  1. British Empire The church bells of Westminster Abbey sound throughout the centre of London while trumpets blow the first tunes of the British Coronation Anthem. Royalty from all over Europe is invited, as well as many presidents and prime ministers from all over the world. The Royal Standard waves in the wind, as a new King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the British Dominions, a new Emperor of India, Edward VIII is crowned. LONG LIVE THE KING The election of 1933 With the vote of no confidence passed, not only was King George VI forced to abdicate in favor of Edward VIII, Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald was forced to step down from his position similarly. Normally, the Deputy Prime Minister would take up this position, but MacDonald never formally appointed a Deputy. That, combined with the House of Commons failing to function properly, has lead to Edward VIII calling for new elections as he dissolved the current Parliament. The palace of Westminster closes its doors while the voting offices open theirs. And at the top of the bill sits a new party, formed by an alliance of three men who recently scored headlines in the papers by winning a political victory against the old King, in favor of the new one. This new party, the King’s Party as it’s called, is a coalition of the aforementioned Churchill, George and Mosley, forming a coalition party loyal to King Edward VIII, incorporating George’s Liberal values, Mosley’s fascist views and conservative standpoints he shares with Mr. Churchill. As if the newspaper attention wasn’t enough, the two Members of Parliament and the former Prime Minister, now Father of the House, tour the country, giving speeches all over the place, some of them together with Edward VIII, who’s shown great support for the men who seem to share their plans for Britain with him. Only time will tell what course British politics are taking, as the people await the election results. Scotland All of this political turmoil is not the primary concern of the King and the nation though, the people are reminded as the papers show the young King himself visiting the front up in the Pennines. With nearly 700.000 men on the front in Northern England and everything prepared for an attack, things are set into motion. The RAF drops explosive after explosive upon the Scottish defenses all throughout the night while the majority of the British troops try to get some rest. Upon the break of dawn, forces all along the front ready themselves before the order is given, a front-wide attack commences against the weakened Scottish forces. While the attack is front-wide, a strong, motorized and armored force attacks from Carlisle, headed for Newcastle, aiming to cut off a large part of the Scottish forces and force them into a retreat. Ireland With the army’s main focus right now being on Scotland, the troops in Ireland are not reinforced much. They are however given appropriate equipment, and the English-held cities (Dublin, Waterford and Cork) are fortified and garrisoned by elite forces while military police enforces strict marshal law, not shying away from severely punishing any Irishmen that dare take action against English soldiers. In Ulster, RAF planes drop propaganda leaflets down onto cities like Londonderry and Belfast: traditionally bastions of pro-English and pro-Protestant sentiment in Ireland, calling for the Irish protestants to side with their English brethren, warning them that if Ireland was to succeed against the English, persecution by the catholics was more than likely. Finally, in Dublin, a mixture of Canadian and English forces are amassed with plans being drawn up to retake Leinster, though no plans are put into action just yet. Egypt In Sudan, supply lines are reinforced through Port Sudan and French Djibouti as more and more forces from as close as East Africa or as far away as New Zealand arrive. British engineers build a dam on the Nile river, drastically lowering the amount of water passing through and simply letting it flood into the Merowa basin in northern Sudan, slowly creating a large wetland in the middle of the Sudanese desert and depriving Egypt of its most valuable asset: the Nile river. Small forces of East Africans, Rhodesians and Australians, all veterans that fought against the Ottomans in the Great War, stage a few attacks against the Egyptian forces, carefully testing their defences while the main forces simply guarded the border while supplies were secured. The French Empire is called into the fight against the Egyptians, part of their navy and some troops being stationed on Cyprus together with the British Mediterranean squadron and a force of Royal Marines while they continuously wreak havoc on the Egyptian northern coast. More ships arrive from Great Britain, including two more battleships and a heavy cruiser, brought in to let artillery shells rain down upon the defenses at the Suez. Economy To help support the recovering British economy, sizeable government investments called “The Royal Pennies” are initiated by Edward VIII himself, paid from the royal treasury and targeted on companies that support the war effort like arms producers but also electricity and logistics companies. Actions: -Edward VIII made King -Elections are held -Extensive campaigning for the new King’s Party -Counterattack against the Scots -Buildup in Ireland -Measures taken to prepare for large-scale conflict in Egypt -Royal Pennies
  2. British Empire Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves! And rule the waves she did. But ruling on land was an entirely different story nowadays. The Great Depression had hit the global superpower hard and as a result of which, trouble had arisen on the homefront. The Scots and the Irish had revolted and risen up for independence. Many people put the blame on George V, who had been unable to prevent this from happening… The Joint Motion. 19th of January. Westminster: The parliament in Westminster was a mess to say the least, worse than the most furious Brexit debate. The MP’s were trying to discuss what course they should take from here onward. The questioning of George the fifth’s rulership was a hot topic in the discussion, as many looked to him for order and support in these dire times, which he didn’t provide sufficiently. As tensions arose and the Speaker of the House, Edward Fitzroy called a break, MP’s left the House in grave annoyance. Various smaller discussions broke out in the hallways, and amidst the chaos, a few MP’s from multiple parties slipped into a backroom to talk. Most notably, these included: Winston Churchill, member of the conservative party, Father of the House David Lloyd George of the Liberal party and Sir Oswald Mosley of the British Union of Fascists. Later that day, once MP’s had once again gathered in the House of Commons, it was these three men that put forth a joint motion: A vote of no confidence in George V and a demand for his abdication and replacement by Edward VIII as well as a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. British Army, RAF and Royal Navy: While the men in Westminster were trying to get things under control again, the British Armed forces worked hard to contain the problems for now. Men were deployed to halt the Scottish advance and heavily arm the border to make sure the Scots would be in no position to keep pushing. Marines were sent to help in holding the last held ports in Ireland. Meanwhile, the RAF would combat any Scottish or Irish planes that dared taking to the skies, and the Royal Navy issued a full blockade of the rebellious celts, they would receive no more supplies. Furthermore, these ships were to harass the coasts with naval artillery bombardments on fortified positions and cities. The threat would be contained. Colonial troops were called to service from the Raj, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa and Rhodesia, to be sent to the Sudan in the effort to reinforce the British defenses against the Egyptian rebels and attempt to halt an Egyptian advance. The Royal Navy mediterranean squadron was also called in to attempt a blockade against the Egyptians, sever their supplies and harass Egyptian ports, namely Port Said. A rumor spread amongst these men, that a million british pounds were promised to the crew that managed to put a hole in the Egyptian battleship and make it sink. As the focus for the Royal Navy laid on the Suez Canal, the fight against the Egyptians soon became known as The Suez Crisis. Actions: -Vote of no confidence against George V and Ramsay MacDonald. -Containment of Scottish and Irish armies and blockading & harassment of their coasts. -Initiation of the Suez Crisis: BEF called in to defend Sudan and Mediterranean Squadron of Royal Navy called in to oppose Egyptian fleet and attempt on breaking defenses of Suez Canal.

  4. Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem The Teutonic Order “Helfen, Wehren, Heilen” Turn: 3 Current Grandmaster: Heinrich Walpot von Bassenheim Population (Members): 14.250 Allegiance: The Holy See/The Holy Roman Empire Headquarters: Byblos (Kingdom of Acre) --- (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUtXo1sTPDg) The patrol would be on it’s morning routine, 200 German soldiers and 20 knights of the Empire scouted the lands surrounding Ascalon in the coolness of the morning, singing a happy song they’d thought up. “Wir kommen aus das Reich, und leben in Byblos! ‘Aber gibt es dort kein Muslime?’ Nein dort ist ja nichts los! Ibelin und Aschkalon nimmen wir ohne sorgen! Und der Hauptpreis Jerusalem? Ah, dort gehen wir morgen!” (We come from the empire, and live in Byblos! ‘But aren’t there muslims there?’ No there there’s nothing wrong. Ibelin and Ascalon we took without worries! And the main prize Jerusalem? We’re going there tomorrow!) With papal decree, the pagan lands in the northern baltics were given to a branch of the Order, the Livonian Brotherhood of the sword, who were to aid the Bishop of Riga in converting the region. The German warrior monks in Riga started setting up a headquarters in the city and recruiting christian men into their ranks, beginning to organize their control in the region. ---------------------------------------- Actions: -The Crusade carries on! -Army’s quality is refined through extensive training -Raiding bands of Teutonic Knights are sent across the Ayyubid border. -Recruiting more Germans for the order from chapters all over central and western Europe, aided by the news of the crusaders’ conquests. -Securing county of Tripoli (Byblos area) -Livonians start getting organized in Riga -Rigans are recruited into the ranks of the Livonian Brotherhood -Missives are sent out into the Livonian Brotherhood’s territory, making it known that any pagans are invited to the Brotherhood’s church sessions in Riga and other Christian settlements in the Baltics, where they can learn about the True Faith and be baptised if they so wish. 5. Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem The Teutonic Order “Helfen, Wehren, Heilen” Turn: 2 Current Grandmaster: Heinrich Walpot von Bassenheim Population (Members): 13.200 Allegiance: The Holy See/The Holy Roman Empire Headquarters: Byblos (Kingdom of Acre) --- (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUtXo1sTPDg) “Heinrich, wir haben ein Brief bekommen! Von die muslimischen Hunde! Vielleicht ist es ein Scherz!” The Grandmaster’s right hand man called with a bit of laughter as he walked in with the message the Ayyubids had delivered to them. ‘We received a letter! From the muslim hounds! Perhaps it’s a joke!’ He had called. As the two read the message, they began laughing again. “[in German:] He requests me to keep the PEACE between our people? HAH!” “And he DEMANDS us not to attempt breaking the truce between them and Acre. Like we have anything to do with any agreements Acre has signed...” The Grandmaster snorted. “May Allah protect us, yeah right! May GOD tell them his name is GOD and not ‘Allah’.” He jested with a grin before walking outside into the camp of the Order to stand upon a crate and read the letter out loud. Approximately 20 seconds later, some ten thousand men were laughing their asses off. Later that day, the Grandmaster altered the letter a bit, making a better version before sending it off to Rome, with the side note that copies of the altered letter were to be made and spread throughout the Holy Roman Empire and hung up on every door of the Order’s chapters, serving as propaganda for the Order’s cause. The altered letter reads: “See this letter as a supplication, I King Adil the first, from the Ayyubid Kingdom, request that you, Heinrich Walpot von Bassenheim, Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order, keep the peace between our people, we beg you not to convince the Kingdom of Jerusalem to attack us. May GOD protect us all when Allah fails to do so and please, please don’t attack us, we can’t take it.” Underneath the letter, it reads: “It appears the muslim hounds think there is any sort of ‘peace’ between us proper catholics and them pagans. They fear our ever-growing strength and have resorted to sending letters of pleading to avoid losing the Holy Land. Join the ranks of the Teutonic Order now and we shall show the muslim hounds together what our response to this sign of weakness shall be!” They rode in 3 groups of 30, 2 going north and 1 going east across the mountains. Die Herren im weißen Mantel, The lords in white capes rode out to show the Ayyubids what they thought of peace. As they galloped through the Levant, they sang an ominous song. Heja heja heja! Heja! Und ihre Schwerter blinken...” It sounded in the morning wind. They were out to kill any Ayyubid muslims they came across and pillage some of the villages leading up to Tartous, Homs and Damascus. They were told to be quick and efficient, if any trouble in the form of local guards was seen, leave them be if there’s too many. They were expected back in Byblos the next morning. “Heja heja heja! Heja!....” ---------------------------------------- Actions: -Castle Byblos is further fortified -Army’s quality is refined through extensive training -Raiding bands of Teutonic Knights are sent across the Ayyubid border. -Recruiting more Germans for the order from chapters all over central and western Europe, aided by the propaganda of muslim weakness. -Forced converting of any remaining HERETICS in the county of Tripoli -Meeting with the Pope -Patrolling county of Tripoli Christ ist erstanden von den Toten, im Tode bezwang er den Tod, und schenkte den Entschlafenen das Leben
  6. Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem The Teutonic Order “Helfen, Wehren, Heilen” Turn: 1 Current Grandmaster: Heinrich Walpot von Bassenheim Population (Members): 11.000 Allegiance: The Holy See/The Holy Roman Empire Headquarters: Byblos (Kingdom of Acre) --- (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUtXo1sTPDg) “Christ ist erstanden von den Toten..” Sang Grandmaster Heinrich together with his most trusted Knights and close company in the halls of the Byblos Citadel in Acre. They had arrived there in the early morning, having travelled through the night from Acre itself, where the King had granted them the Citadel and surrounding lands. The remainder of the Teutonic Knights’ forces were also travelling to the citadel now, their new headquarters. After morning mass in the citadel’s chapel, the men had breakfast together and then got to work with their German Arbeitsgeist. Unpacking of supplies and the setting up of a camp big enough for over ten thousand men began in Byblos, while others saw to the castle’s defenses, repairing them and making plans to improve and expand them. Training and sparring grounds were set up for the military side of the Order and within a few days, knights were busily sparring, and the normal warrior monks of the Order were given training. The port of Byblos started expansion under the Grandmaster’s orders, so that it could accommodate more ships from the west. Envoys of the Order were sent to the Holy See in Rome, and their Seat in Vienna. The envoy to Rome was to ask the Pope for a similar Seat and Hospital in Rome as a base of operations together with the Pope. The Envoy to Vienna was to recruit more men from the Holy Roman Empire and seek the Emperor’s blessing in the Order’s cause. Meanwhile, the priests of the Order who were less involved with the military side, started making sure any muslims or jews in a wide range around Byblos would be converted to catholicism. The local church also started ambitious expansion to accommodate both the city’s new german population, as well as the new christians. Once the Order got its initial organization done, patrols of Knights and cavalry were sent out to patrol the county of Tripoli and it’s borders, enforcing order. ---------------------------------------- Actions: -Headquarters is moved to Byblos -Castle Byblos’ defenses are improved -Army’s quality is refined -Byblos’ port is expanded -An envoy is sent to Rome -An envoy is sent to Vienna -Recruiting more Germans for the order from base in Vienna -Converting of any HERETICS in a wide range around Byblos -Expansion of local church -Patrolling county of Tripoli Christ ist erstanden von den Toten, im Tode bezwang er den Tod, und schenkte den Entschlafenen das Leben.
  7. Nation name: Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem. AKA: Teutonic Order Population: 11,000 (Pure MANPOWER) Summary of History: The Teutonic Order was founded in Acre, in the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the siege of the city in 1190. It was originally founded as a hospital for German pilgrims, but in 1198 it was transformed into a military Order. Papal orders were received to fight crusades, conquer the holy land and convert any pagans they would come across. After the Third Crusade though, the order returned to Europe, retreating to their new seat in Vienna. Discord: u got it
  8. The Federal Empire of California - El Imperio Federal de California Late 1863 and All of 1864 Population: ~850.000 Army Size: ~38.250 Imperial Friends: With the war of French Intervention in Mexico over with a French success, and California having aided the victors, the Imperial government was eager to establish good relations with the new Mexican emperor, Maximilian von Habsburg. Therefore, Emperor Norton invited the upper classes of California and Mexico to a ball in his palace in San Francisco, to make his acquaintance with his new colleague, establish good relations between the two nations and invite them to sign a pact of economic partnership between the two nations, called “The two golden crowns of the West”. Kalifornische Armee: An envoy of the minister of foreign affairs and the minister of defense is sent to the Kingdom of Prussia to seek an audience with Wilhelm I and discuss options for military cooperation between the two nations, primarily the request for Prussian military advisors, drillmasters, quartermasters and professors to educate Californian generals. The goal is to reform the Californian army into one of Prussian organization and quality. What the Prussian Crown would want in return for this, is entirely negotiable. Council of Old and New: All Native American Chiefs that have opted to join the Empire of California, are invited to a summit in Sacramento. Here the so called “Council of Old and New” is established as a council between the Old and New Americans. This is to be chieftains’ primary way to discuss matters with the Imperial government, as for the most part, they are left to live in isolation from the rest of the Empire. Various matters are discussed though the main one is one of military concern, as the chieftains are requested to sign a bill that will form the “1st Native Cavalry Division”, which is to exist entirely out of Native American horsemen and expand the Californian army with thousands of men. The main argument for this request is that the Native Americans should help in protecting their new nation, one that has given them more freedom than they’ve ever experienced in the past century or so. Industrializing the Frontier: By far the biggest part of Government investments in this period is spend on the primary and secondary sectors of the Californian economy. Sizeable investments are given out to logging, mining and ranching companies, while even bigger investments are given out to industrial companies like kerosene and tar producers or manufacturers, not to be overlooked are the nation’s military and gun manufacturers in this section.
  9. The Federal Empire of California - El Imperio Federal de California Early 1863 Population: ~498.000 Army Size: ~15.000 An Armed State: “To ensure our fledgeling nation’s safety in this world with ever-growing armies, we must build up our own army. But, due to our minor population, compared to some of our neighbours, an army alone might not suffice. Therefore, California, the open West, God’s own country, must arm itself, to stand against foreign threats and protect our American Dream!” These words were spoken by Emperor Joshua Norton I upon the signing of the National Armament Bill. This new law was to ensure the Federal Empire of California would get a larger army to use, as well as an armed population who could be called upon to defend their national homestead at any time. All men, aged 17, 18 and 19 would have to serve in the Californian Army, during which they would be paid for their services as to compensate the temporary loss of a helping hand on the homesteads of their parents and to give them more financial opportunities later on. Furthermore, all men were expected to either own a firearm or know how to use one in case they’d be called for service. Eastward Expansion: With the Federal Empire now stretching from British Columbia to Mexico, it was time to make the eastern border definite. The lands formerly known as the Washington Territory, Utah territory and most of the New Mexico Territory, are claimed by the Empire and turned into the “Rocky Mountain Territory”, representing the first two ex-US territories, and the “Mesa Territory” in what used to be the New Mexico Territory, east of the Rio Grande. The peaks of the Rocky Mountains and the Rio Grande are now taken as the eastern border of the Federal Empire of California and control is assumed over the area in between. Messengers are sent to various major tribes like the Navajo, stating they’d get a province of their own, where their tribe rules, in the Empire, if they submit peacefully. These autonomous provinces would be nearly independent, yet a part of the empire. The Emperor would let the Indians know he wanted to make peace with them and live together in harmony, throwing away the old ways the USA had treated them in the past. Various army camps were also to be set up in these new territories, to ensure some degree of control and order over the population in this currently lawless land. International Relations: The Californian government would further their relations with the French, stating they’d be eager to have Emperor Norton I marry a Bonaparte princess. The Mexican governors of Baja California and Baja California Sur would be invited to the Imperial Palace in San Francisco. They were asked about whether they would be interested in seceding from Mexico and becoming Dukes under the Imperial crown of California, appointing them and their descendants to power for life, ruling over their Duchies in the southern peninsula. Focus would also be laid on the fact that it’d safe them and their people from the war with the French, and that they were Californian Hermanos in the end, who should be united. The Californian government would seek to establish relations with British Columbia, Hawai’i Japan, Qing and the Russian Empire, in regards to Russian Alaska, asking for Californian embassies to be set up in their respective capitals. A meeting was also arranged in San Francisco with delegates from Hawai’i, Japan and Qing, proposing a trans-pacific trade and migration pact.
  10. The Federal Empire of California - El Imperio Federal de California Early and Late 1862 Population: ~476.000 Army Size: ~14.000 The Oregonian Provinces: After Oregon’s refusal to join the Federal Empire, ten thousand Californian soldiers were sent northward across the border to make the state’s government reconsider. Without too much of a struggle and a minimal loss of soldier lives, Oregon and the Federal Empire were able to come to an understanding, and thus the territory was brought under Imperial rule. The invasion had begun on the 10th of February 1862 and practically ended little over a month later as Californian troops seized Portland on the 18th of March. By the end of March, order had been established in the occupied territory, and the Treaty of Salem was signed, citing the full annexation of Oregon by the Federal Empire of California. Organization: With the brief invasion of Oregon over, the Federal Empire looked to make some consolidations. Two thousand Californian soldiers remained in Oregon to keep order there, while the rest of the army moved back south. The former counties of Oregon were made into provinces of the Empire. Construction would also be started on a new road network with San Francisco as its center. Focus would be put on the road to Portland, as no proper infrastructure was present yet in the new Oregonian lands. Professionalization of the growing Californian armed forces would also be a major focus of this Organization effort. Economy: Attention was also put in the productivity of the Californian economy. Gradually, steps would be made towards state-capitalism, with the founding of enormous state-ran orchards and vineyards in the south of the empire, as well as the founding of the “Californian Lumber Company” which entailed setting up vast plots of land for woodcutting, mostly in what used to be Oregon and northern California. Similar efforts were made regarding the lifestock industry, all at the expense of small homesteads, which would slowly be getting outcompeted by the state-ran companies, according to the plans of the Imperial Government. These small, local farmers would of course in turn be provided work for at the larger companies. International Relations: An envoy is sent north to Vancouver to seek diplomatic relations with Canada and in turn, the British crown, as well as for them to recognize Californian claims to former U.S. territories west of the Rocky Mountains, especially regarding the Californian-Canadian border in what was currently known as the Washington Territory. Also, a secret telegram is sent to the French Staff in Veracruz, who were intervening to establish the Empire of Mexico with Maximilian I of Austria as its leader. The message would be brief, but suggested the establishment of Franco-Californian relations with an embassy in San Francisco, and the discussion of Californian participation in the conflict alongside the many other parties that were involved, for which the Imperial Federation might want ownership of Baja California after a French victory. Emperor Approved.
  11. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Late 1917 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC, October 7th, 1917 A congress was held in the White House between president Hughes and the leaders of Russia, the Ukraine, Poland and Finland, regarding the Russo-American Co-Prosperity Treaty that was to be signed. The delegates were flown over from St. Petersburg with the airship “Pilgrim”. The flight was one of the first Trans-Atlantic ones and the longest one so far, yet the journey took only about two days. The media were all over the meeting at the presidential residence, making many pictures as the blimp slowly descended into Washington DC, and as Charles Evans Hughes shook hands with Tsar Nicholas himself. The treaty itself was an economic one, including a few main points: -The USA would, in cooperation with Henry Ford, export sizeable amounts of the Fordson tractor and even build a factory for said vehicle in Tsaritsyn ((modern day Volgograd)). -A shared economic advice board would be founded with five American advisors and one for each of the Russian Union’s substates. These were to make sure economic relations between the two powers went in everyone’s best interests and as smoothly as possible. -The “Russian Standard Oil” or “Rossiyskoye Standartnoye Maslo” company was to be founded, which is to encompass almost all of the Russian petroleum industry. The company’s shares are 70% American owned and 30% Russian owned. In return for this, the Americans would make large investments into said petroleum industry. More oil fields are to be set up, new regions are to be prospected for oil and more refineries are to be built. -Furthermore, beginnings of a domestic blimp transport network are set up, with lines being established between the cities of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and Warsaw, as well as New York, Chicago, Washington DC and Philadelphia. -Lastly, import and export tariffs on American goods would be lowered, making it easier and much cheaper for American companies to sell lots of products to the RU with bigger profits than before. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 19th, 1917 In Philadelphia, a grand construction effort is started. A new monument is being built called “The Protective Fathers Monument”, featuring statues of the founders of the American Armed Forces, each almost 100 feet high! George Washington is the central statue, as the founder of the army, then John Paul Jones and John Barry as the founders of the navy, Alexander Hamilton as the founder of the coast guard and lastly Samuel Nicholas as the founder of the marine corps. The monument is to be a sign of the grandeur and power of the great American Experiment, standing tall, awe-inspiring in this metropolitan city. Each statue is a large (granite covered with) bronze statue of the person in question, with extravagant decorations around their pedestals. Washington is depicted directing troops, surrounded by small statues of infantrymen and cavalrymen. John Paul Jones and John Barry stand back to back on the front deck of a ship that sticks out of the ground as the pedestal, sailors peeking over the railing with muskets, aimed at those passing by. Alexander Hamilton is depicted standing on some rocks like a lighthouse, holding up a lantern in one hand while pulling a man out of the granite and bronze waves with a rope in his other hand. Samuel Nicholas is depicted with an actual American flag in his hands which he held high, small statues of marines in uniform at his feet, lined up. It is planned to be finished by the end of spring. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, December 1st, 1917 With the army now much larger after the mobilization effort, and getting more and more professionalized through the Four Year Plan, attention is now to also be laid on the navy. In Norfolk, Virginia, plans for the largest naval base ever are finalized and the NS opens. The gigantic military base houses thousands upon thousands of personnel and spans over 3400 acres. The main bulk of the atlantic fleet is to be stationed there from now on, rather than being scattered all over the west coast like before. The base is not to be visited by civilians, but for the opening ceremony, some press and visitors are let in to take a few pictures of the sailors and ships. Organization and centralization was key for this base, and it will certainly be a great help in expanding and upholding the US Navy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actions -The Four Year Plan continues. [MOD] -The 150 million US$ investment into the Manufacturing Belt continues. [MOD] -Immigration is heavily encouraged. [MOD] -The US Army Engineers focus the US Airship Programme on Blimps for extensive domestic use and limited military use. Research is also done into simple robotics. [MOD] -TBC [MOD] -The Russo-American Co-Prosperity Treaty is signed between the RUSSIAN UNION and the United States. [MOD] -Construction is started on the Protective Fathers monument. [MOD] -Naval Station Norfolk is finished and put into action. [MOD] -Anglo-American Tank Programme continues. [MOD] -The Four Year Plan Agricultural Reform continues with more funds for the tractor subsidies. [MOD] -A referendum regarding statehood is held in West Elizabeth (former Vancouver Isl.) [MOD]
  12. The Federal Empire of California - El Imperio Federal de California Early and Late 1861 The newly formed Federal Empire of California with Emperor Joshua Norton I has consolidated power within the borders of California, now looking outward to the rest of the United States. “What a damn mess, glad we’re far away from all that.” The Emperor is quoted to have stated according to the Humboldt Times from San Francisco. Reformation: California of course went through some reformation, seeing how it went from a State with a governor under the USA, to being a Federal Empire with an Emperor. This is mostly due to Joshua Norton, the self-proclaimed Emperor of the United States, being such a popular figure in the media. When he proposed for the newly independent California to become an empire under him, the small circle of Californian politicians immediately invited him to do exactly such. With Norton as their figurehead, they would have backing from the public. Thus the Federal Empire was formed, a Federation of Provinces, lead by a Senate, similar to the US’ system, but with an Emperor at it’s head. San Francisco became the new capital, being by far the largest city within the Empire. A City Hall/Palace began construction in the center of San Francisco, to function as both the place where the Senate is held as well as the place where Emperor Norton would live. Trade: California had strong trading connections with the Latin American west coast as well as Asia. The new Empire would seek to uphold these relations, making public that free trade would remain in the new nation like nothing had changed. Delegates were also sent to meet King Kamehameha IV of the Kingdom of Hawaii to make sure Californian traders could continue to use Hawaii as a port to dock on their way to Asia. International Relations: The second part of the diplomatic mission to the Kingdom of Hawaii was to offer them an alliance between the two monarchies. A delegate is also sent to Mexico, which had just finished a civil war with the Liberal party winning. The delegate offered for the two new governments to recognize each other and establish friendly relations. Later in the year, the first forces of the new Californian Imperial army (which were mostly just outdoorsmen who could handle a gun and had had some basic military training), were positioned along the border with Oregon while the Imperial government sent it’s weaker northern neighbour an ‘offer’ to join the Imperial Federation. Expansion: The Empire of California would lay claim to all former US territories west of the rockies, starting the so called “Eastward Expansion” where represents of the Imperial Federation were sent into the unorganized former Utah Territory and New Mexico territory to get local towns and villages to offer them to get their own province within the new Imperial Federation, it was not pushed too hard though, as it was assumed the Imperial Federation’s claims over the sparsely populated territories would be clear enough to say that land was going to be theirs.
  13. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Early 1917 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC, July 7th, 1917 General Pershing, accompanied by various other members of the American general staff were having a meeting with President Charles Evans Hughes, they were discussing the improvement and modernization of the army as a part of the Four Year Plan. Some men that weren’t invited, nor liked the plans they were making, were the Democrats. “It must be nice, it must be nice… To have the generals on your side..” Thomas Marshall mumbled as he, Woodrow Wilson, James Cox, Franklin Roosevelt and some others silently observed the meeting from the second dining room in the government building, eyeing them through the glass doors. “It must be nice… To have the generals on your side..” He mumbled again. Wilson frowned deeply. “Every action has its equal opposite reactions. Thanks to Hughes our party’s fractured into factions.. We try not to crack under the stress but we’re breaking down like fractions… We smack each other in the press, and we don’t print retractions...” Cox nodded “I get no satisfaction witnessing his fits of passion. The way he primps and preens and dresses like the pits of fashion.” Roosevelt would add “Our poorest citizens, our farmers, live ration to ration. As Wall Street robs ‘em blind in search of chips to cash in.” Wilson stood up “This prick is asking for someone to bring him to task, somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him. I’ll pull the trigger on him, someone load the gun and cock it! While we were all watching he’s got the military in his pocket..” The generals and the republicans stood up, shaked hands and left the building. Thomas Marshall shook his head “If we don’t stop him we aid and abet it.” “I’ll have to resign..” Wilson sighed. “Somebody has to stand up for the south.” Cox frowned. “Well somebody has to stand up to his mouth..” Roosevelt rolled his eyes. “If there’s a fire you’re trying to douse...” Wilson started saying before Marshall joined in “...you can’t put it out from inside the house.” Roosevelt sighed and nodded. “We’re in the cabinet, we are complicin’ it, watchin’ him grabbing the power and kissin’ it. If Hughes isn’t gon’ listen to disciplined dissidents this is the difference: this man is out!” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- London, Greater London, Great Britain, July 22nd, 1917 White House, Washington DC, U.S., July 22nd, 1917 During the Great War, the British Empire and the United States had worked together in developing tanks, leading to the America-made Mark I tank. Towards the end of the war, the British had come with an improved model, the Mark II. Now, the two powers had signed a treaty to continue their joint effort, starting the Anglo-American Tank Programme. This meant the United States would get the license to produce and replace the Mark I tanks with Mark II’s and the development process would be split between the two nations with the Americans focusing on cruiser tanks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USDA Head Office, Washington DC, August 3rd, 1917 Agricultural University of Lincoln, Lincoln, New Hanover, August 8th, 1917 As a part of President Evans Hughes’ Four Year Plan, the American agricultural sector was to get a lot of attention. In the first step of this process, the United States Department of Agriculture gives Ford & Son motors a multi-million dollar subsidy for the increased production and lower buying cost of the new Fordson tractor. This subsidy would be spread out over the course of the four-year period and would ensure that even farmers who didn’t have an awful lot to spend, could afford to buy a Fordson tractor for use at their farms and ranches. The other part of this first step of Hughes’ agricultural programme, was the Agricultural University of Lincoln, which was to be founded in Lincoln, New Hanover, and would focus solely on agriculture and biology related studies, providing them for a reasonable price. This was to ensure that sons of more well-off farmers could come study here in Lincoln to expand their knowledge of the details of working in the agricultural sector and thus improve their farms’ productivity in the future. It’d also provide a place for experts to work on further developing farming technology and techniques, like what machinery or fertilizer to use, or experimenting with better food for livestock. Synthetic fertilizer would be a hot topic at the moment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia, September 11th, 1917 During the massive mobilization effort that the United States started during the Great War, Fort Benning in Georgia, which was previously just a minor military camp, was expanded a lot as new recruits were coming in every day. Now the mobilization had slowed down, but the army was not simply going to discharge these new men from service. Thus, Fort Benning with it’s massive amount of military personnel present, was to be changed into a more permanent base. The Department of Defense is given a 1 million dollar fund for rebuilding Camp Benning into a larger base with more barracks, room for bigger training fields, a tank garage, storage units for equipment, expansion of the Infantry School and room for the Tank School from Camp Polk to be moved to Camp Benning. Military refinement was on the rise. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Various secret locations, Federal land, America, October 10th, 1917 As a part of the military refinement programme of the Four Year Plan, not only were places like Fort Benning to be improved, in a meeting with the U.S. Army’s general staff, President Evans Hughes and namely General Pershing has planned for various so called Combat Simulation Zones or CSZ’s to be built around the United States. In these zones, soldiers who had already received training and were ready to become professionals, would fight battles against one another, with loose flodders coming out of their guns, rather than actual bullets of course. Objectives for capture points and the likes would be the missions they’d fight, but these places were mainly for giving them a sense of the physical toll of hours on end of action without breaks in some of the most challenging environments. Indeed, challenging environments, these CSZ’s weren’t to be built in a simple field, they were built in places like southern Arizona, Alaska, the Rockies in Idaho, the Everglades in Florida and the American islands in the Pacific. Officers would make sure the soldiers would not be slacking during these missions, they had to experience the exhaustion of battle and get used to fighting in it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- American Engineering Association, New York City, New York, October 28th, 1917 As the Domestic equivalent of the US Army Engineers corps, the American Engineering Association is founded with it’s main office in Lower Manhattan. With American inventor Nikola Tesla appointed as it’s head, the AEA is to ensure American science progresses steadily into the right direction. The extensive domestic use of blimps, domestic radio use were some of it’s main development focuses, as well as refinement of technologies such as the refrigerator or washing machine, so that these too could be used on a broader scale. The AEA was also tasked with researching electrics and experimenting with these, Tesla’s forté. The AEA is established as a semi-autonomous organization of the US government, meaning they can be called upon to work on various tasks, but in general they’re free to let their experimental minds run wild, backed by funds of both the government and anyone willing to invest in the AEA. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actions -The Four Year Plan continues. 14. Discord Name; You got it Desired State; California History of said State’s history, leadership, and government; California didn't have a history that dates back a long time like that of most other states. It had only become a state ten years earlier, when it was conquered from Mexico. The area had been settled before then by a mix of Mexicans and American pioneers, the latter group increased significantly since the start of the Californian Goldrush. While the Goldrush had lasted only seven years, it lefts it's mark on California. The territory had rapidly changed, becoming the first somewhat tamed part of the 'wild west’. Towns had sprung up everywhere and the land had started being developed, the American west coast was becoming civilized. While California had been ruled by a governor like any other U.S. state, this fell into questioning as the U.S. itself fell. There were other figures in California, they may not all have been as qualified, though they were sure more popular. One such figure was a certain Joshua Norton. A man from San Francisco who the citizens of the city had begun calling the Emperor of the United States. He lacked any significant backing, he was a businessman who'd gone poor and now lived on the poverty line, instead he made made himself Emperor and declared it to the San Francisco newspapers, who thought it'd make for a fun article. Immediatly it caught on and people started going along with it, calling Norton 'his majesty’ and the likes. Norton became so popular in fact, that he started getting some actual power and recognition. Not only were San Francisco toy stores selling Emperor Norton dolls, mister Norton was provided free public transport too, some people, who felt sympathy for Norton's impoverished lifestyle, even went as far as to donate money to him, calling it "Tax Revenue”. It didn't take long before Joshua Norton was perhaps the best known man in San Francisco and the surrounding region, and his rise to popularity came at exactly the right time, because when the United States fell, people started looking for a man to lead the newly independent California in the right direction. Thus, in 1861, the Federal Empire of California was founded, with a small senate as it's government and Joshua Norton as it's popular figurehead, the Emperor from San Francisco. 15. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Early 1917 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC, January 31st, 1917 Charles Evans Hughes was the new president of the United States of America, with the Republican party back in power. Hughes wanted to blow a fresh wind into the US, he showed this primarily in his four year plan concept. This entailed a four year long plan, the length of his term, during which he promised to boost the economy, increase welfare and wealth and overall improve living conditions within the United States of America. The USA would once again isolate itself from the rest of the world, the City upon the Hill would distance itself from the valleys of chaos once more like it had done in the past and look inwards rather than outwards, growing ever stronger like the sleeping giant that it was, not to be awakened by the rest of the world. Of course this didn’t mean Hughes planned to close Heaven’s doors, he made clear during a summit in New York. He explained that he wished to instead boost immigration, stating: “If they’ve come knocking on Heaven’s door, it’s time we let them in.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- London, Greater London, Great Britain, February 12th, 1917 White House, Washington DC, U.S., February 11th, 1917 During the Great War, the United States of America had sold tremendous amounts of supplies and equipment to Great Britain for their war effort. Now that the war was over, American companies and the US government were calling for payday. The British, decent folk as always, readily obliged and paid off what they owed to the American manufacturers and the US government. To the latter they paid both in money as well as land. The United States were sold the British territories of Belize and Vancouver Island, as well as a sum of one-hundred million American dollars. In response to the good deal and proper handling of payment, President Hughes stated he looked forward to further cooperation with the British government in the future. Furthermore, the US government receives an additional fifty million American dollars from the German government as debt repayment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicago, Illinois, February 19th, 1917 Chicago, the biggest city in the area known as the Rust Belt or Manufacturing Belt, the part of the United States where the heavy industry was situated, was home to many of the factories that produced weapons for the British War Effort. President Hughes understood the economic importance of the Rust Belt and since the 150 million US dollars that the American government earned from selling weapons were produced in this area of the country, he saw it fit to directly invest these 150 million dollars, right into the Rust Belt. They would be used to further develop infrastructure and industry in that part of the country, as well as housing and living condition development. This was all to ensure a big economic boost in the Rust Belt over the course of Hughes’ Four Year Plan. Milwaukee, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, Lansing, Toledo and Pittsburgh would be the cities which were to gain the most from this investment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ellis Island, New York/New Jersey, March 5th, 1917 After the Great War, many Europeans saw their homes and countries wrecked. Many didn’t desire to live there no more and an increasing number of them were looking towards America. The US government felt a certain pressure of millions of possible immigrants coming to the nation. Hughes wanted to embrace this and even encourage it. Ellis Island would become THE designated spot for immigrants to first arrive in the States. The docks of the island were expanded just like the island itself where offices for the Bureau of Immigration and the Bureau of Naturalization were built to make sure the process of welcoming immigrants and extending citizenship was organized further. Additionally, the Bureau of Integration is founded, this bureau helps to teach new immigrants English for a cheap fee and also directs them into a variety of sections of the economy in case they want the Bureau to help them find a job. Furthermore, shipping from Europe to America with the purpose of transporting migrants to the US is subsidized, making the journey cheaper and thus more accessible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New York City Branche of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, New York City, New York, April 31st, 1916 Miss Anne-Beth Schuyler walked onto the tribune. “My dear sisters! Look around, look around, the revolution’s happening in New York!” “New York!” The gathering of thousands of suffragettes exclaimed, a sound that echoed between the buildings. “Look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now! History is happening in Manhattan and we just happen to be in the greatest city in the world!” “In the greatest city in the world!” The joined in. They had practiced this speech, every one of them. And in a few minutes, they were about to march through the major streets of Manhattan, putting down traffic in the economic centre of the United States. “As stated by one of our great founding fathers.. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal’. But if we were here with Thomas Jefferson...” “WE’D HAVE COMPELLED HIM TO INCLUDE WOMEN IN THE SEQUEL!” Thousands of women yelled. “We’ll start this revolution to cause a revelation, so listen to our declaration!” This passionate speech for women’s suffrage was one of many that day. Similar ones were being held in Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston and many more cities. All followed by a march through the city streets. Today would be the day they made clear to the American public what they wanted. Today would be the day they made clear to President Charles Evans Hughes what was to be done. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actions -The Four Year Plan starts. 16. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Early & Late 1916 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC, January 1st, 1916 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuoYjkbObvE A new year had started, 1916, and with it, a new president came. Last night’s new year’s eve party at the White House hadn’t been like other years, there was an overall mood of sadness amongst the attendants as Roosevelt had announced his stepping down as president, sticking around until twelve o'clock before being lead out by his doctor for a brief talk before heading to bed. The next morning, Hiram Johnson was officially inaugurated as the next president of the United States of America, only to stay around for a year, as he did announce, like all other prominent Progressives that they wouldn’t be running for president this year. Johnson said some nice words, both about Roosevelt, who stood by his side, as well as America itself, most remembered were his words about the world war: “May we stand unshaken, amidst a crash of worlds.” After the inauguration, Roosevelt agreed to speak to a few journalists, immediately being interviewed by one of the New York Times. “Mister Roosevelt, you said you were planning to live out the rest of your days in peace, but the general populace doesn’t expect you to, despite having TB, be sitting behind glass until your passing. Is this true?” Roosevelt made a sign of needing a moment, taking out a handkerchief to cough into, coughing up some blood. “Ahum.. cough cough that’s true I suppose.. I wish to cough see some o’ the world while I still can.. Cough cough cough.” The journalist nodded, giving him some time before asking his next question. “Where will you be going sir? And will we still hear from you?” “I plan on cough headin’ down south, the Andes mountains.. Cough cough. I don’t know if you’ll still cough hear from me specifically… But surely you will from my travelling companions which inc- cough include my… my sons..” He wheezed, coughing more blood onto the ground, waving the journalist off. “God bless you, mister Roosevelt..” He said, taking a step back. “God.. Bless.. America.. COUGH cough cough” Roosevelt brought out before the journalists were shoo’d away by guards and Roosevelt was helped inside by his doctor. Roosevelt at his home in NY after packing up, about to leave for S. America -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- U.S. Army Recruitment Office, Fayetteville, North Carolina, April 28th, 1916 Fayetteville, North Carolina was suddenly a city that was in all the major American newspapers. Named after French nobleman Marquis de Lafayette who served as a major general in the American revolution, the town was made the center of a new recruitment drive for a military division with a similar name: The Lafayette Division of American Volunteers to fight in France. Newspapers tried to appeal to young men all across the country with lines like “Do you want to fight for freedom and friendship? Aid France in their hour of need like they did for us; join the Lafayette Volunteer Division now, and start your mission before the end of summer!” The first shipment of volunteers across the Atlantic was scheduled before christmas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic May 5th, 1916 In late April, the Dominican Republic’s Secretary of War, Desidero Arias, seized power in the country and overthrew the government. To protect the Democracy of the Dominican Republic, the United States sends an invasion force of 1800 marines as well as a sizeable portion of the navy, under the command of Admiral William B. Caperton and Vice Admiral Harry Knapp. The commanders positioned their fleet some ways in front of Santo Domingo, demanding for Desidero Arias to leave the city and hand himself over while having his militia of 1000 Dominicans surrender. If he were to refuse, Santo Domingo would receive a Naval Bombardment, and the US invasion force would go on land, decked out with the best equipment available, ready to take out the military dictatorship by force if needed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kingston, Territory of Jamaica, May 15th, 1916 It came as a huge suprise, though president Johnson quickly accepted it. Apparently, Theodore Roosevelt had been having talks with the British crown regarding a certain island in the Caribbean, and out of the blue, he called the American government from Peru, saying he would like to offer his old friend Hiram Johnson the island of Jamaica, as a parting gift from Roosevelt to the United States of America. President Johnson didn’t believe what he was hearing at first, though after a long phone call explaining it all, interrupted by oh so many coughing fits, Roosevelt managed to explain that he had managed to buy Jamaica off the British crown for 53 million US dollars of his own money, and that he now wished to give the island to the USA as his parting gift, his way of truly saying goodbye to the nation he loved, before setting off to spend the last of his days exploring the Andes mountains of southern America. Johnson thanked his old friend dearly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fuel Administration, Washington DC, June 31st, 1916 To further organize the army and it’s mobilization, as well as being an organization for nationwide projects, the Federal Fuel Administration is founded. It’s main goals include keeping a steady supply of coal, oil, petroleum and the likes, while it also introduces measures to decrease civilian fuel usage. For example, daylight savings gets introduced, giving people longer days in the summer months so they have to use less fuel for lighting. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guantanamo Bay, Guantanamo, Protectorate of Cuba, August 19th, 1916 In Guantanamo Bay, on the Protectorate of Cuba, a US military base is formed for the newly founded ‘Caribbean Division’. This division is to represent Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, letting citizens of these American dependencies join the US Army with men and boys from the same area, fighting together in the name of freedom, under the star spangled banner! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Oval Office, The White House, Washington DC, September 10th, 1916 On September 10th, 1916, the Jones Act was enacted by President Hiram Johnson, this was to both appease and further integrate the Caribbean territories of Puerto Rico, Cuba and Jamaica, as citizens of these territories that were born there and speak English, are given American citizenship. This means that any residents of these islands can go to the nearest post office, and fill out a form to ask for U.S. citizenship, this gets looked at by the local governance office and either approved or denied based on some research into the person’s background. Those with American citizenship can call themselves Americans and experience all the benefits of being one. Furthermore, each of the three islands gets a proper US National Bank. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roosevelt Expedition Camp, Andes Mountains, Peru, October 3rd, 1916 Theodore Roosevelt, his sons and their guide had taken their baggage off their horses and stood up from briefly sitting down for a drink. Roosevelt wheezed loudly before pointing at one of his sons. “Kermit.. cough cough cough… You, your brother and Javier.. Cough cough.. Go set up camp for the night… Wheeze I’ll take the ol’ winchester and see what I can find for dinner.. Cough cough” Kermit nodded before turning around to the other two to start giving directions, Roosevelt slowly climbed onto his horse called El Jefe, the boss. He’d ride off into the woods to hunt, the last time he’d be seem alive. The coughing fit lasted a while after he climbed off his horse, eventually he gathered himself and kneeled down to inspect what he saw. Bloodstains. All over the place, accompanied by deer tracks. He’d follow the tracks for a bit as they lead up the mountain. A foul stench filled his nostrils and suddenly, behind some bushes he came across a half eaten deer carcass. “Cough better than nothing..” He mumbled as he took out his hunting knife and started cutting off a big piece of meat. Then he heard it. A rustle in the bushes, followed by a growl. He immediately knew what it was; a cougar. He took a few steps back silently, hiding behind a tree as a cougar emerged from the bushes, sniffing the carcass. “Stay silent Theodore..” He thought. Right after that, a deep cough bursted out, and he ran. "I’ve found him, amigos!” Javier shouted to the two sons. They ran up the mountain to where Javier was and in the distance, covered in the sunlight of the morning, they saw their father, dead. He laid against a rock, staring off into the valley to the east with open eyes, a tired expression on his face. His arm was badly wounded though it held the Winchester. A few feet away from him laid three dead cougars, bullet holes in their skulls, two laid some ways away from him, one almost right next to him, a knife stuck into the side of it’s head. “Father…” Kermit sighed softly. Roosevelt stumbled back against the cliff, he’d shot the first two cougar, including the one that bit half his arm off. The third slowly approached him before jumping at him, knocking the sick man back against the rocks. Roosevelt acted quickly, stabbing his hunting knife into the cougar’s head, causing it to fall away from him. He shot it between the eyes before collapsing against the rocks. A few feet away from him, the sun started to cover the rocks after a while. He crawled over to it with the last of his strength. Maybe he could get back to camp? No… he was done. He wheezed loudly and coughed a bit before laying back against a rock, staring off into the valley, looking at the rising son. “Cruel ,cruel world, I’m moving on…” He wheezed, looking at a deer down in the valley. He brought out a tired smile, the expression that remained rested on his face as a last wheeze brought out the last breath that came from his black lungs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- San Salvador, El Salvador October 27th, 1916 El Salvador had always been politically unstable, they obviously needed a strong nation like the United States to keep them in cheque, otherwise bad things happen. Like the time the assassination of the Salvadoran president caused the Central American union state to fall apart. The United States of America would have it no more. A purge seemed to be happening in El Salvador, presumably executed by the army, nobody knew what was happening, but various government figures, including the president, had gone missing, or been assassinated. The U.S would not let her neighbouring country suffer from instability like this, thus their military intervention came conveniently at the perfect timing, weird how that can work out, huh? American troops entered the country from Honduras and Nicaragua, as well as through a marine corps invasion. They headed straight for the three biggest cities, San Salvador, Santa Ana and San Miguel, to get the operation over with swiftly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The White House, Washington DC, November 6th, 1916 It is election day, and in the White House, tensions rise between candidates Woodrow Wilson and Charles Evans Hughes, as the latter seems to have the upper hand in the polls… The gathering the two stood before was a merry bunch of Democrats, Progressives and Republicans, the Democrats and Republicans were arguing slightly, the Progressives mostly kept their mouths shut and enjoyed the show. Wilson began calmly “After 1912 I went hard at work...” “A-After 1912 I went hard at work!” Hughes chimed in. Wilson frowned and continued. “I finished up my plans and I practiced governance..” “I practiced governance, he worked nextdoor..” Hughes said with a smirk, pointing lazily at Wilson with his thumb. Wilson squinted, turning away from Hughes and everyone but the Democrats, starting to complain. “Even though I started at a much earlier time, Charles Evans Hughes began to climb… How to account for his rise to the top?” “Man, the man is non-stop...” All the democrats huffed together with Wilson. “Gentlemen of the Senate I’m curious, bear with me. Are you aware that we’re making hist’ry?” Hughes started speaching to the Progressives and Republicans. “This is the next era for our grand nation, the liberty behind deliberation.” “Non-stop!” Wilson’s running mate, Thomas Marshall, exclaimed. Hughes continued undisturbed. “I intend to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt against this fake candidate-” “REAL CANDIDATE! HUGHES SIT DOWN!” Wilson shouted. “You’re going to turn things around after you win, pretty obvious. That’s all you had to say.” Hughes rolled his eyes and tried to continue. “O-kay.. One more thing-” Wilson would have none of it. “Why do you assume you’re the smartest in the room? Soon that attitude may be your doom. Why do you write like you´re running out of time? Write day and night like you're running out of time? Ev'ry day you fight, like you're running out of time. Keep on fighting. In the meantime.” “Non-stop..” The other democrats sighed, as Hughes simply continued. “Corruption’s such an old song that we can sing along in harmony, and nowhere is it stronger than here in DC. This country’s economy’s increasingly stalling and.. Honestly that’s why public service seems to be calling me.” “Non-Stop...” Wilson shook his head, leaving the stand to sit down next to Marshall. Charles Evans Hughes grinned and, indeed, didn’t stop. “I’ve practiced the law, I’ve practic’ly perfected it. I’ve seen injustice in the world and I’ve corrected it. Now for a strong central democracy if not, then I’ll be Socrates throwing verbal rocks at these mediocrities.” With that final word he casted a glance at Wilson with a grin: the polls were in… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actions -The reforms from the Second Square Deal are worked on getting through congress before Johnson’s term is over. 17. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Late 1915 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A lot had changed really fast in the summer of 1915. William Howard Taft took a step back from politics and focused on his job as a Professor at Yale University Law School. The man replacing him as the main figure for the Republican party was Charles Evans Hughes, governor of New York. Woodrow Wilson’s position within the democratic party was uncertain after all his arguing with Taft made a fool of himself. His position as the face of the party was being contested by men like James Cox, John Davis, Edwin Meredith and a man with a familiar surname, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. With Taft out of the picture and Wilson’s position for the next elections uncertain, Theodore Roosevelt began to seem like the light in the dark of American Politics, but then shocking news was shared. All over America, September 20th, 1915 At noon on the 20th of July, all radios sounded the same presidential message, by dinnertime, the newspapers had caught up on it and the next morning, everyone knew what the President had said… “What follows is a message to all Americans from the President of the United States of America.” Said a neutral voice on the radio before Roosevelt started speaking. “My fellow Americans.. Ahum… I interrupt your lives today to bring you a message, a message that might shock many of you as much as it did me. For the past months, I haven’t been feeling ‘fit as a bull moose’ like.. cough like I used to, I thought nothing major of it until just last week.” He wheezed slightly as he took a long breath and coughed a few more times. “Last friday, I woke up feeling stuffy, lightheaded and dizzy. I could barely.. cough stand on my feet as I got out of bed. For a bit I thought it would pass, that it was just a part of getting older. But as the afternoon approached, I didn’t start feeling much better yet. I… Called in my cough cough my doctor… And after some examination… He.. Diagnosed me with Tuberculosis...” He coughed lightly and took a deep breath again. “I’ve been under medication to give me energy ever since… But sadly, my condition is past the stage of the disease being likely to be cured anymore… I.. Feel capable enough to keep working, partly due to the abundance of great men in our government that are willing to work hard on everything.. But this does mean I will not be running for president again next year, despite already being nominated by my fellow P- cough cough cough COUGH cough my.. My fellow Progressives… By the end of the year.. I will retire from politics to.. In the hopes of peacefully living out the last of my days. From then until the inauguration of the next president, vice-pres cough vice-president Johnson will take my place. I felt that I needed to share this information with you, my fellow Americans, as soon as possible, as my remaining days in life are counting down… I thank you all, for the opportunity thou hast given me, and this beautiful land we’ve shaped together.. The United States of America stepped in to aid their neighbour, sending US marines and soldiers in an invading force of about 1,500 men. The fighting didn’t take long, only 28 American soldiers were killed and 70 Haitian soldiers opposed to over 200 rebels. The Haitian government had regained control of the country, though it remained occupied by the USA due to remaining political instability. By October 5th, most fighting had died away and American soldiers were garrisoned across the island, including the capital… and the seat of government. No corrupt presidents could be allowed to ruin this country no more, so the US Army took control of the nation until they could find a suitable new president. Of course this had to be someone who understood the United States’ interests in Haiti… For now though, Haiti would remain a place where there was no government except that of general Shelton and the US Army’s 1,500 soldiers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Governance Office, Lincoln, Nebraska (?) October 15th Recently, the citizens of Nebraska, the large majority of which had German heritage, had been complaining to the governor of Nebraska to permit a referendum for changing the state’s name. A first referendum had proven that a majority of Nebraskan citizens did in fact want a name change. A second referendum had shown that the favourite optional new name was ‘New Hanover’. While the governor remained hesitant, he eventually saw himself forced to further the issue to be voted on in congress. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- War Industries Board, Washington DC, October 31st, 1915 To further the mobilization programme, the Council of National Defense formed the War Industries Board as a government agency to coordinate the purchasing of war supplies and equipment between the War Department and the Navy Department as well as the producers of said supplies and equipment. Combined with this, the annual budget for the Council of National Defense sees an expansion to account for the greater purchases of equipment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Food Administration, Washington DC, November 31st, 1915 As a joint effort between the ministry of Agriculture and the Council of National Defense, the United States Food Administration is founded to ensure sufficient food supply and production for a nation with a growing army. 18. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Early 1915 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC January 1st, 1915 President Roosevelt’s New Year’s party was in full swing, down the hallway was where all the guests were partying. Many prominent figures were amongst them, Henry Ford, Robert La Follette, John Rockefeller, Charles Evan Hughes, Calvin Coolidge and many more. The First Lady, Edith Roosevelt was entertaining the guests and keeping an eye out while the President himself, along with the vice president and other prominent Progressives, withdrew to the oval office for a private conversation and a toast. The five men sat down, Theodore Roosevelt, Hiram Johnson, Victor Murdock, Gifford Pinchot and John Parker. After a maid had brought in some champagne and left again, Roosevelt stood up and gave a toast. “To progress!” He said with a grin before the other four repeated him and chinked their glasses. After some talking about last year’s achievements and the plans for next year, Murdock, Pinchot and Parker left the president and vice-president alone and went back to the partying. “Now then, Hiram… Now we can speak about the real secret matters, hm?” Roosevelt said with a grin, Johnson nodded and took another drink from his champagne. “The Black Chamber’s first operations is what you speak of I assume?” “Mhm! I’d call London a success, what about you, partner?” “Definitely! I’d say that went just about our way.” Johnson agreed, pouring Roosevelt some more champagne. “So what about the plans we passed onto Bielaski and Yardley before Christmas? Any updates?” Asked Theodore. “Bielaski told me that our further plans for the Banana Wars have been put into action… We should be getting news about Havana in a few months. The conference with Honduras and Co. is projected to be planned somewhere in the summer, the same goes for the Haiti plan. We’ll put that into motion in July.” Theodore Roosevelt grinned his typical grin. “Excellent! So what about Europe?” “Yardley told me they’re still working on that. German code is one of their top priorities at the moment. Though we should be seeing more action from that department later in the year. The British project is obviously still underway, though I’m afraid I can’t give much more news about that currently...” Roosevelt nodded, thinking in silence for a moment. “And Russia?” Johnson laughed. “The Russians are better at tearing themselves up than we are...” Roosevelt snickered. “Fair enough partner, fair enough… Happy new year!” William Taft stood in the hallway with some other Republicans, he wasn’t paying attention to what Henry Ford was saying, gazing off at the door to the oval office, knowing who were inside there. “No-one else is in the room where it happens, the room where it happens, the room where it happens….” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White House, Washington DC & Wilson Residence, Princeton, New Jersey February 5th, 1915 Vice-President Johnson was giving President Roosevelt an update on what had been happening between the leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties in the past week, it ain’t pretty… “Taft confronts Wilson, privately calls him “Dixie bastard” in his taunts,” “Say what?” Roosevelt raised a brow. “Wilson published his response...” “An open letter to the fat, arrogant, anti-charismatic, national embarrassment known as former president William Taft. The man’s irrational, he claims that I’m in league with France in some vast international intrigue. Son of a gun, please! You wouldn’t know what I’m doing, you’re always going berserk, but you never show up to work. Give my regards to Helen Taft next time you write about my lack of moral compass, at least I do my job up in this rumpus. The line’s behind me, I crossed it again, well that Republican lost it again. ‘Aww’... Such a rough life, better run to your wife, now the boss’ with the real boss again. Let me ask you a question; who sits at your desk while you call it quits? They were calling you a **** in ‘06 and you haven’t done anything new since! You nuisance with no sense! You will die of irrelevance! Go ahead: you can call me the devil, you aspire to my level, you aspire to malevolence! Say hi to the Roosevelts, and their spies all around me, maybe they can confirm. I don’t care if I kill my career with this letter, I’m confining you to one term: You fat motherf-” “Okay, enough!” Roosevelt interrupted with a deep sigh. He understood now what all the disorder was about. “He’s out of control!” “No sir! It’s fine.” Hiram Johnson said with a somewhat cheeky grin. “Wilson has made a fool of himself, and he destroyed the only significant member of the Republican party...” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Havana, La Habana, Protectorate of Cuba, March 21st, 1915 Lowkey political moves are made between Washington DC and the American puppet government in Havana, strengthening ties between the mothernation and it’s protectorate. This is to make it more possible for the Protectorate of Cuba to be reintegrated by the United States as a territory. The US government spends sizeable funds in investments in the island - mainly in the sugar production, American radio stations and newspapers (translated to Spanish) are introduced all over the island. English and American History are made mandatory subjects for highschool students from next year onward. Every friday, a patriotic speech from the is played on the new Cuban radio channel, a form of propaganda for democracy and the friendship of Cuba and the USA. Furthermore, free movement of people and goods is enacted between Cuba and the USA, with a passport control being the only remaining border between the two nations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Washington Barracks, Washington DC, May 13th, 1915 As a part of the U.S. military mobilization effort, the army is further modernized, up to the standards of the armies of the warring powers in Europe. Trade deals for equipment and supplies had been established with nations on both sides of the war, and thus it was a perfect opportunity to send some researchers and engineers along with the transport of goods, to take a look at the equipment the Europeans were rockin’. The French government even stated they’d be open towards the Americans checking out their latest artillery pieces to see if improvements could be made. While experts continue studying European equipment, research reports are sent back home for the military’s engineers to study and act upon. 19. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Late 1914 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- US Congress, Washington DC, August 23rd, 1914 President Theodore Roosevelt stood before congress. The noise started to settle down as the matter at hand was starting. There were very important matters to be discussed today. On one side of the room stood Taft, representing the Republicans, on the other side stood Wilson, representing the Democrats. Roosevelt, Johnson and the rest of the Progressive party had decided to take a neutral stance on the matter, seeing how this was something for the President to decide. “The issue on the table:” Roosevelt announced. “The Entente is beyond the verge of war with the Central Powers. Now do we provide aid and volunteers to our French friends, or do we stay out of it? Remember, my decision on this matter is not subject to congressional approval. The only person you have to convince... Is me. Senator Wilson, you have the floor sir.” Wilson started right away. “I call you all back to the birth of our nation. When we were on death’s door, when we were needy… We made a promise, we signed a treaty. We needed money and guns and half a chance, who provided those funds?” “France...” murmered Thomas Marshall who sat behind Wilson, loud enough for people to hear, causing various Democrats to make remarks of agreement. Wilson continued “In return they didn’t ask for land, only a promise that we’d lend a hand and stand with them if they fought against oppressors.. And we’re quite late, but now is the time to stand! I know that Senator Taft here would rather not have this debate, but I’ll remind you: he is NOT secretary of State! He knows nothing of loyalty!” “Nothing!” Yelled some democratic senator in the back, causing Roosevelt to glance in his direction with a glare. Wilson continued with his insults “Smells like new money, dresses like fake royalty.. Desperate to rise to his former station, everything he does betrays the ideals of our nation!” A loud “Ooh!” sounded from the democrats, as well as a few progressives who didn’t like Taft. “Hey and if you don’t know, now you know, Mr. President...” said Wilson with a grin. Roosevelt rolled with his eyes and nodded. “Thank you, Senator Wilson… Senator Taft, your response...” There was a moment of silence on Taft’s side. “C’mon...” “Get him..” were some of the incentives heard amongst the Republicans. Suddenly Taft slammed his fist onto the desk. “You must be out of your GODDAMN mind if you think, the President is going to bring the nation to the brink, of meddling in the middle of a military mess, a game of chess, where France is Queen and Kingless! We signed that treaty more than ages ago! Time to let the French go ‘head and face their own foe! Now, Mister Francophile, do you call those insults a thread? You’re gonna have to get real and fill my head with lead if you want to see me filled with dread!” Taft yelled at Wilson, his response wasn’t stylish to say the least, but it got the point across. Roosevelt intervened “Enough, Senator Taft is right!” “Mister President-” Wilson started before Roosevelt motioned for him to remain silent “This war is not our fight!” “But sir, do we not fight for freedom?” Wilson complained. “Sure, when the French figure out how to lead ‘em...” “Their generals are leading!” “Their generals are making a mess, there’s a difference! Frankly it’s a little disquieting you would let your ideals blind you to reality. Johnson.” “Ready sir.” said the vice president. “Draft a statement of neutrality.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fort Lafayette, New York City, New York, September 7th, 1914 Fort Lafayette was demoted to solely being an ammunition storage in 1897, on this day, that decision was reversed though. All over the United States, mobilization began to slowly be planned out. Fort Lafayette for example became a training camp and recruitment center for New Yorkers who would later be transported to other forts and camps all over the Union. Military spending was gradually increased as the war in Europe got more fowl by the day, and the United States started arming itself just in case war came knocking on Heaven’s door. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wall Street Stock Exchange, New York City, New York, October 15th, 1914 There went Benjamin Franklin, multiple hundreds of times to be exact. 100 dollar bills were becoming more common than ever at the Stock Market in NYC. Capitalism was at it’s finest here as usual, but on the other side, the Stock Exchange was trading blood money nowadays. More and more companies in the USA were starting to make a profit from the war in Europe. The American government had somewhat supported this, knowing that there was a good opportunity in the war for the American economy, and thus they had helped arms companies in reaching out to the warring nations in the old world. Multiple of these nations had quickly agreed to a variety of deals on weapons, supplies and resources and American companies were starting to make their sales to the fronts in Europe. War Profiteering had begun. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The White House, Washington DC, November 1st, 1914 In November 1914, Theodore Roosevelt announced his plans for the second part of his third term as president. His plan, which he called “The Second Square Deal”, named after the successful and very popular prequel, was ambitious, but he said he didn’t see it likely to make all of the plan happen. “It doesn’t matter if I finish the plan or not though. For the plan will see benefit for all of our nation, and my successor will recognize that, and thus will see to it that it gets finished. I have faith in that, as I have faith in our government, even in dire times like these.” The Second Square Deal included, but wasn’t limited to: -Trustbusting and disassembling hurtful monopolies -The founding of both more Natural Parks throughout the country, as well as ‘reservates’ for the remaining Native American tribes where they may live in peace, undisturbed by our fast-changing world. -Greater development of the Pacific, Caribbean and Philippine territories. -The “Uncle Sam’s Schools” programme, that aims to improve the quality of education both in the states and territories. -Further integration of the state of Jefferson and infrastructural development for the state’s citizens and companies. -Formation of the previously proposed GACA. -Voting rights for women. -Further introduction of laws regarding consumer protection. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actions -Lend lease is offered to France. [FRANCE] -Partial Mobilization starts. [MOD] -The reforms from the Second Square Deal are worked on getting through congress. [MOD] -TBC [MOD] -Delegations from France and Germany are invited to Washington DC to have a talk about the importance of peace with uncle Teddy. [GERMANY] [FRANCE]

  21. Spring and Summer of 1603 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp Spring went by peacefully in the colony of Trompsylvania, the soldiers returned home in May from the war in Hanseong, no deaths, only a few sick men. Their families were delighted to see them again, though were sad the war was lost. Many felt pity for the Neu Brandenburgers and they convinced President Tromp to invite any Neu Brandenburgers that were still alive and didn't want to live under Korean rule, to come to Trompsylvania where they could get their own neighbourhood in Nieuw Rotterdam. As word was caught of a disease ravaging the Haudenosaunee, President Tromp ordered for one of the colony's two doctors to be sent up north with a few men to see if he could cure some of their native friends. Extreme caution is to be taken as not to catch the disease themselves, whatever it may be. ---The Dutch Proposal--- In the midst of summer, President Tromp gets a letter from the outposts at he mouth of the Tjessepieck bay, Dutch ships had been spotted in the distance a few hours earlier and were now approaching the bay, were the ships to be stopped or let into the bay, towards Nieuw Rotterdam? President Tromp ordered for the ships to be let through, ordering for vice President Joris Wasserman to come to his office at once wherever he may be. Towards the evening, the Dutch ships approached New Rotterdam, Tromp leaned on his walking cane, vicepresident Wasserman at his left side, treasury secretary Koopman on his right side. They watched the Dutchmen dock one of their ships, their captain coming forth to greet the men. The five men had dinner that evening, secretary of state Thomas Janssen joining in, and discussed the matter of why the Dutchmen were here with a few ships, carrying about 150 peasants with them as well as a bunch of rifles. It came down to the Dutch Republic wishing to support Trompsylvania, in return for most of the fur the colony produced being shipped to Holland, for free... The next morning, the cabinet of the small colony met in the town hall of New Rotterdam, the weak president Tromp sat silent in front of the gathered men as vice-president Wasserman spoke for him: "My finest gentlemen.. You could've been anywhere in the world today, but you're here with us in New Rotterdam's cabinet. Are you ready, for a cabinet meeting?!” Wasserman called out, he was a popular fellow, a bit of a showman, he'd been quite the cultural figure in his younger days. The gathered men all knocked on the wood of their benches, excited to hear what they were called in for. "The issue on the table... The Dutch government's plan to assume our fur production in exchange for continued support. Secretary Janssen, you have the floor, sir...” For over an hour, a heated debate followed between Secretary Janssen and Secretary Koopman. Eventually Tromp and Wasserman had heard enough, and like usually, they went with their little favourite, Tromp's right hand man: Alexander Koopman, accepting the Dutch proposal. As the meeting was ended, everyone started standing up and leaving, amidst the slight chaos, Thomas Janssen stepped up to Alexander Koopman, prodding him on his chest. "So quick-witted..” "Alas, I admit it..” Koopman squinted. "I bet you'd be quite a lawyer...” "I could get my defendants acquitted..” "Yeah.. Well someone ought to remind you-” "What?” Koopman asked softly with a glare. "You're nothing without Wasserman behind you...” And just as Alexander Koopman was about to say something, Wasserman opened the door of the room he and Tromp went into. "Koopman!” Alexander Koopman gasped, glancing back. "Daddy's calling...” Thomas Janssen whispered, patting Koopman's shoulder before leaving with an evil grin. -Actions- AP = 0 current + 5 base + 3 from settlements + 10 (2 markets) + 2 from 1 FUR + 1 from trade + 5 (From WHITE PORT) – 2 AP (fur sent to Netherlands) - 0 AP army upkeep - 0 AP navy upkeep = 24 AP FS = 1 base + 2 from farms + 2 from fertile lands - 1 (selling to WHITE PORT) = 4 FS Population modifier = 5% base + 0.1% from farms + 0.1% from fertile lands = 5.2% Population = 2605 + 150 * 1.052 = 2898 1 Militia 1 Arquebusiers 1 Small Freighter A message is spread to the Neu Brandenburgers in Hanseong, giving them the offer of their own place within Trompsylvania. 22. Spring and Summer of 1603 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp The men were done for. They'd been attempting attacks and sabotage actions on the Hanseong people for half a year now, but to no avail, protection was too strict. Sure, they'd managed to light a few farms on fire now and then, but that'd been it. And now the Vinlandish fleet retreated back north, the siege of Hanseong was about over, and the 100 militiamen from Trompsylvania were sitting idle in their wooden camp in the forest. They'd been living off of dire rations, some of them were sick, many of them were bored and just all of them were done with the fight. Neu Brandenburg had lost, it was clear. There'd be nothing they could do about it anymore. At the beginning of spring, they had to make the call, the way home would be doable again now that the snow was melting... Would they retreat? Or would they fight? After the soldiers, all of them, commanders and footmen alike, discussed the matter one night, the answer became clear. When they spotted a Hanseong scout in the distance the next morning, one of them climbed up on the parapet of their camp, frantically waving a white handkerchief... The Trompsylvanian militia would offer white peace to Hanseong, they'd withdraw from the Hanseong conquest of Neu Brandenburg, no demands would be made from either side. -Actions- AP = 1 current + 5 base + 3 from settlements + 10 (2 markets) + 2 from 1 FUR + 1 from trade + 5 (From WHITE PORT) - 0 AP army upkeep - 0 AP navy upkeep = 27 AP FS = 1 base + 2 from farms + 2 from fertile lands - 1 (selling to WHITE PORT) = 4 FS Population modifier = 5% base + 0.1% from farms + 0.1% from fertile lands = 5.2% Population = 2376 + 100 * 1.052 = 2605 1 Militia 1 Small Freighter A white peace is offered to [HANSEONG] 26 AP is invested in (Lodge: 26/40 AP)

  24. Trompsylvania Virtus libertas est, et independentiae Autumn and Winter of 1602 Current Leader: Mr. President, Cornelis Tromp Trompsylvania was doing alright for itself, the colony was developing rapidly, the population was growing steadily, the economy was booming and food was plentiful. The Dutch settlers had made friends with the Haudenosaunee to the north and formed a pact of non-agression, furthermore, the natives had offered to protect the colony if they were to be attacked. Money was coming in plentifully, both from production as well as trade, a lot of which was done with Wittehaven, where a lot of food was exported to. All in all, the small colony was blooming, the only major issue was their envoys to the old world not returning, which bothered the President. The city of Nieuw-Rotterdam in the distance with Trompsylvanian farms in the foreground, right on the Tjessepieck bay. Various reforms were made within the colony's governing system, Tromp's health wasn't making a turn for the better, so he wished to leave his nation as best as possible before his seemingly inevitable passing. He appointed two secretaries to function as a sort of advisors, the secretary of state, and the secretary of the treasury, modelled after the Dutch Stadtholder and Councilpensionary. The latter of which was a man called Alexander Koopmans, a Dutch trader and banker from origin. He'd proven to know all there was to know about trade, money and finance and his policies made the colony's wealth soar to new heights, something that drew attention to him among the citizens. On December 1st, he opened the new Grand Market, a plan of his own, and on the 5th (Saint Nicholas' Feast), the market was already full of stands, primarily selling things for the holiday season. Tromp had taken a liking to him and unofficially made him his right hand man, something that'd inevitably bother the secretary of state, Thomas Janssen, if he wasn't gone to the Haudenosaunee territory, learning about their structure of state and laws. A vicepresident was also appointed; Joris Wasserman, who used to be a general in the eighty years war, and had always been a close friend of Tromp. The men of the upper class of Trompsylvania at a party, with Cornelis Tromp himself sitting in the middle. The final of the three ships that the colonists used to get to Amerika was now being sent back to Europe, a delegation on board. They were to find more settlers like the previous two ships that had disappeared. This time a different approach would be taken though, offering to make New Rotterdam a port of export of American goods for the Dutch Republic, giving an offer no Dutchman could resist: profitable trade. Hope was put into the last ship that could give the colony contact with the old world, the last of their ships capable of crossing the Atlantic. 25. United States of America E Pluribus Unum Early 1913 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The White House, Washington DC, January 20th, 1913 Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt with the Progressive “Bull Moose” Party had won the elections by a slight margin last year, and earlier today, Roosevelt was sworn into office once again, the very first president ever to have a third term in office. And already he introduced something new. The so called “State of the Union”, where he spoke to Congress and the press about his plans for the year, replacing the former “Annual message to the congress”. The Progressives, the Republicans and the Democrats had debated over this for a long while, but eventually agreed that this was more efficient in these times and were a more proper way to hold the annual adress. A big topic in this State of the Union speech was the controversial elections of the year prior and Roosevelt’s part in what was happening in Mexico, to which he said the following: “I am well aware, my dear fellow Americans, that you all have mixed feelings about what has been happening in our nation as of recent times. And I know that a lot of you would have rather not seen me stand before congress once again today. But I ask you, have faith, have faith like you did those other two terms, those two terms that brought great progress to our Union. Me and my fellow Progressives will not let you down. Nor will the other two parties with which we’ll work together as best as possible. Believe you can, and you’re halfway there. That’s what you’re used to hearing from me and that’s what you’ll hear from me again. Because yes, we can!” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tidal Basin, Washington DC, February 15th, 1913 After a month or two of hard work, the 3000 cherry trees, sent to the Union by the Empire of Japan, have found their places throughout the capital of Washington DC. Most of these trees were planted along the Tidal Basin, but many of which were also planted next to other monuments in the city. Furthermore, one has been planted in every state capital, 48 in total, and one extra in the garden of the Roosevelt residence, claimed by the first lady in the end of January, for she “truly loved the romantic and joyful colours of these exotic trees which were just about to bloom”. Many citizens as well as painters have taken an interest in the beautiful pink trees and the parks in the capital are fuller than ever. Furthermore, the small Bonsai tree that was sent to Theodore Roosevelt directly now stands proudly on top of a drawer in the oval office. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Congress, Washington DC, March 5th, 1913 On march 3rd, over 5000 women from all over the U.S. as well as abroad marched through Washington DC in the “Woman Suffrage Parade of 1913”, led by Inez Milholland on horseback. This, combined with women gaining the right to vote in various other nations all around the globe, was enough encouragement for the Progressive Party to put forth a motion in congress, pleading for voting rights for women. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, April 1st, 1913 By the start of April, all troops along the American-Mexican border had returned to garrisoning the border’s forts. The Rio de Janeiro conference had failed, not like anyone should’ve expected otherwise from nations like Brazil or Mexico. The U.S. had offered Mexico peace on favourable terms, but the Mexicans would not have it. Roosevelt stated: “I am a man that will honour his nobel peace prize. But I am also a man that won't simply let his fellow Americans be attacked. (...) I say that we would be willing to work together with el Presidente señor Caranza in dealing with these bandit gangs, though we do expect reparation payments to all the damage done to American towns and farmsteads by said Mexican gangs.” While the Mexican government refused and all delegates left the conference room soon after, the President has not ordered for further action, but instead for the ranchers and possible outlaws, the so-called ‘cowboys’, to return home and for the U.S. army to garrison the forts on the border. Furthermore, a telegram known as the “Hay-Telegram”, named after the American secretary of state, is sent to the Mexican government, stating: “To el Presidente, señor Caranza: The last of the American troops have returned to the forts on our side of the border today and will stay there until further notice. We expect no further actions and in return we will take no further actions. Nobody will be allowed to cross the border into the Union, but will instead be shot on sight, mind you. As far as we are concerned, this border conflict is over, we hope you settle on the same solution. Be sure to keep the ‘banditos’ under control, we are willing to help you with this whenever the Mexican government decides to pay for damage done to American property during bandito raids. If you or a delegate of yours wishes to further discuss this issue, we ask you to arrange a meeting in Washington DC. -Theodore Roosevelt Jr, President of the United States of America” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Manilla, Luzon, Philippines , May 18th, 1913 The US government makes a deal with private investors for improving the infrastructure throughout the Philippines territory. More and better roads are to be built for the expanding American car market, various ports are expanded throughout the archipelago and on Luzon, a railway is constructed between Manilla and Baguio. Aside from the deal with private investors, the US government spends a sizeable sum of money in other fields of developing the islands. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Congress, Washington DC, June 14th, 1913 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WySzEXKUSZw Part of the Progressive Party’s campaigning plan was the greater exploitation of resources from the Alaska territory. The Klondike gold rush at the end of the last century had drawn thousands of people to the northernmost territory of the USA, now more and more people began to show interest in further developing the territory and perhaps even integrating it into the Union as the 49th state. The main goal of this further development were resources, for Alaska had proven to be rich of such. There was still a sizeable amount of gold left, as well as large deposits of iron, copper, coal, oil and gas, not to mention the enormous amounts of fish and crab that were just offshore or the inexhaustible amount of lumber. The Progressive Party this puts forth another motion in Congress, this time in cooperation with the.. THE DEMOCRATS?! WHAT?! Roosevelt and vice-president Johnson knew that the democratic party would oppose their plan for further development of Alaska for greater resource exploitation, so Johnson came up with an alternative plan… “Ah! Mr. President...” Roosevelt turned around and eyed Taft with little interest. “Mr. Taft, sir..” “I was wondering if maybe we could confer, sir?” “No...” “Ya know La Follette?” “Yeah..” Roosevelt said, squinting at Taft as he walked through the hall at the Congress building. “They caught him as a drunkard in a Brooklyn bar, I fear that he’s no longer a threat... ” Taft smirked lightly. “And all he had to do was drink..” “Yeah that’s a lot less work..” Roosevelt frowned. Taft replied “You ought to give it a try..” “Ha!” “Now how’re ya gonna get ya gold plan through?..” Taft asked with a raised brow as he halted, with Roosevelt turning to him “I guess I’m gonna finally have to listen to you...” “Really?” Roosevelt puffed up his cheeks to look fat like Taft “Talk less… Smile more...” “Haha...” Taft replied, with the slightest bit of honest amusement. “Do whatever it takes to get my plan on the congress-floor...” Taft frowned “Now Marshall and Wilson are merciless..” Roosevelt shrugged “Well.. Hate the sin, love the sinner...” He said before proceeding down the hall again, over to an open door where Thomas Marshall was waiting. “Roosevelt.” Marshall said. “I’m sorry Taft, I gotta go...” “But!” Taft glared, pacing after Roosevelt “Decisions are happening over dinner..” Roosevelt said before Marshall closed the door behind them, in Taft’s face…. Two Democrats and a President, walk into a room, diametrically opposed foes… They emerge with a compromise, having opened doors that were previously closed, bros. The President emerges with unprecedented material power, resources he can exploit however he wants. The Democrats emerge with the 49th state, and here’s the pièce de résistance: no-one else was in the room where it happened, the room where it happened, the room where it happened. No-one else was in the room where it happened, the room where it happened, the room where it happened. No-one really knows how the game is played, the art of the trade, how the sausage gets made.., We just assume that it happens… But no-one else is in the room where it happens. Wilson claims: “Theodore was on my doorstep one day, in distress and disarray..” Wilson claims: “Teddy said ‘I have nowhere else to turn’, and basic’ly begged me to join the fray.. ” Wilson claims: “I approached Marshall and said ‘I know ya hate him, but let’s hear what he has to say..’” Wilson claims: “Well, I arranged the meeting, I arranged the menu, the venue, the seating..” But! No-one else was in the room where it happened, the room where it happened, the room where it happened. No-one else was in the room where it happened, the room where it happened, the room where it happened. No-one really knows how the parties get to ‘yes’. The pieces that are sacrificed in ev’ry game of chess.. We just assume that it happens… But no-one else is in the room where it happens… Marshall pursed his lips when Wilson came to him with the news of his plan with Roosevelt. ”Maybe we could solve one problem with another, and win a victory for the southerners, in other words-” “O-ho!” Wilson smirked, interrupting him. “A quid pro quo?” Marshall tilted his head. “I suppose...” “Wouldn’t you like another southern name on show?” “Actually I would...” Wilson grinned widely. “Well I propose ‘Jefferson’.” Said Thomas Marshall. “And you’ll provide him his votes?” Woodrow tilted his head. “Well we’ll see how it goes...” “Let’s go!” “My God!” Taft exclaimed. In God we trust! But we’ll never really know what got discussed. Click-boom, then it happened… “And no-one else was in the room where it happened..” Taft grumbled as the door got locked before him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actions -Motion is put forth in Congress, pleading for voting for women [MOD] -Cowboys are sent home and the US army simply garrisons border forts.
