Lyemar breathed a sigh of relief as Ara Aureon left the tavern of Linandria. The Sparrow Druid had agreed to take him on as a student and teach him how the way of the Druid. The first step to becoming a druid completed.

A small grin graced his lips as he stood, wandering over to the barkeep and ordering; a mug of wine, a piece of parchment, and quill & ink.

With the tools in hand, he promptly left the tavern, promising to return the items to the barkeep to answer her complaints. The upper branches of a tree are where he next set himself down, a spot he knew well as he had been without a home and slept there. With quill in hand and the parchment pressed against his leg, he began to write his first task.

The Balance

The Balance of Nature, the very thing that brings order to our world. For centuries, the balance has existed and thus life is allowed to continue. With careful care, the Aspects has seen to the balance of nature. The absolute easiest way to imagine the balance would be to imagine a scale, with the Aspect’s roles and influence on either side weighing down. They keep each other in check, for if the balance was to tilt too far in either direction, chaos would ensue. They are counters, and both are necessary for life.
Cerridwen, the Green Lady, the Mother; she is what all beings owe their lives to. She is the Aspect of life, growth, fertility, and nurturement. She was with us in the beginning of time. She saw the birth of all the life in this world and is credited with the existence of it to this day. With her nurturing touch, she shaped the land and blessed it with life. From her, we have vast forests and plains filled with a variety of plant life. Small critters and large creatures alike call her their mother and thank her for the allowance of them to live in her dominion. She has also seen to our growth as a people. Under her care, we have risen from our nomadic ways where we traveled the floors of her forests in tribes called Seeds, to a more civilized way of life. We give our thanks to Cerridwen for the life she has given us and sacrifice to her so we may receive her blessings for the life to come. Without her, there would be no life and thus the balance of nature thrown off.
Cernunnos, the Horned Man, the Father; he is the counterpart to Cerridwen. He is the Aspect of the hunt, of predators, and of death. Where she may grant life, the Horned Man claims it in death. Like the Mother, the Father was with us in the beginning of time. He has stood by her side and welcomes all her beings with an open embrace to join him in his hunt. Death is not to be feared, nor is the Father. His intent is not born of evil, but of maintaining the balance. All life must come to an end someday, and so it is the duty of the Father to tend to death. It is said that Cernunnos, the Huntsman, granted our first Elven King Malin the ability to perfect the art of archery. A blessing that has been bestowed upon the ‘Ame people ever since so that through the death of the Mother’s beings, we may survive. In times of war, we offer our prayers and sacrifice so that we may protect the balance of nature from those that wish to harm it. In times of peace, we prayer to the Father so he may bless our bows and guide our arrows true to grant the Mother’s beings a quick death so we may feast and live another day. Without him, life would overrun the world and the world thrown into chaos as life lives on forever.
The balance is everywhere and may be best observed in the clearing of a forest. It is here that the Aspects have a strong influence. The Mother has seen to granting the area life. The forests surrounding the clearing provide shelter for the various animals that live in the area. The plant life in the clearing the perfect source of food for these beings. Her influence is strong and with her blessing, life flourishes. Under her care, rabbits have multiplied and live contently. But as their numbers increase, harm begins to come to the balance of nature. They greedily feast on the plants the Green Lady has carefully seen to growing and no new life has the chance to take root. And so, the Father may step in. He has blessed the wolves of the area with sharp teeth and keen eyes. They prowl, on the hunt for days without food. And so, the Father sets them loose on the rabbits that inhabit the clearing. They feast and the number of rabbits is decreased. While the slaughter of the rabbits may seem cruel, balance is restored. The Father has deemed that they were at the end of their life and completed the cycle. The Mother may once again bless the area and plant life return. Thus restoring the balance. The Mother grants life, and the Father takes it. The cycle of life is completed and a new cycle may begin for another.
The balance will never be perfect. For it will always tilt in one direction slightly, either towards the Mother or the Father. It is their roles as each other’s counterparts to ensure the balance does not tilt too far in either direction. Through the Aspect’s blessings, they themselves and those they have blessed with their gifts called Druids, see to maintaining this balance. For without the balance, we would cease to exist.

At last, it was complete! After many hours, and many drafts, he was satisfied with the result.

"The moment of truth," He murmured as he rose from his sitting position and hopped down onto the streets of Linandria, setting off to find his teacher.

Thoughtfully tapping on her lower lip as she scanned the thesis, the Sparrow Druid’s heart soared with pride at her student's job well done.

Melgarth Taliiyh Torena would stumble out of the tavern inbetween sobs and bliss, evidently piss-drunk and still in mourning. He would take note of the materials and allow himself a brief "Hic" and a chuckle, saying "Fhat afern wansh tho be a druid ...hah, fern... HIC ... We needsh more druidsh... HIC ... More planty threehuggersh! Wood Elfsh luf fhe threehuggersh!... HIC!" He would then collapse onto the grass and look up into the sky, contemplating life as a whole and the current state of events, ocassionally being tripped over by the Wood Elvish passerbys.
