THE FIRST DIET OF HELENA

‘And they say that Harren’s greatest folly was seeking war with his brother when he should have sought love.’

Alexander II, Holy Orenian Emperor

Helena, Roden, Oren | 11th of Harren’s Folly, 1728

The young Emperor held up his hand to the bickering, his visage noticeably deflated from the two men’s tireless arguing. At this signal both proud lords ceased in their squabbling, the echoes of their voices slowly fading from the ornate wooden panelling that lined the room. He exhaled slowly, as he inspected both men. One was young and fierce, a mop of golden curls stood at ends atop his head, as if he was wearing a gilded wreath, he seemed little older to Alex than himself. The other man was older, his skin pale and brittle, wisps of muddy brown hair fell straight across his head, it seemed his face was permanently plastered with stern creases.

“Lord D’Amaury, High Marshal. You both well know how I came to wear this crown, do you not? The lords of men came together and decided that the petty feuds of the few, were not in the interest of the many. That humanity comes first. I think it is of poignant consequence that we meet today within the month of Harren’s Folly, for I am drawn to that parable as I look between you both now. The many great failings of Harren can be named as curses- advice, warnings  to the ears of men willing to heed them. Of hubris. Of pride and of wroth. I have sat and listened to sermons and preachings about all of these things, and in them the truth can be found. However, to my ears the most interesting and truest above them is something I once heard from a simple priest of the Humbertine sect, and they say- that is monks of that order- that Harren’s greatest folly was seeking war with his brother, when he should  have sought love. They also say say something about always wearing clean undergarments… But I digress, here, and now. I bid you place value on my words, for I place value on yours. On this day, this petty rivalry between you both shall cease. We shall draw up terms of friendship and solidarity, or us three men shall never again leave this room.”

For a moment, the two men sat in silence, seemingly contemplating their Emperor’s words. Then, once more their rowing continued. Even in the winter months of Helena, the hall stank with sweat and vicious temperament, though as the hours dragged on, a peace was eventually brockered.

Hours later, as the sun set upon the River Ruber, scribes brought forth great scrolls, illuminated with gold and silver borders, bearing the fresh ink of the imperial mandate, and presented to each individual lord. Both the flaxen-haired youth and the grizzled general, though at first looking pensively at the document, both signed their names with ink and quill. As the black ink dried, the scribes announced the diet throughout the lands, attaching them to the feet of ravens, and sent them to each of the great lords of Oren.

DIET OF HELENA I

AS ISSUED UPON

XVII MENSIS AETERNITIVS MDCCXXVIII

As scribed in the Halls of Helena under the supervision of Emperor Alexander II, the congregated lords of Lorraine and Adria were summoned to make peace following the skirmishes of the border ruffians in the years of 1727 and 1728, and abide to Imperial Law. By God’s Grace, the lords came together and broke bread, and sought compromise in the name of unity and peace.

The Parties of the Duchy of Adria under the bestowment of Duke Adrian I and the Duchy of Lorraine under the bestowment of Duke Leufroy II agree to the following articles, bounded in oath to the Imperial Throne:

  • Lorraine and Adria agree to set aside their differences and forgive past aggressions for the sake of the future of the Empire and the security of the Crownlands.

  • Lorraine and Adria will undertake a joint effort to rid the Crownlands of bandits, marauders, and the like.

  • Lorraine agrees that they will not attack people on sight within their land without the issue of two warnings, and will instead remove undesirable trespassers which cooperate to the warnings without corporal punishment beyond physical removal from the land.

  • Lorraine and Adria will inform their respective leaders of any wrongdoings committed by men of the other side. Such matters will be handled in-house and will only by taken to court if an agreement cannot be reached.

AS IS THE WILL OF THE EMPIRE, SO IS THE WILL OF HUMANITY
