Marik was born into the humble home of a Haensi farmer. From an early age, he toiled in the fields and forests surrounding the northern city of Siegrad. His mother Alina, a weaver, taught him the names of the great highlander kings of old, Joren, Baruch, Rovyk, and many others. Marik’s childhood was a happy one, the young lord Barbanov did not set a high quota for his farmers, and his family never had to worry about getting food on the table. This changed when his mother withered away after a particularly harsh winter. The loss took it’s toll on his father Torvan, who passed away in the next. Orphaned, Marik looked to the Duchy’s levy force, the Brotherhood of the Golden Crow for a new sense of purpose. Enlisting alongside another hearty lad by the name of Oskar, Marik set down his plough and picked up a sword, fighting in the many Orenian conquests of his time.

When Siegrad was consumed by a colossal dark earthen-worm, taking the lord Barbanov with it, Marik stayed true to his cause, and continued to serve alongside his Brothers in their new home in Vailor. His knowledge of tilling the land came in handy for the Brotherhood as they tamed the wild mountains and barren hinterlands of Carnatia, and he built up a great stock of grain to last the soldiers a lifetime. When the Duke’s War broke out between the Duchies of Adria and Savoy, Marik rode with his brothers to Duke Hugo’s aid, pitching a war camp outside the city of Brelus. Marik grew accustomed to the harsh rhythm of war, each day was another skirmish with de Sola skirmishers, or Amyas footmen. Through sheer luck Marik surivived the catastrophic battle of the Forest and the Siege of Barrowyk. After the disbandment of the Brotherhood, Marik sought purpose in the Lotharingian crusade, fighting in the company of Holy Ser Marius Baruch as they took a slew of tarchar forts in the name of their Creator. Marik settled down in the small town that sprung up by the riverside, coined “Luciensport.” And there he stayed for many years, growing old and tan in port city.
