Hunting in the Sands

Drokon peered at the massive beasts from his position behind a thin bush, parched and browning from the harsh climate surrounding the capital of Gundz’Koth. The young Ugluk had never seen such an awe-inspiring beast in his brief time in the realm of mortals and his hunts had usually been limited to beasts of a much smaller stature, however this beast presented a rare opportunity to feed his clan for several months and a challenge unlike any other the warrior had ever faced before.

To his left, crouching behind an adjacent bush, creeped the freshblood Orc Kruyeel. A clanless Orc, Drokon had come to admire the blue Orc for his tenacity and fearlessness in combat which made him an excellent hunting companion. The Ugluk clicked his tongue, raising his thick spear above his head, pointing at one of the beasts who appeared to be drinking from the oasis, another larger beast appeared to be wandering about behind it in a sort of patrolling nature, as though it were protecting the other from danger. Unfortunately, it would not succeed in its job that afternoon as Drokon heaved the spear at the smaller beast’s side, watching as the spear drove into its side as the beast reared back, shaking the ground with each stomp of its powerful legs.

Just as Drokon’s spear drove into the powerful beast, Kruyeel charged the beast, driving his spear into the beast’s throat with a heavy two-handed thrust. What the blue Orc did not expect though was for the beast to be quick enough to respond and when the beast turned its heavy trunk toward the Orc, Kruyeel was not prepared to face the sheer amount of force that the blow would deliver, sending him into the sand on his back.

Drokon, shocked by the amount of strength displayed by the beast, turned just in time to notice the second beast stampeding in his direction. His eyes widen as he took two deep breaths, drawing a second spear from his back and shutting his eyes. One thing that most Orcs had come to learn either through direct confrontation or stories was that Drokon was one of the most capable warriors in the Uzg, and his tactics were that of an ancient sort based heavily upon meditation and calculated movements. Regardless of his opponent, beast or Orc, his tactics did not change and so Drokon meditated, even if it was briefly. As the beast stampeded toward the Ugluk, his breathing did not change and his meditation did not break, instead he stood steadfast in the sand before the monster. Just as the beast reached Drokon, his eyes snapped open to attention and he raises his spear, sliding beneath the legs of the beast and ripping open part of his underbelly. Thick blood poured from the beast’s stomach, drenching Drokon in the thick red goop.

Meanwhile Kruyeel engaged the second beast in a sort of titanic struggle. The beast would not relent, swinging her massive trunk around at the blue Orc. Taking heavy steps toward the Orc, Kruyeel appeared to find himself relaxed and ready to engage the beast. In a flurry of quick moves, the blue Orc found himself ducking and avoiding the heavy swings of the beast and against the side of the beast, delivering several quick blows to the beast’s legs. After taking an untold number of strikes to her legs and throat, the mighty beast collapsed on her back legs, letting out a small grumble as it laid down into the sand, slowly bleeding out.

Just as Kruyeel finished off his engagement with the female beast, Drokon continued to wrestle with the male. Standing beneath the beast, a sort of claustrophobic feeling washed over the Ugluk which caused him to draw his battle axe, unleashing a flurry of rapid strikes at the beast’s legs and underbelly, blood pouring all over the young Orc. With these furious strikes made upon its entire lower body, the beast simply could not hold up and collapsed, nearly crushing Drokon had he not nimbly avoided this fate by rolling from beneath him.

Drenched in blood and guts of the beasts they had just slaughtered, the two Orcs embraced one another in congratulations and then turned back toward the two beasts. Without much word between the two, the Orcs went over to their respective kills and silently thanked Krug and the spirits for the blessings and allowing them to emerge victorious and feed their kin for the next several moons. After their victory the two stripped the carcasses for their meat and returned to their city, still covered in blood from their encounter, and celebrated with dozens of other Orcs over the fire, enjoying the excellent elephant meat.

Mok'han does not remember seeing any Ugluks killing Raguk mounts, as he roasts a Myrzym steak over the fire.
