Elaboration on the Ruskan Peoples
*A pamphlet is distributed throughout Oren; copies can drift to other nations.*

The Free Sovets of Flotsam has decided to deliberate upon the Ruskan peoples and to distinguish the various socioeconomic ethnicities and nationalities within the overarching Ruskan people.

  • A Ruskan is someone who’s region of origin is in the Oreni West; this includes what is now referred to as the regions of Kaedrin and Ruska, or the lands that were under the Kingdom of Ruska before the Imperium was forged. This mostly includes all people that come to mind when people think of those that shout “Da”, forged Oren’s peasant culture, and often congregate in large mobs to express disapproval against Fascism. Ruskan is a nationality and not a ethnicity. For example, the author of this bill, Wilfriche Buron, possesses the nationality of Ruskan, but was born by Hanseatic parents, and is thus of Hansetian or Northernor ethnicity.

  • A Raevir is someone born of Raevir parents and of the Raevir culture; a distinct series of bloodlines mixed with a particular culture and tradition stemmed from Aegan Raev. The concept of a Raevir is an ethnic one; one is born into the Raevir culture. Even if one converts to a Raevir way of life, he would not truly be Raevir lest he or she had long blood ties with a Raevir in the past. An example of someone who is Raevir but not necessarily Ruskan is our king, Heinrik I Carrion. While Heinrik is born of Raevir peoples and of their traditions, he does not reside in Ruska and his country of origin is not within Anthos, and thus he is not Ruskan but still Raevir.

  • A Kraltan is someone born or currently residing in the township of Kralta. This is a specification of nationality. A Kraltan does not have to be Raevir as they are many non-Raevir citizens of Kralta. In fact, Kralta was originally populated with many Hanseatics stemming from the Valden Band.

  • A “strelt” is the raevir term for a lowborn ruralite sworn to a lord whom is not a king. The plural for strelt is strelesy. Most strelts work in fields or mines as labourers, though some have skilled occupations. The majority of self-identified strelesy in Oren are concentrated in Kralta, as it is the only Raevir-centric town with a lord. However, the word strelesy is merely a raevir term; it can technically be applied to all lowborns whom are sworn to a lord in an oath, which means it can extend to peoples in Schattenburg or other townships. The people of Flotsam would not fall under the lexicon of strelt, as they swear no oath to any feudal lord outside of their king.

  • A Flotsamite or “Floater” is someone born or currently residing in the township of Flotsam. Most Flotsamites are born from Raevir colonists post-exodus and thus identify ethnically as Raevir. However, all are Ruskans, as all are under the territory known as Ruska.

  • A “sovet” is the raevir term for a free lowborn city-dweller. The majority of self-identified sovets are concentrated in the township of Flotsam; however, just as strelesy, it is term that could theoretically be applied to those whom live in Abresi or other cities.

OOC: Made to help distinguish the difference between all these different terms which sprang up as a result of RP. If it seems confusing, here’s an IRL example vs. an RP example.

IRL example:

Han is a Chinese man, born in New York. He resides in New York.

Han’s nationality is American
Han’s ethnicity is Chinese
Han would call himself a “New Yorker” as he was born and raised in the area.

RP examples:

Boris is a Raevir man who was born in Renatus. He resides in Abresi.

Boris’ nationality is NOT Ruskan; it is Renatian as the Ruskan territories are not his country of origin.
Boris’ ethnicity is Raevir.

Boris would call himself an Abresian; not a Kraltan or Flotsamite as he was born and raised in Abresi.
Boris would not really identify with the term strelt, as he was never part of the rural community which make up strelts. However, he may identify with the term sovet, since he is a Raevir lowborn city-dweller.

Sven is a Hanseatic human male born in Kralta. He resides in Kralta.

Sven’s nationality is Ruskan; not Renatian or Hansetian.
Sven’s ethnicity is Hanseatic.

Sven would call himself a Kraltan, because he was born and raised in the area.
Sven would identify with the term strelt, as all Kraltans are required to swear to their liege lord and Kralta is largely a rural town. He would not identify with the term sovet, since he is not an urban dweller.

Hopefully things that can clear things up both OOC and RP to avoid lumping together different groups (for example, the Kraltans/Strelesy are not involved in the current warfare between Flotsamites and Lucienists)

"All of you are strelts." says Niccolo, tossing the paper away.
