of something that now encompasses each Kaedreni life entirely. THE FRONTIER Militarism The first renditions of Kaedrin as a nation were placed as a frontier between the realm of mankind and that of the Elves. The perpetual conflict with the Elves, and the reliance on military structures, established a fair degree of militarism in the day to day lives. A family that resided in the older Kaedrins relied on military salaries, business and employment to survive and thrive. Titles of peerage or capital were less relevant in comparison to holding high office within the White Rose, who went as far to attach a title of King to that of Grandmaster of the Order. Understanding this, one can argue that the prominent presence and reverence of troops creates an extensive romanticization of professional military careers. A young Rhoswenii has plenty of reason to, and is exposed to large quantities of influence, that makes him aspire to be a military hero from early on. To be able to serve your nation and expand it is the greatest manifestation of Rhoswenii destiny, and lives on as popular folktales and memorials in eras of peace. Agrarianism Rhoswenii ancestors had lived and prospered in a frontier state. But what this exactly meant depends on what you perceive as a ‘frontier’. The early renditions of Kaedrin were marked by a collection of estates granted by soldiers, and recently settled hamlets in conquered elven lands. The lack of infrastructure and urbanization was compensated by the strong presence of nature, in the forms of vast plains and strong agrarianism. This way of life dominated Rhoswenii history, being only shortly interrupted by the days of the Veszian metropole in the Republican Era. It has instilled a cultural need to live spacious and to have your own crops, with various Rhoswenii families growing from their autarky to large commercial enterprises. Even though the days of an endless frontier, conquest and decentralization are over: the modern Kaedreni still prides itself with estates and their agrarian lifestyles. ARISTOCRACY Schmoozing The Rhoswenii enjoyed a stark duality in reputation and perceived lifestyle: either being the warrior-kings of yore, or the wealthiest peers of the Empire. It should be to no surprise that the modern aristocratic trends such as wigs and cigarettes find their origin in the Commonwealth, much like how ancient pastimes such as hunting were reformed to indulge the modern Rhoswenii. The common comfort with weaponry and access to vast swathes of nature and plains made hunting an elegant pastime for the family, but also promoted space-demanding hobbies such as golfing or horse riding. The Commonwealth always was a complex pile of statecraft, which made these pastimes the perfect occasion to resolve matters of state: avoiding the bureaucracy and complicated relationships between jurisdictions in the process. Schmoozing, as the Rhoswenii call it, is the coal that burns the furnace. Specific cultural circumstances made it as essential as it is. Tradition The Rhoswenii had faced near extinction in more or less dramatic ways throughout their centuries of existence: from the all-or-nothing siege of the Dreadfort to the tough restoration after the burning of Ves. In every instance the Rhoswenii managed to persist, reunite and restore a successor to the infamous White Rose state. This reverence of the old ways and lineages manifests in traditions that might seem arbitrary to the outside: why must gatherings to drink wine be so formally initiated? Why do they address folks by titles instead of names? Why is violence frowned upon, until it involves honour? Because this is how it has always been among the Rhoswenii. The old ways are what binds the Rhoswenii to a social contract that transcends their nationhood. MODERN FORMULATION The Commonwealth anno 1765 is a unique rendition of Kaedrin: for the first time, newer lineages and cultures have taken a dominant place in government and society. With most Rhoswenii houses either extinct or low on offspring, the heritage of the Rhoswenii dream now is placed in new hands with new interpretations. We consider this the modern formulation of this concept: one that takes into account the different cultures and histories of the beholders. THE OFFICIAL FORMULATION OF THE COMMONWEALTH Interpretation through policy In an attempt to restore the Commonwealth to its former glory, and in turn attract migrants from other corners of the Empire: the Commonwealth government repetitively advertised to migrants to ‘come to Kaedrin and chase the Rhoswenii dream’. This advertised version removes the ethnic component that most Rhoswenii ideologies have, being oddly Josephite in universality and accessibility to all. Instead of focusing on the historical status quo of the rural frontier and aristocratic, it rather shines a light on the opportunity and value that an individual can enjoy in the Commonwealth. The narrative goes that if you are competent and civilized, you too can sip champagne in the estates of the Rhoswenii upper echelon. The dream isn’t tied to lineage, as much as it is to your own excellence. The many versions of the Residency Bill by the Alderman of Civil Affairs, the State of the Commonwealth speeches and Mayor Bren’s housing policy reaffirm this: with a variety of cultures and lineages being closely involved in governance due to their sheer excellence. They too are now a part of Kaedrin’s fabric, with its dreamy landscapes and excessive wealth. CLERICAL FORMULATION Interpretation through God The Commonwealth is remarkably symbiotic with the Holy Church of the Canon, in that most of the Albarosian and Veszian clergy simultaneously hold a variety of government offices in Kaedrin. Although they do not necessarily stray from the official rendition by its government, the clergy experience and describe the Rhoswenii dream differently from their contemporaries. Primarily, it links the clerical offices of the Church in Kaedrin with its echelons and wealth, Bishops and Archbishops being treated similarly to Counts and Dukes respectively. On top of that, the clergy plays an essential role in realizing the ‘aesthetic’ of the Rhoswenii dream: either through their vineyards, attraction of dignitaries or many experiencing a rags to riches story. The (former) Bishops of Ves are a good example: men who started as a poor farmhands and now schmooze with the Rhoswenii elite. This is a consistent occurrence among the clergy, rendering it a strong influence on how they perceive the Commonwealth as a society. They furthermore emphasize the divine precedents of extravagant living found in the Holy Scrolls, rather than focusing on economic opportunity like the government does. The good are rewarded with wealth in capital, friends and family: and showing these off is a form of gratitude to God. This paves the way for the extravagant, socialite lifestyle that all in Kaedrin aspire to have to find its way in the clergy as well. They can participate in it too, despite their vows to God and His Institution. THE RHOSWENII DREAM In summary: the Rhoswenii dream is both a goal and a reality in which the many citizens of the Commonwealth adhere to. It describes what success is: the ability to reside in a spacious estate where you own its land, where you can live extravagantly and self-sufficiently: finding yourself among socialites and the opportunities they offer. Achieving this would be the greatest emancipation and indulgence a human can achieve. It serves as a goal Rhoswenii and migrants can aspire to achieve during their lives in the Commonwealth, as much as it defines who is accomplished and who is not for Rhoswenii standards.
  3. MENDACIUM DE VICTUS A RESPONSE TO ACTA NON VERBA BY @ReveredOwl AUTHORED BY His Eminence, Laurence August Pruvia Cardinal Albarosa Secretariat To His Holiness the High Pontiff SIGNED His Eminence, Anton Barclay Cardinal Jorenus His Grace, Erasmus von Gertreide Prelate of Albarosa Bishop of Ves ON BEHALF OF His Holiness the High Pontiff James II Let us begin with a prayer to provide all men with guidance to see through the slanderous allegations made by the former Bishop of Ves, Friar Boniface: the only clergyman to be banished from his own former diocese and the Imperial capital simultaneously. Dominus, dux homines et mulieres de hoc pulchra gentem videre per fibs de Patre Bonifacio. Quaeso, ignosce, Pater, ut bene, quia ille fuerit occaecati a vera via. The Holy Church of the Canon faces a grotesque generational issue among its membership. Most veterans who are nearing the age of natural passing, had in one way or another experienced a horrific era for the faith. Under the Pertinaxi, the Church was cornered, ridiculed and rendered useless: this trauma lives on through our older, more frail of mind contemporaries. While we can sympathize with these remnants of distrust to the state, new blood combined with a new era have established a superior paradigm for our Holy Mother Church. Our harmony with the Fidei Defensor, and our extensive network in secular organizations, forwards the interests of the Church at a pace and scale unseen before. We do not have to defend the success of this formula, as clergymen take the highest offices of mankind’s realm throughout. Can the state ignore the faith and His Word, if it is run in cooperation with the guardians of the Holy Scrolls? Let us begin with the affair regarding Vice-Chancellor Rodericus, where His Holiness the High Pontiff relieved him of his office. The Vice-Chancellor is a role that is founded on the notion that he stands above the parties in the church, either dogmatic or political. By signing an epistle that declared themselves a faction on both grounds, wherein they considered people of the clergy immune to accountability from secular organizations, he rendered his position untenable. Not only did he oppose direct dogma implemented by His Holiness himself, he told the collective congregations of mankind that their governments may not and cannot fulfill the will of its people. The banishment of Boniface was legislated into effect through a democratic mandate: citizens of his own diocese voted to banish their former Bishop. No man of the cloth can claim to transcend that, without clerical supremacist (and therefore Darfeyist) motives clouding his reason. The leveled accusation that the church is politically divided is awkward, considering the unity and diversity of our current clergy. Whereas the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska and the Commonwealth of Kaedrin cling onto remnant hostilities over historical betrayals, the dioceses of Jorenus and Albarosa are close allies. Whereas most Imperial Subjects are carved over ethnic lines, the dioceses are the most diverse of the realm, rivaling even Helena in the sheer wealth of different cultures and origins coming together for a singular purpose. Rhoswenii are tutored by the Waldenian Bishop of Jorenus, as Ruskans are baptized by a Rhoswenii Bishop. A former Pertinaxi runs a monastery, as former Curonians seek another in Vuillermoz. Vuillermoz also is a state of the Church that erases political and ethnic divides in favor of their common purpose to serve God. To what divide, then, does Friar Boniface refer? The divide is between those who recognize the authority of the High Pontiff, and those who reject it in favor of a pseudo-Church led by Boniface himself. He cites the absence of his mendicant compatriots in ecclesiastical governance as the reason for this ‘divide’, yet both he and his associate Friar Bram resigned their cardinalate voluntarily. Though His Holiness admitted he stumbled in removing Boniface from the Synod originally, the friar took the High Pontiff’s apology and spat in his face with it, using the restoration of his ecclesiastical authority only to resign in disgrace. Is it the Mother Church’s fault that these spiteful departures did not spark the popular uprising for which they hoped? And why ought there to be a popular uprising, when the majority of God’s faithful have enjoyed new heights of harmony and inclusion under His Holiness’ administration? In fact, it is Friar Boniface’s unwillingness to accept this prosperity, because it did not come through his iconoclastic ideals, that is the source of the ‘divide’. This serves as testimony that, while some claim to be more holy because they swear monastic vows, it is in fact nothing but clerical posturing and pretension. Is not the purpose of a friar to live in holy obscurity, to serve humbly and meekly? To constantly call attention to one’s own voluntary poverty, to criticize others and look down upon them for walking the path God ordained, is the true arrogance. We move now to Boniface’s heterodox and unhistorical beliefs about the relationship between the temporal and the spiritual. He claims that clergymen ought to be barred from secular office, but this is not in keeping with the traditions of our faith. Priests and monastics have a long history of righteous participation in politics, namely: St. Evaristus and St. Clement served in the government of Exalted Owyn; High Priest St. Everard of Al’Khazar served as a minister in the Sheffield government; St. Thomas of Ager, a monastic brother, served as a steward in the government of Kralta; High Pontiff St. Daniel the Great served in government during his time as a priest; St. Noah of Petrus, the Bishop of Istria, served as Mayor of Petrus and in the government; St. Wilfriche, a priest, served as Lord Chancellor in the government of King Francis Carrion. Saint Wilfriche in particular was slaughtered by Darfeyists, who believe in clerical supremacy over the state: is this saint now a Darfeyist to the likes of Friar Boniface? The Church is not a walled fortress, barring entry to all but the most virtuous, hurling down proclamations upon the masses. Exalted Owyn created the High Priests St. Evaristus and Clement, and “At Owyn’s command, the brothers set shepherds over the flock of men, and so created a priesthood for their instruction, in anticipation of the second son of spirit.” (Gospel 5:5) The clergy live amongst those they serve, taking an oath to GOD for their instruction. How can the Church be expected to implement GOD’s will if no man of GOD may take up temporal authority over their flock? The Holy Orenian Empire was established by Exalted Godfrey himself; it is only right that the Church should work through it, implementing the law of the Holy Scrolls. And what instead? In Friar Boniface’s world, much as in the days of Darfey, hordes of armed monks would tear down the institutions of state, rather than using them to correct moral failings where necessary. GOD created the estates of the world, and with the cooperation of a virtuous priesthood, they implement His justice. A priest swears oaths of virtue and instruction to GOD--he is arguably more qualified for secular office than a layman, who swears no such oaths. Finally, we address Friar Boniface’s concern for the clerical vestments and wealth of some clergymen. We call his attention to the prophetic annunciations of the Exalted Owyn “There he fasted for three days, and on the third he was blessed with true holiness. He wore garb of fine make, and the signet of his father” (Gospel 4:30-31) and Exalted Godfrey “Eshtael girded Godfrey in kingly finery, and gave him the horn and laurel, and Godfrey’s weapon became a scepter of rebuke and rulership” (Gospel 6:23). And finally, we call attention to passages from the Canticles of Charity, Temperance, and Fidelity: “I am the Lord GOD without peer. I created the metals of the earth, and the onyx and the alabaster, and placed within your groves the trees of incense and resin, and gave the beasts of the earth their fine coats.” (Virtue 2:3-4) “I am the Lord GOD without peer. I grew the first grapes of the vineyard, and gave unto Horen the first wife.” (Virtue 3:1-2) “For I have ordered your station and birth, and I have established the order of things. And you shall not envy the lives of others, for all virtuous paths are equal in My eyes, and all shall be rewarded not according to their station, but their virtue.” (Virtue 6:6-7) By these verses, GOD demonstrates to us that there is no moral value, good or bad, to material wealth and finery: indeed, the prophets themselves wore riches according to their high rank. While we may congratulate those who voluntarily relinquish the comforts of the world, to honestly acknowledge one’s wealth is no shame in GOD’s eyes; shame arises when one values the material above the spiritual, when one envies the wealth of others, or when one fails in their charitable duty to the poor. Does Friar Boniface criticize Exalted Godfrey for wearing kingly finery and bearing a golden scepter? We know he does not. Thus we hope he will correct his view that wealth in any form is incompatible with virtue. GOD orders the estate of the world, and all virtuous paths are equal in His eyes, be they of high status or low. So we do celebrate those who live in pious poverty and contemplation before GOD, but we chasten them not become arrogant by it. This is the true sin of Darfeyism: as John of Darfey did in his usurpation of the Orenian throne and his slaughter of King Francis’ court, it is to become arrogant and self-absorbed by one’s clerical status. In Acta Non Verba, Friar Boniface slanderously declaims one of the most successful High Pontiffs of our generation, alleging he is little more than an incompetent puppet. Thus the friar foolishly displays the pretension behind his actions. He would unrighteously usurp the authority of the High Pontificate, and as an autocrat enforce the mendicant life upon all clergymen, thereby robbing the monastic vows of all spiritual value. Clergymen, immune to civil authority, would wander the land as untouchable kings. Thus we call upon the faithful, consider this: in this age we have achieved an unprecedented expansion of the faith under His Holiness’ guiding hand. The High Pontiff, as the Exalted command us in the Holy Scrolls, works in pious harmony with the Empire, and clergymen serve loyally among their flock rather than in prideful separation. Who, then, are the true Darfeyists? With our successes and prosperity universal, one wonders why a man such as Friar Boniface cannot cooperate with His Holiness. Why must the path of sedition and chaos reign supreme, when mankind has never known so many paths to address one’s concerns and to find it represented? The conscious and obsessive decision not to do so speaks more of the inadequacy of Friar Boniface, than any concerns that in his mind clouds the church. Instead of writing epistle upon epistle discrediting our valiant, diligent and loyal clergymen, he should do his job: to make the faith more appreciated and present in the realm of Arcas. 4. THE KAEDRIN TAX CODE ENTRENCHED LEGISLATION: Economic Charter Proposal, 1763 - Citizen Louis Entier Municipal Tax Proposal, 1765 - Mayor Edmund Bren Proposed Payment of Tithes to Dioceses, 1765 - The Holy Canonist Church Dubois Farmer Tax Proposal, 1765 - Minister Mariana Dubois TABLE OF CONTENTS: I. PREAMBLE II. LEGAL PURPOSE III. TAX RATES IV. TAX PROCEDURE IV.I. FARM ESTATE PROTECTION IV.II. LOCAL CHARTERS V. TAX EXEMPTIONS I. PREAMBLE The Kaedreni people are remarkably diligent: establishing many housing and commercial opportunities through the municipal and Commonwealth government’s provided platforms. Whereas the Kaedreni citizen is free to enjoy the fruits of his labour, as much as keep his wealth he generates through entrepreneurship and leal servitude: it must be recognized that the state requires funds to honour its obligations externally and internally. Understanding this, the House of Commons has accepted a variety of proposals that de facto establish a coherent taxation system. To further entrench this into a singular, public and functional law: we hereby use the ratified legislation to found The Kaedreni Tax Code. II. LEGAL PURPOSE The Kaedreni Tax Code is bound to a variety of formulated purposes in different legislative pieces. Understanding that this fragmented legal framework will cause for confusion and loopholes, the Commonwealth Government opted to limit itself to a summarized set of purposes that grant an automatic mandate for taxation: I. To pay for salaries of functionaries II. To pay for construction III. To pay for resources IV. To pay for legal procedures V. To pay for Tithes to the Diocese VI. To pay for cultural events VII. To pay for other ceremonies and rites III. TAX RATES Different tax rates apply to different circumstances. Owners of Residences in Owynsburg, pay 50 Minas a week in taxation. Owners of Estates in the Dubois District, pay 100 Minas a week in taxation. The Government of Kaedrin, pays 250 Minas a week in Tithes to the Holy Canonist Church. IV. TAX PROCEDURE Taxation is collected every [[Sunday]] of a Saint’s Week by employees of the Ministry of the Interior and the municipal government. They transcribe and register the collected tax per individual, and add it to the treasury account and its ledger. IV.I. FARM ESTATE PROTECTION The Estates that pay tax in the Dubois District, are eligible to a 75 Minas tax return: if they can prove that they are using it to build up a reserve, invest it in their estate or spend it on expenditures of greater social value. IV.II. LOCAL CHARTERS Businesses that originate and primarily operate in the Commonwealth of Kaedrin are tax exempt, if they use their profits to invest into their business or spend it on expenditures of greater social value. Alteration to the rates, the establishment or repealing of a tax, is handled through the House of Commons. Any amendment to the Kaedreni Tax Code must originate as a proposal, get passed in the House of Commons, and receive assent from the Governor-General. These mutations to the Kaedreni tax code must be mentioned as Entrenched legislation, so that the people may seek and find the foundations upon which this tax code is built. V. TAX EXEMPTIONS For certain polities or individuals within the Commonwealth, taxation wouldn’t be prudent. These are entities that should not be troubled with the burden of garnering income, or to be subject to the Commonwealth and municipal tax authorities. Such is registered here: The House of Helvets is tax exempt for their usage of Varoche Palace The Government of Kaedrin is tax exempt for their usage of Dubois District Nr. 1, Owynsburg The Archdiocese of Albarosa is tax exempt for their usage of Dubois District Nr. 10, Owynsburg The Government of Kaedrin is tax exempt for their usage of Pruvia District Nr. 1, Owynsburg The Government of Kaedrin is tax exempt for their usage of Pruvia District Nr. 7, Owynsburg The Government of Kaedrin is tax exempt for their usage of de Sola Street Nr. 1, Owynsburg IN NOMINE DEI Laurence August Pruvia Premier of Kaedrin Mariana Dubois Minister of Interior Edmund Bren Mayor of Owynsburg Erasmus von Gertreide Alderman of Finance
  5. STATE OF THE COMMONWEALTH AN ADDRESS TO THE KAEDRENI PEOPLE Premier of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin Archbishop & Cardinal of Albarosa Secretariat to His Holiness James II Speaker of the Kaedreni House of Commons LAURENCE AUGUST PRUVIA TO THE KAEDRENI HOUSE OF COMMONS Pruvia District nr. 1, Owynsburg, Commonwealth of Kaedrin ON THE 6TH OF TOBIAS’ BOUNTY, 1765 Dearly beloved, -- people of Kaedrin, magnate of the House of Electors, Governor-General and dignitaries, We convene tonight at a house of unlimited potential. As we begin our second convention of the House of Commons, the Government of Kaedrin wishes to rejoice for its continuation of a strong democratic spirit and the prosperity throughout our demesne. Good things are coming for our Commonwealth. Our fair citizens are gathered in this chamber tonight to not just exercise their democratic rights, but to pursue the manifestation of their destiny and pursuit of freedom. They convene as Oren’s finest, profoundly understanding the crucial mandate our people carry on their shoulders collectively: the mandate to restore our beloved Commonwealth, and see to its eternal prosperity. The agenda I will lay out to the people tonight, on behalf of the Government of Kaedrin and the Archdiocese of Albarosa, transcends the Josephite and Everardine divide, and appeals to the custodians of our destiny: the people of Kaedrin. As we convene, Owynsburg enjoys a diligent and steadfast mayor Edmund Bren: who has given an immeasurable contribution to us through the realization of his promises and productive cooperation with the other layers of government. When we walk out of this chamber tonight, our boots stand on finely paved roads, and every citizen returns home to a proper and registered address. Nobody in Owynsburg knows poverty, our prosperity is enjoyed universally. His municipal government presents an unique opportunity to establish our fair Owynsburg as a jewel of this Empire, if only we have the courage, together, to seize it. A greater portion of our working population serves Owynsburg, directly or indirectly, regardless of profession or calling. Men of the cloth, such as Erasmus von Gertreide and Lajos Sándor Károly, deliver the benevolence of god beyond their theological acts: aiding the government as functionaries and labourers with their clergies respectively. The same can be said to our Royal Cabinet members and peers of the realm: who answer a calling beyond the limitations of their formal functions, and tinker with the machine of Kaedreni progress like any other. Nowhere in the Empire can we maintain the Everardine tradition of respecting and revering the peerage and the clergy, while simultaneously working among them as equals and patriots. The colour of the Kaedreni soul is red, white and gold universally. The Archdioceses of Albarosa and Ves promulgate the presence of God within our Commonwealth, making us vigilant in adhering to Canonist values and rites. The clergy of Albarosa fulfills an unique position where they represent our interests in the Church, as much as they represent the Church’s interests in the Commonwealth: to this day, this dual responsibility has not brought forward a conflict of interest or inconveniences. Instead, it has given us an intimate relationship with His Holiness James II and his septarchy. A relationship wherein cooperation, understanding and compromise reign supreme. This reasserts the long established notion that the Commonwealth of Kaedrin is the most pious of vassals. The newly appointed Bishop of Ves, who took my former diocese in my stead, and the new Abbess of Ves Maria Henrietta d’Pertinaxi, have both been invaluable to further establish a Rhoswenii identity for the clergy in both doctrine and style. It has granted our men of god an essential cultural and social role: tailors of our social fabric where commoner and peer alike come together in ceremony and in culture. A fabric so thick, that a man in Guise and Owynsburg toast to the same virtues. That in times of crisis and our great prosperity, we can stand under our banner and feel profoundly at home. We can also be the new home for those that wish to partake in our Rhoswenii agrarian dream, as we have seen with the entry of House Pruvia, House Bren and House Barclay to our Commonwealth formally or through individual migration. Their entry is a testimony to our attractiveness as a nation and a people: a place not muddied by the hordes of the metropolis, or the barren lands of former settlements. We proudly stand in the middle: a position wherein we can enjoy spacious living conditions in our large estates, thriving commerce through local businesses and an intimate and homogeneous society. We have the benefits of being bustling, without the negatives of excess. Under the wise leadership of this Government, Commonwealth and local, we have no reason to expect this to change. This productivity has brought us a well needed revival of our cultural sector in its entirety, courtesy of our titans Anna Maria Pruvia and Mariana Dubois: who entertain our fair folk and promote Rhoswenii traditions throughout our demesne. No chamber in the Commonwealth lies dormant, as delegations of courtiers and visitors head to attend our many activities. If we maintain our celebration of our identities and our prosperity, we will in turn maintain a vibrant atmosphere for our citizens to bask in. This is how the Rhoswenii identity asserts itself back into a prominent place within the Imperial mosaic. Beyond our culture lies a vast expansion of our government bureaucracy: entrusted with handling affairs and offices that once were rendered derelict after the burning of Ves. Lieutenant-Governor Richard Helvets has sought to expand our number of chambers to two, creating a new House of Electors that brings our peers and lord spirituals together. This new chamber will represent the interests of our lords, and one day elect the new King of Kaedrin when succession is necessary. We furthermore welcome our comrades from Helena, entrusted with the establishment of a security apparatus within the Commonwealth of Kaedrin. Lieutenant Tovelm has been sent by His Excellency the Secretary of War to protect our demesne and organize a garrison in Owynsburg. This is to be the start of a fruitful relationship between the Imperial State Army and our fair people. The government asks you to thank them for their service and cooperate whenever and wherever you can. Furthermore, it is of utmost importance to arm and protect yourself out there. Never wander beyond the valley by yourself, and do not trust strangers with particular Ruskan or Lotharingian accents. People of Kaedrin, good times are ahead of us. Remember that it is you, the citizen, that embodies our excellence and our success. Without you there is no Commonwealth, as much as there wouldn’t be a Kaedrin. We must keep the Empire first in our hearts. We must keep freedom alive in our souls. And we must always keep faith in Kaedrin’s destiny that one Commonwealth, under the Emperor and God, must be the dream and promise, and the light and the glory, among all Imperial subjects in Arcas. IN NOMINE DEI, Laurence August Pruvia The Premier of Kaedrin ON BEHALF OF Richard Victor Helvets The Lieutenant Governor-General of Kaedrin Henry Frederick Helvets The Governor-General of Kaedrin

  11. THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ALBAROSA TABLE OF CONTECTS I). Culture I.I). Attire II). Subsidiaries II.I). The Archbishopric of Albarosa II.II). The Bishopric of Ves II.III). The Monastery of Ves II.IV). The Laity Council III). Politics IV). Publications CULTURE At its very foundation, the clergy residing in the Kaedreni Commonwealth is bolstered by vehement loyalist views, forged by years of traditionalism on the behalf of esteemed delegates of the church. The Archdiocese of Albarosa, which translates to White Rose in the common tongue, is renowned for its interconnectedness with the Court of Palace Varoche, the high-walled and lavish homestead of the House of Helvets. Therein, the pious acolytes and laity notoriously venerate the Canonist faith. Their chapels, endowed with beauteous stained glass panels, are garnished too with velvet and gold. The (Arch)bishops of Albarosa, Ves & Jorenus receive Vesnian Champagne from the Duke of Cathalon, 1765. Wine flows like the Ruber through the many halls the clergy reside in -- from its chapels placed throughout the Commonwealth, to the offices where they serve its government. The abundance in capital and humans alike affixes the dioceses of Kaedrin in an eternal golden age where no expense is beyond a mere inconvenience. The future clergymen of Kaedrin find themselves exposed to a strong cultural doctrine as they are upbrought from the veil of youth, enshrined in various rites and legislation that the Kaedreni adhere to. Its most prominent cultural component is the interwovenness between clerical loyalty and Rhoswenii nationalism. Although the days of rampant Owynism are left as vestiges in the great tapestry of Humanity’s history, the notion that Kaedrin holds a special place in the church is still at the forefront. The Rhoswenii clergy holds no aversion to serving Imperial interests or aiding their efforts within their clerical capacity. His Imperial Majesty is the Fidei Defensor and thus, aligns his personal interests with that of the Holy Mother Church. This staunch Imperialism seeps into smaller convictions that reign supreme locally. Generally, it renders the diocese extremely Everardine in its worldview. Their adhered doctrine asserts that His Imperial Majesty is chosen by God through a mandate: only through his delegation may rightful authority, such as the Imperial Diet, Privy Council, and Justice System, be established. Nobility is regarded as highly important to the clergy of Albarosa, most having been raised with great reverence of the great houses of Kaedrin. ATTIRE The attire of the Kaedreni clergy carries distinct Rhosewnii features -- from its colours and fabrics, to its expression of wealth and symbols of status. Different renditions of clerical outfits roam the streets of Owynsburg, each signifying a different tale. Kaedreni Red Robes were popularized by the late Cardinal Krisztián Károly of Ves, who donned the outfit during his tenure as the Bishop of Ves. After his assassination, many of his subordinates that were left behind donned the oufit to honour his restoration of the diocese. Rhoswenii Cardinal Robes were donned by the late Cardinal Krisztián Károly of Ves upon his ascension to the office. Although not as standardized as the previous: it entered clerical history as an outfit of contention, some claiming it is a suspicious mirroring to historical Pontifical robes. Krisztián himself wrote however that it meant to resemble: “the purity of the Rhoswenii people through the red, and the sinless piety of Kaedrin through the white”. The Pruvian Fit was temporarily standardized by Cardinal Pruvia for his priests and acolytes. They were gifted to the more impoverished that flocked to Laurence’s diocese, so that they could fit in with the dignitaries and peers that roamed the Varoche court. Most Acolytes that went to become priests or even Bishops kept true to their fit: seeing it as a symbol of their birth as worthy members of God’s institution. The Pruvia Premium was an upgrade of the Pruvian Fit: meant to better assert the status and fashionability of the clergy from the upper Echelon. Today it is worn primarily by the chief advisors, vicars and prelates within the Archdiocese of Albarosa. SUBSIDIARIES A gathering in the Monastery of Ves, 1765 The Archdiocese of Albarosa administers a variety of polities of relevance to the Holy Canonist Church and the Commonwealth of Kaedrin. Referred to as ‘the Commonwealth in a Commonwealth’, the name does it justice thanks to the following subsidiaries: HIERARCHY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE THE ARCHBISHOPRIC OF ALBAROSA His Eminence the Cardinal of Ves Archbishop of Albarosa Secretariat to His Holiness Laurence August Pruvia Laurence upon his ascension to the Septarchy, 1763 THE BISHOPRIC OF VES His Grace the Bishop of Ves Custodian of Albarosa The Prelate of Ves Erasmus von Getreide Erasmus upon his ascension as Bishop, 1765 His Grace the Vicar of Ves Custodian of Albarosa Lajos Sándor Károly Lajos’ portrait for his Senate campaign, 1761 THE MONASTERY OF VES Her Grace the Abbess of Ves Custodian of Albarosa Lady of the Court Maria Henrietta de Pertinaxi Maria Henrietta upon her arrival to Ves, 1764 The Caretaker of Ves Rheanne Ambrose Markanz Rheanne during the Golden Republic, 1730 THE LAITY COUNCIL The Laity Council is the established organ each diocese must have since the Tenth Golden Bull of Helena, wherein three representatives on behalf of three parties take a seat in the governance of the diocese. They elect a successor to the Archbishop and Bishop, and ensure that the faith upholds the interests of each party respectively. Current members of the Albarosian laity council are: Representative of the Government Mariana Dubois Representative of the People Lajos Sándor Károly Representative of the Clergy Alsend Dunaidh POLITICS Influenced by Kaedreni traditions and values at its heart, the Archdiocese holds utmost belief in preserving the universal Church, the sanctity of the Empire and the role of Humanity at its head. This trinity of virtues, first upheld by the Order of the White Rose and later its Kaedreni successors, continues to resonate in the Archdiocese in almost every aspect. Drawing the bountiful lifestyle of her clergy from the cultural beacon of the Empire, Helena, her conservative view from the heritage of Kaedrin and her devout nature from the Holy Mother Church, the Archdiocese is unique in its reflection of enlightenment coupled with traditionalism. The Archdiocese of Albarosa and its subsidiaries do not follow the tradition of neutrality that most contemporaries do within the Church. The abundance of functionaries, politicians and solicitors simultaneously donning the cloth creates an unique atmosphere of lobbyism and intrigue similar to that of a palace court. Beyond that, they collectively represent the interests of a people and government very particular in its worldview and cultural preferences. Named as the Purple Lobby, in reference to House Pruvia’s influence in the Everardine party, the Commonwealth of Kaedrin and the Archdiocese of Albarosa simultaneously and actively lobby His Holiness to counter further liberalization of Church values. It is led by the Archbishop of Albarosa, Bishop of Jorenus and the Bishop of Ves. Despite the conservative membership of Jorenus’ clergy, the Purple Lobby also actively opposes attempts to centralize church politics around the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska: hoping for His Holiness to give special attention to their own realm instead. Laurence in his autumn outfit sends a letter to the Pontiff, Kaedreni painting of 1764. The clergy in Kaedrin is highly prominent in many offices of the Commonwealth, lacking the tendency to separate clerical affairs from that of the state. Most are men of the cloth as much as they are solicitors, aldermen, stewards and advisors. This establishes a unique relationship between the Church and the Kaedreni upper echelon, where friendship and schmoozing are the rites of passage binding two ancient institutions to cooperate at an intimate level. While an effective system, it is far from uncontroversial. Polar opposite to them stand the Wigbrechtians and Haeseni clerics of the north. While they take an oath of poverty, their colleagues clink champagne glasses just across the border. The stark contrast per diocese creates tension: only fueling the Purple Lobby in its fear of losing ground to the others. Laurence A. Pruvia without a wig talks with Richard V. Helvets, a Helvets gift to the Bishop, 1763. The most recent example of this would be the controversy of Commonwealth of Kaedrin v. Friar Boniface: where Count Richard V. Helvets sued the Wigbrechtian for vagrancy and neglecting his duties as the previous Bishop of Ves. A prominent member in this ordeal was the Cardinal Laurence, who even sat on the legal team as an attorney. This prompted the Wigbrechtians to write an Epistle condemning it, forcing the Bishopric of Ves to respond accordingly. The bickering required an intervention of His Holiness personally as it became a crisis far beyond its weight. Men forgot the underlying reason of this dispute, however. The Wigbrechtians might consider vagrancy normal as a voluntarily impoverished group: abandoning the obsession with worldly things, but the concept of homelessness is alien in the Commonwealth. This is just one facet in the big divide of culture, ideology and clerical interpretations between the two dioceses. 15. THE RAMBLING ROSE NEWS FROM THE OLDE FRONTIER ☩ HELVETS PUBLISHING HOUSE A RHOSWEN-PRUVIA LTD. ENTERPRISE DE SOLA STREET NR. 3, OWYNSBURG THE FIRST EDITION ☩ MAYOR BREN ELECTED! Kaedrin gains an army.. Of Employees The race between Jószef Károly and Edmund Bren had ended in a close victory for the new mayor, ending a milestone event for the Commonwealth: its first election in decades. Mayor Bren was quick to establish a municipal government: appointing an army of bureaucrats to operate his bustling city. “It truly is remarkable” a citizen expressed, stepping aside to make room for thirty stewards marching past her “Folks abroad would often joke about Kaedrin being dead, but then this Mayor employs a government larger than the ISA combined!” Another citizen plugged his ears as hordes of builders climbed onto each other to finish the City Hall within a single hour: “This city is never finished, innit?” he’d grunt, looking at the construction site behind him “But hey, at least this fella is getting things done!”. Mayor Bren’s flagship proposal that revolutionized Kaedreni politics, was to pave the roads in Owynsburg after mere decades. A day after his election, citizens woke up to pavements of stone and logical pathways to buildings. We found a woman on her knees, petting the stones on the ground “I-I get to see p-pavements in Owynsburg.” she wept, a tear strolling over her smooth pale cheek “I a-am so thankful..”. The rapid success of Edmund Bren truly is a testament to stellar Kaedreni governance! LEGAL MAYHEM Kaedrin's brightest minds convene Shock, grief and denial: a subpoena was elegantly placed in front of the gates of Owynsburg. The people voted to ask the government to exile Boniface and Arthur, and they were simply not having it! Their legal offense was not taken lightly however, with Count Rochefort allegedly throwing a lawbook through Varoche Palace’s window. “These skunks… These.. Buffoons!” he shouted, stomping around the dining hall: “I will garner the greatest minds and decimate them in the courts!”. The Count was a man of his word, as half of the Pruvia family, two papal attorneys and a crazed textualist all gathered in front of the Palace the next morning. After a lot of babbling, drinking and compensating for each other’s insecurities: the gathering formed a proper legal team and filed two subpoenas back at them. Can the populace handle four lawsuits? “Law is a sport, you see.” Jean of Ves would state, dusting off his crossbow “It’s a bloodsport, it riles people up. The ideal situation would be that Kaedrin subpoenas everyone that ever wronged us, including dead people” he’d nod proudly to his own idea “finest entertainment of all of Arcas”. The Rambling Rose Tavern, one of the newer companies in Kaedrin, rose to the occasion: hosting subpoena writing championships and mock trials against scarecrows dressed as Haeseni citizens. “Time of my life!” Rheanne of Ves expressed, practicing her pointing gesture towards a scarecrow resembling Boniface “Teaching men lessons through imperial legal procedures is perhaps my newest favorite pastime!” RACISM IN KAEDRIN.. AGAIN They just can’t help themselves, can they? When Jeremiah of Ves had proposed a citizenship bill of his own to the House of Commons. It was worryingly racist: creating complicated procedures and rules for everyone but humans, and thus, it was promptly rejected by the people. But he outsmarted the people, and managed to become Alderman of Civil affairs under the municipal government. From this position: he proposed the same citizen bill, but only slightly different. “They are a stubborn folk” professor of Kaedrin studies Chayim Silverstein Phd stated, sipping some tea in Owynsburg “The Empire has moved beyond the social notions of the White Rose, but there are always men jumping at the chance to discriminate against other races.” he shook his head “Racism in Kaedrin behaves like an intelligent cat: climbing over all sorts of barriers and traps to eventually maul a random elf.” Will the government do something against the rise of legislative racism? “Not really” Chayim responded skeptically “Racism and Kaedrin are like a Crown and its king: without it, it just wouldn’t be the same.” “How are the Kaedreni racist?” former Senator Károly scoffed at our correspondent “We had a cave dwarf Senator! Checkmate, you Josephite.” While certainly convincing, the mystery of recurring racism in Kaedrin remains to be unsolved. Whether the new and more subtly racist citizenship bill will pass the House of Commons, remains to be seen. But witnessing Payton Smith clubbing a High Elf with a shovel is not the most convincing of omens. LOCAL PEST: WOMEN DANCING IN WHEATFIELDS Agrarian companies devastated by loss of profits. The citizens of Owynsburg first appreciated the sight of women in white dresses and braids dancing through the wheat fields, some local painters even displaying the sight in the palace and city hall. But the cute sight became a significant economic burden, as the dancing simply didn’t stop. Local agrarian companies now struggle to harvest their fields: fearing to accidentally hit a woman with their scythes in the process. “Mayor Bren must do something!” a farmer slammed his fist on his dinner table “I sell wheat for a living as you know. It’s a fair job.. Ruined by these jumping lasses!” Another farmer shook his head at that “Aye! first nobody tended to these fields, then we had to fight off bandits. But we can’t possibly fight unarmed women?” The Farmer’s Union of Owynsburg is expected to deliver a petition to City Hall soon: asking for the Mayor to relocate the dancing women closer to Guise. But The Dancing Women of Wheatfields Collective Ltd. digresses: “Guise is a renowned remover of pests, as we have seen with their hunting of rats in the old Veszian sewers. Relocating our members to Guise will reasonably result in the death of many passionate Kaedreni citizens. These farmers will have blood on their hands!” the chairman, Rebecca de Getreide would show her palms to us “They will leave us to die at the hands of the de Fallstaffs!” “I have no f**king idea what you’re talking about” Armande de Fallstaff would reply, dusting off his estate in the swamp “but we would definitely appreciate the presence of women here, especially those that can dance!”. The Government of Kaedrin refused to intervene in the dancing women situation, stating that “the invisible hand of the market will relocate the women to the best possible geographical location.” A WORD WITH ED MYRE An Everardine from Helena Mr. Ed Myre has agreed to deliver a statement to the people of Kaedrin: “Let the Everardines be known for three matters, our love of the common man, our love for small business and our desire to create a government that basks in legitimacy. First, large corporate entities have been propped up in the Empire. These entities own a large percentage of real-estate and control a large percentage of commerce. These entities harm small businesses. But not only this, there is an unaddressed problem in our highest offices.” “We have allowed government officials to remain as the head of their businesses and business dealings when they take up the position. This must be put to a stop, I do not believe in the molding of big businesses and state. Naturally problems will arise, conflicts of interest should heads of businesses also be leading government officials.” “I am too wary of the legitimacy and proper judgement of one of our most honored institutions, the Court. I believe certain judges have launched themselves into the political machine. They have lost their apolitical nature. Unlike the Josephites, we believe in an apolitical court, one which will herald a system of true judgements, no matter who is in office.” “I do believe judges should not be making their own political affiliations particularly public. They can vote surely. But to openly campaign or champion a party, it seems to be a conflict of interest. You may have a Josephite call an Everardine judge bias should rule, or the other way around. That is something the system does not need. It hurts the rule of law.” “Finally, a message to the realm; The choice this upcoming election is clear. The Everardine Party wishes to end the mixing of government and business. We wish to uphold the legitimacy of the courts. We affirm our Canonist faith. We affirm our desire to remove the exclusivity of politics.” “A vote for us, is a vote in your interest.” KAEDRENI OF THE DAY Respecting the best among us Mariana Dubois, Minister of Interior Resident Narcotic of the Palace We of the Rambling Rose are thankful for Mariana Dubois: a diligent woman that de facto led the government before the army of bureaucrats arrived at the courtesy of mayor Bren. She led the building effort with Albrecht Euler, significantly expanding and renovating the city: making it a true jewel of the Commonwealth. She did all this while recovering from an incident relating to narcotics that had almost claimed her life. But her Rhoswenii health and daily prayers didn’t let the drugs win, causing her to rise as a phoenix and march onwards to help Kaedrin with unparalleled dedication.
  16. THE COMMONWEALTH OF KAEDRIN ”One God, one country and one law” - Maxim of St. Peter TABLE ON CONTENTS I. The Commonwealth Covenant II. The Crown of Kaedrin III. The Royal Cabinet IV. Chambers of the Commonwealth V. Constitution & Charter of Rights VI. Members of the Commonwealth VII. Kaedreni Ethnicity & Minorities VIII. The Chronicle I. THE COMMONWEALTH COVENANT Whereas other Imperial Subjects find their hierarchy in mere feudalism: Kaedrin on the other hand stands as a construct of different political, ethnic and feudal entities, each autonomous and bound to Kaedrin to different degrees. What earns the Commonwealth its name is their mutual agreement to prioritize the collective interests of the realm and its people as a whole: transcending feudal obligations, municipal citizenship or ethnic collectives. This is vested in The Commonwealth Covenant, an oath that all citizens and subjects within the Commonwealth of Kaedrin are automatically bound by: “Under one God, one Country and one Law: I bind myself to manifest the destiny of a free Kaedreni folk, under His Imperial Majesty. My colors are to be red, white & gold: my identity Kaedreni. Below me stands nothing, above me the Empire and God.” The Commonwealth Covenant is universally binding, in that all of Kaedreni are expected to adhere to it. Although each Kaedreni citizen is by definition a signatory of this Covenant: an election of His Royal Majesty the King of Kaedrin prompts the realm’s prominents to ceremonially sign the covenant with the new royal signature. II. THE CROWN OF KAEDRIN INCUMBENT KING HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, Peter III Holy Orenian Emperor King of Kaedrin and Grand Duke of Ves Has mandated his esteemed representative to execute the daily governance of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin and its subsidiaries to: INCUMBENT GOVERNOR-GENERAL HIS EXCELLENCY Henry Frederick Helvets Governor-General of Kaedrin III. THE ROYAL CABINET The Council of State of Kaedrin, known in shorthand as the Royal Cabinet or just as the Cabinet, is the governing body of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin. It carries the mantle of daily governance on behalf of His Royal Majesty the King of Kaedrin. His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor of Kaedrin Richard Helvets, Count of Rochefort, represents the Governor-General in the Cabinet and ensures his will is properly executed. His Excellency the Premier of Kaedrin Laurence August Pruvia, is entrusted with presiding over general government affairs within the Commonwealth, while also serving as its spokesperson. He is simultaneously Solicitor-General of Kaedrin, and is tasked with enforcing Imperial law as well as serving as the Cabinet’s chief lawyer and regional prosecutor. Her Excellency the Minister of Internal Affairs Mariana Dubois, is entrusted with managing the domain of the Commonwealth and its economic development. She is the representative of the Commonwealth Government in the City of Owynsburg: ensuring that the municipal government adheres to the Commonwealth Covenant. The Royal Cabinet is seated in Varoche Palace, who in turn is located in the capital city of Owynsburg. The capital is a separate polity within the Commonwealth however: separating the central government from its local variant. The mayor plays a double role, representing the polity that is Owynsburg and the Commonwealth government simultaneously. The incumbent is: His Excellency the Mayor of Owynsburg, Edmund Bren IV. CHAMBERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH The Commonwealth boasts two organs that preside over governmental affairs and grant assent to the central government, on behalf of the people or the bourgeoisie. The House of Commons is an open assembly for all citizens and legislates on behalf of them. The House of Electors assents the establishment of new peerage in Kaedrin and the succession of its King. HOUSE OF COMMONS Presided by His Eminence The Premier of Kaedrin Speaker of the House of Commons Archbishop of Albarosa Cardinal Ves Laurence August Pruvia HOUSE OF ELECTORS Presided by His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor of Kaedrin Magnate of the House of Electors Count of Rochefort Richard Victor Helvets V. CONSTITUTION & CHARTER OF RIGHTS The Commonwealth of Kaedrin is governed by virtue of the Instrument of Government, which is colloquially known as the Constitution. It establishes processes for the government as well as the election of the monarch. Accompanied with that is the Charter of Rights: a legal document establishing the unique liberties and rights of Kaedreni citizens. VI. MEMBERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH The Commonwealth consists of multiple polities, each being different in nature and importance. They are bound together through the covenant and adhere to the established central government. The members of the Commonwealth are: The Kingdom of Kaedrin The Duchy of Cathalon The Duchy of Ves The Archbishopric of Albarosa The Bishopric of Ves The County of Rochefort The County of Kreden [In Abeyance] The Viscounty of Rillsworth The Barony of Aldenburg [In Abeyance] The Barony of Guise [In Abeyance] The City of Owynsburg House of Helvets House of Pruvia House de Falstaff House of Károly House of Dubois The citizens of Owynsburg admire the art in Varoche Palace, 1764. VII. KAEDRENI ETHNICITY & MINORITIES The Commonwealth embraces a variety of polities who in turn, house different ethnic groups of different origins. For the sake of citizenship procedures and to separate ‘foreign’ from ‘native’, certain subgroups are considered woven into Kaedreni society. The Rhoswenii are all who descend from the first generations of Kaedreni in the White Rose, and are currently the most prevalent both in government and the populace. They proudly boast ethnic kinship with the likes of Chivay and Helvets, and are deemed the founding fathers behind the Commonwealth. The Adrians came to live in Kaedrin due to the temporary overlapping with Adria in the annals of history, and are the biggest minority in the Commonwealth. They de facto migrated into Kaedrin after the Duchy of Adria was rendered derelict by the Lord-Protector: and have stayed ever since. The Carnatians migrated to Kaedrin in the late 16th Century after a long diaspora from Haense, and have since been a minority actively involved in governance. They are the newest minority to achieve this particular recognition. The Lodenlanders also came into Kaedrin through Adria and were prominent during the Ves era, although they had now faded into relative obscurity. Remnants of them live on through houses such as Haas or de Ruyter, who now are native to the Crownlands. Anyone from these four ethnicities are presumed to have ancestry within the Commonwealth and will not be forced to follow procedures of integration. VIII. THE CHRONICLE THE ORDER OF THE WHITE ROSE (1414 - 1420) The first Kingdom of Kaedrin was established as not a state with an army, but an army with a state, the army therein being the infamous Order of the White Rose of yore. This military realm was in many ways a pseudo-democracy, with the kingship tied to the office of Grand Master which was elected from among the institution’s knightly membership. HIS MAJESTY, St. Peter I of the House of Chivay (r. 1414 - 1420) The first King of Kaedrin, Peter the First rose from Aeldenic mercenary to sovereign of the era’s most indisputably powerful realm in a lifetime. As founder and Grand Master of the Order of the White Rose, Peter’s service (And that of his knight-brothers) to the Emperor in conquering the elven tribes of Malinor led to the formation of the kingdom from the newly settled western frontier. A policy of expansion, colonization and forced conversion followed that would establish Kaedrin in the annals of history as a quasi-military settler state. In 1420, he abdicated his throne with the Exodus, with the gentryman Edmond Brunswick (St. Edmond) becoming elected Grand Master. As he was of too low birth to accede to the throne in proper, the title of King of Kaedrin reverted to William I, who was Holy Orenian Emperor. FOOTNOTE: Later, around c. 1426, the Emperor would be forced to grant the lands of Kaedrin and the west to the King of the Harrenites, Lachlan Mor Elendil, which would precipitate the Harrenite War. The defeat of the Harrenites in this conflict by Prophet Sigismund and his Karovic heirs would result in their adoption of the style of ‘King of Kaedrin’, until the assassination of Francis the Martyr in 1456. THE THIRD EMPIRE (1456 - 1467) The Kingdom of Kaedrin was restored, in part, in 1456, when Peter the First returned thirty-six years after the catastrophic Exodus to claim the title of Holy Orenian Emperor in the chaos that followed King Francis’ assassination in 1456. HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, St. Peter I of the House of Chivay (2nd. r. 1456 - 1462) With the help of his nephew, Robert, and Imperial Fieldmarshal, Vibius Hanseticus de Sola, Peter cowed the quarrelsome nobility of the era, returning to the throne of Kaedrin while serving concurrently as Holy Orenian Emperor. This ushered in the Third Empire, bringing about a new age of human domination over the world with the construction of the cities of Kaldonia, Tempum and finally Petrus. Peter’s reign as Holy Orenian Emperor would reign victorious over the nonhumans who engaged him in war, falling each and every time, with those enemies he had within the Empire cowed by his domineering, charismatic presence. Already a venerable man of 96 by the time of his second ascension, Peter I died in his sleep at the age of 102, having reigned for six golden years. HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, Robert I of the House of Chivay (r. 1462 - 1467) It was Peter’s nephew, Robert, who succeeded him to the throne of the Holy Orenian Empire and of Kaedrin. The son of Thomas Chivay and his half-elven bride, Robert’s status as a quadroon of elvish blood proved increasingly unpopular with his subjects, who had spent most of their lifetime fighting an eternal war against mendacious nonhuman polities. This was complicated by rumoured dalliances with pagan rituals in the deep woods of the Crownlands. When he made a humiliating peace with the nonhumans, the proverbial knives came out. Though he was not entirely uncharismatic, Robert did not bear the same imposing presence as his uncle, and after five years of rule was deposed by Vibius Hanseticus, who seized the capital city with the aid of the Duke of Ruska and Richard de Bar. FOOTNOTE: The Duke of Ruska’s acclamation as Holy Orenian Emperor spelled the functional end of the Kingdom of Kaedrin as a political entity, leading to its absorption to the Imperial Crown. Successive rulers of humanity would continue to use the style, however, as an addendum upon their titles. THE OLD COMMONWEALTH (1518 - 1543) The Savoyard dynasty who ruled the Kingdom of Oren from 1498 to 1526 were descended primarily from St. Lucien, who was one of the founders of the Order of the White Rose. Having been raised on stories of the Order’s glory, in 1518 King Olivier, a known Kaedrenophile, undertook a plan to restore Kaedrin as a subsidiary realm to guard the elven frontier. This realm was ruled by a noble of ducal rank entitled ‘magnate’, who was elected for life from among the local peers, and was known as the Commonwealth of Kaedrin, known to historians as the Old Commonwealth or the Savoyard Commonwealth. HIS GRACE, Cantonus Chivay (r. 1518 - 1543) To aid him in his plan, Olivier recruited one of the last living dynasts of the House of Chivay, Cantonus, as the inaugural Magnate of Kaedrin. With Foltest Helvets (The Count of Hengtfors), Adam de Gleveisen (The Count of Redmark) and later Ingrid de Wett (The Baroness of Wett) as his aristocratic subsidiaries, Cantonus directed the Kaedreni settlers towards loyalty to his royal benefactor in the catastrophic Duke’s War. A competent administrator, an almost omnipotent spymaster yet a most disagreeable man in his personal life, Cantonus developed a deadly rivalry with the commander-in-chief of the royalist forces, Augustus de Sola, which would later be exacerbated when the general was awarded with the former territories of rebellious Adria, which bordered his land. Though Cantonus was an initial supporter of John I, who came to the throne in 1526 with the demise of the Savoyard dynasty, the Emperor’s closeness to Augustus drove him away from court and into bitter obscurity. He died some time in 1543, and John I issued the Act of Merger which awarded the lands of Kaedrin to Augustus, who was by then Duke of Lorraine, thus spelling the end of the old Commonwealth. FOOTNOTE: The Act of Merger of 1543 merged the lands of the former Commonwealth into the estate of the Dukes of Lorraine, who from that point onward employed the style of Duke of Kaedrin in a form of real union. On paper, Kaedrin persisted under them, however, in practise it was dissolved as a polity, with no serious historians or chroniclers considering the Archduke of Lorraine to have ruled over a contiguous Kaedreni entity in this period. After the end of the Fifth Empire in 1595, most successive emperors claimed the title of King of Kaedrin. THE NEW COMMONWEALTH (1725 - 1760) The New Commonwealth was forged in the crucible of the Troubles, established in 1725 by Adrian Helvets, a descendant of the Count of Hengtfors, and the Captain-General of the Caer Bann Company, Richard de Reden, a fearsome condottiero. Rising from the ashes of the old Republic of Ves, to whom Kaedrin had a connection through Lorraine and Adria, this Commonwealth is a legal personal union between the two titles of King of Kaedrin and Grand Duke of Ves. The polity is intentionally modelled off a blend of the Order’s realm of yore, the Old Commonwealth and the Republic. It is a constitutional monarchy as well as a quasi-military state with specific democratic elements. HIS MAJESTY, Adrian I of the House of Helvets (r. 1725 - 1750) Born under the name of Helton Hadrian Helvets, Adrian I began his life as an exiled noble from an old, prestigious yet impoverished Kaedreni house. As a young adult he owned and operated a successful winery, however, with the War of Two Emperors it fell on hard times and so he emigrated to the Republic of Ves. Forging an alliance with the condottiero Richard de Reden and his Caer Bann Company of Kaedreni mercenaries, Adrian subverted the decaying republic and became undisputed sovereign of the territory, establishing in its wake the restored Commonwealth - a constitutional monarchy based on old Kaedreni principles. For four years, he enjoyed indisputable success as the foremost power in the Empire, however a controversial officer’s purge in 1729 amid rumours of a coup led to Count de Reden’s resignation and the slow diminishment of the realm in the ensuing decade. In 1740, Count de Reden was finally returned to the office of Governor-General with the king surrendering the royal prerogative to him under the terms of the Constitution. He died in consumption in 1750. [[with special thanks to @Esterlen, @duscur & @edelos for aiding in writing this post.]]
  17. The Bishop of Jorenus Anton Barclay and the Bishop of Ves Laurence A. Pruvia playing Chess, 1764 THE CASE FOR EVERARDINE TO RESTORE THE HARMONY OF US The first election of the Imperial House of Commons is looming which, like any election, fills our discourse with divisive rhetoric and finger pointing. Stakes have always pushed man against man, and this election will be no different. It unfortunately takes away from our ability to have a frank conversation: not between politician and voter, but between one Orenian to another. PAINTING THE PICTURE The election will happen with a turbulent backdrop. The controversies of Sigismund II’s missive, the Károly trial and his following assassination are still fresh in the minds of our society. In the meantime, new sources of tension pile on with the open dispute between the Kaedreni and the Friar clergy, the increased hostility between Josephite and Everardine and the animosity towards ever-encroaching monopolies in our day to day life. This is the painting that the people of Oren will have to pose in front of, as they cast their ballots and hope to find their interests represented. These days, I read missives with slight nervosity: asking myself if I am to become privy to a new crisis every envelope that I decide to open. The world of the pen and politics seems to be on fire, and at times I seem to forget about the world outside of it. It is in the few serene moments of companionship, such as hunting with House Helvets or playing chess with the Bishop of Haense: that I remind myself these hostilities don’t have to be norm. Building on this conclusion, I hope to present my case for the Evardine party to those willing to listen. Furthermore, I will not confine myself to the boundaries that propaganda and pamphlets set. The Josephites are not perfect, but neither are we. The argument that I wish to make is that we simply have a better vision for our Empire. Nothing more or less. A STRONG CLERGY BEYOND CLIENTELISM The Everardines are the most staunch Canonists, politically and personally. Unfortunately love for the faith is now woven into the radicalism of certain lobbies within God’s institution. When the Everdine seeks a stronger Canonist church: the Josephites and Helenites picture a rabid clientelist clique furthering their geopolitical interests. They picture crusades, ear clipping and northern conservatism: not a Church properly enshrined in imperial statecraft, each other’s interests in perfect harmony. Our brand is the latter: we wish to preserve the central role of the Holy Church of the Canon, so that we may cultivate a productive relationship between the Fidei Defensor and His Holiness the High Pontiff. A Church that can stand above the parties, and exert sufficient authority to unify mankind like it has historically done many times. Opposed to the radicals and seditious among the clergy: are the Josephites. They do not recognize this crucial role that the Church plays, and instead, entrusts the maintenance of mankind’s unity to faceless bureaucrat organizations and mandated functionaries. This is not grounded in reality because the common man is not acquainted with the government like he is with God. We all know the Archchancellor Simon Basrid, but do we know who he delegates his notary tasks to? Will this anonymous person truly be a player that can appeal to all parties and say: cease fighting, let us unite? The Everardines look at the historically revered figure that is the Pontiff and the Emperor, and entrusts him and His Imperial Majesty instead. An Everardine Empire is one that pragmatically and fairly renders the subjects of the Empire content. We are not ones to intervene and meddle with the self-determination of the Empire’s many cultures, but we will adhere to a zero tolerance policy towards sedition and division. The Church will be granted a place to help us with this. In return of ensuring that their influence and universality remains intact, we will expect that they refuse to tolerate those that seek to destroy humanity. A clergyman serving the seditious will be held accountable by them, as much as a citizen serving the heretical will be by us. AN ECONOMY FOR THE MANY, NOT THE FEW The Josephites enjoy an instant victory when it comes to the economy, because all the monopolists and treasury functionaries are Josephites. They see large numbers on their ledgers and automatically assume that the economy is doing well. They see stores in Helena everywhere, and conclude that commerce is healthy. But underneath that polish lies the exclusion of many Orenians from the economy, and unhealthy dependence of the government on a few individuals. The Everardines will protect small business and enterprises throughout the Empire: promoting commerce in the markets of Imperial subjects, while involving them in the Helenite market as well. Prices will be maintained at fair rates and goods will remain accessible to all willing merchants. We do not care for donors or the votes of monopolists: we serve the people first and foremost. Josephites are tempted to look down on old systems from the days of pure feudalism, thinking along the lines that all that is old is inherently bad. These old systems were carefully cultivated over decades within a society: altered to function in their culture and context. To weaken the aristocracy and the vested authorities of subjects and its peerage, is to weaken its ancient systems that brought stability and fairness to its people. It is why the Assembly of Ves worked differently from the Haeseni Duma, and why its successor still embraces that difference. It is because the lords and institutions of Kaedrin sought a different destiny for their people, than Haense did for theirs. To assume that a single size fits all is simply silly, and not a policy that the Everardines will entertain. A PEERAGE WITH PURPOSE A flagship ideological component of the Josephite party is steadily stripping the nobility from their seat at the table. In their stead, bureaucrats and the nouveau riche will carry on a torch the peerage had held for centuries. Our Empire has moved beyond the ancient formula of garnering troops, fighting in a war and obtaining a title. Nobility has taken up a more social role, being the custodians of historical cultures and lineages as they form the breathing continuation of mankind’s history. The people of Kaedrin respect House Helvets as much as the Haeseni respect Barbanovs: their families maintained an order in which their societies could thrive. A bureaucrat has no conscience like a noble has when it comes to history and destiny. They are not bound to have ancestors who sought to accomplish milestones that their offspring now pursue for them. They do not style themselves with the rites and titles that employ humans, and give them an identity and a natural order to prosper in. The Everardines recognize this importance and cherish it. We seek to empower the House of Lords because we understand that its inhabitants hold an invaluable role in Orenian society. We want to protect the nobility because we respect the many lineages that were rewarded for their leal service and significant contribution to their people. We do not believe that a Helenite entrepreneur can evoke the same cultural unity as Oren’s major houses, or that a bureaucrat can demand the same loyalty as history’s titans. The Josephites will not be allowed to disrupt this crucial order. Our party will dedicate itself to protect your importance, title and legacy. Because you and your ancestors deserved it.
  18. "Blessed be the stalwart custodians of mankind's ways" says Laurence, signing a Kaedreni cross.
  19. RESPONSE TO THE EPISTLE Dearly beloved, While it is honorable to find such vigilant defense of our clergy amongst us, we find it unfortunate that it has manifested itself in this particular fashion. We therefore felt that it was expedient to respond to your epistle seeking intervention from His Holiness. First and foremost, we wish to reaffirm that the clergy are subject to imperial law and its courts as much as mere citizens. The defendant Friar Boniface has, in the eyes of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin, broken laws and neglected his duties as mentioned in the subpoena. It is therefore within the right of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin to seek justice regarding their experienced infraction, and adhere to secular proceedings as is the norm with an Imperial subject. May we remind you that Krisztián Károly was also tried in a secular court, due to allegedly committing crimes in the city of Helena. Secondly, we wish to reaffirm that it is perfectly normal for the clergy to partake in secular organizations, such as the Imperial courts or government. We have a Cardinal that is Vice-Chancellor of Oren, a Supreme Court Justice or the Premier of Kaedrin. They often act, either directly or indirectly, in a fashion that affects men of the clergy as well. Should Hugo Wright resign when his government signs into law legislation that furthers secularization? Should Jasper de Sarkozy have resigned if he ruled Krisztián as guilty? Should now Cardinal Ves resign due to his role as attorney within his trial? Why must the clergy reside in a parallel Empire to the actual one: having no connection with the plane of existence that our congregation exists in? For it is these secular professions that one partakes in outside of the cloth, that grants the Church the necessary harmony and cooperation with the Empire: so that both can maintain strength and prosperity in ever changing times. Friar Boniface will face justice in secular courts, as he is brought to trial by an Imperial subject. To render participation of other clergymen as inappropriate, and demand a monopoly on justice for men of the cloth, is a mentality of radicalism unbecoming of our clerical intellectuals. To demand that His Holiness intervenes in a legitimate legal procedure is inappropriate. We therefore hope that the signatories of the Epistle see the light of reason and retract their troubling outcry. 20. An open letter would be send to Boniface (@ReveredOwl). “To Boniface, The Commonwealth of Kaedrin has not banished you. The people merely gave us a mandate to do so, meaning that we are allowed to by the people if we wish to. We have not yet enacted any legislation that restricts your entry, so your infringement is non-existent. Furthermore, you are not a member of the clergy. I wish to repeat: the Commonwealth of Kaedrin has not exiled you, but has been given permission by the people do so when it wants to. Please weep when something actually happens, baffoon. 24. A fatigued Cardinal stares into the mirror of his Kaedrin estate: words of Sir Frederick Armas haunting his mind. “Wig..” it would thunder in his head “Wear the wig!”. With trembling hands, his eyes locked onto the reflection of himself, he slowly placed the wig on top of his head, reaffirming to himself: “I am now ready to be seated in the House of Lords.. I think.”. Somewhere in Helena, Frederick Armas would look into the general direction of Kaedrin, and smile. Another man had just succumbed to his cultural influence.
