Amongst a Wilted Garden

A menacing breeze rolled through Sutica on the eve I found them. Never had I felt so unwelcome in the gleaming white city. Iron was in the air, a fresh kill. Like a buck shot in the forests it called out to me; a familiar scent amongst the musky odors of the gardens and stone. My legs were already moving before Kyoores or myself could even process it. My instincts were ablaze as I found myself rushing towards their home.

It was supposed to be a simple visit. See how they were doing settling in with the twins as they grew from tiny babes I held in my arms to meeting their heads below my waist. But fate is cruel. Fate is twisted. Fate will lead you down one path only to yank the carpet out from under you to send you spinning and reveal unto you that which only lay in your worst nightmares.

Bits of bone and animal fur lined the scene as the children’s limbs lay on the floor, butchered, what remained was sprawled on the floor like a butcher’s shelf and I could feel my knees give as I looked around. Their home was in shambles. Everything they had built, everything they had shared, ruined. But where were they...the home reeked of sweat and blood as I searched.

A menacing blade piercing through a heart, her body lay strewn over Harevan’s mulched remains as they smoldered silently. I don’t remember what happened after I dropped to my knees. What I do is waking to tears staining my eyes and the wood beneath me. Such is fate, to be cruel and unkind. Such is fate, to steer me towards my duty with such fury. Those responsible will pay, for this, my soul is cinder.

“Dear [Your Name Here],

It is with a heavy heart that I pen this letter, never would I think in my lifetime would I outlive a dear friend whom I considered a sister, nor her children and husband. Upon going through Quillian’s belongings in search of some sort of clue, I found those who were closest to her. Those who mattered to her, and now, you matter to me. We have lost a friend, a mother, an aunt, a warrior, a comrade, a rival, a sister, and a protector of the realm. Those who were dearest to Quillian I beg your forgiveness for being the one to deliver this news. It is not a sight I wish to describe, if you wish for such you may seek me out. Whoever did this will find justice, as is my duty as a monster hunter.

Regards,

Derrick Ashton Bell"
