Discord Name; You got it Desired State; California History of said State’s history, leadership, and government; California didn't have a history that dates back a long time like that of most other states. It had only become a state ten years earlier, when it was conquered from Mexico. The area had been settled before then by a mix of Mexicans and American pioneers, the latter group increased significantly since the start of the Californian Goldrush. While the Goldrush had lasted only seven years, it lefts it's mark on California. The territory had rapidly changed, becoming the first somewhat tamed part of the 'wild west’. Towns had sprung up everywhere and the land had started being developed, the American west coast was becoming civilized. While California had been ruled by a governor like any other U.S. state, this fell into questioning as the U.S. itself fell. There were other figures in California, they may not all have been as qualified, though they were sure more popular. One such figure was a certain Joshua Norton. A man from San Francisco who the citizens of the city had begun calling the Emperor of the United States. He lacked any significant backing, he was a businessman who'd gone poor and now lived on the poverty line, instead he made made himself Emperor and declared it to the San Francisco newspapers, who thought it'd make for a fun article. Immediatly it caught on and people started going along with it, calling Norton 'his majesty’ and the likes. Norton became so popular in fact, that he started getting some actual power and recognition. Not only were San Francisco toy stores selling Emperor Norton dolls, mister Norton was provided free public transport too, some people, who felt sympathy for Norton's impoverished lifestyle, even went as far as to donate money to him, calling it "Tax Revenue”. It didn't take long before Joshua Norton was perhaps the best known man in San Francisco and the surrounding region, and his rise to popularity came at exactly the right time, because when the United States fell, people started looking for a man to lead the newly independent California in the right direction. Thus, in 1861, the Federal Empire of California was founded, with a small senate as it's government and Joshua Norton as it's popular figurehead, the Emperor from San Francisco. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Early 1917 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC, January 31st, 1917 Charles Evans Hughes was the new president of the United States of America, with the Republican party back in power. Hughes wanted to blow a fresh wind into the US, he showed this primarily in his four year plan concept. This entailed a four year long plan, the length of his term, during which he promised to boost the economy, increase welfare and wealth and overall improve living conditions within the United States of America. The USA would once again isolate itself from the rest of the world, the City upon the Hill would distance itself from the valleys of chaos once more like it had done in the past and look inwards rather than outwards, growing ever stronger like the sleeping giant that it was, not to be awakened by the rest of the world. Of course this didn’t mean Hughes planned to close Heaven’s doors, he made clear during a summit in New York. He explained that he wished to instead boost immigration, stating: “If they’ve come knocking on Heaven’s door, it’s time we let them in.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- London, Greater London, Great Britain, February 12th, 1917 White House, Washington DC, U.S., February 11th, 1917 During the Great War, the United States of America had sold tremendous amounts of supplies and equipment to Great Britain for their war effort. Now that the war was over, American companies and the US government were calling for payday. The British, decent folk as always, readily obliged and paid off what they owed to the American manufacturers and the US government. To the latter they paid both in money as well as land. The United States were sold the British territories of Belize and Vancouver Island, as well as a sum of one-hundred million American dollars. In response to the good deal and proper handling of payment, President Hughes stated he looked forward to further cooperation with the British government in the future. Furthermore, the US government receives an additional fifty million American dollars from the German government as debt repayment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicago, Illinois, February 19th, 1917 Chicago, the biggest city in the area known as the Rust Belt or Manufacturing Belt, the part of the United States where the heavy industry was situated, was home to many of the factories that produced weapons for the British War Effort. President Hughes understood the economic importance of the Rust Belt and since the 150 million US dollars that the American government earned from selling weapons were produced in this area of the country, he saw it fit to directly invest these 150 million dollars, right into the Rust Belt. They would be used to further develop infrastructure and industry in that part of the country, as well as housing and living condition development. This was all to ensure a big economic boost in the Rust Belt over the course of Hughes’ Four Year Plan. Milwaukee, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, Lansing, Toledo and Pittsburgh would be the cities which were to gain the most from this investment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ellis Island, New York/New Jersey, March 5th, 1917 After the Great War, many Europeans saw their homes and countries wrecked. Many didn’t desire to live there no more and an increasing number of them were looking towards America. The US government felt a certain pressure of millions of possible immigrants coming to the nation. Hughes wanted to embrace this and even encourage it. Ellis Island would become THE designated spot for immigrants to first arrive in the States. The docks of the island were expanded just like the island itself where offices for the Bureau of Immigration and the Bureau of Naturalization were built to make sure the process of welcoming immigrants and extending citizenship was organized further. Additionally, the Bureau of Integration is founded, this bureau helps to teach new immigrants English for a cheap fee and also directs them into a variety of sections of the economy in case they want the Bureau to help them find a job. Furthermore, shipping from Europe to America with the purpose of transporting migrants to the US is subsidized, making the journey cheaper and thus more accessible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New York City Branche of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, New York City, New York, April 31st, 1916 Miss Anne-Beth Schuyler walked onto the tribune. “My dear sisters! Look around, look around, the revolution’s happening in New York!” “New York!” The gathering of thousands of suffragettes exclaimed, a sound that echoed between the buildings. “Look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now! History is happening in Manhattan and we just happen to be in the greatest city in the world!” “In the greatest city in the world!” The joined in. They had practiced this speech, every one of them. And in a few minutes, they were about to march through the major streets of Manhattan, putting down traffic in the economic centre of the United States. “As stated by one of our great founding fathers.. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal’. Last night’s new year’s eve party at the White House hadn’t been like other years, there was an overall mood of sadness amongst the attendants as Roosevelt had announced his stepping down as president, sticking around until twelve o'clock before being lead out by his doctor for a brief talk before heading to bed. The next morning, Hiram Johnson was officially inaugurated as the next president of the United States of America, only to stay around for a year, as he did announce, like all other prominent Progressives that they wouldn’t be running for president this year. Johnson said some nice words, both about Roosevelt, who stood by his side, as well as America itself, most remembered were his words about the world war: “May we stand unshaken, amidst a crash of worlds.” After the inauguration, Roosevelt agreed to speak to a few journalists, immediately being interviewed by one of the New York Times. “Mister Roosevelt, you said you were planning to live out the rest of your days in peace, but the general populace doesn’t expect you to, despite having TB, be sitting behind glass until your passing. Is this true?” Roosevelt made a sign of needing a moment, taking out a handkerchief to cough into, coughing up some blood. “Ahum.. cough cough that’s true I suppose.. I wish to cough see some o’ the world while I still can.. Cough cough cough.” The journalist nodded, giving him some time before asking his next question. “Where will you be going sir? And will we still hear from you?” “I plan on cough headin’ down south, the Andes mountains.. Cough cough. America -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- U.S. Army Recruitment Office, Fayetteville, North Carolina, April 28th, 1916 Fayetteville, North Carolina was suddenly a city that was in all the major American newspapers. Named after French nobleman Marquis de Lafayette who served as a major general in the American revolution, the town was made the center of a new recruitment drive for a military division with a similar name: The Lafayette Division of American Volunteers to fight in France. Newspapers tried to appeal to young men all across the country with lines like “Do you want to fight for freedom and friendship? Aid France in their hour of need like they did for us; join the Lafayette Volunteer Division now, and start your mission before the end of summer!” The first shipment of volunteers across the Atlantic was scheduled before christmas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic May 5th, 1916 In late April, the Dominican Republic’s Secretary of War, Desidero Arias, seized power in the country and overthrew the government. To protect the Democracy of the Dominican Republic, the United States sends an invasion force of 1800 marines as well as a sizeable portion of the navy, under the command of Admiral William B. Caperton and Vice Admiral Harry Knapp. The commanders positioned their fleet some ways in front of Santo Domingo, demanding for Desidero Arias to leave the city and hand himself over while having his militia of 1000 Dominicans surrender. If he were to refuse, Santo Domingo would receive a Naval Bombardment, and the US invasion force would go on land, decked out with the best equipment available, ready to take out the military dictatorship by force if needed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kingston, Territory of Jamaica, May 15th, 1916 It came as a huge suprise, though president Johnson quickly accepted it. Apparently, Theodore Roosevelt had been having talks with the British crown regarding a certain island in the Caribbean, and out of the blue, he called the American government from Peru, saying he would like to offer his old friend Hiram Johnson the island of Jamaica, as a parting gift from Roosevelt to the United States of America. President Johnson didn’t believe what he was hearing at first, though after a long phone call explaining it all, interrupted by oh so many coughing fits, Roosevelt managed to explain that he had managed to buy Jamaica off the British crown for 53 million US dollars of his own money, and that he now wished to give the island to the USA as his parting gift, his way of truly saying goodbye to the nation he loved, before setting off to spend the last of his days exploring the Andes mountains of southern America. Johnson thanked his old friend dearly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fuel Administration, Washington DC, June 31st, 1916 To further organize the army and it’s mobilization, as well as being an organization for nationwide projects, the Federal Fuel Administration is founded. It’s main goals include keeping a steady supply of coal, oil, petroleum and the likes, while it also introduces measures to decrease civilian fuel usage. For example, daylight savings gets introduced, giving people longer days in the summer months so they have to use less fuel for lighting. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guantanamo Bay, Guantanamo, Protectorate of Cuba, August 19th, 1916 In Guantanamo Bay, on the Protectorate of Cuba, a US military base is formed for the newly founded ‘Caribbean Division’. This division is to represent Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, letting citizens of these American dependencies join the US Army with men and boys from the same area, fighting together in the name of freedom, under the star spangled banner! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Oval Office, The White House, Washington DC, September 10th, 1916 On September 10th, 1916, the Jones Act was enacted by President Hiram Johnson, this was to both appease and further integrate the Caribbean territories of Puerto Rico, Cuba and Jamaica, as citizens of these territories that were born there and speak English, are given American citizenship. This means that any residents of these islands can go to the nearest post office, and fill out a form to ask for U.S. citizenship, this gets looked at by the local governance office and either approved or denied based on some research into the person’s background. Those with American citizenship can call themselves Americans and experience all the benefits of being one. Furthermore, each of the three islands gets a proper US National Bank. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roosevelt Expedition Camp, Andes Mountains, Peru, October 3rd, 1916 Theodore Roosevelt, his sons and their guide had taken their baggage off their horses and stood up from briefly sitting down for a drink. Roosevelt wheezed loudly before pointing at one of his sons. “Kermit.. cough cough cough… You, your brother and Javier.. Cough cough.. Go set up camp for the night… Wheeze I’ll take the ol’ winchester and see what I can find for dinner.. Cough cough” Kermit nodded before turning around to the other two to start giving directions, Roosevelt slowly climbed onto his horse called El Jefe, the boss. He’d ride off into the woods to hunt, the last time he’d be seem alive. The coughing fit lasted a while after he climbed off his horse, eventually he gathered himself and kneeled down to inspect what he saw. Bloodstains. All over the place, accompanied by deer tracks. He’d follow the tracks for a bit as they lead up the mountain. A foul stench filled his nostrils and suddenly, behind some bushes he came across a half eaten deer carcass. “Cough better than nothing..” He mumbled as he took out his hunting knife and started cutting off a big piece of meat. Then he heard it. A rustle in the bushes, followed by a growl. He immediately knew what it was; a cougar. He took a few steps back silently, hiding behind a tree as a cougar emerged from the bushes, sniffing the carcass. “Stay silent Theodore..” He thought. Right after that, a deep cough bursted out, and he ran. "I’ve found him, amigos!” Javier shouted to the two sons. They ran up the mountain to where Javier was and in the distance, covered in the sunlight of the morning, they saw their father, dead. He laid against a rock, staring off into the valley to the east with open eyes, a tired expression on his face. His arm was badly wounded though it held the Winchester. A few feet away from him laid three dead cougars, bullet holes in their skulls, two laid some ways away from him, one almost right next to him, a knife stuck into the side of it’s head. “Father…” Kermit sighed softly. Roosevelt stumbled back against the cliff, he’d shot the first two cougar, including the one that bit half his arm off. The third slowly approached him before jumping at him, knocking the sick man back against the rocks. Roosevelt acted quickly, stabbing his hunting knife into the cougar’s head, causing it to fall away from him. He shot it between the eyes before collapsing against the rocks. A few feet away from him, the sun started to cover the rocks after a while. He crawled over to it with the last of his strength. Maybe he could get back to camp? No… he was done. He wheezed loudly and coughed a bit before laying back against a rock, staring off into the valley, looking at the rising son. “Cruel ,cruel world, I’m moving on…” He wheezed, looking at a deer down in the valley. He brought out a tired smile, the expression that remained rested on his face as a last wheeze brought out the last breath that came from his black lungs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- San Salvador, El Salvador October 27th, 1916 El Salvador had always been politically unstable, they obviously needed a strong nation like the United States to keep them in cheque, otherwise bad things happen. Like the time the assassination of the Salvadoran president caused the Central American union state to fall apart. The United States of America would have it no more. A purge seemed to be happening in El Salvador, presumably executed by the army, nobody knew what was happening, but various government figures, including the president, had gone missing, or been assassinated. The U.S would not let her neighbouring country suffer from instability like this, thus their military intervention came conveniently at the perfect timing, weird how that can work out, huh? American troops entered the country from Honduras and Nicaragua, as well as through a marine corps invasion. They headed straight for the three biggest cities, San Salvador, Santa Ana and San Miguel, to get the operation over with swiftly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The White House, Washington DC, November 6th, 1916 It is election day, and in the White House, tensions rise between candidates Woodrow Wilson and Charles Evans Hughes, as the latter seems to have the upper hand in the polls… The gathering the two stood before was a merry bunch of Democrats, Progressives and Republicans, the Democrats and Republicans were arguing slightly, the Progressives mostly kept their mouths shut and enjoyed the show. Wilson began calmly “After 1912 I went hard at work...” “A-After 1912 I went hard at work!” Hughes chimed in. Wilson frowned and continued. “I finished up my plans and I practiced governance..” “I practiced governance, he worked nextdoor..” Hughes said with a smirk, pointing lazily at Wilson with his thumb. Wilson squinted, turning away from Hughes and everyone but the Democrats, starting to complain. “Even though I started at a much earlier time, Charles Evans Hughes began to climb… How to account for his rise to the top?” “Man, the man is non-stop...” All the democrats huffed together with Wilson. “Gentlemen of the Senate I’m curious, bear with me. Are you aware that we’re making hist’ry?” Hughes started speaching to the Progressives and Republicans. “This is the next era for our grand nation, the liberty behind deliberation.” “Non-stop!” Wilson’s running mate, Thomas Marshall, exclaimed. Hughes continued undisturbed. “I intend to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt against this fake candidate-” “REAL CANDIDATE! HUGHES SIT DOWN!” Wilson shouted. “You’re going to turn things around after you win, pretty obvious. That’s all you had to say.” Hughes rolled his eyes and tried to continue. “O-kay.. One more thing-” Wilson would have none of it. “Why do you assume you’re the smartest in the room? Soon that attitude may be your doom. Why do you write like you´re running out of time? Write day and night like you're running out of time? Ev'ry day you fight, like you're running out of time. Keep on fighting. In the meantime.” “Non-stop..” The other democrats sighed, as Hughes simply continued. “Corruption’s such an old song that we can sing along in harmony, and nowhere is it stronger than here in DC. This country’s economy’s increasingly stalling and.. Honestly that’s why public service seems to be calling me.” “Non-Stop...” Wilson shook his head, leaving the stand to sit down next to Marshall. Charles Evans Hughes grinned and, indeed, didn’t stop. “I’ve practiced the law, I’ve practic’ly perfected it. I’ve seen injustice in the world and I’ve corrected it. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Late 1915 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A lot had changed really fast in the summer of 1915. William Howard Taft took a step back from politics and focused on his job as a Professor at Yale University Law School. The man replacing him as the main figure for the Republican party was Charles Evans Hughes, governor of New York. Woodrow Wilson’s position within the democratic party was uncertain after all his arguing with Taft made a fool of himself. His position as the face of the party was being contested by men like James Cox, John Davis, Edwin Meredith and a man with a familiar surname, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. With Taft out of the picture and Wilson’s position for the next elections uncertain, Theodore Roosevelt began to seem like the light in the dark of American Politics, but then shocking news was shared. All over America, September 20th, 1915 At noon on the 20th of July, all radios sounded the same presidential message, by dinnertime, the newspapers had caught up on it and the next morning, everyone knew what the President had said… “What follows is a message to all Americans from the President of the United States of America.” Said a neutral voice on the radio before Roosevelt started speaking. “My fellow Americans.. Ahum… I interrupt your lives today to bring you a message, a message that might shock many of you as much as it did me. For the past months, I haven’t been feeling ‘fit as a bull moose’ like.. cough like I used to, I thought nothing major of it until just last week.” He wheezed slightly as he took a long breath and coughed a few more times. “Last friday, I woke up feeling stuffy, lightheaded and dizzy. I could barely.. cough stand on my feet as I got out of bed. For a bit I thought it would pass, that it was just a part of getting older. But as the afternoon approached, I didn’t start feeling much better yet. I… Called in my cough cough my doctor… And after some examination… He.. Diagnosed me with Tuberculosis...” He coughed lightly and took a deep breath again. “I’ve been under medication to give me energy ever since… But sadly, my condition is past the stage of the disease being likely to be cured anymore… I.. Feel capable enough to keep working, partly due to the abundance of great men in our government that are willing to work hard on everything.. But this does mean I will not be running for president again next year, despite already being nominated by my fellow P- cough cough cough COUGH cough my.. My fellow Progressives… By the end of the year.. I will retire from politics to.. In the hopes of peacefully living out the last of my days. From then until the inauguration of the next president, vice-pres cough vice-president Johnson will take my place. The United States of America stepped in to aid their neighbour, sending US marines and soldiers in an invading force of about 1,500 men. The fighting didn’t take long, only 28 American soldiers were killed and 70 Haitian soldiers opposed to over 200 rebels. The Haitian government had regained control of the country, though it remained occupied by the USA due to remaining political instability. By October 5th, most fighting had died away and American soldiers were garrisoned across the island, including the capital… and the seat of government. No corrupt presidents could be allowed to ruin this country no more, so the US Army took control of the nation until they could find a suitable new president. Of course this had to be someone who understood the United States’ interests in Haiti… For now though, Haiti would remain a place where there was no government except that of general Shelton and the US Army’s 1,500 soldiers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Governance Office, Lincoln, Nebraska (?) October 15th Recently, the citizens of Nebraska, the large majority of which had German heritage, had been complaining to the governor of Nebraska to permit a referendum for changing the state’s name. A first referendum had proven that a majority of Nebraskan citizens did in fact want a name change. A second referendum had shown that the favourite optional new name was ‘New Hanover’. While the governor remained hesitant, he eventually saw himself forced to further the issue to be voted on in congress. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- War Industries Board, Washington DC, October 31st, 1915 To further the mobilization programme, the Council of National Defense formed the War Industries Board as a government agency to coordinate the purchasing of war supplies and equipment between the War Department and the Navy Department as well as the producers of said supplies and equipment. Combined with this, the annual budget for the Council of National Defense sees an expansion to account for the greater purchases of equipment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Food Administration, Washington DC, November 31st, 1915 As a joint effort between the ministry of Agriculture and the Council of National Defense, the United States Food Administration is founded to ensure sufficient food supply and production for a nation with a growing army. Now do we provide aid and volunteers to our French friends, or do we stay out of it? Remember, my decision on this matter is not subject to congressional approval. When we were on death’s door, when we were needy… We made a promise, we signed a treaty. Spring and Summer of 1603 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp Spring went by peacefully in the colony of Trompsylvania, the soldiers returned home in May from the war in Hanseong, no deaths, only a few sick men. Their families were delighted to see them again, though were sad the war was lost. Many felt pity for the Neu Brandenburgers and they convinced President Tromp to invite any Neu Brandenburgers that were still alive and didn't want to live under Korean rule, to come to Trompsylvania where they could get their own neighbourhood in Nieuw Rotterdam. As word was caught of a disease ravaging the Haudenosaunee, President Tromp ordered for one of the colony's two doctors to be sent up north with a few men to see if he could cure some of their native friends. Extreme caution is to be taken as not to catch the disease themselves, whatever it may be. ---The Dutch Proposal--- In the midst of summer, President Tromp gets a letter from the outposts at he mouth of the Tjessepieck bay, Dutch ships had been spotted in the distance a few hours earlier and were now approaching the bay, were the ships to be stopped or let into the bay, towards Nieuw Rotterdam? President Tromp ordered for the ships to be let through, ordering for vice President Joris Wasserman to come to his office at once wherever he may be. Towards the evening, the Dutch ships approached New Rotterdam, Tromp leaned on his walking cane, vicepresident Wasserman at his left side, treasury secretary Koopman on his right side. They watched the Dutchmen dock one of their ships, their captain coming forth to greet the men. The five men had dinner that evening, secretary of state Thomas Janssen joining in, and discussed the matter of why the Dutchmen were here with a few ships, carrying about 150 peasants with them as well as a bunch of rifles. It came down to the Dutch Republic wishing to support Trompsylvania, in return for most of the fur the colony produced being shipped to Holland, for free... The next morning, the cabinet of the small colony met in the town hall of New Rotterdam, the weak president Tromp sat silent in front of the gathered men as vice-president Wasserman spoke for him: "My finest gentlemen.. You could've been anywhere in the world today, but you're here with us in New Rotterdam's cabinet. Are you ready, for a cabinet meeting?!” Wasserman called out, he was a popular fellow, a bit of a showman, he'd been quite the cultural figure in his younger days. The gathered men all knocked on the wood of their benches, excited to hear what they were called in for. "The issue on the table... The Dutch government's plan to assume our fur production in exchange for continued support. Secretary Janssen, you have the floor, sir...” For over an hour, a heated debate followed between Secretary Janssen and Secretary Koopman. Eventually Tromp and Wasserman had heard enough, and like usually, they went with their little favourite, Tromp's right hand man: Alexander Koopman, accepting the Dutch proposal. As the meeting was ended, everyone started standing up and leaving, amidst the slight chaos, Thomas Janssen stepped up to Alexander Koopman, prodding him on his chest. "So quick-witted..” "Alas, I admit it..” Koopman squinted. "I bet you'd be quite a lawyer...” "I could get my defendants acquitted..” "Yeah.. Well someone ought to remind you-” "What?” Koopman asked softly with a glare. "You're nothing without Wasserman behind you...” And just as Alexander Koopman was about to say something, Wasserman opened the door of the room he and Tromp went into. And now the Vinlandish fleet retreated back north, the siege of Hanseong was about over, and the 100 militiamen from Trompsylvania were sitting idle in their wooden camp in the forest. They'd been living off of dire rations, some of them were sick, many of them were bored and just all of them were done with the fight. Neu Brandenburg had lost, it was clear. There'd be nothing they could do about it anymore. At the beginning of spring, they had to make the call, the way home would be doable again now that the snow was melting... Would they retreat? Or would they fight? After the soldiers, all of them, commanders and footmen alike, discussed the matter one night, the answer became clear. When they spotted a Hanseong scout in the distance the next morning, one of them climbed up on the parapet of their camp, frantically waving a white handkerchief... Trompsylvania Virtus libertas est, et independentiae Autumn and Winter of 1602 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp Trompsylvania was doing alright for itself, the colony was developing rapidly, the population was growing steadily, the economy was booming and food was plentiful. The Dutch settlers had made friends with the Haudenosaunee to the north and formed a pact of non-agression, furthermore, the natives had offered to protect the colony if they were to be attacked. Money was coming in plentifully, both from production as well as trade, a lot of which was done with Wittehaven, where a lot of food was exported to. All in all, the small colony was blooming, the only major issue was their envoys to the old world not returning, which bothered the President. The city of Nieuw-Rotterdam in the distance with Trompsylvanian farms in the foreground, right on the Tjessepieck bay. Various reforms were made within the colony's governing system, Tromp's health wasn't making a turn for the better, so he wished to leave his nation as best as possible before his seemingly inevitable passing. He appointed two secretaries to function as a sort of advisors, the secretary of state, and the secretary of the treasury, modelled after the Dutch Stadtholder and Councilpensionary. The latter of which was a man called Alexander Koopmans, a Dutch trader and banker from origin. He'd proven to know all there was to know about trade, money and finance and his policies made the colony's wealth soar to new heights, something that drew attention to him among the citizens. On December 1st, he opened the new Grand Market, a plan of his own, and on the 5th (Saint Nicholas' Feast), the market was already full of stands, primarily selling things for the holiday season. Tromp had taken a liking to him and unofficially made him his right hand man, something that'd inevitably bother the secretary of state, Thomas Janssen, if he wasn't gone to the Haudenosaunee territory, learning about their structure of state and laws. A vicepresident was also appointed; Joris Wasserman, who used to be a general in the eighty years war, and had always been a close friend of Tromp. The men of the upper class of Trompsylvania at a party, with Cornelis Tromp himself sitting in the middle. The final of the three ships that the colonists used to get to Amerika was now being sent back to Europe, a delegation on board. They were to find more settlers like the previous two ships that had disappeared. This time a different approach would be taken though, offering to make New Rotterdam a port of export of American goods for the Dutch Republic, giving an offer no Dutchman could resist: profitable trade. Hope was put into the last ship that could give the colony contact with the old world, the last of their ships capable of crossing the Atlantic. And already he introduced something new. The so called “State of the Union”, where he spoke to Congress and the press about his plans for the year, replacing the former “Annual message to the congress”. The Progressives, the Republicans and the Democrats had debated over this for a long while, but eventually agreed that this was more efficient in these times and were a more proper way to hold the annual adress. A big topic in this State of the Union speech was the controversial elections of the year prior and Roosevelt’s part in what was happening in Mexico, to which he said the following: “I am well aware, my dear fellow Americans, that you all have mixed feelings about what has been happening in our nation as of recent times. And I know that a lot of you would have rather not seen me stand before congress once again today. But I ask you, have faith, have faith like you did those other two terms, those two terms that brought great progress to our Union. Me and my fellow Progressives will not let you down. Nor will the other two parties with which we’ll work together as best as possible. Believe you can, and you’re halfway there. That’s what you’re used to hearing from me and that’s what you’ll hear from me again. The Rio de Janeiro conference had failed, not like anyone should’ve expected otherwise from nations like Brazil or Mexico. The U.S. had offered Mexico peace on favourable terms, but the Mexicans would not have it. Roosevelt stated: “I am a man that will honour his nobel peace prize. But I am also a man that won't simply let his fellow Americans be attacked. (...) I say that we would be willing to work together with el Presidente señor Caranza in dealing with these bandit gangs, though we do expect reparation payments to all the damage done to American towns and farmsteads by said Mexican gangs.” While the Mexican government refused and all delegates left the conference room soon after, the President has not ordered for further action, but instead for the ranchers and possible outlaws, the so-called ‘cowboys’, to return home and for the U.S. army to garrison the forts on the border. The main goal of this further development were resources, for Alaska had proven to be rich of such. Roosevelt and vice-president Johnson knew that the democratic party would oppose their plan for further development of Alaska for greater resource exploitation, so Johnson came up with an alternative plan… “Ah! Marshall was in the middle of telling Wilson about his problems at home, tears in his eyes, when Wilson sighed, having had enough, he asked “Can we get back to politics?..” Marshall promptly sat down in his chair by the chess table, setting out a frustrated and somewhat depressed ‘please’. “Yo..” Wilson snapped his fingers as to grab his attention while he sat down. “Ev’ry action has an equal opposite reaction...” He said as he picked up a chess piece and moved it forth to knock over one of Marshall’s pieces. “William Taft shat the bed. I love the guy, but he’s in traction...” He grinned at Marshall, who looked a little less sad already, but frowned as Wilson picked another one of his pieces off the board. “Poor Eugene Debs? He.. Is missing in action… So now I’m facing-” Marshall moved forth one of his pieces. “Teddy Roosevelt..” “With his own faction...” Wilson concluded with a deep frown. My real crime is an amorous connection with his wife for a considerable time, with his knowing consent. I had frequent meetings with her, most of them at my own house. During these visits, Mrs. Edith Roosevelt and our children, would be absent on a visit to her friend. And he wrote it down right there!” said a man to his friend. “Damn!” the other replied after reading the article. “At his own house?!” A girl in her teens exclaimed before covering her mouth. “At his own house..” Her mother replied with slow nodding. Is he not around to give word to the press?” A shopkeeper in downtown manhattan asked a politician that read the New York Times. “I.. I don’t know.. He wasn’t home when people went to look for him this morning.. He probably fled the critique..” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mexico-US border, Fort Bliss, Texas, September 9th, 1912 Teddy Roosevelt had his typical grin on his face as he and his men rode into US army camp Fort Bliss. It’d been a long journey, by train to the southwest and then on horseback for the last part. But here they were. Everything had gone according to plan. Roosevelt knew that the army officials he was meeting today were sick of the government not doing anything against the Mexican bandits raiding Texas and New Mexico, so he’d taken the gamble to head to Texas, rally up a bunch of cowboys through his contacts, and meet with the army at the location they discussed, Fort Bliss. “Good afternoon folks!” Roosevelt cheered as he and his dozens of cowboys rode into the army camp. Hundreds of soldiers watched the iconic figure ride by and waved with big grins. The military had taken it upon themselves to garison the forts on the Mexican border, but they were afraid they’d get into an argument with congress. Then Roosevelt rang them and said he was on board. Now he was there, travelling from fort to fort to motivate the troops, take pictures for his campaign and rally cowboys and local farmers to his ranks to deal with those darn Mexicans like they did in the old days: with guns and horses. “Who’s ready to kick ‘em Mexicans back across the border?!” Roosevelt stayed in the southwest for a few weeks, nobody except his family, some close friends and some colleagues knew where he was, this was to be a suprise. Together with the army he made sure all the forts on the border got manned, that any bandito raid was met with gunshots straight away, that any attack on the US would be met with a counterattack and most importantly, that everyone knew it was him taking action, not Taft or Wilson, who sat around campaigning rather than protecting the nation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The White House, Washington DC, November 4th, 1912 The last speeches were given that day. Taft, Roosevelt and Wilson, all speaking to the press one last time to ask for support from the voters. Tomorrow, November 5th was election day. Taft was simply acting defeatist, his support had dwindled more and more over the last months, less Republicans supported him by the day, all switching the Progressive “Bull Moose” party, or even the Democrats. Though, not the Democrats as much anymore though. Wilson had been doing great in the polls until mid-September: The Wilson Newspaper Scandal. When Roosevelt returned from his trip to the Mexican border because he caught wind of the news of the affair that had spread about him, he was furious. He immediatly claimed it’d all been lies, and the government started an investigation. From the start, Roosevelt had had an alibi: he hadn’t been anywhere near New York when “Theodore Roosevelt” delivered his letter to the New York Times late at night. He had been in Texas, defending the states against the Mexican bandits. Within two weeks the pretender Roosevelt had been found, he truly looked like the presidential candidate. In the face of being sentenced to prison, he confessed that he’d been paid by Marshall and Wilson to deliver a fake letter to the New York Times; a measure taken by the democrats to kick Roosevelt out of the race and strengthen their position. It isn’t necessary to tell how badly said plan backfired. Now they stood in the White House, all four candidates. Most of the planned time went to Roosevelt and Wilson, with interest for Taft and thus the press’ interest for him being more moderate. There was also Eugene Debs, the presidential candidate for the Socialist party, but he had even less support, not many people wanted to hear from him all that much. The Democrats spoke out for tariff decreases, banking reforms, Philippine independence and Marshall’s “really good five cent cigar”. The Republicans spoke out for breaking up monopolies, less protectionist tariffs and “trust busting”. The Progressives spoke out for improved workers’ rights, universal sufferage for women, a social welfare programme, increased action against the Mexican agressions to protect the union, regulating monopolies and lastly, greater tapping of Alaskan resources. Not many listen with a lot of interest... Taft isn't all that popular, he was when Former President Theodore Roosevelt gave Taft his approval for the next Republican candidate, but the two men had slowly descended into open rivalry during Taft's presidency, due to his policies. Now a crowd of New Yorkers and other Americans stood before him, listening to his speech, or well.. Some listened, others were just celebrating the new year in front of the stage. There were a few men quite near to the front that DID listen though, a small clique of politicians... "Hey, is that Teddy Roosevelt?!" A drunk man standing close to one of the politicians suddenly yelled. Within seconds a large amount of people focused their attention on the clique of politicians- all of them were Republican progressives, Roosevelt in their center. "IT IS! HEY FOLKS! ROOSEVELT IS HERE!" Another voice yelled. "Franklin? The Senator?!" "NO! TEDDY ROOSEVELT!" were some of the more audible exclaims. Within seconds the crowd was no longer focused on Taft, who himself had halted his speech with a deep sigh, squinting at Roosevelt who grinned up at him. Within seconds, his grin faded though as reporters had already made their way to him.. This was what happened last months whenever Roosevelt found himself outside in his home state of New York. "He seems approachable.." "Aye, like you could have a beer with him..." A man said sarcastically. The reporter had given up trying to ask his question as the crowd descended into arguing and chaos, but then, the crowd asked the reporter's question: "Dear mister Roosevelt, your fellow Americans would like to know who you'll be voting..." Roosevelt glanced to his friends "We should go home.." "Dear mister Roosevelt, William Taft doesn't stand a chance so who are you promoting?" "Now we should go home..." He said again, his friends and him making their way through the crowd towards their waiting car. "La Folette or Wilson? Tell us, tell us, tell us.." "La Folette or Wilson?! C'mon please tell us!" "Dear mister Roosevelt, William Taft doesn't stand a chance so who are you promoting?" Said the headline of the New York Times the next day. Taft read it with a glare. "Just like the New Yorkers looked to Hamilton in 1800 to decide between Jefferson and Burr and endorse either of them since Adams was sure to loose, New Yorkers now look to former President Theodore Roosevelt to support either Republican Robert La Follette or Democrat Woodrow Wilson, as Taft is sure to be out of the picture by the end of the year." "That goddamn Roosevelt is screwing everything up! First he and his progressives clique of our party make it impossible for my administration to get any bills through congress and now he's going to screw up my re-election!" Taft shouted at his butler, his wife sitting next to him and frowning. "Calm down, William.." "NO! I will not calm down! La Follette isn't one to draw votes! If Roosevelt keeps going like this he's going to make the Democrats win with Wilson! The Democrats Helen! The party that almost never wins an election! It's gonna be a landslide!" "I'm sure a democratic victory with Wilson isn't realistic.. Let alone a landslide.." She said doubtfully. As the American politicians were busy tearing eachother into pieces, they had trouble making any progress in governing. Not much could be done against the Mexican banditos that were raiding Texas, no progress was made with better workers' conditions, no progress on the railroads, no foreign actions, nothing. The Taft administration tried to keep rowing with the peddles they had, the other half of the Republican party, most notably Roosevelt and his clique of progressives did everything they could to oppose Taft, meaning no work got done. And all the while Wilson and the Democrats were busy raking in the voters. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Town hall, Columbus, Ohio, June 8th, 1912 At the beginning of the campaigning season, in June, Taft and his supporters had a rally in Columbus Ohio. All of the Republican party was there, including good ol’ Teddy Roosevelt… Taft was in his element, these were his supporters! These were the people that’d vote for him, that believed the republicans had a chance and deserved another chance. He grinned and mumbled to himself “Talk less..” “TAFT!” The crowd cheered. “Smile more..” “TAFT!” “Don’t let them know what you’re against and what you’re for...” “TAFT!” He went to shake a factory owner from Cleveland’s hand “Shake hands with him..” “TAFT!” and then proceeded to make a quick flirt with the man’s wife. “Charm her..” “TAFT!” “It’s 1912, ladies tell your husbands: ‘Vote for Taft!’” “TAFT!” The crowd cheered along with him. Not all were there for Taft though, there was also a crowd surrounding Theodore Roosevelt and his friend Hiram Johnson. And still, the people asked him the same question. "Dear mister Roosevelt, your fellow Republicans would like to know how you'll be voting..." “I wish I was home..” He muttered to Johnson. Finally, after being asked the same question for months, Roosevelt was sick of it. “Well then, if it ain’t gonna be Taft, for we all know the man’s daft..” Taft walked over to Roosevelt, having heard the commotion. “Theodore.. You’ve created quite a stir, sir..” Roosevelt glared at him. “I’m talking to the people, you boor..” “Sure.. You’re openly campaigning… That’s new...” Roosevelt snorted ”Aye, honestly it’s kinda draining…” Taft grunted “Is there any way to make you stop?” Roosevelt’s joking face turned to a serious one “No. I’m chasing what I want, the top..” People’s eyes widened, were they hearing this right? Was former president Roosevelt saying he was going to be running again, right in the current president’s face? “And you know what?” Roosevelt continued. Taft replied “What?” “I’ll make you drop...” Here and there, a soft ‘oof..’ or ‘ouch’ was heard in the otherwise silent crowd. Taft was furious. “You?! OLD MAN?! You’re ‘n old grandfather!” Teddy R. squinted “But still fit like a darn bull moose...” At that, Taft and his buddies stormed away. His supporters stood silent, confused as to what just happened. Roosevelt’s supporters cheered, the man himself grinning widely under his moustache. He had made his point. And he would be running for president again… Just liked that there was another candidate for the presidential elections. Roosevelt and his supporters split from the Republican party to form the Progressive party- which everyone called the “Bull Moose Party” after Roosevelt’s metaphor. Taft’s support dwindled further as the remaining republican supporters that looked to him or those that had looked to the democrats with Wilson, now looked to Roosevelt. Good old Teddy Roosevelt. He’d been a great president! Surely he’d do a great job again, right? Vote for Teddy Roosevelt and the Bull Moose party!

Trompsylvania Virtus libertas est, et independentiae Spring and Summer of 1602 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp The independant colony of Trompsylvania had come through the winter just fine, stronger even. The economy, the population and the colony as a whole were growing. Their envoy back to Europe hadn't returned, but whatever happened to them, it mattered not, they didn't need Europe. They were independant after all! Eerste Amerikaense Waterwercken - First American Waterworks As spring came around, the colony went into it's second year of existance. As the frost in the ground melted, some colonists in the west of the colony began doing what dutchmen do best: digging a canal and building waterworks and polders. Around New Rotterdam, dykes were started on to keep the city dry at high tide or storm. These dykes were to continuously be upgraded over the years. Across the colony, lakes were dried out by digging ditches for water disposal and constructing windmills for pumping the water out of the lakes into the trenches. This provided more farmland and better irigation across the colony. A canal with a protective waterlock was started on to cut the Delaware peninsula off from mainland North America as a way to provide quick passage to the ocean, and most notably to the West India Company colony. Opening our pockets to the New World This canal to the WIC colony was of good use, since the trade proposal from their governor had been accepted by the President last fall, trade had started to flourish between the WIC and Trompsylvania, adding to the colony's income. The WIC wasn't the only new trading partner though. White Port, a colony that was believed to be from Turkey, otherwise known as the Ottoman empire, had settled some ways to the north, a bit past Nieuw München. While the Dutch sailors had initially found White Port weird, both because of it's name- which was changed to "Wittehaven" in the books, and because it was a muslim colony, the sailors had no problem with the small Islamic territory as soon as they heard about the issue they were facing: a lack of food, something that Trompsylvania had in excess by coincidence. Quickly an agreement was made between the two colonies, Trompsylvania would ship Wittehaven large quantities of food in return for a healthy profit. "Entrepreneurship is seeing what everyone sees and doing what nobody else does." Tekeni ronkwe, enhskat kanónhsa - Two men, one house The christmas delegation up north to the Haudenosaunee confederacy was a succes! The colonists made friends with the natives, staying with them for a while to learn about their language and culture as well as way of life. One of them had focused on learning the languages of the Haudenosaunee - the people of the longhouse, also known as the Iroquois, and speaking with them in a way both sides understood had become much easier. After a few months back with their families in Trompsylvania, the President sent the delegation back north again in the summer, bringing with them some more gifts like beer, a map of all of the known world and more. This second delegation had a clear goal: they had learned about the confederacy the Haudenosaunee had formed, as well as their peaceful way of life. While the dutchmen of Trompsylvania weren't interested in joining the confederacy, they were very much so interested in peace. The delegation was to ask for a pact of non-agression, as well as to teach the Iroquois about Western civilization, and to learn from the Iroquois about life in America. Trade between the Haudenosaunee and Trompsylvania is also proposed. Protestant League The Protestant League is founded between the Protestant colonies of Trompsylvania, the West India Company, Neu Brandenburg and Vinland. This league is to preserve peace as best as possible in the American northeast coast. It is not an alliance, nor a single nation. It is an organisation of protestant colonies for mutual benefit and protection. Rules of the Protestant League: 1. No hostile actions can be taken against other members of the league. Trompsylvania Virtus libertas est, et independentiae Fall and Winter of 1601 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp Autumn came fast after the summer. By then Tromp's colony was well settled within their new environment. New Rotterdam had become a proper settlement and farmers had began settling a large part of the Tjessepieck bay region. The harvest was good for the first one, and food was plentiful, something that was also due to there being less mouths to feed than expected... A disease had swept through the region, their kin in New Amsterdam had also suffered from it they knew. 63 people in Trompsylvania had died from it, which may not seem like much, but it certainly was for a little world that only counted about 2100 people. Cornelis Tromp was one of the many individuals that suffered from the disease, but luckily didn't die. Nevertheless the brave little colony, the home of the free, lived on. The few doctors they had, had learned from the disease and set to work finding a cure. Food and supplies were hoarded for the winter, the first snow fell soon. But then came a time to set aside the worries, and celebrate. First came the Dutch feast of Sint Maarten, or Saint Martin. Children from all over the little town of New Rotterdam went outside after dark with little lanterns, going from house to house, singing songs in return for candy. Then came the 5th of December, Sint Nikolaes' feest, Saint Nicholas' birthday. In great anticipation, children and teens awaited all day while they drank warm chocolate and tea, and ate speculaas cookies. Great anticipation, because they were worried Saint Nicholas maybe couldn't come to America. Perhaps he was too busy with Europe? They sang prayer-like songs at the fireplace, wishing for Saint Nicholas not to forget them. Then they heard it. A loud bang on the front door. The children went silent while the parents smiled softly and encouraged them to go look. When they opened the door they were faced with a bag of presents and a dark individual disappearing in the cold, snowy night. "Zwarte Piet! Zwarte Piet!" The kids called after him, hoping he'd maybe come back to give them something sweet, but to no avail. The next day children all over Trompsylvania showed eachother what Sint Nikolaes and Zwarte Piet had given them, playing with their kites, dolls, hoops or playingballs, all of them telling they believe they saw the Saint himself riding on his white horse through the night. Then finally came Christmas time, the feast to celebrate their saviour's birth and to share love and presents. A small band of people left the colony and rode their horses through the snow, taking presents with them to share with the Iroquois people up north. Surely they'd appreciate the share and care in this cold and dark time of the year, perhaps they could make some good friends. --- Amidst all the celebrations, Tromp was still recovering from the disease. He was worried, the doctor had told him he'd never fully recover, and his health would most likely remain weak. He'd survived for now, but the doctor couldn't guarantee for how much longer. This got Tromp to worry about the future of their small independant colony and the future of his people. He needed to secure a peaceful future for them. To make sure they would never lose their freedom to anyone. He had to establish a proper base for their nation, a safe one. He figured he could do this by starting with limiting his own power and that of his inevitable successors. Four years, that'd be the period of time their ruler would rule for. In four years you could make some progress, but not give yourself too much absolute power. It seemed good to him. He also decided to take the Republican Experiment to the next level. Not just the council should be able to vote for their leader, all people should! (all people concerns not all people, women, children, slaves, indians, and people of other races excluded). So what should be his title? Everyone just called him mister Tromp, but that was moreso because he hadn't given himself a title yet. Some called him admiral, since he used to be one, but even that was too prestigious to him. He wanted his title to be something humble-sounding... Nothing like emperor, king, prince or even stadhouder or governor... His secretary rolled his eyes, he found the whole question of title a bit overexaggerated, "For the love of God! Trompsylvania Virtus libertas est, et independentiae Former Dutch Admiral Cornelis Tromp and his small fleet with followers slowly sailed into the large bay they had found. The "Chesapeake" the map said, but being Dutchmen, they soon 'corrected' the spelling to "Tjessepieck". At the start of the bay they found a river feeding into it, the land was nice for settling on and the soil seemed fertile. They anchored the ships and went to investigate this new land. The settlement had been constructed quickly and almost nobody was required to live on the ships anymore by the end of summer, something they had aimed for, as they all knew how cold life aboard could be in the fall and winter. Tromp sent out colonists to claim some of the surrounding land as well as the mouth of the Tjessepieck bay, nobody knew who or what lived around here. They had heard news of the so called "WIC" sailing off to America from Amsterdam at about the same time Tromp and his followers left Rotterdam, so who knew. There'd been rumors about people with feathers on their heads looking at the Dutch settlers from the treeline at twilight, but there hadn't been any contact yet with these strange feathered humans. Administratively, Tromp and his topmen weren't entirely sure yet what to do with this new land. They knew they wanted a republic, but how this republic would work wasn't sure yet, they also still flew under a Dutch republican flag, but that wasn't of their biggest concern currently... THERE'S THOSE FEATHERED HUMANS AGAIN. Explorers are sent out across land and sea to see if there's other humans in the region and to possibly figure out what those featherpeople are. Some are sent to scout the coasts, some are sent across land and some are sent to travel up the rivers in the region, like the Susquehanna, Potomac, James and Delaware. The town of Nieuw Rotterdam develops fairly quickly, with a market and wooden pallisade already being built. A sizeable militia of most men in the town (500) is also put up, as to serve as a means to protect the colonists if needed. Land is regulated, but handed out for free, there's plenty of it, and there could never be too many farms. The settlers were delightedly suprised when they found wild turkeys, which they thought came from the Indies rather than America, but nonetheless were quick to catch and domesticate. As the mouth of the Tjessepieck was settled, Tromp's colonists stumbled upon another settlement, much like theirs. After some distant observing they realized these were also Europeans... Maybe there were more people in America than just them... Soon one of them pointed at their flag, recognizing it as the English flag from his time in the navy. They sat around discussing what to do for a while before they simply headed for the settlement with a small band of armed men, wishing to ask why the English of all people were here too. And well, if they were here in America, might as well get some trade deals out of them... Dutch Republic Neêrlandsche Republieck Early 1750 Staten Generaal - States General Domestic Affairs: The Dutch Fortress Cities in the north of the Southern Netherlands, the region owned by Austria, that serve as a buffer against a French invasion are being upgraded in their fortifications. Some of these cities simply had medieval city walls and a small keep, but those too are now being upgraded to the Starfort design invented by Mauritz van Oranje-Nassau. Aside from new construction, the forts are being upgraded all-over in regards to organisation, manpower in the forts and supplies. [MOD] In the port district of Amsterdam, the docks are expanded with a sizeable area for the new Grote Markt, the Great Market. This is a big square with tons of places for market stalls with at the end opposing the port, a bazaar-like building called the "Specerijenmarkt", the Spice Market, where only goods from the Indies are to be sold. Surrounding the other sides of this new Great Market are warehouses for merchants to store their goods in. The aim of this sizeable new construction is to make Amsterdam even more of a center of trade than it already is. [MOD] The States General together with the Stadholder make an effort at removing the last remains of the Dutch divide of Orangists and Republicans. In this, Willem III quotes Johannes de Witt, one of the most influential Dutch politicians ever, murdered for his political beliefs in 1672: "Hasn't every one of us has lost a relative to our enemies, the Spanish and the British? And was that Republican, or Orangist blood? No. That was Dutch blood! Our blood!" [MOD] American Slavery: A request is sent to the Thirteen Colonies/Great Britain as well as to France for fortified port outposts in Charleston and Nouvelle Orléans to bring slaves from the Dutch Caribbean isles to the American mainland and sell them from these outposts. Dutch Republic Neêrlandsche Republieck Stadhouder William IV The Dutch Republic, perhaps the first nation founded on the ideals of revolution. It was founded in 1588, in the middle of the eighty years war, the war of independance that the small fletchling Dutch nation fought against their Spanish overlords. In 1648 the war finally ended, and in a Dutch victory. During the eighty years war and in the years that followed, the Dutch republic experienced a true golden age. This region of europe that once was only of minor relevance launched itself into succeeding Spain as the world's hegemonic state. The Dutch republic was the world's leading economic, scientific, naval and political power, something they in part accomplished by their republican, capitalist ideals. Stadhouder William III even became King of England, Scotland and Ireland, almost putting an Anglo-Dutch union state within reach. Things were not to last though, as the Dutch Golden age ran into the 1700's, becoming the Silver Age. Their colonial empire began to shrink, and world dominance shifted to Great Britain. The Dutch Republic was still a world power, but not the world power it once was... William IV had only become Stadhouder of all of the Dutch Republic in 1747. Previously he'd been Stadhouder of the provinces of Frisia, Groningen and Guelders, the other 4 of the 7 United Provinces, had chosen not to appoint a new Stadhouder for the time being after William III's death. In 1747 though, these provinces also recognized William IV as their Stadhouder, officially making him the next Stadhouder of the Dutch Republic. By then he had two daughters, Carolina and Anna, and during this time, his wife, Anne, the eldest daughter of George II of Great Britain, was pregnant with their third child. Life as a hard working regent was taking it's toll on William IV though, and his health was starting to fail him.
