Gentle steps, forward once, then twice back. In rhythm they glide upon the dancefloor, parading in front for all to see.

Two bodies intertwined as one, bound not by chains but by promises.

Her dress white, bright as the day that greets us after each night. With somber steps she graces the room with intrinsic beauty. See her now for she is the Lady of Life.

His suit black, dark as the night that meets us after each day. With an austere poise he guides his partner throughout the room, yet - he does not take the lead as one would think, never a thought to step upon her toes. See him now for he is the Lord of Death.

Their waltz is a cycle and one that depicts a story, a tale spoken of by many for it is as old as the creation of time itself:
‘The Lady of Life is bound to dance with the Lord of Death forever.’

For long ago the two made a promise to each other and one that stated: With every being Life creates, there has to exist a being that Death must return into the ground.

In Danse Macabre there must exist two lovers, two performers, two bodies, two souls.. But they may only act as one mind.

As the land continues to move, and those long dead have since been forgotten and replaced by new life in the form of a child. They know not that Life and Death continue to fight their eternal struggle, for there can not exist one without the other.

Never one without the other.

Hannes de Vilain became satisfied with the schooling he put the young Heidi through, after reading the lovely poem.
