His father’s face seemed to float before him in the darkness. His hair was full of sunlight, but there was mockery in his smile. “You stiff-necked fool, too proud to listen. Can you eat pride, Sigismund?” he whispered. For good or ill, he had thrown the dice. Sigismund had played and lost, and he paid the price of his folly with his life’s blood. When he thought of his family, he would have wept gladly, but the tears would not come. Even now, he was a Sparrow of House Chivay, and his grief and rage welled deep within him.

They came for Sigismund on the third day.

The Vice-Chancellor Sigismund of Couentre stood alongside His Holiness Adrian I as the marriage was officiated, a smile distinct among his unpolished features. He observed those around him with great joy, reminiscing in the immense success of the newly appointed clergymen. As the bells of the Cathedral tolled around them, signaling the completion of the ceremony, the men of the Empire entered with Philip Frederick at their head. With their swords drawn, they demanded the Vice-Chancellor.

In the chaos, the Pontiff escaped yet Sigismund was not so fortunate. With a simple statement, Philip Frederick ordered his soldiers to seize him. Dragged across the city and into the Imperial Palace, Sigismund found himself surrounded and facing the Emperor. In the simple red robes of a cardinal, he stood tall with neither weapon or soldier of his own for protection. The purple cloaked soldiers flung Sigismund to the ground, with his head and chest bent over.

Philip Frederick raised his morningstar, offering the man his last words.

Sigismund raised his head, “I die the Empire's faithful servant, but God's first."

He closed his eyes and prayed to the almighty Creator.

Alistair sets his hand upon his heart, grief welling up inside him. "May he rest at ease and conquer whatever demons yet remain with him in spirit. We shall sanctify Oren in his name." His hand lowers, resting along the edge of the broadsword at his side. "Eternity comes at last, and soon the discord that has been sown by the Imperials shall end in peace. Rest well, child of the church, your sacrifice is not in vain."

Deacon Lancaster mourns the loss of his mentor, and teacher.

"You were the greatest Vice Chancellor of my time, It is with great sorrow to say that you may no longer gulp anymore air, But t'is with great redemption to say that you're flying high, in the Seven Skies, with GOD, Our lord and saviour. T'is with grave radiancy that I say that I threw you over my shoulder, off of the palace floors, and delivered you to the tomb, where I then lay you in the vault, to sleep in eternity with the rest of the pontiffs', and cardinals. You went out in the way of murder, one of the most negligent ways to be put to rest." As he finished his condolences, he'd mumble a prayer, and trace the Lorraine Cross about his chest.

The old Jacques d'Amaury hears tell of the horrid news from a courier. In his grief, he turns to his son to summarize his feelings:

"I worship GOD, and he is subject to no mortal man. Our forefathers would wage crusades against men of this gall, yet now they lead our most 'Holy' Orenian Empire. Reserving all pride for nationalism makes slaves of us all, Odus. Our faith ought not be subject to Imperial review."

"This is the kind of thought that lets Iblees and sin take us. If the church is under threat from the Empire, then Iblees can spread into our minds unrestrained"
