ONCE TRIUMPHANT NOW BROKEN

The Romstun doggers above the burning ruins of White Peak

 

A host of soldiers stood atop the hills near the Curonic fortress. They had vanquished with ease the bandits who had dared lay claim to the nearby fortress at the crossroads, watching the marauders flee instead of face the superior Renatian legions. White Peak had similarly fallen, easily taken when naysayers from all over Atlas had denied the ability of the legions of men to restore their pride and put down the deluded rebels.

 

Now their forces had moved on, fresh to a new target. The city of Curon, once a bastion of independent strength and now a hollow shell, lay before the company. The grizzled captain, a nameless veteran who had served in dozens of conflicts wiped the sweat from his brow and spat a glob of phlegm into the nearby dirt in disgust. With a short grunt - a wordless exclamation that his comrades understood intuitively - he turned and began to march off with the company.

 

Behind him the siege engines that had destroyed countless cities rumbled past on the paltry road, digging deep gashes into the muddy path. The earth itself seemed to quake and bleed when faced by the machines of war; a suitable accompaniment to the suffering that would soon be endured by those who challenged the might of arms of Renatus-Marna.
