Tenets of a former Prince

A parchment sits pinned to a notice board in the many squares and the barracks of the Dominion, easy to be read by those that stopped by Caras Eldar.

Threat of a devastating display of the sword is needed for the age of prosperity to be protected in the Realm of the Elves, given the presence of evildoers on all borders. The manner in which warfare is carried out however, must remain dignified, representing the children of Malin in an honourable light. Nevertheless, it must be unrestrained in capacity and even brutal in return to brutal enemies.

It is not primarily others who ought to be addressed by this, but myself. Though others may take heed from these tenets and emulate them, these are primarily for my own use - to guide and temper my wartime passions, and to focus them to the objective. I do not wish to be seen as a rank hypocrite so I will be clear: I am no paragon of these virtues - but they are what my reasonable side believes to be the key to maintaining dignity in the most extreme times.

In combat, practice discipline in action and voice. In combat, it is easy to succumb to a barbarian instinct and voice insults to the enemy, degenerating into a foul cacophony unworthy of the children of Malin. But you must not become beasts like our enemies often appear to be. It is dignified instead to listen to the jeers and japes of the foe and marvel upon their unrefined and vulgar disposition, replying only with the blade and the arrow when the time is right. An insult means very little coming from the vanquished.

In victory, maintain a magnanimous disposition. You witness it without end. Upon the coming of a small victory against the Dominion, the enemy fuels their own fragile egos by professing their superiority and their apparently glorious victory. It is key that you do not emulate and contract the pettiness of your enemy, not least because if a declaration of victory was penned each time, the realm would run out of ink. After all, those who feel the need to scream of a single victory clearly do not taste victory very much. When the enemy has been scoured from the lands, celebrate and know the feeling with your comrades rather than emptily shoving this onto others.

Never copy to the evil of a chikr. You as a child of Malin know the value and sacredness of the young, so no children of any race, be that human, dwed, orc or especially fellow Elves, shall be killed or held hostage under any circumstances. Not even in vengeance for a child of my own being killed shall you revert to such a barbarous act, which is an offence to both the aspects and Malin.

Temper your pride and refrain from foolish excursions. The carrot is often held temptingly in front of an Elven warrior’s face, so that his discipline will break and he will abandon his comrades to go to the fight. Perhaps the enemy has insulted you or your family, but he must never fall to this urge. The feigned retreat is a powerful maneuver against an untrained mass, but will accomplish nothing if the bait of pride’s restoration is not taken.

Carven relinquishes gate duty to another mali’ame, moving off to read the profound parchment. “Truly sensible. Why, even, must we feel the need to cheer on our victories when they are far too common? Perhaps a true enemy awaits us, and then the need to celebrate such may arise, but now we hold our chins high in respect.” The elf would return to penning his thesis on the teachings of Malin, a new thought arising in his cranium.

Edred Maeyr’onn would hear of the parchment from fellow mali’aheral, those that are with Haelun’or but lie at the gate with their silver tongues. The elf would say in the privacy of his quarters, only knowing of the thing from a secondhand source,“Mm. We celebrate victory because it encourages morale for our citizens, you befouling mutts. What is a nation without it’s morale? What is a nation that does not celebrate their many victories and raise a glass of wine or a mug of ale to such? Yes, the Dominion remains strong and fierce. But even lion’s die to the hunter, for even lions are not the top of the food chain.”

"A shame he doesn't practice his own tenets." A sharply dressed aheral remarks, reading a copy that was delivered to him by bird.
