DEDICATED TO Mother Lorina, my sister, Mother Anna, my step-mother, Henri Leufroy, my son, Bertie, my daughter, Charles, my late brother, and Sigismond, my late father.

haiku i: for mother anna
this weekend morning
planting flowers for anna
i sweat in the sun

haiku ii: for henri
the moon glimmers and
my son conducts a concert
of hungry young cries

haiku iii
we dance late at night
a sleeping cricket chirps
before the idle war

haiku iv: for bertie
a kick! a push! a
rose-skinned daughter wails. tonight
heaven in her eyes

haiku v
midsummer rain falls
pittering on weary roof
tiles. i count the rain

haiku vi
the sun wakes us, birds
singing in an opera:
i’ll remember this

haiku vii
autumn leaves for win-
ter. leaves turn orange, pirou-
etting in the gray sky.

haiku viii: for charles & father
life taken from you
like candy from a child
i’ll remember you

haiku ix: for mother lorina
angel-white hair, wide
red eyes. proud priestess, younger
sister, full of life

haiku x
mothers bestow love
unto their sons & daughters;
and a dream, or two!
