“We only want what’s best for you! What do you mean we don’t know what that is?”

F O R   T H E  C O M M O N   M A N

Oh woe is me! For while it has only been a year, the cooperation and compromise of my beloved Senate is already such a distant thought! The curse of factionalism is already upon us, and thus I weep for every citizen of this Empire, whether they be Josephite or Everardine. Gone are the days where the Everardine Conrad Barclay would cooperate with the Josephite Terrence May to write our Civil Unions Act.

It took only months for cooperation to turn to competition and compromise to domination! I can already predict what the House of Commons will be. One faction in power first, making the reforms that they desire, whilst the other hopes or prays to GOD that they will be the majority next term. Then the other faction comes into power, dedicating themselves almost solely to reversing the reforms made by the other faction, which now hopes or prays to GOD that it will return to being the majority again! Such will be the evil cycle that will perpetually torment the legislative house.

And what does the Common Man reap from this? Nothing but having participated in the system, another cog in the wheel of the political machine. I say this, and I have to express this clearly, to both the Josephites and the Everardines, for neither is at more or less fault for this than the other. But you are not of and for the Common Man. d’Arkent, Pruvia, Stafyr, Ruthern, Napier, d’Aryn. Who are you to say you represent the Common Man of this Empire?

I sincerely hope that both parties will drop the mantle of being of and for the Common Man, because you are not. Whether you are the establishment or you are not, you are both products of the aristocracy, no longer vying for power on the fields, but rather on the ballots. You do no longer fight with sword and shield, but rather with ink and quill. But the Common Man suffers the consequences nonetheless.

To the Common Man, I say, vote for what your conscience desires. But do not be deceived by the empty statement that they are for the Common Man, for they are not. But do remember, even if you do not think it, or it does not seem I believe it, you are the very machine that drives this Empire. The future is yours to decide, whether that is an Everardine future or a Josephite future, the choice is yours. You are the torchbearer, that lifts the torch of Humanity.

Signed,

Lauritz.

“Such is why the Benches in the Royal Duma were dissolved – to avoid the tribalism and partisanship that is inherent in any system with formal ‘sides.’” The Lord Speaker would sigh, “Time will tell if this will be any different. Both sides must remember their true goals of helping the people through all the divisions this may cause.”
