╔═════╗

Overview

╚═════╝

After the fall of Asulon, or Azliidan, the shallah had all but vanished from the knowledge of the descendants. Only a handful of families managed to keep the traditions alive. The shallah became scattered and hidden among the elven races, posing mostly as off looking mali’ame. However, with the amount of new land, whispers of the shallah returning reached the ears of those descended from the original clans. The Shallah slowly began coming back together.

Out in the valleys of Vailor, a small tribe of halfbreed elves make their camp. Training in various arts and living off the land, the Shallah keep to themselves, barely speaking to the outside world. Their tight knit clans sharing secrets brought in from the blood and history that has been passed down through the ages. These lithe and nimble clansmen keep themselves in peak physical form while only a handful use magic as it degrades the body.

╔══════╗

Appearance

╚══════╝

Shallah are generally between five feet to six feet. Their skin ranging from the dark umber to the sun kissed tawny. The undertones being generally warm. Their eyes come in various colors usually consisting of red, gold, brown, and rarely green or lavender. The ears of these elves are shorter than their cousins, coming to a point. Their physical attributes come from the two races they originated from, wood elf and dark elf. They are usually strong of build and stay well toned without looking overly buff. Their strength is surprising but not overpowering.

╔════╗

Culture

╚════╝

Family and honor based, the Shallah are a very close community. Believing in the respect of the spirits of the land, they do what they can to not disrupt it more than is needed. Ritual based, they hold ceremonies often from births to deaths, coming of age to marriages. Each member of the tribe is required to learn an instrument, usually wind or string. From there they each earn a place in the ceremonies. Each family of the tribe has their own set of rules, placed by the elder of the family. The head of family generally transferring to the eldest child, however this does not mean the other children will not be head of house.

╔════════╗

Tribal Hierarchy

╚════════╝

The tribe follow the rule of their chief. Usually chosen by the past chief or the priestesses. The highest power is of the chief, or Shal’weth, followed by his or her two officials, the Shal’kaka (Defense Master) and the Shal’prach (Domestic Master). Their advisor, the Shal’ava, is usually his or her lifemate. Though these four hold most power over the tribe, the Shal’kordaah (High Priestess) and the Shal’Rivaak (Sacred Priestess) hold the highest religious power.

╔════╗

Rituals

╚════╝

Several rituals and rites are done throughout the Shallah life. There is a total of six rituals each shallah undergoes, more if they have completed more in their lifetime. The presence of both the Shal’kordaah and the Shal’Rivaak must be present for many of the rituals.

Birthing of a Shallah - The Shal’kordaah acts as a midwife, trained from a young age to be ready for the birthing. The Shal’Rivaak prepares the temple for the welcoming of the new birth. Because births are rare for elves, it’s a village wide celebration for the shallah. The temple will be decorated in the village colors while the Shal’kordaah delivers the infant. The child is then cleaned and presented to the village where the name is bestowed upon the child by the spirits.

Coming of Age - When a young shallah reaches the age of eight years old, they are considered old enough for training. At this point, the able bodied child is taken to the temple to be given their training garments and their ears pierced. They are then presented before the chief and the clan. After their fortune is read by the Shal’Rivaak, they are then given to their trainer for the next twelve years.

Trial of Shallah - The trial of Shallah is given to young shallah who have reached the age of twenty. At this point, the shallah must undergo the trials under guidance of the Shal’Rivaak and the Shal’kordaah. The trials contain physical, mental, and spiritual tasks that take the young shallah past the realm of childhood. At the end of this, they are considered a full Shallah.

Transcribing of the All-Seer - At the age of twenty five, after a shallah has passed the Trails and gone through their first five years of dedicated service, the Shal’Weth will call a clan meeting to present the now worthy shallah to the clan. During this time, a great celebration is held and the Shal’Weth tattoos the Shallah’s back with the All-Seer. The clan will then celebrate with a grand feast and a combat game. This ceremony is also held when a Shallah earns other tattoos for greater deeds.

Transcendence of Mali - Upon reaching full maturity age, a Shallah is given their own title and land. The age of fifty begins the growth from young to old with the shallah. At this point a large celebration is held and the Shallah is honored for their service and age. The Shal’Rivaak and the Shal’Kordaah bless the Shallah in a ritual by fire. After which the Shal’Weth gives their blessing for the shallah to court any of their age or older.

Marriage - Marriage is a celebration of a union between two Shallah. The male generally will speak to the Shal’Rivaak and Shal’Kordaah about the wedding. The two will then make preparations. During the ceremony, the entire village is given a day off to celebrate the union. The bride and groom then are presented to the Shal’Weth who reads the rights of union. The Shal’ava or the Shal’Prach can be used in the stead if the Shal’Weth is unavailable. After the rights of union are given, the Shal’Rivaak reads the fortunes of the union while the bride and groom are sprinkled with spiritual water. The congregation then heads to the sea where bride and groom are then bathed by the Shal’Kordaah and the symbol of their unity finalized with the tying of a ceremonial scarf.

Death - The death of a shallah is a very melancholy event. A shallah’s death affects not just their family, but the whole village. The body is tended to by the Shal’Kordaah, treated with herbs and medicine to make the body look like it is sleeping. Shallah men would then bring the body out to the temple grounds for the village to mourn. The Shal’Weth would speak of the fallen and give a small community prayer. The Shal’rivaak would then cover the body in a special wrap before it is taken to the tombs for burial. There the family, or closest friends if no family lives, buries the deceased and offers their words to the spirits of the fallen.

╔════╗

Names

╚════╝

The Shallah names can be very difficult to understand depending on which family they came from. Some have taken the stricter names from Hiil'Sahviil’s line, while others took a different route, following Ni’Tessine’s line. Both are correct, however those from the Hiil’Sahviil’s line tend to look down upon those who do not follow this tradition.

The decendants of Hiil’Sahviil would use words from the Shallah language to create their names. Either in a short two word phrase or a longer phrase. Hiil’Sahviil made it a point that the Shallah should never forget where they came from and often looked down upon her cousins that refused to take the “proper” name path.

Ni’Tessine’s line was much less strict. She took the words of common, shallah, and elvish to make the names for her family, believing that the Shallah should not forget their kin, despite not being of the same blood. Many adopt her path of names and often feel the coldness of the Hiil’Sahviils.

╔════╗

Religion

╚════╝

Shallah believe in the spirits of their fallen. Much like the Mali’ker do, they believe strongly in their ancestors, however they believe they walk among them. The wisps that seem to float around their grounds are believed to be the fallen Shallah. This stems from them staying near the graveyard and the tombs mostly. While none have been able to communicate with them other than the Shal’Rivaak, they hold the wisps in high regard. All ceremonies are held around the thanks of the spirits. The Shal’Rivaak is held in the highest regard religion wise as they can “speak” to these wisps and speak for them.

Shallah History

╚════════╝

Azliidan, 1366. The first Shallah had began to appear. At first they were small in numbers, collecting together out of fear of persecution. They created their first village and began to grow as a small tribe. It was then the first Shal’Kordaah and Shal’Rivaak appeared. Ni’Tessine and Hiil’Saviil. Ni’Tessine often spoke of the spirits and tried to bring her people together while Hiil’Saviil began creating their rituals.

Azliidan, 1372. The Shallah were attacked by a group of bandits. Few were lost, however the Shal’Rivaak lost her eyesight. The village mourned for Ni’Tessine’s eyes but she soon found herself able to do so much more with less. Hiil’Saviil took on a higher role and began to preach more about the strength of their culture. The first Shal’Weth was named.

Azliidan, 1393. The Shallah began thriving in numbers. Their culture hidden from the other descendants, only a few knew of the Shallah. Traditions between the Shal’Rivaak and the Shal’Kordaah began, slowly splitting the clan in half with their decisions.

Azliidan, 1397. Ni’Tessine was found murdered in the temple. The village mourned the loss and proceeded to close itself further from all outsiders. The Shal’Kordaah became the only beacon of home. A second Shal’Rivaak was announced.

Azliidan, 1401. Tensions in the Shallah grew as the world around them grew darker. The body of several children were found, Hiil’Saviil began the hidden scrolls of the Shallah, giving half to Ni’Tessine’s husband.

Azliidan, 1413. The Shallah disperse and go into hiding. Hiil’Saviil is found mutilated in the graveyard. Her work hidden with her own family and Ni’Tessine’s. The Shallah were deemed lost.

Vailor, 1529. The Shallah have been reported wandering towards an unknown location. They seem to be growing in numbers as a new Shal’Weth is found, leading the descended lines towards their new land.

╔═════╗

Language

╚═════╝

The Shallah language has been mostly lost since their fleeing of Aziildan. What few words are known are used as names or part of speech mixed with common and elven. Many scholars have tried to reconstruct the language, but only some words have been recovered. While some Shallah are strict with the usage of the words, others mix them in with speech, often confusing outsiders with their mixture.
