A Dark Truth

It was the day after Vorstag's cremation, emotions were mixed in Heibenhall. Many still morned for their fallen brother. Although, it was noted that one Dwarf in particular did not show at the event.

Bardel Irongut had been elusive for a few days now, still a few saw him scrambling around the tower he resided in. But the night before he was seen carrying some crates of ingredients and alembics around.

Such an odd Dwarf. The things he must have gotten up too.

That morning he re-entered Heibenhall. Some of the refugees were sat around the front of the fort, looking at the ashes of the fire the night before.

He stopped and spoke

"Brothers, Sisters. Why do you remain? This place can hardly fit the Irongut clan alone let alone the rest of the clans. Come home, back to Kal'Agnar. Emperor Velkan sends his regards. The whole Ironborn clan sends their regards. I come as a messenger. As my blood is theirs and your blood is mine. Lord Velkan wishes you home my kin, all cave Dwarves are welcome. Come home back to the capital. We can reside in the undercity in peace under the true Ironborn rulers. Why do we need to seperate? We Ironborn are the only clan who can rule the kingdom properly, truthfully without the corruption. Yes, I have waited. I have waited a long time for this to happen, for this day to come. Hidden my bloodline and prayed to Khorvad in secrecy. It finally arrived. The day when our race can ascend to greatness again. I have seen many a king stumble and fall under the weak rulership. Come back and make our Empire stronger. Together we can conquer.

We Ironborn do not wish to harm you. We simply wished to retake our rightful place on the throne and now we have you can return in peace. Please come home my kin."

Bardel, kin of the Ironborn stops speaking and awaits the replies of the Dwarves.

Dwain reads and is extreamly upset.

"Ironborn killed our fore father, Dwain the First. Any Irongut who sides with the basterds of the Ironborn is now not my blood brother. You have stained your honor Bardel. You have sided with those who are in league with undead, undead my father fought everyday in his life in Aegis. Undead that destroyed our Manor, undead that raised Dwain the First, undead that plagues our minds. Ironborn were removed for a reason and even though we are cave dwarves we are not low enough to side with evil.

I declare a blood grudge upon you scum. I shall not give up till your head rests at my feet. You shame me to hold that same blood as you."

Kardel is petrified, stricken with grief at his son's behaviour. The old, pale dwarf raises his voice in objection, looking as angered as he was when he started the Vaerhaven Rebellion. With his deep, ominous voice the Elder speaks up, his words ringing across Hiebenhall like a curse spoken with the utmost hate: ''I DISOWN YOU!''

A couple of dwarves gasp, as the pale one comes forth from the crowd, relying on his staff for support. He adresses his words directly at Bardel as if thrusting a knife to the boy's very soul ''He tells lies! He is a coward, full of sloth and lacking the manly ability to stick with his clan! He is a traitor! Yet another one of my sons to betray me and shame my name!''

Kardel then directly turns to Bardel, speaking so harshly in his face that it looks as if the dwarf would lunge at any second. ''You, treacherous little wretch! You SHAME me! You shame the already thrice-tarnished bloodline of Heron that I so hardly tried to keep on its feet! WE ARE NOT IRONBORN! You fool yourself! You are not related to them in ANY WAY!''

Kardel turns about to his other dwarves ''You all believe me, right?'' He says, with a hopeless smile on his face, stricken with grief so deep that his old, wrinkly, delicate hands shake. The old dwarf stumbles forth, losing his grip on his staff and collapsing onto his knees. Two younger lads help him onto his feet again, where he straightens his back and yells to the crowd ''WE ARE NOT IRONBORN! This lad. . .he is a disGRACE!''

Kardel then turned back to Bardel, pointing a finger to him as if he was damning him to the fieriest reaches of the nether. ''He is just like the rest of them! A disgusting, shameful beardling that wants to take over his father's glory! He has no appreciation of what I have done! HE HAS NONE OF IT! He is a hollow shell of my son. . .that out of cowardice and foolishness has fallen to a level so despicable that he now openly pledges his fealty to Khorvad! And now, he finally wants to eliminate ME from the equation so that he may finally tarnish my name and annihilate my bloodline!''

Kardel narrows his eyes, as he prepares to spit out the foulest of words at the youth, words so foul that they strike the mind like the venom of the deadliest adder.

''He is not my son. . .he is only. . .''

Kardel paused for a moment, before with a terrible rage in his eyes, he jettisoned the word forth with a tone so bemoaning and vile that even Setherien himself, if he were to hear it, would not be able to help cringing.

''. . .a Bastard!''

All of the dwarves around him let out a gasp; it was true, most dwarves were bastards of their fathers. . .but being called one and being regarded as one by their fathers themselves, was an offense that no other race understood.

''All of you bastards are the same! Born of foul blood, out of mad, animal-like lust! Forged from the sin of your fathers. . .as a punishment to your fathers' actions. You are touched by Khorvad himself with jealousy and envy so great that the only thing that can purge it is seeing and causing the downfall of your own sires! You, Bardel the Bastard, are a spineless MONSTER! An ABOMINATION! HOW DARE YOU ASHAME YOUR ELDERLY FATHER LIKE THIS?!''

''Hereon. . .I disown you! May you take up whatever name you wish, but know this; you are NO Irongut, you are NO Snowborn, you are NO son of Heron! You are a filthy *****-born rat whose soul belongs to KHORVAD! I DAMN YOU TO THE NETHER!''

Kardel then steps forth, and forcefully yanks the magnificent black blade out of the younger dwarfs hip. He then promptly points to the lad's beard, where a brooch of gold resides in the shape of a flame, symbolising his rank as a Master Alchemist. Today, Kardel Irongut had forsaken the last of his bloodline, thus ending his branch of Irongut forever, or until his shameful son would prove himself worthy once again.

Bardel nods sorrowfully, his father's words hitting him in the heart he had buried into his chest. He looks to Kardel, whom is slightly shorter due to a hunch from age. A flash crosses Bardel's eyes and he speaks.

"You 'ave the nerve... to brand me treacherous, father? You have the nerve to call me a monster and an abomination?!"

Bardel chuckles a dark chuckle

"Indeed, I am half the man you are... but I am half as twisted too. Maybe I am just another one of those Alchemical mistakes you made? It must be. Except this one you couldn't cast aside or throw away. You wish you could but I remained. A stain on your tainted soul. I have seen it for a long time. I knew this day would come. You always run from the truth father."

The Dwarf stops, standing tall and proud.

"I choose different! You are lucky! I will not follow in your footsteps or your shadow any longer!"

He moves away from the old Dwarf

"Pathetic man."

Turning to the rest he speaks, his voice echoes from the mountain as he points to Kal'Agnar.

"There is where we belong. The Ironborn are the true rulers! All who follow will be forgiven."

Bardel turns back to Kardel

"To those too weak to follow, let it be. LET IT BE A WAR OF FIRE AND ICE! See what your 'Fire' alchemist can do against the forces of the Ironborn and my superior Alchemy."

The Dwarf's eyes glowed brightly as he lowered his voice to talk to his father once more

"I appear to have outgrown you"

At that moment some of the Irongut beardlings had heard enough and let loose some arrows in Bardel's direction.

Bardel looks up and with a swift hand movement the arrows change course and sail wide by at least 10 meters.

Realising the danger Bardel doesn't stay. He throws a vial onto the ground which releases a black smog.

Dwarves frantically ran to catch the traitor but failed as when the smog cleared there was no trace.
