The men initially disliked the new mouth to feed, but eventually came to enjoy the young boy, who worked odd jobs around whenever the band set up camp. Some of the men even started showing him a bit of fighting as he grew older, and Demus loved to mimic them. This eventually evolved into formal training, and Demus excelled with his agility, taking the name 'Swift' for himself. Of course, growing up, Demus had nobody his age to interact with, and his social skills were lacking. When they were stopped at a village, a 16-year-old Demus quarraled with a local child and broke his arm. When the child's parent angrily went into the camp, the confrontation turned violent, and one of the men stabbed the parent in fright. He cried out, and the man who stabbed him quickly did so again, and again, and again until he stopped cyring out, but it was too late; people from the town were coming to investigate, and it wasn't long before they were full-on attacking the camp. As the mercenaries fled, Demus was seperated from the others, but he dared not turn back; he ran, and ran, and ran until he came to a great city across a moat, with a large drawbridge. This was Petrus, where he survived on the streets for the next few years, until he was developed enough to take work again as a mercenary, taking small contracts and building his skills. His primary concern with his life was his generally poor reputation, as he was recognized by some as affiliated with what was considered to be a bandit group. Hardening his resolve, Demus struck out, determined to become a powerful fighter and protect his honor, and he saw becoming a champion fighter as a way to accomplish this.
