Elindor 666 Share Posted July 28, 2014 How about amnesiacs? Are those memories gone, or just hidden to the person with amnesia? Could a mind mage look into the past of an amnesiacs memories? If they can, would the amnesia itself be a mind barrier of sorts? Amnesia would be the most advanced mental barrier possible. The mind believes itself to have forgotten something and it unconsciously does so. Whether or not it can still be read is entirely in the power of the player. If they approve of the reading of their forgotten memories, then yes. If not, then no. The only difference between normal mind melding and catatonic melding is that you use something like hypnosis to make the job easier. Aside from the fact that they are "sleeping" it all functions exactly the same.
tjt810 18 Share Posted July 30, 2014 How about multiple personalities? Are their memories also split? For example, you can't read on personalities memories through the other.
Elindor 666 Share Posted July 30, 2014 How about multiple personalities? Are their memories also split? For example, you can't read on personalities memories through the other. Multiple personality disorder tends to create facades of a whole person. The memories still exist in the brain in their entirety, but likewise with amnesia, it makes for a hell of a mental wall when the brain believes itself to not know them. However with multiple personalities, the most general thing is that all the personalities have all the same memories (except for a few fabricated ones) they just choose to ignore them. So, amnesia is amazing mental barrier; multiple personalities is a really solid one. And by solid I mean quite the opposite, because the nature of the barrier is that it is more like a labyrinth than a brick wall. They can both be overcome given the right roleplay to do so. But they pose different threats upon the mental mage. I wouldn't want to delve into the head of someone with multiple personalities (though my character would, so go figure) because once you get someone with melding the whole landscape could shift from under you. Mining 129 Share Posted September 22, 2014 What would happen if a mental mage were to connect to a mage connecting (or even connected) to the void. To use magic a mage has to clear their mind of everything, so would that function as a sort of mental barrier? Also, what would it be like for a mental mage connection to someone who is connected to the void themselves?
Elindor 666 Share Posted September 23, 2014 A mental mage would have free roaming on a mind that has been blanked through meditation. Only the most hidden sub-conscious barriers would remain in-place when a mind is attempting to connect with the void. The mental mage wouldn't have any additional power over them. Just easy access. As for what it would be like: all minds have some form of barrier, but the ones that have not trained to make a purposeful barrier essentially have a big open door to them. When someone is connecting to the void they put aside all conscious thought. For a mental mage to enter that, it is like entering a house with no walls. You can easily see where you want to go and there's practically nothing stopping you from going there. Funny this has never come up because it is a little bit of a game-changer in terms of mental magic in use for combat situations. Not that you can do very much combatantly, but the other mage makes themselves very vulnerable.
Mining 129 Share Posted September 23, 2014 Interesting. Does that mean a mental Mage could easily stop a Mage from casting by distracting their defenceless mind?
Elindor 666 Share Posted September 23, 2014 Just as much as you could normally distract a mage from casting their spell by, say, poking them in the cheek. But with a little bit more influence because you have a voice in their head. You couldn't just say "Distracts Lafthi" but you would have to just make an attempt by yelling or showing them their mother doing the dirty or something.
