The Archduchy of Herendul is governed over in the spiritual realm by the Church of the True Faith, whose servant, The Most Rev. Archbishop of Herendul and Metropolitan of Kvaz Castus II, shepherds the Archdiocese of Herendul. Most citizens are followers of Lucienism or Imperial Traditionalism, no registered citizens are noted as followers of the Orthodoxies.

IV. History of the Archduchy

In the dusk of His Imperial Majesty, Horen V's reign, the House Winter was granted the County of Northal as a vassal to the Duke of Hanseti. An ancient house, born out of that oldest land of Aegis, the House Winter was eager to reestablish their rightful place within the peerage of Oren.

In short time, the son of the Count Robert Winter, Edward Winter II, rose to the Orenian privy council as Lord High Steward in the mild frosts of 1436. Soon after, the Count Robert Winter took the head of the privy council as Lord High Chancellor.

The Duke of Hanseti soon turned absentee, and the new King William III of House Horen aimed the Kingdom of Oren towards war with the Kingdom of Ruska and Savoie, ruled by the Carrion Vochna. Still recovering after an attempted assassination on his life, the Horen King wrote an edict excommunicating the Apostolic King of Ruska and Savoie who also was the head of the Church. A war was inevitable, and the dwindling militaries of Oren were doomed.

In the dark of the night, the Lord High Steward Edward Winter II met with the Ruskan leadership and the Lord High Treasurer Silus Horen. It was decided that Silus Horen would take his cousin's throne and Ruska, Savoie, Salvus, and Oren would combine into a constitutional and elective monarchy to avoid war. In attempts to ensure the equal representation of the Orenians, a new Kingdom, Herendul, was created to bolster their voting power in the new government in the spring of 1438.

As such, the Duke of Hanseti was deposed along with the former King of Oren. Edward Winter II was named King of the new state, on account of his father's infirmities as he succumbed to bodily illness. The Kingdom served as a bastion of old-Orenian culture as the Kingdoms to the south bowed to Carrion hegemony and began assuming Ruskan customs and language.

The Kingdoms of Oren and Herendul slowly drifted apart, as the opposing peoples and governments suspected the other of plotting against themselves. With the rebel Sophia Horen raising armies to the West, the human empire was on the verge of a schism. It was only as the first battle of the civil war was glimpsed on the horizon, that the King of Herendul made his decision and reaffirmed his loyalty to the Carrion's Imperial Crown.

The empire united once more, Herendul and Oren fought side by side to repel the rebel forces and the Grand-Kingdom of Urguan, which fought to strip the empire from the Carrion Vochna. The borders of the empire protected, the sister kingdoms settled into their new roles as close allies.

This was not to last, as the Emperor Siegmund Carrion died, and the empire dissolved. The human states were left in a precarious position as the two Kingdoms looked outward to the looming forces on the borders of the human lands. Wary of placing his kingdom under the untested new King Heinrik I of Oren, Edward kept the two Kingdoms separate for the better part of two and a half years. Finally acknowledging the competency of the new Orenian government, the King Edward Winter II of Herendul penned his last edict, merging Herendul under Oren as an Archduchy, comprised of the southern March of Valles and the northern Duchy of Winterlands, which absorbed the County of Savoie, on the 2nd of Amber Cold 1449.

The end of the Kingdom of Herendul marked the end of the longest maintained human monarchy since the fall of the Horen dynasty, but it also marked the beginning of a new age of human unity and brotherhood under the single banner of the Kingdom of Oren. The Age of Five Kings had ended, and the period of Reconstruction had begun in earnest.

The Duchy of Northal is within the Archdiocese of Herendul, and is thus devoutly pledged to the Church of the True Faith. The ducal house of Vekon is known for their service in various religious orders and sects.

IV. History of the Duchy

IV.I. Northal

The County of Northal was originally granted to Robert Winter as Winter's holding as vassal to House Green. When the Duke Green stopped managing his vassals and the Orenian King incited a war against the Ruskans, Northal was split from Oren as the Kingdom of Herendul. The King Edward Winter II held Northal directly as his own lands, and erected a keep there from which he governed his Kingdom.

Still in the dawn of his reign, Edward split Northal into the "Central Baronies" of Verglass, Gren, Frostlake, Wintermont, and Talhill. The County of Eastslope and Skyed were created on either side of the Central Baronies, and the Barony of Wallport was created at Herendul's western frontier. These composed the Crownlands of Herendul, legally recognized as the Duchy of the WInterlands.

While Robert Winter was created Count of Northal immediately following the transition to a Kingdom, this title soon became obsolete as the County functioned as a collective of Crown-held baronies with an absentee Count. The now-defunct House Romulus was placed in direct control of the Barony of Frostlake, which held the former capital keep and functioned as the seat of Northal.

Upon reuniting of Herendul and Oren, the name of the territory's seat was used to create the Duchy of Northal, which was comprised of the former Duchy of the Winterlands, Herendul's Crown territory, and the County of Savoie.

IV.II Savoie

Savoie was originally created as a Prince-Archbishopric in service of the Church of the True Faith. The land functioned as a base of operations for the High Pontiffs themselves, who held Savoie as the center of their secular power. At the time, the Prince-Archbishopric was considered roughly equivalent to an Orenian duchy, although it held no oaths to the imperial crown once Horen V legally split the papacy from the monarchy's control.

In time, the High Pontiff Owyn I took hold of the Church, and began to rule as Prince-Archbishop in the secular sense of the title. He accumulated vassals including, for a time, Edward Winter II in the Viscounty of Bar. The great city of Aldersburg was the capital of the burgeoning church-state, and the Goldmans rose to fame for their economic ventures. Soon Savoie began mingling with their southern Raevir neighbours, and when Horen V's rule ended, they were among the first of the Five Kingdoms to split from the weakened Orenian monarchy.

The Prince-Archbishopric of Savoie now held both a significant population and the might of the Church, and it was only when Owyn I reformed the Prince-Archbishopric and the neighbouring Raevir state into the Kingdom of Ruska that the titles of Savoie were retired in favour of the "Apostolic King of Ruska" that elevated the House Carrion to royal status.

Soon it came that the Orenian King William Horen III exercised the divinity of House Horen to excommunicate the Apostolic King of Ruska, forcing the Kingdoms of Ruska and Oren to the brink of war. In the late of night, the Lord High Steward Edward Winter II called a meeting with the Carrion Vochna and other privy counselors, and united Salvus, Ruska, Oren, and Herendul under the banner of the new-Imperial Oren.

Under the imperial Carrion Vochna, Savoie fell into disuse and the city of Aldersburg and the neighbouring chapel of the True Faith succumbed to a serious of natural disasters and a destructive pillaging by the armies of Setherian. The lands of Savoie returned to forest and marshlands and remained unused until the split of the empire. The lands were granted to the Kingdom of Herendul in thanks for their service in protecting Oren from the rebels. When the Archduchy of Herendul was formed in place of the former Kingdom, the now-County of Savoie was placed within the demesne of the newly created Duchy of Northal. The Duchy was placed under Vectis Vekon II, former Lord Marshall of Herendul, and is poised for a new age of development and progress.

III. Religious Affiliations

While the state religion is the Church of the True Faith, the church has had little success in bringing the Creator's word to the multi-racial frontier-lands of Valles. The Archdiocese of Valles is run by the High Pontiff Lucien II in his capacity of Archbishop of Valles.

IV. History of the March

Centered in the former demesne of the Cloudlands monks, the Orders of Valles were sent to an officer in the Royal Herendulian Army Jonathan Othaman by the King of Herendul, Edward Winter II. The King requested that the wilds of the Cloudlands frontier that formed a Southern border of Malinor, Gronkkston, and the Imperial Orenian state be civilized and brought into the empire.

By uniting the squabbling towns of the Cloudlands valley, the Protectorate of Valles was created with the Lord Protector Jonathan Othaman at its helm. In time, as the fragmented territory stabilized, it was officiated as the Viscounty of Valles. When the Viscounty grew in power and devoted its troops to the Royal Herendulian Army and helped quell the Orenian rebellions, the decision was made to declare the Viscounty with the more appropriate title of March.

Facing Urguan to the south, Ondnarch's chill to the west, and raids from the cowering Orenian rebels from the mountains around the valley, the peaceful people of Valles are forced into the protection of their countryland. With the induction of the Archduchy of Herendul into the Kingdom of Oren, the March has newfound allies in its northern neighbours.

Francesco joins the Herendul for a visit.

Francesco: "Ah, thank you, thank you my good sire!"

Posh Herendul Butler: "Jolly Good Show, Chap! Anything for a Monk of the Priory!"

Francesco: "Aye, well, nothing good like Herendul butter on Herendul toast"

P.H.B: "Dig in!"

Francesco enjoys the toast as he sits in the castle, enjoying the view of Herendul.

"Don't see this everyday, right ole' Butler?"

"Aye."

The sun sets, and another day in Herendul passes. Francesco heads home, enlightened by his visit.

Thank You,

Francesco Boniface.
