Three banners flapped in the wind, their cloth offering little protection from the winds to the company of riders. A black crow and a black iron mace on a field of blood, a gilded crow on a black sky, a white sea snake coiled in a blue ocean. Atop their horses perched the Grandmaster and his officers, the Hetman and his stranniks, the Vanirs and their exiled commanders. The coalition sat upon these men’s shoulders, national pride sat upon their backs and the vengeance for slights long ago drawn spurred at their boots.

Beneath their steeds’ hooves and the summit of Vasili’s Hill was a sea. Not of bodies, no, nor of water. The sea was one of flame, of campfires and hearths, of torches and forges. The engine of war that had been built in the crisp northern air now moved as crisply as a sea snake through the waves.

The soldiers of the north mulled together amongst the maze of flame. Their blades shining as if the sun perched above them as a great crow in a tree. Yet, only the moon offered them natural light. Men had begun work on trebuchets, catapults and battering rams. Ladders stacked atop each other offered the men their company and their wooden stories.

The blinding sea of flame, of vengeance, licked upon the eyes of the Courlanders. Their army sat with gloom in their keep, holed up and awaiting battle. Their fate would be decided by their own hands, not by God’s intervention. Their fate would be decided by their own walls, not by luck. Their fate would be decided in their conscious, their thoughts of Genocide only serving to drive their resolve.

“On the morn, we begin the assault.”

Three banners flapped in the wind, their cloth offering a means of Judgement to the fearful aristocrats in their fortified keep.
