Those Who Remain...

The scent of blood crawled up the nostrils of those who remained. Bodies piled up, and a confrontation that began between those donning black and white, against a variety of banners and colors, now all donned a harrowing vermillion. The moans of those who were expiring haunted the halls of the once immaculate palace of Johannesburg.

The mind of the young and inadequately green noble, Count Samuel de Chevreaux, of House Gray raced as the men of Savoy drew their weapons from their scabbard, and the Holy Morningstar made it’s way unto the hands of his imperial liege. The youth tried to scatter prayers from his father’s bedside devotions. He held a sword that he had nearly never taken out of its sheath in his wrinkless, soft hands with a tight grip. The room had fallen silent, and grunts and deep breathing had drowned the room. Then they charged...

Samuel stayed on the ledges of the throne room, looking on as the butchery ensued. The loud noises of metal against metal were like choirs to those outside the palace; a melody of unrest to those who know piled up against the doors, trying to help, or catch a glimpse at the events that had befallen the imperial residence. Samuel jumped into the fray.

An arrow ended it. All became a void and the young lord hit the ground with a sickening thud. Blood soon pooled over the head of the dying Count, who gasped for breath like a newborn. One of his knights quickly ran up to him, kneeling by him and placing a shield in front of him, with a minor shred of hope for the health of Samuel.  As soon as he noticed the young lord had expired, the soldier moved on to defend John d’Amaury. Samuel Gray was gone.
