His Grace, Duke Arthur Roswell stood upon the watchtower overlooking the County of Pompourelia. Beside him stood his two closest advisors: Thobithos Fanrenson and William Karduin. Their gaze beamed forward toward the land as the southern plains of Oren sprawled out before them. Arthur glanced over to the advisors as they continued their onlook. A solemn whisper began to emit from his lips, “For long I have served these lands. I have ensured the safety of these people as Regent of Istria… and now I am the Duke. These men deserve the best quality of life that any Duke can provide them. I will not diverge from this goal. I will succeed or die trying. By the grace of GOD, bring greatness upon these lands and preserve the reign of his Imperial Majesty. I dare not to fail you, my LORD.” His gaze returned to the lands before him. More words slipped from his tongue, “I want you to organize the central Istrian levy.” The two nodded before slowly bowing their heads, “It will be done, your Grace.” Arthur nodded once, “Then it is done. May the Istrian Legion begin and the future of Istria unfold…”

 

Ranking Structure:  

 

-Senior Officers-

 

Commandant ⁞‡⁞

The  Commandant serves as the head of the Duchy's forces in all aspects. His/her duties fall under watching over the political scope of the Legion and is obligated to lead his men directly into combat. This position may only be assumed by a truly brilliant strategist.  The Commandant, shortened often as Cmdt in letters.  

 

Commander Paramount ‡ ῼ ‡

In the absence of the Commandant, the Commander Paramount commands any necessary body within the order that is unsupervised. This could vary from the Commandant leading the cavalry whilst the Commander Paramount foresees the infantrymen, to any other possible situation. This title can be seen as the right hand of the Commandant in many respects.

 

Primus •ῼ•

Amongst all the Istrian officers this man has been chosen as the senior officer and there is only one within the entire legion.  He would have been long dead did he not pack the sheer virtue and will to power necessary to achieve this rank.  He wields valour as his incense and dies with honour and respect.

 

-Middle Officers-

 

Decurion ǂ ǂ

A senior officer rank amongst the Istrians, one that traditionally commands their fellow infantrymen in combat and serves to train them when outside the battlefield.  Woe to those who fail to recognize the Decurion’s authority.  The officer has proven himself beyond an able-bodied tactical leader, maybe semi-mythical to the men under him; immortal as he has never fallen from his horse in battle, he grows closer to the legends.  He is rightly confident in his abilities due to his lengthy record of victories.

 

Ensign ǂ

Now a veteran Istrian militant, this warrior, this son of Oren has been granted new authority over an arsenal of rankers by being appointed a junior officer.  His superiors’ faith in him is now concrete, and his name is a celebrated one throughout the region.

Aquilifer Sergeant  ʘ

He’s unlike the rest now simply that he has chosen to take a position with little further opportunity for advancement - his virtue, by God, is that of the finest.  That grizzly and hawkish Istrian man has been promoted to the rank of Aquilifer Sergeant.  The Aquilifer is an Istrian flagbearer, and his post is invaluable because the standard is used as a rallying point in combat.  A heavily defended man in battle.

 

Sergeant-at-Arms •••

Grizzly and hawkish.  The two greatest words to describe he who has risen to become known as Sergeant.  Through fire and blood and steel this man has earned his place as one of the first leaders the heavy infantry follow.

Man-at-Arms ••

Once, he was a footman.  Now he is a combat veteran and a heavy infantryman armed with the finest steel Istria can produce.  But he’s also young and foolish, qualities that hone themselves with age.  But nothing will change his place as the sword and shield of the coming Empire, and a bringer of destruction to the profligates and barbarian hordes of the outer world.

He’s taken the first step thus far, proven he’s a man and more importantly an Orenian man by showing his allegiance to Istria openly.
 

Conscript

The first rank of the legion. He has just joined the ranks, and is working towards promotion into the higher ranks, where the soldiers are now openly associated as Istrion men.

 

Structure of the Legion:

The Istrian legion is structured into squads. These squads will consist of an Ensign, a Sergeant-at-Arms, and two Men-at-Arms. Above the Ensign is a Decurion. The Decurion is responsible for two squads. He will bring both squads together for training exercises, and can even be used as a flanking force if it is required. Then comes the Primus. There is only one man who takes the rank of Primus. He will oversee and command the Decurions. Above that is the Commander Paramount. His purpose it to keep the Primus in check, and lead in the absence of the Commandant. In battle he may lead the second wing of the Istrian Legion. The Footmen will not be immediately inducted into squadrons. They must firstly prove their valour to reach the rank of Man-at-Arms.

 

The Tenants:

1. No member shall steal from their brothers in arms.

2. No member shall betray the force, this includes feeding information to the enemy, deserting and not attending guard duty.

3. No member shall harm a brother in arms, nor the innocent, or defenceless.

4. No member shall be disloyal to the force’s cause

5. Every member is subject to the Duke’s authority. Disobedience to the Duke, and superiors will lead to heavy punishment.
