A Hunter's Guide, By Derrick Bell

Recommended Posts

"With the recent Huntsmaster moving into the Cloud Temple, I have taken up cataloging creatures he has tasked would-be hunters and slayers to kill. This way they might be better prepared when traveling to test their skills against these creatures, or perhaps seek out their parts…"  - Derrick Bell

One would find this ever-growing journal of beasts in the Monk Library, occasionally the old copy will disappear, replaced by a new copy with new monsters. ((To be updated as new monsters are hunted!))

The Bogbeast

Located in the Swaymoors
Danger Level: Medium Low
Notable Parts: Bogbeast Mandible (Uncommon)

"Bogbeasts are odd creatures, shambling mounds of swamp and rotting flesh that makes me wonder if they are undead or some other amalgamation of something else entirely. They emit a low groaning sound and seem to roam in small packs, at least four, sometimes six. Rarely have I caught a lone traveling Bogbeast, so perhaps they are a pack animal.

Further evidence for this is suggested in the poisonous gas they release after death. It smells like a mixture of swamp gas and something you’d find on a farm
. Whether this gas is flammable or not, I’d rather not find out. Inhaling the gas will induce heavy coughing, nausea, a wracking pain of the nerves, and may induce vomiting. All of these I have...experienced firsthand. So I recommend either slaying these beasts from afar with magic, bolts, arrows, or a spear. Swords and axes are not recommended unless you are fleet of foot. The gas does not seem to spread like normal gases, something I intend to research later but I digress.

The
Bogbeasts are not terribly dangerous creatures save for their number and the gas they emit upon death. This gas does not harm the other Bogbeasts and suggests they are either immune to their own gas, cannot breathe, or are immune to poisons entirely. I’ll need an alchemist to fashion me some sort of deadly gas bomb to test this later.

As far as materials go, the only thing I’ve been able to recover from their corpses that seems remotely useful is the jawbone of the Bogbeast. It is thick and slightly heavy, as far as jawbones go. This may suggest the creature would use its mouth for hunting or eating but it has only attacked with its claws
and makeshift weapons it has picked off more unfortunate folk. Perhaps there is some intelligence to them? It is hard to say as of now and more hunting will have to be done."

The Bilespitter

Located in Coral Peaks
Danger Level: Medium
Notable Parts: Bilespitter Eyestalks (Common)

"Like the giant spider commonly found in plains, caves, unattended attics, and more, the Bilespitter is a highly mobile creature that inhabits the cozier and drier corners of the Coral Peaks. They are incredibly hostile and possess the stamina to maintain chase for quite some time, indicating they are more about outlasting their prey than outdoing it. They seem to be pack creatures like some spiders, but only for the purpose of ensuring a meal.

As their name suggests, these spiders spit their webbing, or ‘bile’ as it what gives the name at their foes. The webbing is, in-fact, laced with a poisonous liquid that upon making contact with your skin burns the afflicted areas. The resulting pain and immobilization can cause great stress in an individual (like myself…) and the struggling only makes it harder to get out. Luck and quickness can allow one to escape the webbing relatively quickly to evade the creature’s bite, which is also poisonous and powerful. One should take care not to let these outnumber you too quickly or you will be overwhelmed.

Like most beasts with poison, ranged equipment is favored at taking these creatures down. A skilled archer can make easy targets of these spiders. When not in pursuit of prey, they are relatively docile and do not move much. They prefer to stick to their territory until a meal comes, which they will relentlessly pursue. Melee can be used, but it is advised if you are good at keeping to a beast’s flanks to avoid its bite.

Finally, for the materials...the eyes of the creature are too small to collect but the eyestalks seem to hold some value. Of what I am unsure of yet. Most likely they can be fermented like normal spider eyes for use in alchemy and other medicine. Further examination of the eyestalks is needed. Until then, I’ll keep them in a jar for the day I find someone who is more educated than eye in the study of creature anatomy."
