  1. EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX Ruler: H.I.M. Emperor Adrian II Government: Imperial Constitutional Monarchy Population: ~ 20,929,392 NEXT 22,394,449 Allies: Galaharian League, Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick Trade Partners: Galaharian League, Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick, Kingdom of Helmedhi, Antigonids, Republic of Danwent, Hakkans, Princedoms of Volarucio, Aulem, House Blackmarrow, Trident, Kingdom of Numeria, Passans, Kingdom of Five, Symon, Eadni, Commonwealth of Ruhn Map of the Realm THE FORGE A typical day in Souvois. The Imperial City was frequented often by farmers, traders, merchants, craftsmen, nobles, and all. The city stood in stark contrast to the flat plains of golden wheat and infrequent patches of spare woods that surrounded Souvois for as far as the eye can see. Yet, at the forge, large billows of smoke protrude into the sky - clouds of black dissipating into the skies. Funneled out by large chimneys, the smoke had its origins in an endeavor in the city’s industrial district. A new contract was handed down directly frown the Crown, given to Cours Armory. Cours Armory was charged with a monumental task… one the executive had thought nearly impossible. What the Bourdelaise understood about energy manipulation and matter would have to be scrapped and altered down to the very core to complete this task. Returning military advisors and survivors of the Field of Tears have all reported the same thing. The Sun was a deadly weapon, more than just the ever-present Father it had been thought to have been. While indeed the Sun provided the warmth and light that allowed life to flourish and even survive… its gifts for the world could also be turned against its inhabitants. The Sun has oft scorched its blazing heat in times of drought, causing dehydration, famines, or even storms. Field of Tears veterans have suggested that the power of the Sun can be turned against our foes. The Hakkan mages laid waste to ranks of Swine and Karel in a flurry of meteors, solar beams, and radiation. Can this magic be manipulated? Can a physical weapon be forged which harnesses the Sun’s power… condenses it into a projectile? If this could be achieved, the potential lethality of the Black Army would skyrocket. Siege or field artillery, the concept was planned as light and portable. It was hoped that such a weapon would be versatile and able to be used by the common soldier. An ambitious plan, very much still within its infancy. Some might say that it was practically infeasible. Impossible, even. Yet, helping Cours Armory achieve this task were the Empire’s brightest Engineers and most learned Sourcerers. The development was a mix of magic and mundane. The Engineers and Sourcerers had their own separate ideas on how to tackle the issue, each group butting heads with one another and proving to be an impediment rather than helpful. Some incantations were involved, while special lenses were forged. Refraction and channeling. Frames were pieced together. The developers had near zero idea what they were doing. Yet, they threw their backs into it nonetheless. In the open air of the Royal Ordnance Yards, they tinkered and toiled away, achieving seemingly nothing more than putting some mirrors together. THE PROFLIGATE Though despite being the administrative hub of the Empire and seat of the Emperor himself, the Imperial Palace was often devoid of chatter and noise. Perhaps in a secluded dining room or in the gardens, members of the Imperial Family would entertain courtiers and guests. These were often lesser nobles and wards of the Greater Houses, who dwelled within the Imperial Palace. Often it was for selfish need, favor, and personal gain. Other times, people were invited to the Palace at the behest of a prince of princess. Hospitality was paramount in Bourdelaic society. Treat others how you’d like them to treat you. Be friendly and kind to strangers and give to the poor. That’s what was ingrained in the minds of the Bourdelaise since youth. Yet others, may take this hospitality to an extreme… Perched atop the immaculate throne was the spawn of the reigning Emperor Adrian II, Philip. A prince in his own right, afforded the status of heir to the Empire. His brother had died a premature death on the field of battle, fighting to defend believers across the Gulf. A noble cause. Rumors had returned to Bourdeleaux he had died a hero, and a literal of blaze of glory, chosen by the Bright One and imbued with his holy, fiery fury. They say he cut down vast swaths of men left and right, only being brought down by sheer weight of numbers. Adrian was his brother’s name, after his father. He was supposed to ascend the throne as the next in the line of Bourdelaic monarchs. Philip left much to be desired. He was nothing like his elder brother, much to the dismay of their father. Philip could barely hold a sword straight before shirking in fear. Instead of leading men on the front, Philip indulged himself. Drinking, debauchery, and the like. His father did all he could sort him out, though to no avail. Even now in his father’s absence he sat legs sprawled upon the Imperial throne, keeping eye upon an orgy that unfolded upon the Reception Chamber. His friends sat beside him, slouched, and fed grapes by attendants. Some even partook in the sinful activities. A cacophony of pleasure and moans, intertwined limbs, and flesh rubbing up against each other. Philip took a bite into his apple as a servant fanned him. A servant hurriedly entered the chamber, bowing greatly in the presence of the Prince, although taking severe discomfort in the debauchery beside him. “Your Highness, the Wolves, they’ve returned…” He groaned, waving off the messenger, “Ah yes, I’ll see to it.” he looked to his side, “Lord LaChance will see to it.” Lowering his tone, he spoke to his comrade. “Take a brigade, whatever you need.” The lordling rose, “Very well.” For the crown prince, that was the end of the issue… and as far as his concern extended. Rumors of the profligate prince often trickled down to the common folk. Though, they were never able to verify such claims. When the Palace Doors opened to the citizenry, it was Adrian that they often spoke and confided with. The Prince may be seen in the background, bored, having no interest in statecraft and politics. It had become quite clear that the Crown Prince had secluded himself with a close band of friends and allies. A near impenetrable inner circle, of the sons of the most elite of Bourdelaic society. A most concerning prospect for the future of Bourdeleaux. Though, time would tell how we would stack up against his predecessors when he inherited the throne… THE FAITHFUL In the Sky District, the Great Cathedral saw grand renovations. The Solar Church possessed vast amounts of money, as solidified into Bourdelaic society as the nobility. The structure jutted into the Sky, bringing the Bourdelaise ever closer to the Great Sun. It had a commanding view of the surrounding city, with the westwork being able to be seen from dozens of miles out. Yet now, there were plans in motion for even the impressive twin towers of the westwork to be dwarfed. A new spire was to be constructed. In concept, it was to dwarf all auxiliary structures of the Cathedral. At its peak it was to contain a celestium in which to study the stars and the aspects of the Bright One. That is, if the structure didn’t come to collapse upon itself. Masses and sermons continued as usual, with huge flocks of the city being seated within the grand nave. All that changed was the loud clangs of wood and metal being shaped together far above and out of sight. THE HOLOCAUST The aftermath of the march of the Black Army Bourdeleaux was founded through the conquest and subjugation of those around them. From the proto-tribes that inhabited the region to the neighboring countries on the borders of the realm. Now, the Black Army moved once more, with blessing from the Pontifex. Through bold decree, the Lithborn were declared enemies of the Bourdelaic state… their country to be dismantled and their forests torched. The forests were a monstrosity in the eyes of the Bourdelaise. Already had its tendrils spread into Naros. How long before the woods were stretched into the realms of civilized men. They could not wait for that day. Pre-emptive measures were necessary. Coming to the aid of the Volarucio, Bourdeleaux moved northwards to deal with the Green Plague once and for all. The Emperor had never waged such a campaign of destruction. The forest had to be burned, salted, and plowed. As far as they were concerned, the forest was their turf… an advantage that needed to be eliminated. Practically suffocating on ashes and particles, Adrian had thrown his cloak around his face. All around him a blazing inferno raged. As if Hell itself had been brought up to the surface. Forward was nothing more than smoke and flames. Yet behind him stood the largest host he had ever gathered, with a single goal in mind. With the Black Army at his back and his trusted commanders at his side, he felt the first solace he had since he and his men partook in this march. Deeper and deeper they ventured, headlong into the unknown. THE UNKNOWN The HIMS Prince Adrian somewhere off the coast of the Surukai. For a series of painful and arduous months, the crew of HIMS Prince Adrian traversed the ocean blue. Bourdelaic men were never accustomed to sailing, prefering to have their boots set upon solid ground. Yet, there was indeed a first time for everything. Brief encounters with the west left the Bourdelaise wondering what else could be out there? Having heard rumors a fabled continent; twin isles renowned in their beauty and bounty, the Crown knew they had to investigate. The Crown selected Sir Gregoire Dupuis for the task, a sailor, perhaps the best one Bourdeleaux has ever known. Even then, that was not saying much. Yet, he was honored to undertake this sacred task… to expand the influence of Bourdeleaux abroad. A noble cause, one which he may potentially be remembered for centuries to come. He never thought it would end. The wooden carrack rocked hard, left to right. The crashing sound of waves lapping against the hull had become monotonous. To break up the monotony, some of the deck hands sang shanties that reminded them of home. Sir Gregoire had little choice but to oblige them. He may as well partake and strengthen the bonds with his crew. Some countless weeks in, a spotter on the crow’s nest sounded, “Land ahead!” The crew stirred, most pushing to the railings to gaze upon these unknown lands. Densely forested, they were shrouded in mystery. Coming ashore, they discovered people before unknown to them. They regarded themselves as the Surukai, and came with skin in a tone before unseen. The crew marveled at the sight of them. Exchanged goods and refilled supplies. They were kind enough, having not attacked the Bourdelaise on sight. Though, perhaps the next time the ballistae swung into action, they would not be so fortunate. They spent some time here and bid the Surukai good fortunes. From them, they presumably heard more of the peoples of Surya. Rumors of monstrous elephants, lush jungles, a mirrored city, all trickled into their ears. They were aroused. Their interests peaked. Better yet, they believed it to be fairly close. It was a natural course for the crew of the HIMS Prince Adrian. Though, what most caught the attention of Sir Gregoire was their solar worshipping nature. What ideas could be exchanged, what knowledge and insight into their faith could be gathered? The potential was limitless. Even if the other faithful were poo skins... The air was filled with the sound of trodding boots, and clinking plate. The soldiers had with them in tow all their provisions, entrenching tools, weaponry, and armor. Quite the march with the quite the amount of luggage. Yet, the men of Bourdeleaux had always been accustomed to burden of campaign. The extra weight they threw upon their shoulders seemed to them no more than the weight of the tunics they worse on a day to day basis. Their armor glinted in the Sun, the black proving to be a stark contrast on this bright day. The scent of sea salt always lingered near as the Black Army was within spitting distance of the Barrier. Keeping pace with the lowly foot were several supply and war vessels, flying the runes of Galahar or the Sun of Bourdeleaux. The moods of the men were mixed, some ecstatic to do battle once more, others fearing the distance of the campaign. Nevertheless, they pushed onwards. The regimental fife and drum blared in the distance, as an officer galloped the length of the formation, no doubt relaying crucial information to a superior. The Black Army expected the worst. Though Bulgar was their intended foe, they expected the Herzakans to spring out in ambush at any time. Their time would come. But for now, Bourdeleaux’s sights were set elsewhere. Countless units marched in unison, each flying their own heraldry and arms. For what is ordinarily a pallet of gold and black, they were supplemented by the banners of the various noble houses, knights, and regiments. A true sight to see, putting even the most vibrant Bourdelaic festivals and celebrations to shame. Towards the front of the fabled formation were the famed heroes of 1st Brigade, 3rd Regiment, A Company - Alucard, Jonas, and Gawain. They were parallel to each other in the marching order, each heaving their own kit. “Soo…” began Alucard. Jonas scowled adjusting his bedroll to neatly fit between his torso and arm, marching all the while, “Listen, kid, you don’t need to do that.” “Do what?” Alucard questioned, “Looks to me I’m doing the same thin’ as you.” “Forget it.” Jonas shook his head, then resigned, “Was there something you wanted to say?” “As a matter of fact, I wanted to know if you guys’d written your wills?” “Why would we?” asked Gawain. Alucard coughed, “Well, in case-” “That’s coward talk.” interjected Jonas. “I don’t intend to die. Do you?” “Well, no..” “Good, then keep your mouth shut. You’d be doing us all a favor.” “Yeah, and the last thing we need is for you to start blabbering ‘bout how you left your sweetroll in the oven while we’re deep behind enemy lines.” said Gawain. Alucard scratched his neck, “Do I really talk that much?” “Yes.” to his surprise, was his section’s universal response. The word being echoed by a handful of other members of unit, otherwise not involved in the conversation. With that, Alucard piped down. 3. AVAR KHAGANATE RULER: IRRIK, KAGAN OF THE AVAR PEOPLES TRADE PARTNERS: Byzantium, Scirii, Vandals, Crimeans STANDING ALLIANCES: N/A The Kagan sat in prayer, knelt upon a simple throw carpet, sat upon his heels in traditional eastern fashion. His eyes were closed, the only noise emitted was the deep breath through his nostrils. Perhaps, he could be mistaken for a statue did his chest did not expand with each exhale. The room around him was devoid of any life, nor color. The chamber was a mess of brown, of simple construction. Before him was a small shrine to Tengri. It was nothing more than a potted tree with inscribings written or hung upon it. He resorted to this chamber often, the only time he felt truly at peace. In his mind, raced his thoughts of prayers. “Great Lord of the Eternal Blue Sky. Grant my brother and his riders fortune and vigor in battle. Let them return home unscathed. Let them strike fear into the hearts of their enemy…” He exhaled once more, then placing the palms of either of his hands together, and raising them to his face. At last, he opened his eyes to the world once more. Serenity. Calm. That was, until the trodding sound of footsteps could be heard down the length of his hall. He grunted of mere dissatisfaction, though did not turn to the sound of the soon to be visitor. Sooner than he expected, the prayer room door flung open, “Irrik! My brother!” Irrik turned and rose, surprised to see his brother’s return so quickly. “Senicas.” he smiled, opening his arms to wrap around his kin, “You’ve returned? I trust the campaign has gone well!” His brother returned the gesture, grinning a smile as bright as the sun. “Better than we could’ve hoped!” he exclaimed. Breaking from the embrace, he quickly tossed down a bag of gold at his feet, coin clanging and spreading to every corner of the prayer room. “And more, look.” Senicas turned, gesturing to two men who stood behind him at the doorway, carrying a large trunk in their hand. They promptly flung the hinge of the chest open and revealed riches galore. “By the Blue Sky…” Irrik murmured. “Yes, yes. And more to come..” “I can’t let you have all the glory without me, eh? Say, shall we ride together during the next raids… Like old times?” “I would be honored to ride by your side, my Kagan…” FINANCES & ACTIONS Treasury: 2,000, 3 grain Income: 16,600 + 30,000 additional from raids Total Available Funds: 48,600 10,000 Szeged is chosen as the de facto capital of the Avar Khaganate, personal territory of the Kagan. 4. AVAR KHAGANATE RULER: IRRIK, KAGAN OF THE AVAR PEOPLES TRADE PARTNERS: N/A STANDING ALLIANCES: N/A “What is your will, my Kagan?” For numerous decades now, the Pannonian Basin has been under the rules of the Avar peoples. Said to have been driven from their homeland, they have migrated westward and established a foothold upon central Europe. The Basin has proved to be a stronghold, as the Avar peoples have been hard to stamp out. The Avars are masters of horse, utilizing their steeds to descend upon their foes with lightning ferocity, loosing a torrential hail of arrows or impaling their foes upon the tip of their lance. The tribal confederation that is the Avar Khaganate is sometimes uneasy, though it has survived throughout the ages. The various chieftains swear loyalty to their Kagan, and in return are afforded numerous rights. This system has somewhat alleviated the administrative pressure that is the expanse of the Pannonian Basin. The new Kagan is practical and traditional. His rise was not met with challenge by the chieftains. Respectable enough, they willingly submitted to his rule. On his coronation, he called for the resumption of summer raids into the fertile surrounding lands. He calls forth many more riders, which subsequently flock to his banner, in search of loot and plunder. The Khaganate goes to battle once more. He had been penning letters and stamping seals for a good portion of the morning. Light shone in from the large, stained glass windows at his flank. Many birds sang their songs, and he could hear the laughs and cries of children playing beneath, in the courtyard. He had been pent up in here for too long, out of his element. He grew restless, words struggling to come to his head as he mindlessly scrawled upon scrolls to various benefactors and nobles of the state. He heaved a sigh, clasping his hands together and slunk into his chair. Opening again, he took note of his surroundings, a much needed break. He tapped the droplets of his quill into the inkwell and set it to rest. Opposite of him two sentries stood, emotionless and on guard, by the entrance. Surrounding him, were a series of books, scrolls, documents, manifests - all sorts, kept by his predecessors who sat where he was now. The study had brought him peace, and Adrian often retreated here in times of uncertainty, as if seeking the counsel of past Bourdelaic Emperors. Viewing himself largely self-made, he only stopped to think what his forefathers would’ve done on occasion. Beyond the quarters of the study, the sound of bounding footsteps echoed. They approached, louder, and closer, until stopping just shy of the entrance. A voice or two, a quiet exchange, as the door opened, and entered a familiar face. “Lord Theobald.” the Emperor smiled. “Your Imperial Majesty.” he snapped a salute, returning to ease shortly after. “I trust you are well.” “Ah yes, we got out of the forest and back home, well enough.” “Good, good. The situation there was most unfortunate. Though, I don’t hold it against you. I asked you to march into the unknown - a foreign land.” “Mhm. We were immediately immersed by forest, and our supply lines under constant threat, striking from the woods before silents peeling back. We were out of our element.” “I’m sure of that.” Adrian nods, “I have a new task for you, Theobald.” “Of course, sir. What is it?” “You’ll take our men north.” “North, sir?” “Yes. The time has come to take the war to the blight that is the hordes of Bulgar.” “That so? What’s happened since I’ve gone?” “Politik, my dear old friend. You’ll find that we are not alone in this fight… that Volarucio has been waging a war against the greenskin for some time now. And that the Galaharians among others have pledged aid to our mutual cause.” “Excellent, then.” “I suggest you grab a seat.” the Emperor gestured to the chair opposite, “I’m sure you already thought to have the Expeditionary Force recover, hm?” “Aye, sir. They’re being fed and strengthened as we speak.” “Good, I’ve all seen to it to raise an additional brigade for the northern campaign. Meanwhile, freeing up the east to act as a militarized frontier, with tracts of land giving to families of veterans, or fiefs to be given to loyal bannermen to the Imperial throne. In the Imperial City, the Souvesian College of Sourcery undergoes heavy renovation. They begin to dabble further with the blessings bestowed upon them by the Great Sun - in part, due to returning military advisors from the Field of Tears. In addition, quarters are expanded to accommodate additional adepts. Sir Florent Deliviere is appointed as Archmage. The College is promised substantial funding over the coming years. The practical applications of Solar Sourcery simply cannot be ignored, and would have potentially turned the tide for the Black Army on many occasions. Thus, the Emperor signs off on Deliviere’s Magus Auxilia Act of 1522, which mandates all Source-wielders serve within the Black Army. However, their conscription comes with the bonus of double-pay that of a footsoldier. Bourdeleaux makes no ambitious expansion efforts. Rather, the Empire moves to solidify their hold upon the border provinces. 6th and 7th Brigade are moved to the northern border with Herzaka, in anticipation of conflict with Bulgar. 7th Brigade is moved to the border of Danwent to prevent the turmoil of civil war from spewing over the Bourdelaic border. To ensure no mishap should happen again, a nonaggression pact is proposed to the Kingdom of Numeria with discussible tenure. A trade agreement is also proposed. In lieu of contemporary events, Emperor Adrian II calls together a council of nations, his main issue of contention - the aggression and unchecked expansion of the Lithborn Empire. Couriers ride or sail for the following nations, informing them of the council: the Galaharian League, the Kingdom of Numeria, the Antigonid Realm, the Herzaka, the House of Blackmarrow, and the Princedoms of Volarucio. After countless years of neglect, the Emperor and his Small Council, agree on a budget for the Bourdelaic Navy. A fleet of carracks is commissioned. Two keels are laid down at the Mondesport in Souvois for service; the HIMS Prince Adrian and the HIMS Ambre Clad. Meanwhile, the Bourdelaic Expeditionary Force swings southward, attempting crossing through Danwentii territory to return to Bourdeleaux. A declaration is given to all participants of the Civil War, that should any harm come to them, appropriate measures will be taken in response. The Carrow Garrison remains on standby on the border should they require aid. Lord Marshal Theobald of Onofrio returns with crucial knowledge and insight on the shortcomings of Bourdelaic logistics and supply lines. In addition, the Pontifex Maximus recognizes the piety and deeds of another one of its devout. Thus recognizing Charles of Talouse as Blessed Charles of Talouse. ____________________________________________________ CITIES Souvois (12 Barracks, 1 Port, 1 Place of Worship, 1 Temple, 1 Merchant’s Guild) Omignon (1 Port, 1 Merchant’s Guild) Vascogne (1 Port, 1 Merchant’s Guild) Senzia-by-the-Bay (1 Port, 1 Merchant’s Guild) Alingavia (1 Port) TOWNS Suttre-upon-the-Twins Vispard Adana Frigia Mennebor Coutrinia Rune Verendelia Plestiphor Touvres Benninbinges Epsomme Werdaux Serridinia Wetz Lusignan Gadebors Alingavia Talouse Lassus Vermont SETTLEMENTS Brevonnes Moraviscourt Venderval FARMLANDS - 69 - 17,250,000 SETTLEMENT CAP - 53 RECRUITMENT CAP - 8 ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 195,500g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 51k, Resources - 6k, Merchant Guilds - 12k, Trade Partners - 10k, Ports - 25k, Cities/Towns - 78k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 18,000g (Army), 7,000g (Veterancy) =25,000g. +2,500 from treasury [0g] Calling together nations for the Bulgar Question. No warm faces, smiles, nor praise.” A soldier murmured, doing his rounds about the streets of Mineria. Honore, another soldier of the Black Army, who accompanied this patrol, simply nodded. The city was eerily depopulated, with much of the inhabitants having fled. He was unsettled by the hostility of this alien country. Though a veteran of the Westfal and Carrow campaigns, Numeria was not quite what he had expected. The forest was a deathtrap, preying upon the unwary. At every turn, Numerian snakes slithered from their holes and probed the Black Army. Under constant surveillance, it seemed none could rest easily. For now, High Command deliberated among themselves which elements would remain behind to act as Mineria’s garrison. Proud as they were, no officer or soldier wanted to cower behind the safety of fortified walls while his brothers claimed honor and glory in the name of Bourdeleaux. For the meantime, Honore’s unit was attached to the security of Mineria. Honore made steady and contrived strides as he walked Mineria’s streets with his fellow soldiers. He had his halberd propped upon his right shoulder, with his other arm swinging forth ever so gently. His armor could perhaps do with a little polish. Though, seemingly he never found the opportunity to. To his side, he heard the sound of a mother bickering with their children. He turned, curious. To his dismay, he was only met with scorn, as their mother quickly ushered her children away from the Black men. He heaved a breath, clicked his tongue, then deciding to flip the visor of his sallet down. If they desired to not see his face, then he would oblige. Turning to the other end of his street, he took notice of another Bourdelaic patrol, coming from the opposite direction. A man upon horse led a group of some five men. They appeared to be in good spirits enough. Two of them broke off from the patrol, which then froze. They approached a street vendor, attempting to barter with a local. Perhaps, attempting to get some real food after who knows how long. Perhaps there was hope for the Numerians to be brought into the fold. Perhaps not. Honore was told that the captive Numerians had unbreakable loyalty to their king. He had heard many stories about their king, and held genuine curiosity. Though no more than a lowly footsoldier, he wished to look upon him for but a second. Aemyr the Mad they called him. Pah. “I doubt he could live up to such a moniker.” “Pardon, Honore?” came the voice beside him. It seemed he had spoken aloud. The men in the vicinity having heard his thoughts. “N-nothin’, forget about it.” Honore dismissed the issue, now putting more effort into his strides, “Business as usual. Let’s just get back to the garrison, and get a hot meal, alright?” “Yeah, alright.” said his companion, looking over his shoulder. “Cheer up, Honore. Heard rumor that the Colonel had secured our transfer to the frontline!” “Praise the Sun.” Honore whispered. “Can’t wait to get out of this hellhole.” ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 62 15,5000,000 Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church, Port, Barracks (9) Omignon - Merchant’s Guild, Port Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild, Port Towns/Settlements: Suttre-upon-the-Twins Senzia-by-the-Bay Vispard Adana Frigia Mennebor Coutrinia Rune Verendelia Plestiphor Touvres Benninbinges Epsomme Werdaux Serridinia Wetz Lusignan Others to be named Army: ~50,000 personnel Army Roster: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uz7RhOXZ31mOyTUpTkdSSq2LA6RIsM_hhQw2GFjNCvk/edit?usp=sharing Navy: N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 162,500g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 43.5k, Resources - 6k, Merchant Guilds - 12k, Trade Partners - 10k, Ports - 15k, Cities/Towns - 63k, Incoming Caravels - 1k, Manufactories - 1k) Upkeep: 16,000g (Army), 10,000g (Veterancy) =26,000g. +50,000 [0g] Gadebors and Alingavia become towns! A grand empire would be forged at the expense of others. There was no turning back. And as the Black Army crossed, it had become all too evident that there was no path backwards. We could only go forward. The trek through the mountains was a harrowing journey, filled with loss and despair. The biting cold and unforgiving nature of the unstable passed caused many a soul to perish. Cliff faces gave way and showered rock and debris upon the column, or at other times an unlucky soul step foot upon the wrong stone and slid or fell to his doom. ‘Oft times, there was little to be done as the mountain claimed their lives. Wherever possible, man helped another. No man left behind, as they say. Indeed, a most trying time for the Black Army. Against my better instinct, I pen this from atop my horse. I should take more care, for the Roots prey upon the unwary. Wherever possible, our men are put to proper burial. There is no time nor means for the bodies to be brought home. As far back as the eye can see, the Black Legions march through the narrow paths. It is simply infeasible. As inhospitable as the Roots are, what they are abundant in, is rocks. Thus, much of the makeshift graves were constructions of nothing more than stones stacked upon one another. Forever, shall they remain here in their lithic tombs, memorialized as those brave souls who gave their lives for the Bourdelaic dream. With no doubt, His Imperial Majesty, will seek to refine these shoddy paths into a proper highway. In no time, Numeria shall fold. And when they do, the Roots will be a fine divide between the East and West of the Empire, one that ought to be shortened. But until then, we’ve a war to win. May the Great Sun light our path. - 4th of Metar’s Gift - It is now the month of Metar’s Gift. Who knows what that could potentially hold in store for our campaign? Regardless, we have surmounted the great barrier that is the Roots of the World. The crossing did not end in complete disaster. Remarkably, we were able to transport most of our men and supplies with minimal hiccups. Though the loss of men was regrettable, what will prove enormously to our detriment will be the lack of cavalry. Cavalry was low as it was. Now, a sizable portion had been lost to the Roots. In terms of doctrine, there will be need for improvisation. The lands beyond the Roots are… underwhelming, to say the least. A vast forest encompasses much of Numeria, which we had now found ourselves amongst. It is a hostile land, for I feel every turn I make, I am under scrutiny by prying eyes. Our incursion is no secret. The Numerians know of our arrival. We must seize the initiative if we are to have any chance of survival. There will be no retreat. We go forwards, by the guidance of God and Emperor. A brief respite is all we had, until the order was once again given to get moving. The scouts had returned with intelligence. Perhaps, there was a way out of this ploughing forest. ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 56 - 14,000,000 Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church, Port, Barracks (9) Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns/Settlements: Suttre-upon-the-Twins Senzia-by-the-Bay Vispard Adana Frigia Mennebor Coutrinia Rune Verendelia Plestiphor Touvres Benninbinges Epsomme Werdaux Serridinia Wetz Lusignan Army: ~52,000 personnel Army Roster: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uz7RhOXZ31mOyTUpTkdSSq2LA6RIsM_hhQw2GFjNCvk/edit?usp=sharing Navy: N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 128,500g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 40.5k, Resources - 6k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade Partners - 6k, Ports - 3k, Cities/Towns - 54k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 18,000g (Army), 10,000g (Veterancy) = 28,000g. +700g +3,000 from winnings [15,000g] Constructing 3 Farmlands [10,000g] Constructing 2 Settlements [28,000g] Constructing 4 Trading Companies [30,000g] Constructing Port in Vascogne and Omignon [0g] Montfort and Payens become towns! It has been sometime since we have last spoke. Your husband assures me you have been a wondrous wife, though what father would I be did I not check in myself. You should travel back the Imperial City whenever you have the chance. I’m sure you’d find the renovations to the Gardens, quite to your liking. That, and your Mother would love to see your face once more. I worry for her. She has taken the death of your brother far harder than I’d ever have imagined. Perhaps it’d mean all that much if one of her children were to return to her embrace. To Crown Prince Philip, My son. I know you never expected in your lifetime to be thrust into this position. But now, more than ever must you take charge of your own actions. A new order is rising in Naros, and Bourdeleaux seeks to be top among the pecking order. I know you were never fond of playing soldier as a boy, but I beseech that spend time among my general staff and advisors, for they will one day be yours. Regardless, I entrust the Imperial City to your hands. It is that time of year where I must venture to Carrow and ensure that all has not fallen to ****. I’m sure you understand. With that aside, try not to get too drunk and do not invite those whores into my throne room. To the Lord Theobold of Onofrio, My longtime friend and ally. I hope you are in good health and the men be in high spirits. It pains me that I cannot venture past Roots of the World with you. Yet, there is important work that needs to be done back in the Heartlands. Bureaucracy and land management - the Siege of Carrow, which still must be dealt with. Nevertheless, while I take care of business in the west, I expect great things from you in the East. Vast, new lands ripe for the taking. Potential converts to the Faith, and sprawling cities with vast wealth I’d reckon. There is no other man that I trust than to fulfill our destiny than you. Truly it inspires me how many freemen enlist for the Great Cause, all of whom will be sent eastbound at the turn of the year. You’ll have all the resources you’ll need. I’ve seen to it personally. With this blank check, I expect to hear of great things in the coming years. And as for the matter of the so-called Symon Empire… Give them no ground and do not falter in their presence. As vast as they may be, they have thus far faltered in their campaign against Numeria. The easterners are weak.., riddled by years of strife and warfare. Sealed off in the west, surrounded by a plethora of ancient castles and immense mountains, West Naros was largely shielded from the feuding Kingdoms. Yet this allowed the emergent state of Bourdeleaux to grow thus far unopposed, swiftly consolidating their power. With the Carrowlander resistance largely subdued, Imperator Adrian II turned his ambitions elsewhere - the East. The land in which the Sun rises. Perhaps it was destiny. Nevertheless, Emperor Adrian sought to capitalize on the turmoil. Under the pretense of bringing culture and religion to rabble of Naros had Adrian waged his wars of aggression upon his neighbors. Yet all knew better than to question the actions of the Crown. The Church certainly could not complain, as more and more were welcomed into the Sun’s embrace. Neither could the smiths who forged the plate upon the soldiers’ backs or the mining industry which subsequently boomed. The sons and brothers knew no better, believing themselves to be upholders of the mantle of responsibility. Adrian continued to count his blessings, as such a situation could not be more optimal. Rumors poured westward, trickling into the Imperial Palace. War between the so-called Symon Empire and the Kingdom of Numeria. He believed them to be war-torn and tattered, little more than specks to be mopped up. He knew what he must do. His men yearned to take battle once more, longing for adventure and comradery in arms. For too long had they cooped up near the Citadel at Carrow. The majority of the besieging force marched north, joining with elements from the Capital as they made for the Roots. A bold move for sure, one that may cost him everything, though Adrian was one to gamble. An ancient Bourdelaic proverb goes “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” THE ISSUE OF DEMOCRACY A further rumor to surface from the east was the rise of Democracy, a radical form of governance which shook the very foundations upon which Naros was founded - which called for a government elected by and for the people. Unacceptable! The people knew not what was good for them. They were too near-sighted and possessed by selfish and blind desires. Power had to be kept away from the people at all cost. Any democratic movements were heavily repressed. Any who spoke aloud against the Bourdelaic establishment were rounded up and ‘reeducated’. This had set the framework for the Imperial Secret Police, which dealt with internal strife and political dissidents and sought out threats before they had even surfaced. Under no circumstance would a democratic foothold be established in Bourdeleaux, with all members swearing loyalty directly to the Emperor. ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 49 - 12,250,000 Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church, Port, Barracks (6) Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns/Settlements: Suttre-upon-the-Twins Senzia-by-the-Bay Vispard Adana Frigia Mennebor Coutrinia Rune Verendelia Plestiphor Touvres Benninbinges Epsomme Werdaux Army: ~25,000 personnel Army Roster: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uz7RhOXZ31mOyTUpTkdSSq2LA6RIsM_hhQw2GFjNCvk/edit?usp=sharing Navy: N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 112,000g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 36k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 9k, Cities/Towns - 45k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 8,000g (Army), 9,000g (Veterancy) = 17,000g. +5,700 [0g] Scouts are sent forward to probe the Roots of the World. It was hastily constructed, though would serve as the anchoring point for the new frontier that the Empire would continue to push outwards. Bourdeleaux’s ambitions were great, but came at the expense of sovereign nations. They justified this to themselves as they told themselves that they were leading these stray souls to salvation. Yet now, the realm of Bourdeleaux bordered that of the Herzaka, a nation of nomadic horseman who knew no boundaries? How would they respect Bourdeleaux’s rightful claim, if at all? Their warning was ominous, though their point had been made. Clearly, the Herzakans did not take well to the Bourdelaic presence encroaching upon their lands. A single red arrow, shot by some five riders who mysteriously disappeared. Whether it was a threat or a warning, the Black Army mobilized to protect the settlers who had just begun to establish themselves within the region. Fast moving Cavalry and Infantry was peeled away from the Carrow Siege and stationed to the Northeast. No chances would be taken on the frontier. Caltrops, stakes, and barricades were to be erected in a timely fashion. Rumors of these horse lords spread far and wide. The Black Army soldiers were anxious, having never yet met such a foe. Spears pointed outwards and bows at the ready, they awaited any movement on the horizon. ____________________________________________________ Carrow Citadel The siege was as unmoving as ever. Camp life was monotonous, and there was no attempt from the Carrow defenders to break out - at least, that they knew of. It was perhaps that promise that stopped many men from deserting out of boredom. The Black Army was used to waging quick and decisive campaigns, and had not once expected to meet such an insurmountable fortress. Yet, their discipline held true. Many had to resort to creating their own means of entertainment. However, the bonds with one another were as strong as the armor they wore upon their backs. It was their only hope that they could live long enough to see the Siege through to its end. Unbeknownst to the common footsoldier, key intelligence had reached the ears of the Master of Troops. And now, His Imperial Majesty’s finest - the Special Tactics Group were now deployed to investigate. An opportunity had arisen, begging to be exploited. ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 46 - 11,500,000 Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church, Port, Barracks (3), Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns: Manufactories - N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 103,000g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 33k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 9k, Cities/Towns - 39k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 8,000g (Army), 5,000g (Veterancy) = 13,000g. +6,700 [15,000g] Constructing 3 Farms [10,000g] Constructing 2 Settlements [0g] Upgrading Settlements to Towns! A child sat alone in the study of his Lord’s keep. He appeared fixated on a tome which lay in his lap. It was a an aged book, though showed extravagance, crafted from red velvet and fine parchment. He was consumed, eyes prying between the lines of which he read. Beside him was a towering knight, clad head to toe in his black plate - though, unhelmed. The child pointed to the right page, which shown an illustration of a certain coat of arms. A shield bearing two golden towers, connected by a low running bridge with the Sun on the horizon. “The House of Therevault.” “By God…” the Knight said, “Completely wrong. How can you confuse the House of Therevault with the House of Suttre. Are you even reading or glancing at the pretty pictures?” “Apologies, Sir Chilfroy.” the young page said, “I promise I am. There’s just… so many. It’s hard to remember/” The Knight laid his steel-clad hand upon the boy’s shoulder, consoling him, “Fret not, for I know. When I squired to the previous Knight-Commander Sir Massone the Exuberant, he would not let me leave the libraries ‘til I memorized every word ‘pon this book.” The boy nodded. “Here, you can make this up. Get this right, and we’ll head to today’s practice and sparring.” The boy smiled, “Okay.” “Right.” said the Knight, “What is the motto of the House of Therevault?” The page paused, consumed in thought, digging to the farthest reaches of his memory. “Uh… is it… er… I know this - Our resolve is tempered?” “Ah!” the Knight exclaimed, mussing the page’s hair, “Perhaps you’re not so useless after all. Come, meet me in the courtyard when you’re ready. And bring steel.” Bourdeleaux’s future lay within their youth, inspired by their elders and the tales of greatness spouted by the faith. Every expense possible was spared to prepare brave for the fight that lay ahead. All signs pointed to ‘the Darkness’, a vague, supernatural entity which opposed the forces of Light. None, fully comprehended it. As such, it was used as a fear tactic, both by the faith and by parents to bring their children in line. In all, they were raised with the notion of combating it someday. The day would come where every man and woman would need to fight it. Naturally, they would seek to be prepared for this incursion. -- Through the past years, Bourdeleaux’s armed forces had taking a substantial hit - from the Hakkans campaign to the assault upon Carrow. This created a situation which needed to be rectified. More and more bodies would need to be drafted into the ranks. Men from throughout the Empire were drawn to serve in the Army. The next few years would undoubtedly see an increase in personnel. -- As national and regimental pride have increased, so has inter-unit animosity among His Imperial Majesty’s Armed Forces. Initially beginning during the monotony of camp life at the Siege of Carrow, what was once banter has now turned into conflict between the Bourdelaic ranks. But these weren’t just men from the rank and file. They were among the Empire’s most elite troops, who had grown hostile to each other. Whether that would become a hindrance to the Empire’s campaigns would be unknown, and was doubted from all reaches. The notorious Black Bastards who had served with distinction in the Carrow War, and longtime household guard of the Phoenix Brigade were at odds. With the death of the late Crown Prince Adrian, the Black Bastards had made the claim that were they on the Field of Tears, that the battle would’ve had a far different result. Meant to incite or not, the honor of the Phoenix Guard was challenged. A confrontation had ensued in the middle of the camp, though was dispersed by senior members of either faction who quickly moved to reprimand their subordinates. A duel between two Black Army soldiers. The Black Bastards, renowned for their shock infantry tactics and use of great two-handed weapons, had shouted various obscenities regarding the incompetence of the Phoenix Guard and that the old guard should be cast aside for the new. Naturally, it would be quite upsetting to an individual who has dedicated his whole life to the preservation and protection of the Imperial Family. A fine divide had been created and a line in the sand drawn. The Guardsmen and the Black Bastards Battalion kept to themselves, seldom inclining to physical confrontation. Merely, they cast scornful glances across the camp and made their banter just audible enough for it to be heard. A depiction of a Black Bastard infantryman after the Battle of Carrow Fields Yet after that sole incident, there was no fight since. They were members of the Imperial Army, owing allegiance to Empire and Emperor before all. Engaging in petty squabble would detract from their ability to adhere to their sacred oath. Childish as it may be, there were several underlying issues afoot. He rolled to his side, only to find himself wincing in pain as his arm had become so singed in the battle. A mess of charred flesh; skin near indiscernible. He could only hope that he would not develop gangrene. Should the Great Sun will it, he will make it out of the battle with an arm in tact. Otherwise, he would be out of his profession. I shall survive, I shall perservere, he thought to himself. The Great Sun shall be my guardian. And indeed it was. For some time, the Sun’s faithful had begun to worry that their faith had gone unnoticed. As if a disappointed father had turned his cheek. Yet this day, the Sun’s faithful had been rewarded and selected. The Heavens watched in awe as a battle of before unseen proportions unfolded in the fields between Karel and Hakkan. Nearly ninety thousand souls lined up in battle, with the Gods as their witness. Hopelessly outnumbered, the Coalition forces bled, were torn to pieces, and fled the field. Yet, it was not before a number had been inflicted upon the Swinemen and the Karellians. Yes, nearly half of the invading army had been slain or incinerated in the carnage. The great magi of Hakkan had shown truly what boons the Great Sun had in store, only waiting to be harnessed. Though, what struck the man was the last stand of Crown Prince Adrian. Though, he had been slain in battle and was indeed a tremendous loss for the Empire, he had went out in a blaze of glory, a way that every Bourdelaic man could hope to pass in. An embodiment of purity, engulfed in flame, and wielding a blazing sword, the Great Sun had recognized his heroic sacrifice. He stood, among twenty good men, cut off from friendly lines. They fought to the last, claiming many a Karel lives in the process. At last, our Great God has taken notice. At last, we know our prayers fall not upon deaf ears. All doubt had been erased in the minds present. For the Crown Prince’s heart of fire had been witnessed all around the battlefield. In time, the news would travel - of his sacrifice and his fall, eventually reaching the ears of the Emperor. — And as the news reached the ears of the Emperor, he was struck in grief, nearly collapsed. Tears welling in his eyes, he slammed a clenched fish upon his dresser, sending many contents onto the ground. His son, his flesh in and blood, slain in foreign lands. He gritted his teeth, and was warmed by the embrace of his wife, who attempted to comfort him as well as she read the letter. “The price we pay.” He said, “He died as a hero, chosen by God and selected as his mortal embodiment.” He gritted his teeth as he spoke, “Your death will not be in vain.” He vowed. ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 40 Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns: Too many to count Manufactories - N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 86,500g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 28.5k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 6k, Cities/Towns - 30k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 6,000g (Army), 5,000 (Veterancy) = 11,000g. +700 from tourney winnings +5,000 from Galaharian gift [0g] Settlement upgraded to town. Emperor Adrian II Government: Imperial Constitutional Monarchy Population: ~ 9,168,350 Allies: N/A Trade Partners: Galaharian League, Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick, Kingdom of Helmedhi, Passans ____________________________________________________ The days surged forward with minimal progress. The Sun beat down upon the Bourdelaic camp. The men had to become quite creative in keeping themselves entertained. Some of the sang, others practiced art, while continued to hone their abilities with the blade. Some despaired, though were quickly silenced by their brethren. The rhythmic windup and shot of the trebuchets had been ingrained in the heads of all the soldiers present. Many now knew the layout of the camp better than their own home town or village. The Camp had become their life, in which many had forged new bonds of friendship in loyalty. This conflict would change the soldiers forever, those who lived. It was estimated that the final assault would claim immense life on either side. However, they had come so far and could not give up yet. For three years had the siege endured. Surely, the Carrows stores were nearing lows. Foraging parties were sent out regularly, plucking the surrounding countryside free of anything of value. Berries, grain, livestock, were all appropriated for the war effort. And from those who owned the farmsteads from which the soldiers’ reaped, they were compensated fairly for their generous donation. As the men of A and B Company, 1st Infantry Regiment entered a nearby village, one would forget that there was even a war going on. The village was quiet and peaceful, though teeming with activity. Farmers tended to their crops, while smiths worked their forges, and so on. The black-suited men entered the village in two columns, both parallel on opposite sides of a wagon train, towed by horses and guided by men of the logistics company. Leading up to the isolated village was a mere dirt path, now being trodden by well over three hundred souls simultaneously. Like a small, invading army did these elements of 1st Regiment confidently saunter in. However, that was nearly three years ago when the first Bourdelaic troops crossed the border. Now, for the most part, the average citizen of the Carrow Lords seemed indifferent to the new order. Much autonomy was retained, with Temak Kan acting as the governor of this newly incorporated province. The Black Army soldiers quickly dispersed throughout the village, asking graciously whatever they could spare. “This’ll do, yeah?” they would ask, presenting a small pouch of golden coinage to each toiling villager, moments before descending upon their food and goods like a swarm of locust. The All-Saints Cathedral at the top of Souvois The Emperor and his sons raced back to the capital with haste, all quickly becoming aware of the disapproval of their God. It was a problem that ought quickly be remedied, unless they quickly spiral into chaos and lose his guidance. For centuries had the Great One been the pinnacle of Bourdelaic belief and morals. They had seen themselves as the Father’s chosen people. To see now the Great Sun turn his back upon his children would be detrimental down to the very fabrics of Bourdelaic society. The Emperor fell prostrate before the Altar of the Eternal Fire, almost never before seen. Why has the Lord forsaken us? He pleaded. What would you have us do? Your humble servants mean no offense in our transgressions. We will redeem ourselves to be seen worthy in your eyes. Never again shall we stray from Your Divine Light. A sign; a clue. Set us upon the righteous path. Deliver us from evil. The eternal fire lapped at his brows, heat engulfing the Emperor where he knelt. Always in times of doubt, he referred to the Eternal Flame’s Brazier, which would often set him upon the correct course. Through this, the Emperor is said to commune with the Sun God himself. He calmed himself, slowing his heart rate as he forgot about all the world pains that troubled him. Having bled in his name and arm almost broken, he sat rhythmically breathing in and out. He stared blankly ahead but seemed to gaze upon emptiness. For you, I shall bring about resolution. The world is rife corruption in darkness. By my hand, which shall be expunged. Cast the sinners into your raging flames. And shield your followers, in your ever warm embrace. By my sword, I’ll end this war. Even if I should fall in the process. Perhaps then, you shall hear of our triumph. Adrian pressed his hands together in prayer, quickly lowering and splaying his hands flat upon the cold floor surface before rising. He repeated this gesture several times, and would spend several hours in the Cathedral for the slightest hint. He tread a gauntlet of burning coals, said to purify men of all their sins. He sought the wisdom of the Archbishop of Souvois. He made several sacrifices before the altars. And he vowed to spread the Solar Faith to all reaches of his Empire. There was no expense in terms of pleasing the Lord. ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 38 Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns: Manufactories - N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 82,000g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 27k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 6k, Cities/Towns - 27k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 7,000g (Army), 2,000 (Veterancy) = 9,000g +1,000g from treasury [23,000g] Loan payment to Galaharian League [10,000g] Construction of 2 Farmlands [5,000g] Construction of Settlement [10,000g] Recruitment of 1 Unit of T4 Elite Heavy Infantry [9,000g] Recruitment of 1 Unit of T4 Veteran Heavy Infantry [16,000g] Recruitment of 2 Unit of T4 Heavy Infantry

Emperor Adrian II Government: Imperial Constitutional Monarchy Population: ~ 8,568,551 Allies: N/A Trade Partners: Galaharian League, Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick, Kingdom of Helmedhi, Passans ____________________________________________________ THE SIEGE AT CARROW – YEAR 2 Black Army siege camp, stationed just outside the reaches of the Carrow Citadel, c. 1511 It had been nearly a year since the siege had began. Progress came slow, though as was expected. The Black Army faced perhaps the single most fortified structure on the face of Naros. A few leagues uphill from the Bourdelaic camp sat the imposing Citadel of Carrow. An ancient structure, guarding the vital mountain paths in southwest Naros. Constructed purely of black stone with durability and sheen before unknown, it appeared nearly insurmountable as it jutted into the early morning sky. Now, it stood as the last bastion of resistance to be rooted out by the men of Bourdeleaux. Occupied by the mad Lord Tarkanet, it was suspected that any peaceful abdication of the stronghold was unlikely. As Terakan fell in the melee, only Temak Kan remained to challenge the mad Lord’s reign. It remained a point of contention for many of soldiers in the camp, arguing whether or not it was even worth trading one Carrow Lord for another. “...If it were me, I’d have taken reprisals against the populace. As they’ve made us bleed, I would kindly return the favor.” said one soldier, clad in loose-fitting trousers and wrapped in a worn and lacerated black gambeson. Several cuts and slashes decorated his underarmor, and a large scar streaked vertically along the length of his right eye, masked by a black eyepatch - notably sporting a golden white sun upon it. Another soldier, huddled around the same hearth as he, called out from across the smoldering embers of last night’s fire, “Good thing you’re not in charge then, ‘innit, Jonas.” he scoffed. “They ought to pay, and you know it.” spat the grizzled soldier. “No, I don’t. Unlike you, I have empathy for fellow man, you cold bastard.” replied the second man, stripped of his plate and merely clad in his roughspun tunic, save for the sabatons fastened against his legs. Gawain was his name, a regular footman as many others. “You see…” chimed in a third, sat rear-end first on the dirt, “They say a good leader must inspire fear and love. Both must be present, ‘lest his reign be tumultuous and in turmoil.” he said, tossing an idle twig into the ashes. “Quite the philosopher, aren’t you, Alucard?” said Jonas, rolling his eyes. Indifferent, he turned his attention away from the assembled men towards one of the pitched tents. “Would’che look at tha’?” “Wha’?” questioned Gawain, craning his neck to gawk at whatever had caught Jonas’s attention. “It’s Verlaine.” said Jonas, pointing across the dirt path which separated A Company’s quarters from B Company’s. Gawain squinted across muddied and hoof-trodden road, eyeing Verlaine. Verlaine, an enormous, muscular man, stood just outside of his tent. He thrust his black helm atop his head, sliding his sallet down. From head to toe he was clad in his ebony plate. The distant man cracked his neck, dropping to a knee as he performed extensions of the leg. And as he felt that was sufficient, he sprung up and performed a series of jumping jacks and arm stretches. “Unusual. His unit’s not due for any action today.” Gawain commented. “Bastard likes to stay in tip-top shape, it seems. I’ve seen him sprint around the perimeter of the camp in full kit a hundred times, carrying his longsword wit’ ‘im. That madman. He makes it look like it’s nothing.” “God bless Verlaine!” cried Alucard, finishing the last of his ale. “Eh, what do you make of this, Captain Rimbault?” asked Jonas, turning to address a fourth man among the group. Jonas met the gaze of weary, tired man who sat upright upon a sawn log, one leg crossed over the other and a pipe in his mouth. He appeared to be reading a book, with covered by dirty leather and scrawled in black ink across yellow parchment. He lowered his book, and sighed, “Well, Decanus Jonas, I think Verlaine is a model soldier. You should all strive to be like him. Perhaps, if there were more of him this siege would be at an ends.” he replied, resuming his reading shortly after. “Oh look, there he goes!” chuckled Alucard. As the group of men looked over, Verlaine was in the midst of performing knee-raises, before taking off in a quick jog. “Careful not to stab anyone with that, Verlaine!” Gawain shouted after the man, cheering him off. Verlaine turned, offering Gawain a head nod as he flipped down his visor and began his daily routine, legs kicking into motion. “That man lives and breathes Bourdeleaux. Bourdeleaux flows through his veins!” said Gawain with pride. “Bloodileaux.” said Alucard. Jonas shook his head, “Alright, enough of that.” he coughed. A brief moment of silence ensured. Gawain merely prodded at the embers with a stick, until he uttered, “Eh, did you hear Marcela died?” “Tragic.” commented the Captain, consumed in his reading. “Who the bloody hell is Marcela? That your wench or somethin’?” asked Alucard. “Nae. It’s that minstrel singer that’s been taking Souvois by storm for the past few years.” replied Gawain, matter-of-factly. “Ah-” “Capitaine Rimbault.” interceded an unfamiliar voice, sharp and down to business. Rimbault set down his book, recognizing the voice. He immediately rose, standing to attention. “Yes, Colonel.” The other men looked over and naturally rose, standing to. “Your unit and B Company are going out on patrol today. Strap up. You leave in thirty minutes.” the man said, nodding as he departed to presumably attend his numerous ‘duties’. “Damn it.” the Captain muttered, sighing aloud, “Well, you heard the man, get ready. Get suited and meet me in the parade ground, you have twenty.” he said, closing his book and making for his own tent. “Aye, sir.” “Somebody better tell Verlaine before B Company leave without him.” chuckled Alucard. “With luck, he’ll still be doin’ laps by the time we return!” said Gawain. Black Army soldiers of J Company, 1st Regiment, on patrol the night prior in the woods surrounding Carrow, c. 1511 Elsewhere, at the center of camp, a detachment of Phoenix Guardsmen stood watch over the largest and ornate tent in the entirety of the camp; the Emperor’s. For some time, he remained secluded in his quarters, presumably recovering from his wounds. On either side of the entrance, they stood parallel, halberds held perpendicular to themselves. The left guardsman’s gaze began to wander. Over the camp’s horizon, he could make out the silhouette and frame of the enormous trebuchet, the one that had been bombarding the Citadel for the past few weeks. Though a true feat of engineering, even that wasn’t enough to collapse the seemingly indestructible walls. The guardsman, who had been on watch for some time now, took pleasure in seeing the weapon reload and fire. Though it did not happen often, it was a sight to behold -- one that was met with resounding cheers from men throughout the camp as the helpless Carrow defenders received their beating. “Impressive, ‘innit, Odo.” said the second Phoenix Guard, motioning his chin towards the trebuchet. “Aye.” said the first man, now turning to stare down the tent aisle, where he could faintly make our and hear an infantry company drilling. They fine tuned their formation fighting, assuming different postures and sword guards in unison as the officer barked and the men obeyed. He admired the ethic of the Bourdelaic peoples, always aiming to improve themselves. “Look sharp.” said the second. Odo set his gaze straight once more, staring down two individuals who approached, backs to the Sun. “Sir Richard!” exclaimed the second guardsman. “Lothaire.” the Knight replied, smiling as the pair approached. “Who is it that you bring?” Lothaire questioned, furrowing his brows towards the stranger. “Perhaps the finest physician in the Empire, that’s who.” boasted Sir Richard, a decorated knight in his own right and personal advisor to the Emperor. He had a bear pelt wrapped around his shoulders, and various purity seals and gallantry awards were pinned upon his chest. He was to be trusted. “Ah, excellent! The Emperor would be joyed to see him.” The doctor bowed, “Pierre de Troyes. At your service.” he said, approaching the tent. Lothaire lowered his halberd to block the man’s path, and Odo followed suit, scolding the the doctor. “Not so fast. You’ll be subject to thorough search before entry.” stated Lothaire, stepping forward as the plates and various ends of his black armor clinked. “Of course. Of course.” the Doctor said, raising his arms and allowing himself to be searched. Nearby Phoenix Guardsmen looked on, amused at the sight of Lothaire giving Pierre a thorough pat down and asking him to strip various pieces of clothing. Odo, turned back to the tent entrance, peeling back the canvas flap and quietly telling a guard who held watch inside the Emperor’s quarters, “Tell the Emperor his physician his here to see him.” The interior guard nodded, and Odo let the flap loose, staring at the doctor once more, chuckling. “Is this necessary?” “Is that even a question?” Lothaire shook his head, turning out the man’s pockets. “Hm. No weapons. You’re good to go.” “No expense is spared to ensure the Emperor’s safety.” stated Sir Richard. “Right.” the doctor, bowed politely, finally being allowed inside the tent, held up for some ten-odd minutes. Odo seized the man by the arm, looking him deadset in the eye, “Make His Imperial Majesty well, God be with us.” At all times, the Emperor is protected by an Elite retinue of Phoenix Guard, known as the Noviquen Guard, and are senior members of the order. Many of the Noviquen Guard have the privilege of having the Emperor’s ear and are considered invaluable allies and even friends. ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 33 Farmlands Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns: Manufactories - N/A __________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 74,500g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 25.5k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 6k, Cities/Towns - 21k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 6,000g (Army), 5,000g (Veterancy) = 11,000g. He had appointed Count Theobold of Onofrio, trusted friend and Magister Militum, to oversee the siege in his stead. For now, the Emperor retired to the Imperial City. During the battle, his life had flashed before his eyes and he swore he had seen white as Terakan cut his way through flesh and steel in bloodlust. He had much to contemplate about. Should he consider himself lucky, graced by the protection of the Great Sun that he did not fall that day. Or should he mourn for the souls that fought in his name, especially the young Phoenix Guard soldier who took the killing blow for him, Alphonse. Though, he knew him not, he was an aspirant in the ranks of the Phoenix Guard and showed great promise. No, the Emperor could sulk no longer. He would spit upon his grave, had he continued to lock himself away and let his death be in vain. As all Bourdelaise are, they are the first to lay down their lives for a greater cause. Black Army soldiers moments after the Battle of Carrow And so he trudged from his bed, adorning himself in his Imperial regalia and battle armor. In his standing mirror, he stared at his own image. His cold, ice-blue eyes, met those of his reflection, as curly blonde locks protruded from beneath his gold, jewel-embedded circlet. Whatever semblance of youth he once possessed was stripped from him. Bags sat just below his eyes, and creases lined his forehead from end to end. He hadn’t shaved in months, the dedication from campaign directing all attention away from self to state. He was a statesman -- not a debaucherer or a drunk, like some of those preceded him. Though not concerned with his own legacy, he aimed to cement that of Bourdeleaux’s as a whole. With the Solar Church, the peoples of Bourdeleaux had been united behind one faith, and now were burdened to carry the torch. Now was the time to capitalize on this peace and stability at home, and turn the Bourdelaic spirit outwards. Sunset over the Imperial Palace, c. 1511 The Emperor now found himself in the open air that was one of the several palace gardens in Souvois. His boots tapped gently upon marbled stone at his feet. Flanking the numerous pathways were low lying hedges which tucked away various flowers and flora from all corners of the Empire. Towards the center of this courtyard wasa five-pointed fountain which rose to the height of two men, and was ornamented with the solar burst. Water trickled slowly from the center of this stone monument, and ran the lengths of the pathways and circled the entire perimeter. The fountain itself stood as a reminder of the Sun’s tears and how He weeps for his children who suffer in his absence. Yet, as the Emperor approached the Solar fountain, it was not sorrow that he felt. He knelt, as luminous rays shone through the interior of the Solar icon, projecting onto him. He was beholden before the might of the Great Sun, muttering his prayers with zealous conviction, before concluding, “What next will you have of me, Lord of Light?” ____________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 18 Farmlands Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns: Suttre-upon-the-Twins Senzia-by-the-Bay Vispard Adana Frigia Mennebor Factories: N/A ____________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 70,000g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 24k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 6k, Cities/Towns - 18k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 6,000g (Army), 5,000g (Veterancy) = 11,000g. +60,000 loan from Galaharian League +1,000 gold stored Available: 113,000g [5,000g] Construction of Settlement [70,000] Construction of 15 Farmlands [27,000] Construction of 3 Trebuchets; 1 is Large [12,000] Construction of 6 Siege Towers [1,000g] An expedition is mounted to the mountains bordering the Aulem Peninsula. 21. E PLURIBUS UNUM UNITED SYNDICATES OF AMERICA All across the country, workers rose to the cries of solidarity and revolution. During the aftermath of the Great Depression, many Americans had become disillusioned with the capitalist democracy and the failings of the Republicans and Democrats to deal with it. It was a system wrought with corruption and built upon the backs and toil of the worker. Through contact with German socialists and incorporating the ideologies of Lenin, Reed returned to America and championed the cause of the Unions, most notably the International Workers of the World, which he had already been a member of. Through this organization, the United Syndicates took form. Eventually he was propped up as the poster boy of the Socialist Party of America, promising the whole of America a bright path forward through comradery and cooperation. Reed was a hopeful on the presidential ballot. However, much of the political opposition claimed fraud and demanded a recount. Yet, no clear majority was had, and the decision was put to the House of Representatives, who were not so keen to elect an SPA candidate president. When Reed returned to Chicago, the seeds of sedition had been sowed. For the last time did the Federal government trounce upon the will of the people. All throughout the Iron Belt and the Northeast, Syndicalists took to the streets. Federal forces lost their grip throughout much of the area, with protests turning to shootouts on city streets. American workers take to the streets in defiance However, the realization that America had died only came when the District of Columbia had been stormed and seized by Syndicalist militias, putting Federal forces to rout. The petty skirmishes had devolved into all-out warfare, marking the beginning of the Second American Civil War. States wasted no time in declaring their allegiance, with the legislatures of the Midwest and Northeast declaring for the newfound provisional government. During this time, Reed took the reigns, though near unanimous selection by the Worker’s Congress. Now, the newfound state convened to restore order to the region and discuss social reforms with the freedom they now possessed. Though touting the cause of the working man, individuals within the United Syndicates devised their own solutions and ideologies on how to best do so. Though home to many former American socialist and syndicalist politicians, the United Syndicates hosts several minority parties championing causes such as totalism, anarchism, left-wing nationalism, Marxist-Leninism, mutualism, communism. However, the radicals held no meaningful presence in the Worker’s Congress as more moderate heads prevailed. A socialist democracy is enacted with American-modified Syndicalist aspects. During the turmoil, many shootouts broke out between radical militias or with police The Syndicates were fortunate, being able to wrestle control of the Northeast and New York City, and even the former American Capital with minimal struggle. However, they now were tasked with managing the home front, as well as fighting a two front war with Federalist and Southern forces. ACTIONS Perhaps to the dismay of the radicals advocating for totalism or anarchism, a more moderate coalition takes hold of the Syndicates, who champion the cause of social democracy and syndicalism with American characteristics. Though some radicals cry for the abolition of ‘wage slavery’, the system remains in place with no intention of replacing the U.S. Dollar. (Mod) A Central Command Structure is enacted for the Revolutionary Army with Maurice Rose as Chief of Staff. National Guards of seceding Syndicate states are the first integrated. They are armed with surplus Federal equipment and from plundered arsenals. (Mod) The Syndicates attempt to contact the Unions and Resistance Organizations in West Virginia, notably from the coal industry. They urge the coal workers to rise as the Syndicates gear for an offensive against the Southern secessionists. (Mod) Reed attempts to strike a deal with the founders and executives of the capitalist corporations and manufactories. They will be entitled to their private property and representation as long as they ensure the need of the working man are met; standard wage, 8-hour work days, safe working conditions, and recognition of the Unions. (Mod) The M2 Cavalry Car project at Rock Island Arsenal continues, aiming to reinvigorate the Syndicates’s armored corps. The Army Chief of Staff puts in a personal inquiry into mounting cannons onto these vehicles, as opposed to solely machine guns. Some 50 vehicles are ordered. (Mod) Arms Manufacturers are are dished out contracts to produce Browning Automatic Rifles and M1919s, to supplement the small arms arsenal of the Syndicates. Research and Development of the M1 Garand Project continues at Springfield Armory. (Mod)
  22. EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX Ruler: H.I.M. Emperor Adrian II Government: Imperial Constitutional Monarchy Population: ~ 6,864,754 Allies: Galaharian League, Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick Trade Partners: Galaharian League, Kingdom of Fyr-Darrick, Kingdom of Helmedhi, Passans Captain Sir Chilfroy Chauvet leading the Souvesian Skullcaps into battle during the Carrow Wars, c. 1510. The Emperor remembered it clearly, his life flashing before his eyes as the hulking Lord Terakan was bearing down upon him, cutting down any Bourdelaux man who stood in his way and casting them aside with ease. With a tremendous blow, he crushed the Emperor’s arm, leaving Adrian reeling in pain. In a bout of courage and loyalty, a member of the Imperial Guard, thrust himself in front of both Adrian and Terakan. Though, he was fatally wounded by Terakan and died where he stood, his lungs crushed through the sheer force of the man’s strike. However, his sacrifice, bought time for his Phoenix Guard comrades to respond. Much like a band of poachers hunting an elephant, it took many a men to bring him down. Though when he fell, it was sounded around the battlefield. Mounted Men-at-Arms of the 1st Cavalry Regiment wreak havoc in the Carrow left. All took notice, Bourdelaic, Carrow, and Galaharian alike. The man the Carrow thought invincible had been slain before their very eyes -- truly, what hope was there? At this event, many Carrow levy units turned tail and fled back to the Citadel. Meanwhile, the Black Army was left to lick their wounds. As the dust settled, the corpses and bodies of friend and foe alike were scattered across the plains. Indeed, it was a victory. However, Adrian had hoped that it would not have to come to this and the Carrow would submit at the sight of his army. He had to commend them for their bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. Though, was it instead stupidity and the command of some craven that sent the men of Carrow to the battlefield? A dramatization of the surrender of Lord Temak Kan at the outskirts of Carrow, c. 1510 Terakan lay dead at Adrian’s feet. Tarkanet, arguably the most vocal, aggressive, and senile during his visit to the Citadel was not to be found. No confirmation of his death could be had among the Bourdelaic soldiers. However, a Carrow Lord had managed to been taken alive. The young Lord Temak Kan, who had so valiantly led his Knights of Ogrun against the Black Army forces for some years now, the terror that lay in the dark and preyed upon the unwary. The Emperor was brought before the Lord Temak Kan, who knelt beside his wolf-stead, stroking it’s fur as it had been wounded by the stand of the League’s Men. Either wise or opportunistic, he had struck a deal with the Emperor -- that he will serve and govern Carrow in his stead, and aid in Tarkanet’s disposal. To this they shook, both agreeing to rid of the tyrant and see the peaceful assimilation of Carrow into the Empire. Temak merely cared for his people, and resistance had become futile -- his only condition was the safety of his people. Emperor Adrian cast his gaze once more across the battlefield. However, now he had been surrounded by many of the men who had fought by his side. Both the captured Carrow and the standing Bourdeleaux had been witness to the deal struck by the two men. The Emperor was worried and weak. Though he needed to seek treatment for his arm, he knew had to speak with the Lord Temak Kan urgently. He grunted in pain, as he straightened, ignoring the wound temporarily. What better time than to speak with them? “MY LOYAL SUBJECTS. SOLDIERS OF BLACK ARMY, HEED ME. GOD STANDS WITH US ON THIS DAY, SMILING UPON OUR VICTORY. HE HAVE TAKEN ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS THE COMPLETION OF HIS GRAND PLAN. DO NOT MOURN FOR THOSE WHO ARE FALLEN, AS TRULY THEY HAVE RECEIVED FAVOR IN THE EYES OF THE GREAT SUN. THEY HAVE ASCENDED BEYOND OUR MORTAL PLANE AND JOIN HIS WARM EMBRACE. IT IS A FATE WHICH EVENTUALLY BEFALLS ALL MEN PIOUS AND OF INTEGRITY. HOWEVER, THAT DAY HAS YET TO COME. FOR AS LONG AS WE DRAW BREATH, THE SUN SHALL LIGHT OUR PATH. WE WILL BE HIS INSTRUMENTS AND RETURN ORDER AND STABILITY TO THIS ACCURSED CONTINENT, FOR WE ARE HIS CHOSEN. IN HIS NAME, WE SHALL FORGE A GREAT EMPIRE, THE LIKES THE WORLD HAS NOT SEEN SINCE THE TIME OF SYMON. IN THE NAME OF THE GREAT SUN, AND IN THE NAME OF YOUR EMPEROR WE TAKE CARROW!” “AVE IMPERATOR.” cried a man, whose fire burned from within his heart. Not long after, one after another followed suit. A sea of men -- a black tide, joined in unison praising the efforts of their Emperor and God. To this, Adrian was relieved, long having doubted the morale of the men of his command. Though, as they shouted “Ave Imperator”, all doubt in his mind has subsided. One way or another, Carrow would fall. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ EMPIRE OF BOURDELEAUX INFO Farmlands - 14 Farmlands Cities: Souvois - Merchant’s Guild, Place of Worship, Church Omignon - Merchant’s Guild Vascogne - Merchant’s Guild Towns: Auxenvort Suttre-upon-the-Twins St-Villard-upon-the-Barrier Senzia-by-the-Bay Manufactories - N/A ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ FINANCES AND ACTIONS Income: 59,500g (Base - 3k, 6 Economy Pts - 6k, Pop - 19.5k, Resources - 3k, Merchant Guilds - 9k, Trade - 6k, Cities/Towns - 12k, Incoming Caravels - 1k) Upkeep: 5,000g (Army), 5,000g (Veterancy) = 10,000g. -3000g Wolf attack on northern frontier +2500 savings Available: 49,000g [9,000g] Loan payment to Galaharian League [5,000g] Construction of Settlement [20,000g] Construction of 4 Farmlands Stacks.
