WORM-FISHING

The Sun was gone. A makeshift eclipse gave birth to a concoction of darkness and mystery across the Uzg’s atmosphere. The council of Wargoths was in meeting; as all the great leaders of Uruk kind gathered to discuss matters of state. Just as Targoth Matumakh’Raguk was speaking on his plan to invade the nether with his forces; a mighty tremor shook the very core of San’Azgak and the Uruks within.

Something was coming.

After some heated words, the Uruks all gathered outside now; getting in formation and surveying the mysterious rumble; searching frantically for it’s source. The tremor beneath them seemed not to be one of natural make, and as dead crows unnaturally littered the landscape around the Uruks, the groundshake seemed to change direction frantically, almost as if caused by something alive. Something that was on the hunt.

Those experienced in this, Shanka and Yerug, swiftly informed the Rex that these were in fact earthworms; creatures of great size and prowess, and whom hunted based off of sound. Quickly, Rex Ugrad’Lur ordered the uruks present to gather the elderly and youthful from Krugmar, and lead them to the Lur Huntfort for protection.

Once there; the orcish caravan set up positions. Grishnaakh’Raguk and Kretz’Ox were on the roof; manning the ballista there. Hargrutt and Matuk were on the lower floor; crossbows at hand. Yerug, Murdok and Shanka chose not to enter the fort; as Murdok sat on the outer walls. The Rex and the Targoth sneaked about the fort, quietly giving orders; careful not to make noise as the worms hunted based off sound.

Then, by pure accident, Murdok became bait as he yelled his lungs out to communicate with those above. The rumble beneath the worm trailed towards his direction as the worm followed his sound. It was then when an idea hatched in the Swampgoth’s brain; as he hopped off the wall and started to roar frantically, baiting the worm behind him. “Aim there, aim there!” sounded the Targoth and Rex towards their men as the projectiles were poised towards Murdok.

Then, it began. The ground erupted in a fray of dirt and grass as the gargantuan worm emerged from hell itself; shaking the very core of all around and causing the fort’s very foundations to groan in panic. “Loose! Loose! Fire now!” Barked the Rex eagerly; as projectiles of all sorts of damage sailed through the air with a mighty whiz. The ballista-fire sank deep into the beast’s hide; though the crossbow bolts clanged off helplessly.

This process repeated over and over; Murdok running for his dear life while the worm emerged; got pelted by projectiles, then sank away with a grunt. At some point; the Rex let loose all the horses in the fort to gallop off; emitting a mighty chorus of hoofs trotting against the surface above as bait.

However; the worm was tough. It’s hide like iron and it’s will stronger, and it seemed the uruks would run out of projectiles before the hunt was done. As the worm emerged now, closer to the fort, the Targoth Matumakh’Raguk sensed a golden opportunity. With his two boomsteel swords, he leaped off the side of the fort with a mighty roar; scraping the blades behind him on the castle floor and thus igniting them.

Landing atop the worm, he drove his flaming swords into the beast’s skull; singing praise to Leyd as he did so:

Lok Leyd! Hont lâttuk aldatuk; grish lattuk asgarakh u lât ner!

Lok Leyd! Hont dhurburz lattuk egek taka azugh lât ishûr!

Lok Leyd!

Lok Leyd!

Udirk lâttuk zultûr agh largrûz lattok nik ukh darg!”

The worm wailed in pain and agony as the Uruk drove his boomsteel swords into it’s skull, and even more ballistafire pelted it’s hide. The worm, in a panic, tried to dig itself down into the ground once more, but Matumakh’s weight upon the blades diverted its course; leading instead to it to fall atop the Swampgoth Murdok’Lak, burying him beneath its weight. The momentum of this slam led to fling Matumakh from its back, in turn ripping his forearm from his elbow as the Targoth cascaded on the ground.

The worm was near dead, it’s movements now sluggish and half-hazard as the Rex and his entourage charged forth with their weapons brandished to carve into its hide and free the Swampgoth from beneath.

Soon, the worm breathed it’s final breath. The uruks had been victorious against the demonspawn of which encroached against their land; and their injuries would heal. The end of the day proved as a warning to those of the Eternal Uzg, however:
Hell was coming, but Rex Ugrad’s people were ready for them.
