  1. Traditional Haeseni Dress and Attire 6th of Jula and Piov, 328 | 6th of Malin’s Welcome, 1775 Coats and Furs Khanbej (Khan = Coat, Bej = Long) The khanbej is a traditional, high-quality coat, commonly worn by Haensemen of high standing. The coats are generally rather long, sometimes decorated with detailed embroidery or patterning. The khanbej is a favored clothing item of Ruskan descent, hailing back hundreds of years. Although worn out of necessity in the cold northern climate, the garment also displays power, masculinity, and wealth. Darskholv (Darusz = Furry, Kholv = Cold) The darskholv is a common clothing piece worn by both men and women throughout the kingdom. Both fur stoles and fur coats are included in the generalized term, ‘darskholv.’ These garments are worn to stave off the biting cold during frigid Haeseni winters. Generally tailored of rabbit, fox, or mink fur, they offer not only protection from the cold, but unique fashion within the Haeseni courts. Men and women of high status and skill may wear darskholvz of wolf pelt to display honor and bravery. The darskholv, just like the khanbej, was also a historically Ruskan vestment. Dresses and Gowns Sanguss (Sansk = Dress, Guss = Poor) The sanguss is a traditional dress worn by Haeseni women of low status. These dresses, generally sewn with inexpensive or cheap fabrics, are beautiful nonetheless. The dresses feature distinct cinching strings across the bodice, and ribbon bows around the waist. The positioning of the ribbon, if worn properly, is important to note. A woman with a bow-tied against her right hip is displaying her married status, a woman with a bow tied across her middle may be undecided or courting, and a woman with a bow on her left hip remains unspoken for. This garment is traditional of Hansetian dress, passed down through generations of Haeseni women. Sanbej (Sansk = Dress, Bej = Long) The sanbej is the expensive counterpart to the sanguss. These fine gowns, worn by women of high standing and wealth, are common among the royalty and nobility within Hanseti-Ruska. They are finely tailored with materials such as silk, satin, and linen. These dresses do not generally feature the classic bow of the sanguss, and instead, don classier patterns and embroidering. These gowns are most often worn at floor-length, and consist of multiple layers of fabric, helping to insulate against the chill. Hats, Shoes, and Otherwise Heusjet (Heut = Hat) The heusjet, known in common as the beret, is the most commonly worn hat in the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska. These are usually worn by men, but women may also be seen donning these hats. The heusjet is a more recent addition to tradition Haeseni garb, becoming more common within the last century, and has recently been added to the uniforms of the Haense Royal Army. Baijlejz (Baijlej = Boot) Baijlejz are the most commonly worn footwear, having been crafted and sold for hundreds of years. These boots are made of sturdy leather and can range from ankle-high to more than halfway up the shin. The soles of these boots are generally made from maple or elmwood and are well polished and sealed. A wide range of options can be seen in these shoes, and are worn by both men and women. Anzkhanz (Anz = Hands, Khan = Coat) Anzkhan is simply the New Marian word for ‘glove.’ Usually made out of leather or wool, anzkhanz are worn throughout the winter months to protect the hands from the icy cold. These small accessories are generally fairly simple in appearance, worn more so for practicality than a sense of fashion. Plate and Uniforms Platen (Platen = Plate Armor) Platen is mostly worn by the nobility of the Kingdom, the majority of which represents the colors of each House. Consisting of more expensive material, platen is not seen as often, unless worn by a soldier of higher ranking, or the aforementioned nobility. Due to the colder climate of Hanseti-Ruska the armor is typically insulated and worn with varying amounts of fur. Junen (Junen = Uniform) Junen is adorned most often by the Royal Army of the Kingdom, though can be seen within the levies of the past and present. The current junen of the Kingdom represents the coat of arms of the King, displaying a red and white background with the colors of House Barbanov forming the shape of a shield. Published Posthumously, Her Royal Highness, Amelya Valeriya Barbanov, Princess of Hanseti-Ruska (( Thank you to: @NJBB for help writing the bottom section @Unbaed for the artwork for the ‘Sanguss’ @garentoft for help with the New Marian words ))

  3. The Loss of Haeseni Cultures Restoring historical Haeseni culture to the highlander people 4th of Tov and Yermey, 319 E.S. | 4th of Sun’s Smile, 1766 [!] A depiction of a young Amelya Barbanov milling over her notes. * Through my studies within the Royal Academy of Saint Catherine as well as private tutoring throughout my childhood, I’ve come to realize that the culture within our great kingdom’s highlander roots has begun to fade away over time. This document I’ve written encompasses the loss of both recent and ancient cultural aspects that we’ve since forgotten; its aim is to remind the public of their ancestry and breathe their customs back to life. * * The Speech of the Highlands A strong, well-known feature of strong northern men is the distinct gruffness and drawl to their tone. Though these accents have faded over the centuries of our kingdom’s great existence, remnants of the past remain within some of our nobility. The northern men of House Baruch, in particular, retain the strongest northern and Marian-like accent in our time. This accent includes deepness of tone, the omission of hard ‘H’ sounds as well as ‘T’s. Though the return of such accents to our people as a whole is unlikely, it’s important to recollect upon the changes in our kingdom. Our strong, Raev roots are the building blocks for the individuality and great history of Hanseti-Ruska, and we must acknowledge such. * * Traditional Dress Haeseni dress has always differed largely from that of our Crownlander counterparts. This is mainly due to the major change in climates between our cities; our own homeland being far colder than that of the Orenians. It has always been custom for highlanders to wear furs and cloaks for insulation purposes, but we seem to have forgotten other elements and trends from the past. Colorful garb has always been a beautiful element of Haeseni style, and one that we seem to have left behind in recent years. Old paintings depict colorful and spectacular articles of clothing, rather than the shabby, colorless overcoats that have flooded our dirt streets. Though black clothing is generally preferred in today’s society, the lack of color and individuality among our gowns and tailcoats has reached its peak. It’s time to throw out the musty potato sacks and make room for wonderful colors. Not only have we grown distant from colorful clothing, but also accessories worn in the past. Berets were worn frequently, The Blue Berets during the War of Two Emperors were a notable group who wore such hats. Thanks to the work of our king, in recent years berets have made a strong return in the uniforms of the Haense Royal Army (HRA). [!] The late Otto Sigmar circa 1760 revisiting the beret fashion style of his youth. ((Art by Unbaed)) * * Haeseni Cuisine Though Carrion Black has been a key staple of our drinking habits for decades, we seem to have forgotten the old Haeseni treat of rum-spiked cocoa. An important recipe to the women of House Barbanov for generations, hot cocoa quickly made its way to the bars of common-folk and nobility alike. As with any beverage, the northern men of Haense spiked the favorable drink. Rum, the sweet alcohol created from distilling molasses, was a natural option. This warm, soothing drink became a beloved drink of soldiers weathering the cold in war camps, a warming beverage to enjoy while spending late nights drinking in the tavern, and a welcome gift to a home-coming husband or son upon returning from duty. A vague recipe is as listed below. Haeseni Spiked Cocoa ‘Recipe’ - Hot milk - Cocoa powder - Sugar - Rum [!] A painting of the Markev tavern on one particularly active evening. Recently, four traditional berries have made their way back into Haeseni cuisine. These fruits, generally known as Prikaz berries, are found upon rocks and can be used to create a variety of beverages and foods. Wild Prikaz is commonly used to make Prikaz Tea. Red Prikaz is used to make Prikaz Wine, a staple beverage within the kingdom, and to make jams. Hansetian Prikaz can be used in cooking, or sun-dried and eaten alone. Royal Prikaz is fermented to create Edeylvise, a traditional red wine. These berries are delectable and have many general uses for the Haeseni people. ((See: https://www.lordofthecraft.net/forums/topic/191294-prikaburren-prikaz-berry-national-fruit-of-haense/)) * * With these points, I leave my devout readers to ponder the ancient histories of this great kingdom. It is our highlander blood that differentiates our honorable people from the rest of humanity, and thus our customs must differ as well. * Signed, Her Royal Highness, Amelya Valeriya Barbanov, Princess of Hanseti-Ruska

The aging woman slowly sinks down into a seat, her eyes shifting from the parchment to the blank wall before her. “I’m proud of you, Isaak. You died for your king and your nation. I’ll miss you, but you finally will be able to meet your father.” A quiet sob escapes the mother as she stands, moving off to find the rest of her family.

The children are quiet, sensing their mother’s unhappiness; watching her with wide, innocent eyes. Naryn was born in Caras Eldar. She was raised in a small, ratty house in a poor area of the city. She was the youngest of her family, having an older sister and both parents. Naryn’s mother was a weaver, named Elyra. Her father, Rodian, a hunter. Their small family was not a part of a pod, so they were left to fend for themselves. Naryn was always more of her mother’s child, helping her mum with the weaving while her older sister and father ventured into the forests. Naryn and her mother relied on their catch to keep the family fed, as their work didn’t bring in much money. However, the income did provide just enough to pay the taxes, and other small family necessities. Thus, about once a fortnight, Naryn would carry her mother’s work to the merchants in town, and barter for as much coin as she could. However, on one particularly nice night, things went awry. Elyra had sent Naryn out to sell the weaving per usual, but she had done it later than normal, just as dusk was beginning to fall. Naryn thought nothing of this until approximately half way to the merchants’ stalls, a middle-aged human man stepped into her path. The streets were empty, civilians had started home before the sun had begun to set. As he drew a knife, Naryn noticed others in the shadows. The group said nothing, but before Naryn could fully realize what had happened, she was gagged and bound and on her way out of the city. Naryn’s sister would later find the weaving discarded in the street, after Naryn had long been taken away. Naryn spent many years of her life in slavery. She never learned her parents proclaimed her dead, and that her sister had been executed before the Emperor.

Alani, like many elves, was born in Caras Eldar. Alani grew up poor in a small, leaning house in a poor area of the city. Her family was not part of a seed, so Alani has no tattoos. Her mother, Elyra, was a weaver, who sold her works of art for a small profit to help the family. Alani’s father was named Roedian. He was a decent hunter, leaving the city at dawn every morning to search for game in the woods. He carried only a bow and a small steel dagger. Most nights he would bring home fresh meat for dinner, then he would skin the game and sell the hide. Some nights, however, Alani and her younger sister Naryn would have a supper of only stale bread. Those were the worst nights. Naryn was 10 years younger than Alani, Naryn took after her mother’s artistic trait, while Alani followed in her father’s footsteps. When Alani turned 20 her father began training her with a bow. She would leave the city with him every morning, and eventually grew to become a more skilled archer than he, and helped to provide for the family. She grew to love bows, and spent most hours of daylight training, and when it got dark she would craft. Between the age of 20 and 45, Alani crafted her bow. She crafted it of sturdy wood and strong but flexible deer sinew. Although Alani had a mostly good childhood, a tragedy struck when Alani was 31 Naryn went missing. She went out one evening to purchase yarn for her mother, but she never returned. The family was in shambles, and really never recovered. After a year, the city law gave up searching and told the family Naryn had probably “passed on.” Alani’s parents accepted this with sorrow, but Alani didn’t believe them. Finally, when Alani was 45, she decided nothing would ever improve if she did nothing about it. She said goodbye to her parents, and left to search for her sister with only her bow and a pack of supplies.
