GoodGuyMatt 7113 Share Posted November 12, 2021 THE COUNTY OF FREIMARK The County of Freimark during its construction phase, with the Castle of Neuberg on sight. "KUSH PUSHON, NDRYSHKET" The Reinmaren proverb, translated in Waldenian as “Wer Rastet, Der Rostet”, and in common, “Who rests, rusts”. By these words have the Reinmaren people prospered, survived and expanded. Through determination and diligence, through hard work and perseverance, the Reinmaren achieved their goals. Through these words, has the former Barony, and now the County of Freimark come to fruition. A vassal to the Principality of Savoy, the County of Freimark lies in the north-eastern territories of Savoyard land, ruled by House Barclay, with the Baronial House of Jazloviecki as their vassal. "KUJTO RRËNJËT E TUA" The words ushered by the founder of House Barclay, Baron Wilheim, “Remember your roots”, for even the ruling Dukes of Reinmar had started from naught but harvesting the fields, they improved, yet they did not change. They raised ranks, yet their soul remained the same. Within the Reinmaren culture, even the value of the humble farmer is recognized, as is that of the smith, the maid, the noble, and the soldier. As a body requires its limbs to function, so do the Reinmaren people require one another to prosper, each of different functions, and each of different specialties. Through these same values, shall the County of Freimark grow. A place for farmers, merchants, horsemasters, warriors, all professions and all peoples of GOTT to come together, to reach their potential through a common cause, to aid their people, just as their people shall aid them. The following document shall establish the building foundations of the County of Freimark, may it inform whomever this concerns, and may GOTT bless our efforts. ZOTI ME NE, DHE ZOTI ME FREIMARKUNGOTT MIT UNS, UND GOTT MIT FREIMARK GOD WITH US, AND GOD WITH FREIMARK HISTORY Portrait of Ernst Barclay, the 1st Count of Freimark First founded as a Barony on the 9th of the First Seed, 1838 by Prince Olivier Renault de Savoie, Freimark was bestowed upon Ernst Barclay and his descendants to uphold the regions of the island north-west of San Luciano, in the warm southern lands of Savoy Ever since the founding of Freimark, the Baron, as well as the Baronial court, most notably including the two brothers of the Baron, Jurgen and Volmar Barclay, and members of House Jazloviecki, led by Borys Jazloviecki, began works to increase the importance of the Barony. The construction of the Baronial castle finished in 1841, after three years of hard work from the Constructors of Freimark, with architect Ellisar Aevaris leading the construction, and help received from the members of House Barclay of Reinmar, such as Klaus and Margot Barclay. The castle was dubbed Neuberg, coming from Waldenian to mean “New Mountain'', for it was to be the base of a new beginning, strong and durable as the landscape’s mountains. During the construction, it is said that even the Prince of Savoy himself, His Highness Olivier Renault offered a helping hand in the construction of Neuberg. Nevertheless, the Freimarkish settled in these lands, and soon after a levy of Freimark was founded later during the same year. The Sons of Saint Tylos, the First Bannermen of Freimark. Since its founding, House Barclay has had deep connections with the church, and has raised pious men and women, even producing a Saint, that being Saint Tylos of Kalden. The same practice and ferverous devotion to faith continued in Freimark, and its levy was dubbed after the Saint, also coincidentally the great-grandfather of the Baron. After much hard work by the leaders of Freimark, the levy grew into formidable numbers, as it still does, eradicating threats and protecting both Freimark, Savoy, and faith. During this era, farming, and the practice of other humble, yet important work, such as raising cattle, and mining, became prominent in the newly inhabited Barony. Soldiers and residents would farm the land, raise its cattle, and mine for resources, contributing them to the community for its betterment. The methods proved efficient, and soon, the people had labored enough to be able to provide the soldiers of Freimark with proper militaristic equipment and formidable amounts of food to survive. Communal identity and collectivism had begun striving in Freimark, as it had in the Reinmaren tribes of old. Depiction of the County of Freimark Thus, the same practices continue up until this day, having formed the basis for the Freimarkish identity and its flourishment, turning into the Reinmaren traditions of old in the modern day. As the Barony grew, so did its need for expansion, for a militaristic fort was unable to hold all the residents, and, after much contribution to Savoy, the Baron and his subjects were rewarded with a County, which took the same name as its predecessor. At the same time were the House of Jazloviecki, great allies of House Barclay and hard working men of Freimark rewarded for their loyalty, and after Ernst’s recommendation, elevated to nobility, now Barons of Lvinsk. So began the construction of a town to accompany Neuberg and its residence, and, after many years of tireless work, was the town of Erwinsburg founded, named after the second Patriarch of House Barclay, the great Marshal Erwin Barclay. CULTURE Depiction of Freimarkish children welcoming a traveling guest. With Reinmaren being the main culture adapted within the County of Freimark, most of its populace are adapted to this Waldenian subculture, either through direct recognition of the culture, or through the practice of the Reinmaren values taught to all. Most prominently so is the art of horse riding, the communal ideas of collectivism, respect for all work and the holding of the Reinmaren Shwur, especially held to one of the highest esteems. All in all, the Reinmaren have been able to adapt some of their important tribal traditions and ideals through the modern age, rather than erasing them entirely. Thus, a culture which values essential, yet forgotten ideals and traditions in the modern age. They are men and women of humility, hospitality, and hard work, GOTT fearing individuals who come together as a whole, united by their identity. Lechitian takes place as the second most practiced and important culture within the County, with its origins and spreading coming from the Baronial House of Jazloviecki. Similarly, so is the Savoyard culture spread through the lands from the populace coming from San Luciano or other Savoyard lands. THE FIVE PILLARS OF THE FREIMARKISH IDEALS Artists depiction of a Freimarkish revelrous gathering COLLECTIVISM Inherited from one of the most valued and significant practices of the ancient Reinmaren culture, the Freimarkish peoples do also function as a whole through the ideal of communal collectivism. They believe that their realm as a whole functions much like a body, where each limb must do its work in order for the body to survive. The Freimarkish individual puts the benefit of the realm before that of their own, they are selfless, as every good Canonist must also be. This leads to the people of Freimark being able to depend more upon one another, as their shared goals and ideals bind them together. COMMUNAL IDENTITY Derived from the collectivist nature of the realm, the Freimarkish are men and women proud to be so. They identify as Freimarkish, and hold that feature dear, as do all their fellow peers. Because of this, the interpersonal relations between the Freimarkish collective is strong, the bonds are closely knitted. This, however, does not make the populace exclusive and shunning of outsiders, for hospitality and the welcoming of guests is an equally important tradition of the Freimarkish. DILIGENCE If the Freimarkish realm is all one body, as its populace perceives it, so too does every limb have its own function to carry. Diligence, competence, and hard work is one of the most prominent ideals of both the Reinmaren culture and the Freimarkish realm. It is a virtue endorsed by every good Canonist, for the competent, yet honorable man is one that is fair in the eyes of GOTT, one that contributes to his community. As such, all work is held to similarly-leveled prestige and esteem within the realm, and even the humble farmer’s work is appreciated and valued. SCHWUR An important part of the Reinmaren culture, surviving to the modern day, the Shwur, translated from Waldenian, closely translates to the word of honour, or as it was used in a better context in Old Reinmaren, Besa. The Schwur could be found in most of the life of the tribal Reinmaren, it was the word that binded him to his honor, to his very own being. A similar concept finds its way utilized and practiced within the Freimarkish realm, for every resident within the realm is held accountable based on his word of oath, and breaking it is not only frowned upon, but may even lead to further consequences by the individual’s fellow peers. MILITARISM Without struggle, there is no ease; without hardships, no peace. Every Reinmaren and Freimarkish individual understands these words, as they understand that fighting for a country in times of crisis and danger is paramount to the survival of the realm. Most Freimarkish men and women are taught warfare and the importance of fighting from a young age. For this reason, it is not uncommon for the average Freimarkish to join the Sons of Saint Tylos, the military force of the realm, so that they may fight for GOTT and country. Similarly, the Reinmaren and the Freimarkish find great importance in the equestrian art, be it for militaristic or convenience purposes. The stallion is a beast that is held to high esteem within the realm, for it is noble and strong, an embodiment of the Reinmaren values. TRADITIONS Artist’s depiction of a Freimarkish horseman EQUESTRIAN TRADITION - With a majority Reinmaren population, the art of horse riding is held of high esteem within Freimark. It is a skill that, similarly to their militaristic tradition, is embedded in the Freimarkish individual since youth. THE BURRNESHAS, REINMAREN MANESSES - An old tradition of tribal Reinmaren origins, the Burrneshas, translating to common as “Manesses”, are women who lead a life similar to men. They dress like men, act as such, and usually tend to show militaristic ambition. However, due to their lifestyle, the Burrneshas, to become such, swear oaths before their tribe to hold their celibacy for the reminder of their life, living like men, and being treated as such. Many reasons would lead a woman to become a Burrnesha, some would become so because they did not wish to marry, some to stand close to their family and fathers, or some so to be treated like men, showing courage and fighting like men. THE ELDERS OF FREIMARK - Within the Freimarkish community, its elders are held with some of the highest esteem, especially those who have led a fruitful, hard-working life as per the Reinmaren tradition. The elders of Freimark, be they men or women, are thus looked up to by the younger generations, they are counseled with, and taken care of by the new generation they helped raise, be they their relatives or not. Consequently, the word of the Freimarkish elders is also held to be of high importance, and considered greatly in times of debate or conversations. They usually wear vests and other traditional Reinmaren clothing, making them easy to distinguish. Disrespecting these old members of the realm is thus not only frowned upon, but even considered a punishable offence, and festivals are held every now and then to celebrate the Freimarkish Elders, to discuss and hear their wisdom. Artist’s Depiction of a Freimarkish Elder tending to his poultry. THE FEAST OF THE TRIBE - Derived from the old Reinmaren Festa e Fisit, the Feast of the Tribe is a rekindled tradition in which the soldiers, together with other residents of the realm, are gathered by their liege every few years in order to have a collective feast of revelry. The men feast on goats bred in their own land, as was the tradition derived from the chieftain Galim, descendant of the great Chief Hosha. The goat was used as the chieftains own signifying animal, where he wore a helmet adorning the imagery of a goat. As per the tradition, the goats on which the Sons of Saint Tylos and the Freimarkish shall feast will be slaughtered by them, for he who wishes to feast must first work their share. THE LEGEND OF THE BARFISH - The Barfish is a fish-like, anthropomorphic figure in Reinmaren folklore. Said to roam the waters around Freimark in service to the Freimarkish people and their guests, retrieving that which has been lost at sea. Whilst of uncertain origin, it is widely believed the Barfish was once himself a holy man who was lost and drowned at sea, but was thereafter brought back to life by means of divine intervention and given guardianship over the waters. The legend of the creature emerged after an encounter between a Reinmaren man and a creature of the seas, which brought to him a valuable item of high significance, an item which was lost for decades, that being the flag of Aeldenic Banard, which the Reinmaren man was said to have worn during his time serving in Banard. Depiction of the legend of the Barfish as found in Old Reinmaren writings, together with a map of the Kingdom of Banard and its Coat of Arms BREAD, BEER AND HEART - The Reinmaren put great value in honoring and showing hospitality to guests, a tradition closely related to the upholding of the Shwur. Upon visitation to a Reinmaren household, a guest can expect to be treated similarly to how royalty is treated. They are cared for at all times, good food is cooked and brought onto the table upon the arrival of guests, be they announced or unannounced, and any accommodation is offered with a loving, welcoming heart from the members of the household. Usually, this is presented in the form of Bear, Beer and Heart, heart in this context referring to the heart-to-heart hospitality found by the visiting guests. In old Reinmaren folklore, it was even said that the patriarch of a house would remain loyal to and protect their guests, even if it meant putting their own family in danger. THE HEART’S DUEL - Coming from militaristic and tribal origins, the Reinmaren are men and women of action and at times even violence. Through the recent days, however, the barbaric nature of these peoples have been tamed and repurposed so as to fit in the modern context and practicality. Most notably so coming in the form of militaristic tradition, the Heart’s Duels are a prime example of this. Differently from the common Duels, the Heart’s Duel is one between two parties, conducted in good faith and common understanding. Even two good friends or close brothers can participate in the Heart’s Duel, depending on the minor dispute they have, be it in order to prove a point through duel, or at times show their dedication to their patron Saint through dueling. The Freimarkish populace sees this practice as good activities to improve their combat skills, and even improve their relations with one another, hence it is called the Heart’s Duel, for it requires two men of pure hearts. SOCIAL RANKS A Serf walking his mule towards the castle of Neuberg, an a Artisan Freeman practicing his craft, and an armed Burgher of Freimark. Although social classes exist in Freimark to distinguish between those of higher social ranking from the hard working Shqiptar Serfs, the Freimarkish only hold these distinctions in a practical manner. It is not unusual for Burghers of Freimark to spend time with serfs of the realm as if they were of the same class. This stems from the importance that the Reinmaren give to personal competency, as well as their love for work, no matter its status. Thus, the interpersonal relations between the populace of Freimark remain dynamic and blended between the different classes of the society. NOBILITYHeld by the dynasties of Barclay as Lords of Freimark, and the Jazlovieckis as those of Lvinsk, the Nobility of Freimark is held to the highest esteem amongst its populace. They are the Lords of the land, and the leaders of the County, thus enjoying most privileges that come with their titles.Only the Lords of Freimark and Lvinsk, as well as their children and grandchildren are considered as nobles. CLERGYAs dedicated and pious folk, Freimarkish hold their clerics to a higher position, even than those of the Burghers. For these are the priests, chaplains and other ordained officials of the Mother Church, those who lead their Freimarkish flock closer to GOTT. BURGHERS Usually held by Knights and individuals who have contributed much to Freimark through service in higher offices, the Burghers of the realm are made out of those men and women who have shown great dedication to the betterment of Freimark. They have worked hard and they have provided. Thus, they enjoy a higher social ranking, and all that comes with it. FREEMENThe commoner of Freimark, the artisan, the trader, the homeowner. The Freemen of Freimark, as their name suggests, are those who enjoy a life of freedom and common social importance. They have paid for their property within Erwinsburg, and pay it in coins. As such, they are allowed to conduct business, elect the Lawspeaker, and enjoy many other privileges and responsibilities. The common Burgher usually reflects their status through their occupation, for most are artisans and craftsmen, utilizing what the Serfs harvest and gather to create new produce. SERFSThe backbone of the realm, the Serf, despite being the lowest of the social ranks in Freimark, still enjoy their own reputation and are offered their own value. These are the hard workers, the Shqiptars of the Land. They are the farmers, miners, woodcutters and the servants. Leading a much simpler lifestyle in their own right, the Serfs do not own the properties or land they live in, instead, they are given the land by the Count, and pay him through offering a portion of their harvests and produce. Usually living in the outskirts of Erwinsburg, the Serf is usually tied to the land, and although they may travel as they please most of the time, in times of emergency and turmoil, they might be told by their leige to not leave the County. THE FREIMARKISH MOOT Depiction of the Old Reinmaren Moots. Aspired and derived from the ancient Reinmaren Moots held throughout the tribes of old, the Freimarkish Moot shall take after its predecessor. The Moot is only summoned at the account of the Count of Freimark, usually held once every two or three years. Whilst the aims and reasons of each Moot vary on the occasions and circumstances upon which they are summoned, these gatherings serve for the Freimarkish to come together and discuss amongst themselves the affairs of the community. Additionally, here is where the act of lawmaking is usually conducted and proposed, whilst the populace may also bring in their petitions and voice their minds to the Leaders. The Freimarkish Moot features two processions, THE HIGH MOOT, and THE HEARING. The first of the two, the High Moot, is the gathering of the higher-ranking individuals and leaders of Freimark, during which laws are made or proposed, important concerns are brought up, and work is delegated directly from the Count onto those in charge. The following enjoy seats in the High Moot: All Nobles of Freimark The Church Official of Freimark The Patriarchs of the Burgher Houses The Bailiff of Erwinsburg The Lawspeaker The Masters of the Freimarkish Guilds Taking place after the High Moot, the procession of the Hearing is one participated by the entire populace of Freimark. During this period, those who couldn’t attend the High Moot, mostly the Serfs and Freemen, may bring their petitions for the Count to hear. Occasionally, during the Hearing, open discussions may also be held at the behest of the Count, upon which the populace may communicate directly with their liege. THE LAWSPEAKER Serving as the representative of the Freemen within the High Moot, the Lawspeaker is a man or woman elected by the Members of the Freemen class. Whilst their main duty is to act as the representative of the Freimarkish populace before the Moot and the Count, they are also tasked with the writing and reciting of law within the realm. Not only does the Lawspeaker bring forth propositions of law within the High Moot, but they are at times asked to recite it and remind the populace of the law on some occasions. Consequently, the Lawspeaker enjoys the right to execute law as a judge upon the absence or consent of the Count amongst the Serfs and Freemen of Freimark. THE BAILIFF OF ERWINSBURG Depiction of the Bailiff of Freimark visiting the hard working Serfs and Freemen of the realm at the outskirts of Erwinsburg Appointed by the Count of Freimark, the Bailiff serves as the Count’s representative within the town of Erwinsburg. Whilst their duties may span through a wide range of responsibilities depending on the current ongoings of the town, the Bailiff usually serves four purposes. Firstly, they serve as the Leviers of Freimark, collecting the due taxes from the Count’s subject, be it the due products of the Serfs, or the coins owed by the Freemen. Secondly, the Bailiff enjoys executive authority amongst the guards of the town, who usually are made of the present Sons of St. Tylos. Thirdly, the Bailiff of Erwinsburg also assists the Count in overseeing the Guilds of Freimark, as well as the rest of Erwinsburg, bringing council and working as a representative of the Count whenever delegated. Lastly, they are tasked with overseeing the organization of events and festivals around the town, thus working closely with the Revelers Guild to make sure that the populace of Freimark has much to enjoy. With as many duties as they hold, the Bailiff of Erwinsburg also enjoys extended privileges and authority within the town. Not only are they held to high esteem and at times allowed to speak in the Count’s absence, but they are also able to hire and recruit workers under their office. Thus, the Bailiff may be in charge of the Leviers of the County, and delegate hard working men and women to collect taxes, whilst also having authority over the Count’s levies in matters of the upholding of law and order within Erwinsburg. THE SONS OF SAINT TYLOS Founded when the realm was naught but a Barony, the Sons of Saint Tylos serve as both the militaristic force of the County in times of war and turmoil, as well as the law-keeping guardforce of Erwinsburg. All Sons of St. Tylos swear fealty only to their liege, the Count of Freimark; they are strong men and women of able body and mind. Due to the Freimarkish militaristic ideals and tradition, most of its residents, especially the men and the Burrneshas of the realm tend to have served as Sons of Saint Tylos for a good portion of their life. The troops are maintained and upheld directly by the Count and his officers, a leadership also assisted by the Bailiff’s administration within Erwinsburg. Amongst most ideals, the Sons of St. Tylos differentiate themselves from most levies due to the close bonds created within the ranks. Truly living up to their name, these soldiers are siblings-in-arms, all gathered under the Green and Blue banner and the presence of Saint Tylos. Any may request to enlist amongst these ranks, be they Serf or Noble, for within the Reinmaren militaristic tradition, all soldiers are brothers and sisters, and thus within the army all are treated equal. Those who wish to prove themselves and join the higher cause, may do so through the following document, where they may also find more information on the Bannermen of Freimark: THE FREIMARKISH GUILDS Depiction of the hunters of the Shqiptars Guild catching a wild boar. It requires builders to raise a keep, it requires smiths to forge arms, it requires farmers to harvest the fields, and it requires hard working men to raise a realm. Through the Reinmaren tradition of both collective and hard work shall the Guilds of Freimark emerge, so that the men and women of the realm may join one another in their respective trades, to provide for the County and themselves alike, through communal union and hard work. Four Guilds shall be established, each serving its own purpose, the Shqiptar Guild, the Artisans Guild, the Revelers Guild, and the Horsemasters Guild. Each of these unions shall be made out of people of multiple professions serving similar purposes, all ultimately overseen by the liege lord of Freimark. The Count, together with the advice of the guildsmen, shall appoint Masters of each guild to help with the administration of Freimark’s working force, offering opportunities for all to shine and move up in the world. SHQIPTARS GUILD The Shqiptars of Freimark going about their daily work Shqiptar, derived from Old Reinmaren which roughly translates to hard worker, or simply worker in the Reinmaren context. The word has its origins from the Reinmaren Chieftain Enver Hosha, who would call his men who worked the fields, raised the cattle, mined, and carried other such works Shqiptars. Thus, again, shall the Reinmaren Shqiptars re-emerge within the Freimarkish realm, united as one under the Shqiptar Guild, to work hard and provide for their community. The common member of the Shqiptar guild usually tends to be a serf, bound to both his production and his liege lord, these hard working men are the backbone of the Freimarkish community. These are the men and women who bring in or harvest resources, a good portion of which are then used by the Artisan’s guild for production. Members of the Shqiptar Guild are individuals specializing in the following professions: Farmers, Cattle Workers, Miners, Herbalists, Hunters, and Fishers ARTISANS GUILD An Artisan Blacksmith forging the weapons of Freimark Utilizing the resources harvested and gathered by the Shqiptars of Freimark, the artisans are those who turn iron into swords, planks into furniture, wheat into bread, and herbs into potions. These are the producers of the realm, men and women of skill and talent who either craft goods, trade them, or both. Because of their workload’s complexity and and higher importance in making Freimark a land of producers, those members of the Artisan’s guild are usually the Freemen of the realm, free to practice their crafts, and paying their liege through the income from their production. It is possible, however, to find a Serf working with the artisans, though this usually occurs when said Serf serves under the tutelage of an artisan, trying to learn their craft. In order to provide more opportunity to residents of Freimark, the Artisans of the realm are encouraged and asked to accept novices, passing down their trade for yet another generation, and aiding the Freimarkish collective. Members of the Artisans Guild are individuals specializing in the following professions: Smiths, Woodworkers, Bakers, Cooks, Tailors, Alchemists, Tanners, Merchants, and any other Artisans. REVELERS GUILD Depiction of a tavern night hosted between the Reveler Guildsmen Working to bring entertainment, activities, and life to Freimark, the Revelers Guild is the backbone of the Freimarkish nature of festivities. These are the individuals who bring joy to the residents of Freimark, either through organizing events, or through the practices of their arts. The Reveler’s Guild is overseen by the Count of Freimark and whoever is put in charge to oversee that the festivities and revelry of Freimark persists, and the Comital Courtiers in charge of events and such are part of it. Thus, the guild is a place of great opportunity for those wishing to pursue the arts, and bring entertainment to the residents of Freimark. Any member of Freimark can join the Guild, be they Serf or Noble, although the individuals of higher rank tend to join it as patrons of the arts. Thus, the members of the Revelers Guild are individuals specializing in the following professions: Tavern Keepers, Event Organizers, Brewers, Bards, Jesters, Painters, Writers, Playwrights, and Actors. HORSEMASTERS GUILD A Freimarkish Horsemaster riding their stallion around the County, just behind the castle of Neuberg Holding its own place as a separate Guild within Freimark, the existence of the Horsemasters Guild stems from the great importance of the Reinmaren Equestrian tradition. Thus, those specializing with any profession which concerns the raising, riding, or any use of stallions and mares can be a part of this guild. The Horsemasters Guild is even more closely related to Comital affairs, and enjoys a more direct overseeing from the Count, as not only are the raises stallions directly used by the higher ranking individuals of the Freimarkish society, but a good portion of the guild is also made out of the Cavaliers of the Sons of St. Tylos. The members of the Revelers Guild are individuals specializing in the following professions: Stablemasters, Cavaliers, Messengers, and Scouts.
